The fake sun was high in the fake blue and cloudless sky, casting cheerfully artificial light on the bustling city of Thneedville. Everywhere you looked, you'd find cheerful people carrying about their daily tasks, and cute little robot birds flitted from tree to tree, chirping happily at each other. A gentle, artificial breeze blew through the air, making the plastic-like leaves on the synthetic trees flutter ever so slightly.
A tall boy was riding his bike through the center of Thneedville, his thoughts consumed by his desire to see his crush. At sixteen years old, he wasn't quite a man yet, but he felt mature beyond his years, especially when it came to matters of the heart.
As he pedaled down the street, he couldn't help but picture the smile that would grace his love's face when they saw him.
Leorio's mind was occupied by a specific person, Kurapika, a blonde haired boy who held his heart captive.
Leorio longed for the day when Kurapika would return his feelings, which he knew he would eventually. In the meantime, he was determined to come up with a strategy to win Kurapika over and make him see how much he cared.
After a short while of pedalling his bike through the streets of Thneedville, Leorio finally arrived at his destination, the unusually large red door of Kurapika's house. Leorio paused for a moment, his heart beating faster with anticipation, before taking a deep breath and ringing the doorbell.
Leorio couldn't help but wonder as he rang the doorbell and stood there, patiently waiting to see the man who he hoped would one day become his future husband.
The unusual design of the town crossed his mind as he observed his surroundings. It seemed like something out of a fictional story, but Leorio was brought back to reality as the door opened and Kurapika's face appeared before him.
As the door opened, Leorio was greeted by the sight of a shorter, blonde boy, Kurapika. Leorio's cheeks flushed a slight pink shade, and he shyly waved hello. His words came out in a nervous stutter. "Hey, Kurapika! Um, how are you?" Leorio asked, unable to hide his nervousness as he realised it had been two weeks since he had last seen his crush.
Kurapika greeted Leorio with a warm smile, "Hey, Leorio! It's been a while, hasn't it?" He then continued, "I've been doing good. Actually, I've been painting in the backyard. If you'd like, you can come and take a look."
Leorio couldn't help but notice the streaks of paint on Kurapika's face and clothing, finding it endearing. He smiled, thinking to himself how cute he looked.
Leorio's excitement was palpable as he nodded eagerly, saying, "Of course! Lead the way, Pika." Without any hesitation, Kurapika grabbed Leorio's hand and guided him through the neat and tidy interior of the house.
As they stepped out into the backyard, Leorio was greeted by the sight of an artificial landscape. Artificial trees, shrubs, and flowers grew in a seemingly natural arrangement, and even the grass under their feet felt incredibly convincing. The artificial breeze blew through, moving the leaves and petals with a hint of realness.
Leorio turned around to admire the backdrop of the yard and was taken aback by the sight of the numerous paintings covering the back of Kurapika's house. Each painting depicted these fluffy, green, things on slender sticks. Smiling warmly, Leorio exclaimed, "Kurapika, these paintings are lovely! Are they supposed to be green cotton candy?"
Kurapika let out a sigh and flopped down onto the soft, green grass, the artificial breeze blowing through his hair. Leorio followed suit, lying down beside him and gazing up at the fake sky above them. The moment felt serene, their eyes tracing the artificial clouds that drifted slowly overhead.
Kurapika spoke with a hint of excitement in his voice, "Oh, silly Leorio, those aren't cotton candies, they're trees, real trees!"
Leorio, still staring at the blonde man, suddenly realized he had been mistaken. He quickly redirected his gaze upwards to the artificial blue sky, taking in the sight of the fluffy green growths on long stems that he had originally thought resembled cotton candy that were painted on the back of Kurapikas home.
Leorio's eyes widened in surprise as he learned that the fluffy, green growths on long stems were based on the long lost concept of real trees. He had never given much thought to the idea that such things had once existed, and the knowledge sparked a curiosity within him.
Leorio turned his gaze back towards Kurapika, eager to hear more about this fascinating information.
Kurapika spoke softly as he closed his eyes, a dreamlike expression on his face, "If only someone gave me a real tree. I think I would love them forever." Leorio's gaze shifted back to the paintings, imagining what a real tree might look and feel like. He pondered on Kurapika's longing for something so simple yet profound, and it stirred a determination within him to find a way to fulfill that desire.
Leorio blushed furiously as he realized the implications of what Kurapika had just said. A tree, a real life tree, could be the key to winning his heart!
It was the perfect solution, and the thought of Kurapika being devoted to him filled him with a warm sense of happiness. Leorio smiled to himself, silently resolving to seek out a real tree and make Kurapika's wish come true.
