Codenames

The person on screen was extremely still, except for playing with the bear where it was turned around eying all of them in one sweeping motion as if to indicate that they too were doing the same thing since the mask covering their whole face bars anyone from looking at the windows of the soul and especially small cues such as the sweeping eye motion.

The survivors could only tense at what was to come but they didn't even know the situation they were in nor what to do. Everyone else tried to bring them up to speed but there wasn't enough time, and this development was enough to make them question everything. What to believe and what not to.

No one could catch a break here.

The silence continued for a while except for the survivors' struggling who could look between the Monokuma masked girl on the screen and the rest of their friends, who chose to wear the same Monokuma masks... and keep them restrained.

Sometimes they couldn't help think in this situation whether they truly are friends or not. The trio caught each other's eyes but were at a loss on what to do. Their friends had remained still, not even uttering a word as the masks simply directed themselves to the screen, as if awaiting... something. Before the silence felt completely unbearable for everyone, the girl on the screen sighed.

"You recruits are as boring as usual," she sighed, her eerie Monokuma mask eyes once again sweeping through all of them before lingering longer on the survivors and continued speaking, "You are always just in your own little world until instructions are given. How despairful, to be so same old, same old. Fine... your instructions are to hold down the-"

"What the fuck is going on?" Maki growled, looking up defiantly at the girl, deciding she would be silent no more and get to the bottom of the situation when she had no idea what was going to happen next.

"Ah, and the survivors put up a fuss as usual," the girl sighed, "Its so predictable that I can't even despair from the boredom of this predictability. I'm sure by now we implanted the policy to gag the survivors so they won't put up a fuss like this. Don't waste my time."

Almost robotically, Kirumi, because even when they wear the same mask, their outfits were more than enough to differentiate everyone, went up with a roll of bandage that would gag them.

The survivors struggled but then Kirumi was the one to whisper as she was about to rob them temporarily of their voices:

"I won't make this uncomfortable. Please hold on a little longer."

Hold on a little longer for what?

And do they even dare to stay still in these circumstances? Do nothing? The survivors wanted to trust the others, but... at least for Shuichi and Maki, it almost felt like a mockery. What use was the pain that they went through with everyone else's deaths when it turned out to such a joke? What was the meaning of final farewells? Could they even trust what they had seen before their eyes?

It was skeptical, bitter and cynical for both of them, while Himiko chose to turn a blind eye, an ever useful coping mechanism that originated from the killing game and came full force despite the growth that she had gained from Angie and Tenko's deaths, although they didn't really die and were here now.

Like it negated everything.

And wasn't that something, when it should be rejoicing that everyone was alive (maybe, or maybe not because can they really believe this? So on the fence that it was)? After all, wasn't this something that they have all wanted at the very beginning, even before Monokuma announced that accursed killing game? A long time ago, the answer would be yes.

Now, it was just painful, and when Maki and Shuichi looked at each other, they wanted no part of it (or else they go insane, or else they succumb and believe and it gets crushed, or else), eyes flicking throughout the place despite being held by the others, and now gagged of their voices. They wanted to escape, they wanted somewhere to think better of it, they wanted... respite, away from something as confusing and outraging as this.

And yet, there was a part of them that wanted to stay, to trust, to believe in such a fabled too good to be true redo. However, that was the crux and irony of pain, to simultaneously hope and despair with belief and doubt over this unfathomable situation over them, all ruled by choice. To trust, hope and believe. To distrust, despair and doubt. None seemed right and none seemed wrong, so the dilemma kept going, for them to find a way or to stay put.

The girl on screen was neither bothered by Maki and Shuichi's frantic display nor Himiko's lackluster one, as if she had seen all types of reactions from survivors like them and they met her expectations. Looking bored, she had continued her directive:

"Sigh... did nothing go through those brain of yours? Well, now that there is no more fuss to be made, you have to hold onto the survivors until the designated time for us to aid you into programming them and putting back into the killing game. We will pick you all up to headquarters for the next briefing and Despair Minion missions in an hour, so absolutely no funny business from the survivors in the meantime. At least tell me that directive got into your skulls, or do I need to repeat that again?"

"Orders... received..." Tsumugi said in a monotone voice, giving a salute to the girl. The mastermind of the killing game had put herself in the forefront as the leader, somewhat satisfying the girl with a hum while she once again looked around. For some reason, she had settled for Rantaro before she finally talked once more.

"Let's hope the survivors wouldn't be a pain in the neck like you were Rantaro-onii-chan~"

A ripple of tension went through everyone, especially for the once dead, especially Rantaro who would have visibly startled if Kaito didn't immediately rest his hand on Rantaro's shoulder, to ground and stabilize him.

