Omniscient POV
The gunshot spilt the air, shattering the deadly silence.
A single, horrendous thought coursed through everyone's mind: They did it. They did it.
The shot rang through the air, reverberating, bouncing of the icy stone walls, echoing emptily. Everyone was frozen, as if time had stopped.
Hanji walked over the curtains, which were still pulled closed. She moved sluggishly, as if slogging through thick mud. She reached forward, fingers barely brushing the cloth, then Hanji tore them back, leaning out the window. She recoiled, jerking back from the window.
"Well?" Levi questioned.
"They've already removed the body... but someone's going to wash the wall clean."
A muscle twitched in Erwin's cheek. "That's the first time, right?"
"What'd you mean?" Hanji blinked, confused.
"The first time they've flat out executed someone." Levi answered, cutting Erwin off before he could even open his mouth. "And the answer is no."
"Really?" Erwin seemed surprised.
"Yeah." Levi looked away. "It was open and close, a double homicide. It wasn't the first offense from the criminal; the Inner City had just ignored the previous reports."
"Why, then?" Hanji furrowed her brow.
"It was after the fall of Wall Rose, and the people coming over from Shiganshina brought their criminals with them."
"Who-?"
"You're awfully interested in this, Hanji." Erwin raised an eyebrow.
"I'd just never heard about it."
"A girl. Couldn't have been more than twenty. Arlet, her name was."
Hanji shrugged. "Ok. Thanks."
"Why'd you want to know?"
She shrugged once more. "Nothing in particular."
Levi stared at her for a moment longer, unsure of how truthful she was being. "Alright then..."
"On murder, did they ever catch the Three?" Hanji's eyes shone, but Erwin looked rather sick at the mention of the Three.
"The Three?" Levi was more than a little confused.
Hanji leaned in, as if sharing a secret. "The Three are the assassins that the MP had to try hardest to cover up. They never caught them, or even learned their gender, though. The Three just disappeared about two years ago. But... I've never understood... Why were they so feared?" Hanji titled her head.
"They left everything from the shoulders down completely normal." Erwin's face was paler than usual.
"What? Please, just give me a straight explanation." Hanji was growing rather frustrated, and Levi nodded too. Secrets such as these should not have to be carried by one person alone.
"Each one had something to do with faces. The first of the Three, Smile, killed his victims-"
"His?"
"We assume so. The few looks we got at him it was definitely male."
"Well, continue." Levi said impatiently.
"Smile... slit his throats, in such a way that it appeared as if the victim's throat was smiling."
"That's why he was called Smile." To her credit, Hanji only seemed mildly disturbed. "And the other two of the Three?"
"Silencer and the Weeper. The Silencer cut off her victim's tongues and let them choke to death on their own blood. The Weeper scooped out his victims eyes. His victims cried tears of blood, and what's worse is that no one but Smile killed their victims straight off. With a few, the victim was still alive when the MP arrived."
Erwin had paled by another shade, and even Levi felt more than a little ill at the thought of choking on your own blood and bleeding out of your eyes until death.
"They all used poison to paralyze their victims first. That's all we really know."
"Genders are an assumption?"
"Not on the Weeper or Silencer."
"So we might've just killed Smile or the Silencer?"
Erwin blinked. "I... probably not. Her victims were hacked to pieces. Not a pretty sight, so she couldn't be one of the Three. Pretty and Perfect were their motto, I guess. Leave everything intact so that the wrong stands out even more."
"Still. What if she is Smile or-"
"I'm flattered. Me, Smile? I wish I was half as skilled as the Three."
A shadowed figure leaned on the door frame, clearly smiling.
"Who-"
"Honestly." The person pulled away from the wall, grinning. "I'm surprised you don't recognize me."
It hit them at the same time. Hanji stumbled back, Levi stepped forward, and Erwin dropped into a fighting stance.
"Now, now. I'm not a ghost, there's no need to be scared."
"But you died..."
"Ah. About that. I couldn't steal you moment of triumph, could I?" Y/N winked. "But, alas, a moment was all I could spare."
With that, she ran straight towards them, a set of 3DMG already hooked on. Y/N shot through the window, but not before they heard her parting remark, spoken quietly, as if to herself: "Really, me? As brutal as Smile? Please."