Leorio quickly checked the watch on his wrist and then sprang up from the grass, realizing the time. "Oh no! I just realized it's family fun night!" he exclaimed. He quickly added, "I need to head out now, but I'll see you later!" Leorio's voice was tinged with regret at the short time he had spent with Kurapika, but he also knew he had to return home for the planned family night.
Kurapika stood up and waved goodbye to Leorio, "Goodbye, Leorio! See you soon, alright?" Leorio responded with a bright smile, "Of course, Kurapika! Bye bye!" With that, Leorio climbed onto his bike and pedaled away, his heart still racing from their conversation about Kurapika's wish for a real tree.
Leorio's mind raced with determination as he pedaled to his small, two-story house. He thought to himself, Kurapika wants to see me again, so I'll have to think of a way to get a tree. Despair mixed with excitement as he reached his destination, his mind already swirling with ideas on how to acquire a real tree for Kurapika.
Leorio took out his key and unlocked the front door, stepping into the house. Before he could take an additional step, he called out a quick, "I'm here!" He then locked his bike up by the front door.
Leorio sighed and entered the living room. It was usually a quiet house, as he only lived there with his mother and his quirky Grandma Bisky.
Leorio's thoughts weirdly went back to the day when his father left, but things had become more stable since then, in their own peculiar way. The room was filled with the soft hum of the TV and the faint, familiar scent of Grandma Bisky's perfume.
"Hello Son, how was it out there?" Leorio's mother approached him and gave him a kiss on the forehead. Leorio protested, "Mom! I'm a teenager, I don't need kisses, okay?" but his mother just rolled her eyes affectionately. He continued, "I'm doing alright, though. I just stopped over at Kurapika's house!" There was excitement in his voice as he mentioned Kurapika's name.
Leorio's mom nodded, a knowing smile on her face. She had a subtle hunch that her son had a bit of a crush on Kurapika, but she didn't mind; she found the boy to be very polite and respectful. Despite not knowing the full extent of Leorio's feelings for Kurapika, she supported their friendship wholeheartedly, and often observed the blush on her son's face whenever he mentioned the blonde.
Leorio went and placed his bag on the table. His mom informed him, "We're playing at the dining table this time, so come join us!"
Leorio followed his mother to the dining room, mentally preparing for another round of Candy Land with his grandmother. Grandma Bisky was already sitting at the table, her eyes practically sparkling with excitement.
Leorio entered the dining room and joined in the board game session. He sat down at the table and the family began to play some games together. The room was filled with the sound of cards being shuffled, dice being rolled, and the occasional laughter from Grandma Bisky as her competitive spirit shone through.
Leorio's mind slowly began to drift towards his thoughts about Kurapika and their earlier interaction. As the family continued to enjoy their board games, Leorio found himself struck with an irresistible urge to ask the question that had been on his mind since he arrived home.
He fidgeted in his seat for a moment, trying to gather his thoughts. Leorio then took a deep breath and spoke up, interrupting the flow of gameplay.
Leorio posed his question to his family, "So guys, do you know where I can get a real tree?" His mother gazed at him, dumbfounded by the odd request. She responded, "A tree, a real one? Why do you need a tree? We just got the latest artificial one in stock recently!"
Leorio redirected his gaze to the artificial tree outside the window. It lit up the evening with its vibrant, multi colored lights and also emitted pine smelling air. Despite the tree's artificial nature, it tried its best to replicate the presence of a real tree, but Leorio wanted something real.
Tonpa, who also happened to be the mayor of the city, was celebrated for his creation of artificial items such as trees, grass, and more. The artificial air was another one of his contributions, and it was essential for the residents of the town to breathe. Despite Tonpa's inventions being convenient, Leorio yearned for something more authentic and real, even besides Kurapikas request, he also wanted to experience what a real tree is like.
Tonpa was indeed the wealthiest person in town, but he was also notorious for his selfishness. His inventions came at a steep cost, yet the city's residents regarded him almost as if he were a magical being.
Despite his selfish nature and expensive creations, Tonpa exerted significant control over the city and its people. Leorio was not fond of Tonpa, he couldn't stand people like him, even though he's not once met the man.
Leorio persisted, "I understand, but I really need a real tree, for educational purposes!" His mom, growing weary of the conversation, chimed in, "Are you trying to impress your crush? If so, you might as well give up now." Her words, tinged with a mixture of concern and exhaustion, gave Leorio pause.
Leorio's mother stood up and walked away, clearly frustrated. She informed Leorio, "You've given me a headache, so I'm going to lie down." Leorio shook his head at his mother's words, feeling a mix of disappointment and determination to find a way to get a real tree for Kurapika.
