A very important verb
We're sort of in a rut here, huh? We only know how to kill (Necare) and love (Amare)!
There's one very very important family we need to learn though. One I probably should have introduced right away, early on!
ESSE= To be
singular plural
1st Sum Sumus
2nd Es Estis
3rd Est Sunt
You'll notice this family doesn't obey the rules we've learned about verb endings. This is because this family is just too important for that.
What do they mean? Well....
singular plural
1st I am We are
2nd You You (all)
3rd He/she/it is They are
Est in particular is perhaps the most important word to know, besides ET, which is 'and'.
To help reinforce what we know, let's just try and mull over a few sentences...
"I am a girl"
"They are wolves"
"We are not boys"
"You are a slave"
"They are girls"
"Aren't you a boy?"
This family, the ESSE family, is of course a verb involving identity, and being. A funny word which WE WILL NOT BE USING at this point is "Futurus", which is part of this family and means "Being about to be"
-
"Puella sum"
"Lupi sunt"
"Non puer sumus"
"Servus es"
"Puellae sunt"
"Puer non esne?" (Puer esne would be 'are you a boy?', we want 'are you not a boy?')
