Chapter 12: Imagination
"Aren't we gonna talk about last night?"
☆
Milo was woken by the sound of his phone's alarm going off. It was Monday.
He leans across to his night stand to silence his alarm before laying back onto his bed. He stares up at his ceiling, trying to catch up with the most eventful weekend he had had in a long while.
It doesn't take long to recall the night's bad dreams. Those reoccurunt nightmares, then..."Oh shit!" Milo covers his face with his hands, remembering the moments after he awoke from his nightmare...Hester!
He remembers it all. His friend stood in his doorway, asking if he was ok. How he somehow knew what the nightmare was about. How Hester comforted him with a kiss, then pleasured him with his body.
Milo looked down at his naked torso. Bed sheets still wrapped and twisted around his lower half. He catches sight of the sweater laying in a jumble on the floor. What would happen next? What had he done? Had he been stupid? Had Hester made a mistake?
Jude then enters his thoughts. Ahh...Jude. Sweet, cute, kind Jude. The guy he had been trying so hard to kiss, yet still hadn't quite gotten there.
Milo groans into the palms of his hands. Had he just messed up everything?
Time was now against him, as he pulls himself from his bed, to get ready for work. He would have to see Jude today, to at least speak to him. Apologise maybe, though they weren't strictly dating, he felt like he owed Jude something.
But first, he had to face his flatmate.
Once washed and dressed, Milo heads into the shared living space of the apartment. Hester's bedroom door is closed. Milo wonders whether he should knock or not. It was still fairly early but Milo could never tell what his sleep pattern was. He decides to leave him to sleep for now and grabs himself some breakfast.
Milo checks his messages and sees he has one from Jude.
Jude
I don't want to make things awkward at work. Can we maybe try again?
Milo sighs as he takes in the message. Does he want to try again? Before last night, the answer would have been a clear yes, but now he's not so sure.
He is about to find some kind of response to text, when Milo hears a door close. He looks up to see Hester slowly walking towards the couch and laying upon it, the same tshirt and jeans that he had been sporting all weekend.
"Hey." Hester says followed by a yawn, then says nothing more.
Milo looks at his friend in confusion. "Hey?...just hey? He questions.
Hester lazily looks up from the couch, giving eye contact to Milo. "Umm...good morning...is that better?"
Milo gets up from the breakfast bar stool and walks over to Hester, looking over him just laying on the couch. "Hessy... Aren't we gonna talk about last night?" Milo gestures, arms raised.
"Why? What happened?" Hester says, resting his head back on the couch lazily.
"What happened? Hessy are you serious? We had sex! That's what happened." Milo can feel his voice raising slightly. Why was Hester being so blasè?
You're imagining things my friend." Hester half chuckles.
Milo walks around from the back of the couch. "No I wasn't. I was having a nightmare. You came in, you sat on my bed, we kissed we..." Milo even begins to doubt his own words. Then he remembers something. "Your sweater. It's on my floor." That must be proof enough.
"Would that be the sweater you borrowed yesterday by any chance?" Hester points out, making Milo doubt himself yet again.
"But...but it seemed so real." Milo now really doubts himself. He had worn that sweater. Maybe he had dropped it there before getting into bed.
Hester now sits up and looks up at his friend, taking his hand. "Look...I know me being here is bringing stuff up from the past, I'm trying hard to leave, I really am! It's just, something is keeping me here right now."
Milo frowns at Hester. "You can stay here for as long as you need...but...those years back Hessy. Why did you suddenly disappear?" Milo so desperately needed to know. Had to know. Did he do something wrong? Was he in trouble?
Hester sighs. "You really don't remember do you?" Milo shakes his head. "Milo this is something you need to work out yourself. That's all I can say."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Milo snaps back, with Hester just shrugging his shoulders in response. Milo looks at Hester as he lays back down on the sofa with a vacant expression. He could feel himself getting wound up. "You know what? Just forget it!" He heads back to the kitchen and snaps up his phone from the counter, re reading the message sent from Jude.
He begins to message back
Milo
Sure Jude. We can start again. I would like that very much.