With his mother's door closed, Leorio heard Grandma Bisky, in a hushed tone, suggest, "Oh, grandson, why don't you go visit the Onceler?" Leorio's curiosity was piqued by the mention of the Onceler, a man hes only ever heard in passing.
Leorio couldn't help but lean in closer after hearing the intriguing name Grandma Bisky had mentioned the Onceler. The name sounded familiar yet vaguely mysterious, sparking Leorio's interest.
Leorio settled down across from Grandma Bisky, the game still on the table between them. Grandma Bisky began to recount the legend of the Onceler, explaining that he was the last person with a seed of a real tree. Leorio listened intently, his curiosity and hope growing as he learned about this legendary figure who had the key to obtaining a real tree.
Leorio's interest deepened as Grandma Bisky continued the legend of the Onceler.
She revealed that the tale mentioned the Onceler's connection to the Lorax, who supposedly with the trees. Leorio's eyebrow lifted in surprise as he heard the mention of the Lorax, who was said to speak on behalf of the trees.
Leorio couldn't help but question Grandma Bisky's story, chuckling, "Grandma, I don't think you've taken your medicine today, have you?" Grandma Bisky just rolled her eyes in response and asserted her truthfulness, insisting, "Grandson, this is the truth! Head to the outskirts of the city and find the Onceler!"
Leorio's mind swirled with a mixture of excitement and skepticism. If the legend was true, he had hope of finding a real tree.
But first, he had to find the Onceler, who supposedly held the key, and was said to be connected to the Lorax. He sighed, feeling both overwhelmed and determined.
Leorio's determination ignited as a newfound courage washed over him. With an excited expression, he declared, "Okay, I'll do it! I'll go and try to find the Onceler!" His conviction grew stronger, and he was ready to embark on this unexpected quest to find the Onceler and obtain a real tree for Kurapika.
Grandma Bisky clapped her hands in support and smiled, "Good luck, grandson! And be careful not to get noticed by the mayor." Her words carried a hint of concern about the mayor, whom she harbored some doubts.
Leorio nodded understandingly, storing her words in the back of his mind as he prepared to embark on this secret quest.

In the quiet hours of the night, the town was peaceful as everyone lay asleep. A cold breeze blew through the streets, the only companion being the silvery glow of the moon that painted the surroundings with a serene aura.
Leorio stealthily crept towards the window, his senses keenly tuned to his surroundings. Thankfully, everyone in the house was fast asleep. With a soft whisper to himself, he announced, "Alright, everyone is asleep, it's time to go!" He skillfully slid out of the window, careful not to make a single sound.
Leorio jumped onto his bike, the cold night air nipping at his skin. As he began pedaling, he navigated through the quiet city streets. Finally, he arrived at the door that marked the boundary between the city and the outside world.
As Leorio pressed the red button that opened the metal door, he rode beyond the gates of Thneedville, his eyes widened at the sight of a barren landscape. The area looked like a scorching desert, with dry earth and cut off tree stumps spread across the land.
The contrast between the artificial world of Thneedville and the harsh realities outdoors was stark and disheartening.
Leorio's heart momentarily sank as he took in the sight of the devastated surroundings, but he quickly shook off the feeling, reminding himself not to rush to judgment. He realized that he didn't know what had led to this state of affairs over the years, and he couldn't blame anyone just yet. Leorio clenched his jaw and pressed onward, determined to find answers.
He continued his ride on his bike, the dry and scorched land stretching out before him.
The sight of so many cut off tree stumps only further fueled his desire to discover the truth behind this devastated state. Leorio pedaled onward, his mind full of questions and his determination unwavering.
As Leorio continued riding through the lifeless terrain, a peculiar sight caught his attention.
a small, yet noticeably tall tower like home stood out against the desolate landscape. Leorio's curiosity piqued as he took in the unusual structure.
Leorio arrived at the unusual structure, hopped off his bike, and called out, "Mister Onceler, sir? Are you in here?" He paused for a moment, listening intently for any signs of life within the building. Silence was the only response that echoed back.
As Leorio waited in the silence, disappointment started to creep in. He realized that he didn't know the location of the Onceler and wasn't entirely sure if he even existed. The uncertainty and doubts began to gnaw at Leorio's determination, making him question whether he had been on a wild goose chase all along.
Leorio was about to make his way back to his bike, feeling deflated, when an abrupt, loud shout suddenly pierced the silence. The unexpected noise commanded Leorio's attention, and he halted in his tracks.
