Trivia #7 : Bad Luck
BAD LUCK
──────⊱ ✿ ⊰──────
● The number four (4) is considered unlucky. It is treated the same way as the number 13 in western countries -- no 13th floor, etc. The pronunciation of the number four in Korean (sah) is the same as the word for 'death'. Although these come from different Chinese characters, they're spelled the same in Korean. Older buildings even skip over the 4th floor.
● Writing a person's name in red ink is tantamount to saying they are dead or will die soon. Red ink can be used to write anything but not to write a living person's name. Doing so is viewed as a curse or a threat. Traditionally, red ink was used to write the name of deceased in family document.
● Shaking your leg(s) ia s bad habit and one that is believed to shake away good luck. Parents don't like their children to develop this bad habit and that's probably how this superstition developed.
● Sleeping in a closed room, with an electric fan turned on, can kill you. If the doors and windows are closed, and a fan is left running, the belief is that you could die from hypothermia or suffocate from a lack of oxygen.