"Akari," Rantaro said, in the same flat monotone voice that sends a shiver down for the survivors because the pain increases tenfold to hear such lifelessness, more reason to get out or more reason to stay and find out.

"Hmm, nothing else to say to your little sister, Rantaro-onii-chan?" the girl, now revealed as Akari, asked. While the rest seemed unsurprised by this turn of events, the survivors were a different story. Questions ran through their head but they never knew much about Rantaro's personal life, or how his little sister suddenly decided to show herself and become relevant when she never-

"More like the tipping-"

"Opportunity so-"

Maki, Shuichi and Himiko winced, although that would only be obvious to outsider perspective if one were to look at their eyes that were closed tight from the headaches they now received from unexpected memories. Yet, they cannot speak about it from gags, nor gesticulate when Kaito, Kaede and Tenko were holding onto them so tightly to restrain movement.

Yet, when the three opened their eyes to look at each other, still full of doubts and at a loss of facts, they knew what happened. They were almost sure they remembered the same thing, what with the same trigger when it happened although they cannot confirm.

The survivors had been told, throughout that long story from the rest about the unbelievable VR and a past with the others about Hope's Peak, the conspiracy and what they thought reality turned to fiction turned to reality again, that their memories about all that would be regained through flashes like that. Yet, it was easy to disbelieve out of hand because after all, how could memories be trusted after the Flashback Light debacle.

But putting that in perspective, what can be trusted?

As if noticing the tension from the survivors, the grip holds have been made a little gentler, almost as if patting them in warm comfort. Unfortunately, nothing can be seen beyond the bear mask to get any feeling other than from body language.

While the survivors sorted through this dilemma, juggling with the facts about how the Akari that was before them through screen might have been the trigger to their killing  game, the rest went into deadly silence, as if they have nothing more to say. As if they do not even want to speak in the first place. Yet, Akari was waiting for a response and response she was given.

"I'm going to see you again. Then I will say what I have to say," Rantaro finally answered.

"Hmph, for the sake of privacy and not wanting an audience, huh? That's boring, Onii-chan," Akari teased.

"But isn't it the boredom that makes it despairing?" Rantaro asked, and it was only at the word despairing that emotion could actually be heard from his voice for the first time the survivors woke up here.

"Upupupu, you have throughly become a Despair Minion, Onii-chan. It is inevitable, no matter what you have said as a survivor before. I can't wait to see the same result for the survivors we have now," the girl said maniacally.

"We look forward to it," Tsumugi responded in kind and with that, the girl simply nodded, waved goodbye and with nothing left to said, turned off the screen.

The live message ended there and the three survivors were experiencing too many feelings, from confusion, trust (from little to a lot), fear...

And anticipation.

Almost at once, everyone took off their Monokuma masks just as the screen started turning on again, a grey static before...

Once again, everyone, except the survivors, were ready to put back their Monokuma masks, looking nervous if the Minion were to come back on screen, if-

"Don't even think of putting those back on! When I want to see you guys, I want it face to face! We miss you~"

"Queen?" Kokichi asked, nearly flabbergasted at who appeared on screen. And Kokichi's DICE member was not the only one...

"Shuichi, I'm so glad you are alright."

"Maki-chan... Maki-chan...!"

"Himiko, I'm glad you passed through those trials and tribulations, your magic stronger than ever..."

The survivors were shocked altogether by this sudden turn of events.

"Uncle?" Shuichi asked, extremely surprised to see the man he always remembered, briefly thought a lie when Tsumugi pulled off the fiction twist and a surge of warmth at the familial love coming from those eyes and gestures that could only come from someone as close as family, truly like his uncle.

"You... you brats..." Maki murmured, disbelieving. She clearly remembered the children, older than the ones in her memories but the same snot nosed, clinging kids that loved to flock around her. They look so happy to see her, and as if the emotion was contagious, a smile graced Maki's features in return.

"Ma- master...?" Himiko asked, tears springing up from her eyes at the sudden unexpectedness of it all. First Tenko and Angie, now her master who had gone through a magical journey never to be found again but now...

"What are they doing here? How could they be here?" Maki finally demanded from the rest, who had simply looked to the DICE member, Queen, for an explanation that they simply don't have.

"Oh, so you don't remember to that point. Well, I know that you have gotten a call from the Despair Minion and had no time bringing them up to speed so I will make it short and simple. After the Tragedy, you along with your family and friends you manage to alert and rescue sheltered in a bunk room that we are currently in. The people you see before you are the close ones you have saved from the Tragedy," Queen stated.