Leorio, startled, spun around to face the building again, only to be met with the sight of a towering, imposing figure. "Ahhh!" he let out in surprise. The mysterious man looking at Leorio and questioned him, "Who are you?"
Leorio was taken aback by the man's appearance. Long black hair partially concealed the man's face, but when he pushed it aside, Leorio was met with a pair of eerily creepy bug eyes, pitch black and unsettling. A shiver ran down Leorio's spine as he took in the man's intimidating presence.
The man emerged from within the house, his creepy bug like appearance making Leorio's heart skip a beat.
With a mixture of nervousness and determination, Leorio gathered his thoughts and hesitantly asked, "Well, um, I was wondering if I could have the last tree seed?" As he spoke, Leorio scratched his head, finding it difficult to process the fact that this odd-looking creature before him was real.
Leorio's eyes widened in disbelief as the man, Illumi, introduced himself as the one and only Onceler. However, his disappointment grew as he heard the words, "and no, you may NOT have the last seed." Leorio's heart sank, and frustration began to well up within him.
After all the effort he had put in, traveling all this way only to be denied the very thing he sought, felt like a massive letdown.
As Leorio's disappointment threatened to overwhelm him, Illumi spoke again, sparking a glimmer of hope within Leorio's heart. "Well, maybe you can have it," Illumi said, "but first, I need to see if you are worthy. If you pass my test, then perhaps the last tree seed shall be yours."
Leorio found himself meeting Illumi's intense gaze, his eyes cold and calculating. Long strands of hair cascaded past Illumi's shoulders, reaching down to his waist, adding an air of mystery to his already spooky appearance.
His frustration getting the best of him, Leorio couldn't help but whine, "And how long will that take?" Illumi responded by drawing Leorio closer, looking at him intently. The distance between them closed as Illumi observed Leorio closely, his gaze appraising and calculating.
Illumi's eyebrow arched in curiosity as he posed the question, "Now, Leorio, why exactly do you want a tree in the first place?" His voice was calm and measured, but there was a hint of skepticism underlying his words.
Leorio paused for a moment, trying to formulate the perfect response. He then said confidently, "Well, I want it because I really want to show the mayor of our town, Tonpa, that we really need trees!" Illumi, however, simply let out a dismissive sigh, clearly unimpressed by Leorio's answer.
Leorio felt a pang of frustration as Illumi sarcastically commented, "Ok, ok, what a hero," and rolled his eyes.
Leorio couldn't help but look away in annoyance, feeling dismissed and belittled by the Onceler's apparent lack of respect for his motives.
Illumi's voice took on a more serious tone as he announced, "How about this, Leorio. I will tell you a story to help determine if you are the chosen one for the last real seed. Listen closely!" Leorio's initial eagerness was met with a whine, as he couldn't help but ask, "Is it going to be a long story?"
Illumi's patience worn thin, he snapped, "Just shut up!"
———— ✦
Illumi went on, "Years ago, when I was just a teenager, I made the decision to leave my terrible family behind and set out into the world to showcase my invention." Leorio's interest picked up once more, his curiosity piqued by the mention of an invention.
Illumi continued, describing his invention, "The Thneed, it was made from the leaves of a tree. It was meant to be...well, I don't know." Leorio furrowed his brow, slightly puzzled by the unusual description of the Thneed's purpose.
Illumi's eyes lit up as he reminisced about his dreams of the future, "Anyways! My family, as you can imagine, had no faith in me, so I set out to create a new future for myself. A future filled with money and attention, thanks to my ingenious Thneed!" Leorio's interest grew as he listened to Illumi's hopes and aspirations.
Illumi's eyes shone with a mix of emotions as he continued the tale, "But after traveling for days and growing weary, I finally reached the top of a hill, and when I looked over, all I could see was a vast land full of trees. They were of all shapes and sizes, and their vibrant colors filled my heart with hope." Leorio's eyes widened at the vivid description, picturing the lush landscape of trees that had filled Illumi's gaze.
Illumi's voice softened as he recalled the next part of the story, "I made my way down the hill and entered this incredible paradise. There were many animals that I was fortunate enough to befriend."
Leorio could almost see in his mind's eye the peaceful scene of Illumi surrounded by friendly creatures.
Illumi's voice grew somber as he reached the pivotal moment of his tale, "I set up my little tent house and took hold of my trusty axe. Without knowing the significance of my actions, I chopped down one of the many trees around me. But that single act of chopping would change my life forever." Leorio tensed up, wondering what could have happened
"After the tree landed on the ground, something unexpected happened. The sky darkened, and all the animals that had been by my side moments ago, quickly huddled together, as if sensing a shift in the atmosphere." Leorio leaned in closer, fully immersed in the unfolding story.
