It is time to have power
And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. - Mathew 10:1 (NKJV)
Jesus called out twelve that would disseminate the word of God to different parts of the world. The thing that Jesus gave the disciples was power. What is power? Do we need power? I believe we need power. I want us to see that power comes from God. The more I seek God, the more I realize how powerless and how small I am before Him. David saw this and that's why He had a deep relationship with God. One that most never had. He was called a man after God's own heart. (Acts 13:22)
I have little understanding on how God could have chosen David and to give him such a title. It is a good title, isn't it? 'A man after God's own heart.' If I were God, I would have chosen Joseph. I have my reasons. God has His too. I want us to study what David said about man.
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
4 What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit[] him? - Psalm 8:3-4 (NKJV)
This is how small David felt before God. He felt so small. What can small people like us do for a God who created the heavens at His word? What could we do for a God that fashioned the moon and stars with His fingers? Salvation is the most mysterious thing to me. I will never understand the manner of love the Father has for us that He should send His only begotten son to die for us. I cant seem to catch the revelation that lies in the simplicity of the gospel.
Why do we need power? Power for what exactly? Are we under attack? Is something against us? Yes. There is something against us. Powers. Principalities and wickedness in the high places. There are things we cannot deal with in our most humanely ways. So yes. We do need power.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. - Ephesians 6:13 (NKJV)
Why do we need power again? To be able to stand in the evil day. What is an evil day? Anything that is unusual. Sickness. Divorce. Separation from an important relationship. That's an evil day. We need power from God to be able to stand.
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you []will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." - John 16:33 (NKJV)
Tribulations always come. There's been times when I wanted to give up. And the only thing I clung on to was the power that Jesus bestowed on us. Jesus finished His work. We haven't. We can learn to walk in the finished works of Christ Jesus and overcome all that troubles us.
Power is authority. When you have authority, you have the power to do anything. I mean anything you could think of. That power lies in God. We do not have power. Forgive me, if you think I have any power. I am one of the simplest people you will ever meet. I was born in an African country, and raised in another. My life involved commuting between two countries and having to share residence in nations so different and yet apart of a whole: Africa. Perhaps, that might be the only complicated thing about me.
When I started to grow a little in God, I realized just how small and powerless I was. Without God I cannot do anything. It takes power from God to avoid succumbing to worldly temptation. I have never seen my self to be more special than anyone else, but I rely on God. It takes power to live a holy life. It takes power to have authority over the evil that the enemy sets before us.
We know that we live in God and he lives in us, because he gave us his Spirit. - 1 John 4:13 (NCV)
We know we live in God. It's not a feeling. It's a knowing. A knowing that God lives in us. God gave us His Spirit. Why? To live in the right terms with God, we need His spirit. God's spirit knows God better than we do. The secret power that makes us into beautiful sons and daughters of God is the power that the Holy Spirit provides. The power to stay in the presence of God.
Father, power belongs to you. May you help us to have more authority over sins we commit unconsciously. Thank you for entrusting us with your precious Holy Spirit. In Jesus' mighty name we pray. Amen.
