17. The Terrible Truth
"I'll be back around 7:30 pm, sweeheart." Oliver kisses her tenderly before leaving. He locks the door behind him.
Hayden finds herself alone in his big house. She decides to go snack a little thing. She opens the door of the fridge and leaves to make a sandwich of peanut butter. She eats quietly leaning against the kitchen countertop, lost in thought.
A little later, while she is smoking a cigarette, lying on the sofa, she suddenly has a big desire to vomit. She rushes to the bathroom, one hand on her mouth.
She kneels before the toilet and vomits all her meal. Once finished, she sits on the floor, a hand resting on her forehead. Was she pregnant?
She had her menstrual period last month and the doctor who examined her during her miscarriage told her that due to the blow she had received to the uterus one of her fallopian tube had been damaged. It would be difficult for her to fall pregnant again.
In the middle of the afternoon, the phone rings. Hayden hesitates to answer. The ringing is insistent, maybe it's important?
"Hello?" Hayden asks in a suspicious voice.
"What were you doing?" Asks Oliver's voice at the other end of the handset.
"I hesitated to answer, the last time you told me not...,"
"Sweetheart, listen to me," interrupted Oliver, in a grave voice. "Lana managed to leave Briarcliff with the tape of my confession. Whatever happens, doesn't answer if someone knocks on the door, doesn't open anyone and hides you, I'm sure she'll give us a little visit."
"Wait, and you?" She asks, worried.
"I'm trying to get home as soon as possible, don't worry." Oliver tries to sound reassuring but she feels a nervousness in his voice.
"I had to tell you, I think I am..." Hayden is suddenly silent. Maybe the moment is badly chosen to tell him that she is pregnant.
"Yes, I'm listening?"
"Uh, nothing, I forgot what I meant." Finally, she doesn't want to talk about it.
"Oh, okay, it doesn't matter, sweeheart. I hurry, and don't forget, stay well hidden." Oliver hangs up immediately.
Early in the evening, Hayden comes out of the bathroom as she hears the front door open gently. She remains hidden in the corridor.
It's not Oliver, he would have announced that he had returned. No, it was probably Lana. Hayden had searched the whole house to find a weapon of some sort. She had found a gun in a drawer under Oliver's cocktail bar.
She hears the steps in the living room slowly, then nothing.
Half an hour later, the front door opens again. She hears someone putting the keys on the furniture at the entrance. It's Oliver, he always puts the keys on the small piece of furniture at the entrance as soon as he enters the house.
Hayden hears him go into the living room, hastily. The lights in the living room suddenly light up and she hears Lana's voice, asking Oliver if he is in a hurry.
"Ah, you're here, it will save me from going all over town to find you." Oliver said calmly, trying to look casual.
Hayden hears the "click" of a gun, surely pointed at Oliver.
Lana tells him that the police shouldn't be late. She gave them the tape with the confession. Oliver feels relieved and confesses that living with secrets is not easy.
As she asks him to sit down, Oliver walks over to the bar to get a Martini. Hayden smiles, he always takes a glass of whiskey or Martini to relax when he comes home.
"You're not going to ruin my last chance to have a Martini." He said in a playful tone, Hayden could even imagine his smirk. "There is no alcohol where I go."
Lana asks him to tell her about Wendy's death and what he has done to her.
"It's really a bad story, are you sure you want to hear all the details?" Oliver asks calmly.
Oliver then tells how he killed Wendy and why, unlike the other victims, he decided to keep her intact. Wendy was his first sexual encounter. He said he could keep his body for practice, while his relationship with Lana evolved.
He tried several ways to approach the body, but everything seemed wrong. Then he turned it over and this time it worked. And it was incredible, better than anything he could imagine.
"It's thanks to Wendy that this miracle grows in you." Oliver said slowly. What? Lana is pregnant with him? Hayden suddenly felt nauseous.
"You're insane," insults Lana. "We figured it out when you chained me to a bed and called me Mommy."
"I hardly think so, Lana." Oliver drinks a sip of Martini before turning to her and smiling maliciously. "I'm clearly insane."
Hayden gently opens the door of a corridor and sneaks into the entrance without making a noise, the gun in the hand.
"You don't want to keep the baby, do you?" Asks Oliver.
"Even if I kept him, you'll never see him because you're gonna grill on that chair." Lana replied with disgust.
Oliver turns his back to her and opens the drawer of the bar.
"Then you are no longer of any use to me." He said as he rummaged through the drawer. "You will be known to have been my last victim."
"NOOOOO!" Yells Hayden as she rushes into the living room with the weapon pointed at Lana.
When a shot is heard and the heavy sound of a falling body on the ground.