"But... but..." Shuichi stuttered, still disbelieving the events happening before him. After all, they had been told about how fictional they had been, their backstories and all. The fact that a fictional character's uncle was staring back at him with worry, something that should have been real to Shuichi but he was told it was not and even proven that it might not be real... he felt light headed and confused.

Himiko and Maki were in similar states. Even now, the survivors didn't know what they could believe in. It would be easier to believe everything Tsumugi had told them during the final trial was a lie. However, their memories were fake in some parts because they do not remember attending Hope's Peak during the Tragedy but after. They expected a normal world with Ultimates, not to be stuck in a despairing apocalypse.

Reality was something the survivors had to catch up on but they don't want to be bamboozled by it either. Considering they have gotten out of a VR reality that made real life fiction came true for them, how much of this was real life fiction instead of true reality?

"How long can you deny this?" Shuichi's uncle asked quietly, "Can't you believe in your eyes anymore, or your ears? I know this reality is not what you expect, but then... when has reality ever been anything we expect?"

Shuichi startled at what his uncle had said but was not annoyed with how blunt he was when he remembered the man always being like that, as kind as he was a no-nonsense person. That dose seemed to give him clarity...

"And if it's fictional?" Maki asked quietly, still stuck on that point. Still stuck on something that had caused endless misery and despair.

"But Maki-chan," one child poured to her, "We have always lived in a story. Isn't that what you have told us, to make life fun? We are all the heroes in our story so let the heroes help out others with chores in the orphanage and have fun. Does it matter, if this is a story when life is the story?"

Maki faintly remembered that when taking care of kids, convince them to help out and do chores, she would spin tales and games to make it fun, especially those who loved stories and she will play make believe so that they will comply.

Maki wanted to deny that both situations were completely different but a child's innocence can cut through the complexity of the matter and left her thinking.

"Life is a stage, with the stories we have acted to real life. We live dreaming instead of boggled down by reality. That is a truth for mages like us, so I plead... to all of you, can't you accept and adapt to the world we now live in? Like all the magic shows that you have performed, my apprentice..." Himiko's master piped up.

Himiko felt like she could relate, although she wasn't entirely sure she believed in the reality but she had been open minded to surrender, to give in. Putting it in her master's context gave her control over the reality she had, wanting to rise to her master's challenge and adapt to the show called life. That's how it had always been with her master as she grew up a mage, with life lessons, hidden challenges and wanting to be great as her master. Stirring up old feelings.

Only nostalgia could be felt between all of them, almost forgetting their own predicament and wanting to fall back to what they had used to know. But it was Maki who quickly caught herself from the sudden shift and went back with a more accusing tone in her bite, directed towards Queen as she avoided looking at the kids.

"What is the meaning of this?" Maki demanded, slightly disturbed, "This... can't-. Why is this happening?!"

"To get you out of your denial phase stat," Queen said bluntly, "I know you all have emotions and turmoil that would take time to get over but news flash, we don't have that time so if we have to quickly go through a healing process and compromise a little, with your closest as persuasive confidants that can listen and convince you... well..."

"So you decided to go for... shock therapy? For whoever the survivors will be," Rantaro said, after a shocking reunion.

"Well, what else do you expect?" Queen asked, "We don't have time for any feelings, however cruel that is. We don't have enough time to just ease through the trauma when we are all crushed by it. After all, the only cure for that stuff is to end this Hope vs Despair BS once and for all. And to end it is if we all could work together in a functional manner by stuffing the trauma back in our minds, get down to business and cry when it's over. Practicality over emotions, after all."

"Brutal," Kokichi said happily, but did not elaborate further than that.

"Of course, it is," Queen shrugged, "And showing their loved ones could help... motivate them in that direction."

"This sounds like blackmail???" Shuichi cut in, still not comprehending anything.

"Oh no, at least don't think it like that," Queen dismissed flippantly in a way that could get under people's skin, "It's motivation. After all, this is for your own good too. I mean, after this, where will you go? What will happen to you? I know it's hard to believe, especially after such a meta ending but at least stick with the life that we are showing you, with the pros, opportunities and hopes to regain it back."

"And what if it's all a trap?" Maki asked, steel in her voice and not yet willing to jump into something that involved blackmail even if it was for their own good.

"Harukawa-san," Shuichi's uncle piped up, "Don't think this as blackmail but... an uneasy truce. If it's an uneasy truce, you have the power to believe whether it's a trap or not and escape anytime."

"Uneasy truce?" Maki asked, narrowing her eyes.

