Chapter 21

Once Riddhima stormed out the door Gauri was left standing in front of Jhanvi who had her hands folder over her chest staring at her.

"Do you think my decision is fair?" Jhanvi asked.

"I think that it's a decision that would ensure that in the end we would still be able to produce a garment worthy of the Old and Classy line." Gauri calmly replied.

"This girl is quite clever." Jhanvi thought to herself. Even though the designs she saw that day did impress her Jhanvi still knew that the young woman standing before her was inexperience and to be given this big opportunity would only make her days here more difficult.

"Do you know what this opportunity means Ms. Sharma?"

"I do."

As Gauri stood there she could see Jhanvi's concern but if she ran away now she might as well pack her bags and leave Mumbai. With this chance Gauri was going to give it her all so that she would never end up with any regrets. At least if she failed she would be able to be at peace knowing that she had tried her best. She was also well aware of her inexperience and that the task at hand was harder than one might think. Her design on paper was flawless and beautiful but to bring it to life was going to be difficult.

"I know that I lack experience but I will make up for it with my hard work."

Jhanvi couldn't help but smile while letting out a sigh that confused Gauri.

"I do not doubt your hard work Ms. Sharma but remember one thing. No matter what happens during this time if you are unable to produce a dress then consider that you have failed. I do not care about the reason why you were unable to or if circumstances had arise not in your favor. If you turn your back even for a second someone will always be there to snatch away what was once yours. Do you understand what I am saying?"

Gauri was grateful for Jhanvi's warning. Even though she has never worked in a big company like this before she wasn't naive either. Just because her goal in life was to pass her days designing clothes and coming home to a warm household doesn't mean other people would believe it. But that doesn't mean she would steer clear of things presented to her either. If she tried to avoid opportunities just to avoid trouble Gauri knew that the end result would only be harmful to herself because a place like has no room for the kind hearted. There will always be someone who wants you to fall if you are flying too high.

"I understand."

***********************************************

Omkara was feeling a bit irritated that his schedule today prevented him from returning to the office. After 2 meetings this morning Omkara was now sitting in the back of his car looking through documents for the next meeting. Feeling a bit light headed Omkara looks down at his watch to see that he had only allowed himself 30 minutes for lunch. He hated to rush through his meals so he couldn't help but grimace at his own plight but the moment his eyes landed on the lunchbox next to him the corner of his lips raised into a warm smile. When his driver accidentally looked into the rear mirror he was shock to see the man behind him smiling.

"Find a good place to park the car." Omkara ordered.

"Yes sir."

As he set the lunchbox on top of his lap Omkara happily opened the lid and the moment the smell of rice hit his nose he could feel his stomach squirm in hunger. When he saw the chicken mixed in with a variety of vegetables packed to one side he didn't even bother to dig out the fork that was by his side as he used his fingers to take his first bite. It didn't take long for him to finish the food but the moment he saw the empty container he felt regretful.

"I should have saved some for later."

Closing the lid to set the lunchbox aside Omkara set his sites back towards his documents.

"I am done. Let's go to the next meeting."

"Yes. Sir."

When the car started to move Omkara checked his phone to see if he had missed any calls from Khanna and when he saw that there was none his mind was at ease.

"I guess she is doing fine."

****************************************

Khanna felt like he had spent his entire day being useless as he watches Gauri from his Boss's computer. When he remembered Omkara suggesting he install audio in the cameras he couldn't help but scoff.

"Why need audio when all she does is work silently by herself?"

The more he watched Gauri the more annoyed he had become. Khanna was determined that after today he will assure his boss that Ms. Sharma did not need to be monitored but the moment he saw Riddhima enter the fabric room he couldn't help but feel that something bad was going to happen.

Jhanvi had given Gauri back her design for the dress that Omkara wanted to use in the commercial. With the silk fabric she had gotten yesterday with Riddhima Gauri had cut out a small piece to see how different type of stitching would look. She tried embroidering a lily and realize just how delicate silk really was because one harsh tug resulted in many undesirable wrinkles.

"This will take me many hours." Gauri thought to herself.

Just looking at the design she had drawn for the hem of the dress Gauri knew she would be spending her days at the office well into the night but thankfully the office was always open till 8 PM since her boss would only leave at that time.

When Gauri had successfully grasp how to work with silk she had wanted to cut out a larger piece now to start on her dress. Using a razor to precisely cut the delicate fabric without causing any frays Gauri used her other hand to tug the silk taut as she slowly let the razor slice through the fabric.

It was 5 o'clock when Riddhima walked by the fabric room. When she saw Gauri immersed in cutting the silk from yesterday he eyes were filled with anger at the outcome from her scheme. She knew from that moment that this village girl was not so stupid and that she had to use extreme measures to pluck this weed out of her way.

Seeing that Gauri had not noticed her presence Riddhima walked up behind her and pretended to stumble causing the razor to slice through Gauri's finger.

"Ah!"

Grinning from ear to ear as she sees the bright red color start to seep from Gauri's dainty fingers.

"Oops. Sorry. I just wanted to see what you were doing and tripped a bit."

Gauri quickly pulled away from the silk in order for her blood to only stain the floor while Riddhima stood there smiling.

Khanna's eyes was about to jump out of it's sockets when he saw what was happening. Grabbing the screen to make sure his eyes were not playing tricks on him Khanna slumped down onto his boss's chair.

"Oh Shit. Should I call him?"

Just when he was about to pull out his cell phone Khanna saw Gauri take a discarded piece of fabric and wrapping it around her finger.

"Damn if only I could hear what they are saying. Boss was right. Really need to install audio in these cameras."

"You should really go get that looked at Gauri."

Without a word Gauri calmly wrapped her finger with the very same silk that she had worked on earlier. The only disappointing feeling she had was that her yellow lily was now dyed red. She had wanted to save that small piece and turn it into a handkerchief for Bhavya.

"No need. It was just a small cut."

"Well do be careful not to stain the silk."

With her hand putting pressure on her injured finger Gauri could only look at Riddhima who had a smirk on her face as she walked around the fabric room with her fingers grazing Gauri's silk.

"This silk is very beautiful. I can already imagine just how gorgeous this dress is going to be. I can't wait to see it."

The threatening tone in Riddhima's voice did not go unnoticed. Using her clean hand Gauri pulled the roll of silk away from Riddhima's sharp fingernails.

"I will be very careful as to not let anything happen to it."

Even when Riddhima kept walking closer Gauri refused to move to show any kind of weakness.

"Anything can happen if you don't pay attention village girl." whispered Riddhima.

When she pulled away from Gauri's ear she had expected to see fear in her eyes but what she saw just angered her more. Eyes that held no emotion as if it was looking at nothing but Riddhima had to calm herself because she didn't want to ruin her plans that she has for Gauri.

"Well I am leaving now. See you tomorrow."

When Khanna saw Riddhima leave the room he felt that he was finally able to breathe.

"What should I do? Should I call him just to tell him this?"

As he struggled to see if this was deemed important enough to report to his boss he heard a "ping" from his phone.

"I am returning."

Khanna did not know if he should reply or wait but the sudden image of his Boss's cold gaze made him shudder.

"Ms. Sharma met with a minor accident."

Expecting a reply right away Khanna was left feeling scared when there was no reply.

"He's mad."
