Tips in Meeting Korean Parents for the First Time
1. Bring gifts like a whisky, health products and a flowers would often suffice.
2. Wear something clean, conservative and semi-casual. Avoid short skirts, baggy pants, crop shirts and anything that makes you appear sloppy and/or seductive.
3. Impress the parents about the knowledge of Korean etiquette. Do a deep bow (jeol) for them when you meet.
4. Call them eomeonim (mother) and abeonim (father). Do not call them by their names
5. If you happen to sit on the floor instead on a chair, kneel until you are told otherwise.
6. Help out in the kitchen. Help setting up and cleaning. Knowing how to cook Korean food is a plus.
7. Learn to use chopsticks gracefully and eat enthusiastically.
8. Do not ask them to reach or pass the food.
9. Never say no if they offer a glass of soju, or any drink. Receive drinks with two hands. For your first sip, turn your head away as you drink.
10. Be the best of yourself and hope for the best. You can't force people to like you, but a genuine smile and right attitude will earn you extra points.