Illumi continued the narrative, "It looked as if a storm was about to roll in, but then something unexpected happened. Suddenly, a radiant light lit up the sky, and a figure descended from the heavens." Leorio's mouth dropped open, his eyes widening in disbelief at the unbelievable description.
Illumi's voice took a slightly mocking tone as he explained, "And I kid you not, the name of the heavenly figure was Lorax. Well, his real name was Hisoka, but he went by Lorax."
Leorio's expression changed from awe to confusion, unsure how to process this peculiar revelation.
Illumi chuckled as he described the eccentric appearance of the Lorax, "And the weirdest thing was, when he came down from the sky, his literal ass was in the air, like he was using it as a propellant to float or something!" Leorio's eyes widened even further, if that was possible, as he tried to visualize the ridiculous scene.
Illumi's tone turned into one of mild annoyance as he described the Lorax's reaction to the felled tree, "He then began to mourn the tree like a total freak, as if it was a dear friend or something."
Illumi imitated the Lorax's peculiar demeanor as he recited his lines, "NOW! Who did this?" With a dramatic flair, the Lorax scanned the surrounding animals before his gaze landed on Illumi. In a stern and flamboyant manner, he accused him, "You're EVIL! Evil, I say! How dares you!"
Illumi maintained a nonchalant demeanor as he confronted the Lorax, or Hisoka as he knew him, "Who the hell are you?" he asked, his eyes rolling at the bizarre spectacle unfolding before him.
Illumi recalled the Lorax's response, "I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees. So don't you dare cut anymore of the precious trees!" Illumi began to plead with the Lorax, "Please, I just need some to make my Thneed. I promise I won't cut anymore!" The air was thick with tension with the two.
The Lorax examined Illumi intently, a sly, almost unsettling smile appearing on his face. He said, "Alright, you can stay, but under one condition..." Illumi's heart skipped a beat, wondering what the bizarre request would be.
The Lorax continued with a suggestive tone, "I want to sleep with you," his smirk widening. Illumi's eyes widened in shock, a mix of disbelief and discomfort washing over him. m
Illumi took a moment to consider the Lorax's unusual request, a mixture of dread and resignation in his eyes. Finally, he sighed, reluctantly agreeing, "Ok, fine."
✦ ————
"Ok Leorio come back tomorrow and I shall finish the story!" Leorios eyes widened at The Onclers words.
"What do you mean by come back tomorrow?" Leorio exclaimed, his mouth still hanging open in disbelief. "I came all the way here hoping to find some answers, and you want me to come back tomorrow to hear the rest of the story? That's ridiculous!"
Leorio was still in shock, trying to process everything Illumi had just revealed. "Wait, you mean that's all you have to say? You let some random man sleep with you and now we're supposed to just leave it at that?"
He closed his eyes and exhaled, shaking his head in disbelief. "I don't understand how you can be so casual about something like that. But... I guess I'll see you tomorrow then," he said, his voice trailing off.
Leorio's mind was spinning as he cycled through the desolate landscape of tree stumps. "Did I really just spend the past hour listening to that guy's ridiculous story, and for what? I still don't know anything about that tree seeds whereabouts!"
Frustration and confusion coursed through his veins as he pedaled faster and faster, his knuckles turning white from his tight grip on the bike's handlebars. The dry heat did little to cool his agitated thoughts.
Leorio biked towards the gates of Thneedville, noticing that the sun was still down and the moon was still up, casting an eerie, silvery light over the town.
The streets were deserted, with not a soul in sight. The town appeared to be asleep, but Leorio knew that he needed to continue his search for the last real tree seed. With determination in his heart, he kept pedaling down the empty roads.
As Leorio biked through the quiet town, his thoughts turned to Kurapika. He hoped that Kurapika was safe and that he would understand the lengths Leorio was going to in order to impress him. He imagined Kurapika's reaction when he finally found the last real tree seed and showed it to him.
Leorio's heart raced, a mix of anxiety and excitement coursing through his veins. He couldn't let Kurapika down.
Leorio stealthily entered his house, quietly closing the door behind him. Feeling a sense of relief, he assumed he had successfully returned home undetected. However, unbeknownst to him, hidden cameras had been monitoring him from the moment he returned through the gates.
Tonpa, the greedy and self-centered mayor of Thneedville, had been watching Leorio on the cameras, a devious smirk playing across his face. His laugh echoed through the empty halls, the sound as sinister as a devil's cackle.