"You don't believe in this reality yet but no matter what you think, you cannot deny that this is the reality you are living in. And we all want the same thing in this reality. We all want our normal lives back. All of you can work together for that, right? And any time you don't like it, you can take advantage of us and figure things out on your own."

The survivors look at each other when it was Himiko's master that spoke up this time:

"In the end, you will need help. A lot has happened to all of you so it's not surprising that you can't trust anything. But there are others here that you can place your trust on. Take your time, let them prove themselves to you and ride this wave. Unfortunately, you don't know everything yet so what better place and time to gather information with everyone here?"

Shuichi and Himiko were inclined to believe their loved ones, especially when they were like how they remembered them (even with fake memories but are they really fake? All of them? Shouldn't some be given the benefit of a doubt?)

Maki was still skeptical but the kids started pulling the puppy dog eyes on her which she unfortunately still wasn't very immune to. Even when Shuichi and Himiko weren't targets, they also dealt damage.

"Maki-chan, please believe us! If you still don't believe, then make it a game. One with rules set by you and when you finish playing, you will have the happy ending you desire. Please!"

There were so many people who were convincing the survivors to stay, to understand that this was their reality and what their best bets were. They couldn't even say they were wrong when there was nowhere else to turn to and going about this alone without any information would be a bad idea.

They didn't know how much they could take if this was another fake story or game concocted by twisted villains for them to go through but it was time not to think everything in such a worst case scenario basis. Their classmates and their loved ones, there was no reason to believe they weren't real. They keep trying to prove themselves over and over.

Looking at each other, they decided on this compromise.

All they had to do was keep proving themselves over and over again. So when the survivors nodded in understanding, asked what they had to do, the relief was palpable among all of them.

They had quickly worked together, trying to bring the survivors up to speed with a lot of reassurances. Only their closest friends had approached the survivors and was there for them every step of the way remembering old life and going through the motions of a plan that sounded very much like a spy game.

The survivors were apprehensive about their role at the Future Foundation since they would be left to their lonesome with unknown people just after being told to accept the help from their close classmates about this whole situation. But yet, they reassured that they will always be there with forms of communication between them and that they will all help get each other out in a jam.

It could also be stated as a challenge for the survivors, to see everything with their own eyes but at least with the perspective of people more accepting about the reality, or really the story before them and form their own judgements. In no uncertain terms, they believe whatever the survivors choose would be the right thing.

"Why? Because you trust us no matter what?" Shuichi asked the rest.

Kaito answered, differently from what anyone else expected but no less a Kaito answer, "Because we all want the same thing so no choice you guys make would ever hinder us from our goals!"

Their same goal, their happy ending which might be different depending on the individual but the same for everyone in principle. A peaceful world without despair, of a life they had remembered back in the killing game before the killing game even started...

Eventually, they are slowly learning about their old lives, so foreign to the ones they know so far. And yet so fitting and true to who they know they were, as Ultimates and not as normal but deranged people Tsumugi has painted everyone out to be during the meta reveal.

Thinking about Tsumugi reminded them about the enemies they made in the killing game despite everyone's status here as classmates. Even now, it was surprising to see victim and killer working together without any hint of grudges or wariness although they may have been very well hidden. All of them don't know whether they can accept their enemies, even if they were reaching for the same goal.

However the rational part had to remember that the killing game brought the worst out of them all and everyone else that the survivors have talked to admitted they were still hateful and begrudging of friend turned enemy during that killing game but with the luxury of time that the survivors unfortunately do not have, they admitted that talking, compromising and seeing that other people prove themselves again and again... it was enough to push aside differences, until convinced otherwise.

It would not be easy, especially for Tsumugi who the survivors felt was the cause of this mess although they knew deep down it was more complicated than that. However, compromise had always been a two way street. If they wanted the others to prove themselves, the survivors have to do the same. Testing old waters, trying to understand how this all goes and confused to no end, and yet...

That fitting and true feeling settled over the survivors peacefully, making them feel they can live and continue living this life as they felt more determined to keep to their resolution.

Until everything is over, they could choose to embrace them. When everything is over, they could always have new ones. When it felt like the other shoe will drop and that it was not the life they ever thought...

'Then, please... keep proving yourselves over and over again,' the survivors thought, once they have made their decisions.

This was not the best ending but not the worst either. It was a second chance no one would really expect, and throughout, it was a second chance worth pursuing.

As long as they prove that they are the better option, they can keep on.

No matter what happens next.

reach4thestars: That was obvious the moment you typed out your laugh...

50ShadesOfRed: And all there's left is Kiibo, Yonaga and Hoshi. And then we are done with this, right?

Morgana: I relate so much... Now I c y I chose this name. We are kin... we understand each other.

GayOrGremlin: LOL.

Robojury: Anyway, I quite like my name, and this would be a much better code name than my last one...

GayOrGremlin: What's wrong with being called Baymax? 🙁

Robojury: I am my own robot and I choose my own nickname. The reason why I let you call me Baymax back then was because we needed code names and I couldn't think one on the spot!

Robojury: Still regret you choosing code names, you robophobic heathen 🙁

GayOrGremlin: Hey, you don't have to be so mean! What did I do?

Robojury: Don't think I forgotten the memes...

TripleG: What memes? 👀

Robojury: May it never be spoken or by Kami-sama I will question my sanity.

GayOrGremlin: They weren't that bad!

Robojury: I beg to differ.

GayOrGremlin: Then beg.

BLACKPINK: Anyway, I guess we all have no problems with our nicknames, right?

Only1Truth: Nope.

reach4thestars: Nope

50ShadesOfRed: No.

FemSebastian: I find my nickname adequate.

GentTarzan: No problem!

2gd4Hogwarts: No

say'thot'cuelightsaber: Nope!

Robojury: Anything's better than Baymax.

GayOrGremlin: How about Wall-E? 😉

Robojury: Absolutely not. 😡 No more memes.

GayOrGremlin: 😢Anyway, just remember to call me King. Don't be confused bout that, K?

bondageXmasks: I have no problem with mine.

Oracle: Nope!

TripleG: Fucking no problem.

Mystique: I like mine.

NoAnimeNoLife: I'm plainly OK with mine.

Morgana: This is a good name.

BLACKPINK: Great, so these will be our code names...

GayOrGremlin: Something like out of a spy movie!

BLACKPINK: But @say'thot'cuelightsaber

say'thot'cuelightsaber: Yeah?

BLACKPINK: I'm a little worried about your nickname... I mean, say what happens if any boy wants to call you using your nickname...

say'thot'cuelightsaber: So?

BLACKPINK: Well, your name has 'thot' in it. And if a guy said that...

say'thot'cuelightsaber: They will get the lightsaber!

BLACKPINK: Yeah... that. Maybe we should choose another nickname, for the sake of the guys...

say'thot'cuelightsaber: If BLACKPINK say so... n...

say'thot'cuelightsaber changed nickname to FiteLikeAGirl.

GayOrGremlin: I think I should change mine too. No more gay jokes and I'm not even gay.

TripleG: Press X to doubt.

GayOrGremlin: No one cares, bitch.

GayOrGremlin changed nickname to PantaKing

PantaKing: Much better.

Only1truth: If your not gay, then why that name?

PantaKing: Dont't tell me u forgotten, Only1truth, It's TripleG's fault!

TripleG: Eek!

PantaKing: Out of one of our more 'fun' memories (no thx 2 NoAnimeNoLife), the nickname stuck due to a play she produced and afterwards, that disaster 4 cow udders decided to stick the name and I couldn't change it... until I realized I could now.

TripleG: Disaster... 4 cow udders...

50ShadesOfRed: It was either that play, or a personal rendition of the Cell Block Tango. If the only bad thing is that name, then thank Kami-sama.

TripleG: But... leotards...

BLACKPINK: Ignoring that for now, we all know what we need to do right.

Oracle: Yep, yep. This group chat is used 4 our codenames and communicating once we separate three way. And we can only use these names in this chat from now on... Got it!

NoAnimeNoLife: OK, then team out!

PantaKing: ... U just wanted to say that, didn't u?

NoAnimeNoLife: So? Y can't I?

reach4thestars: Nothing wrong with that! Now let's get this show on the road!

NoAnimeNoLife: N he has the last word...

Soon after, everyone finally disengaged from their phones, finding they still have to complete a few more things...

A lot of people have been looking more at the survivors, surprised but glad that they had taken everything that happened more easily despite the small timeframe, even able to... 'get along' with the more hated characters.

They could only hold on to this for so long, and whatever happens after this whole mess, it is all up to everyone.

A/N: It's not the perfect solution but it was the only psychological accepting thing that I thought would work for their whole situation even when at the end of it, I just want to bring them all for therapy that the despair apocalypse unfortunately does not have T_T.What happened to all of them is something that needs time, acceptance, life-changing moments and a lot of therapy that was not possible any time in the foreseeable future. Thus, compromise it is! Also I'm not a psych person or anything so I just can't find a great psychological solution but this is the best I can do, which might be inversely the worst thing I have done but sue me that I'm not a psychology major. It's also shorter than previous chapters but consider it a prologue of sorts while I figure out this new part.
