The Rainbow Bar and Grill, Santa Monica (A/N : yes, I naughtily moved the fabled place for my own novel devices!) was the top club in town, busy every night and absolute bedlam when the Vampires came to roost.
This occurred mainly in the middle of the night but very occasionally, like today, they came for a meal before enjoying imbibing at the bar or, since BJ couldn't stand ithe ruckus anymore, in the new Vampire Room, so named, you guessed it, because the men only ever came out in the dark.
If you wanted a show, get your celeb fix so to speak, you wouldn't get it unless you were in the circle, one of the staff. No one bothered the men cause they were basically family, this dark 'clubhouse' of a bar, a home away from home.
Alice had, at first, invested in it when Beth saw the run down building and fell in love with the elephant sitting alongside the beach, it was a tax write off at first, due to the huge amount of renovations it took to bring it up to regulation; then suddenly it was THE place to be. The tax write off became a money maker in no time, running Beth off her feet.
Now Beth, to begin with, travelled with Alice on tours and the like but as it wore thin- think his backstage antics and those of the crew, she wasn't enthralled with the 24/7 of shit that took place. The die was cast for her to remain behind, when an unsavoury act was committed by a roadie from another band causing her heartache and torment. Never one to blab, all Alice knew of the event was something bad had happened.
So began the clubs foray into wild nights and antics, with a top security team and years of touring under her belt she stuck it out, safe in the knowledge of those around her were known, safe... friends.
Making a home in the back of the building that was sanctuary for Alice, if he was around, and herself.
Being an attached home meant there was passage into it from the club but that passage was secreted and well hidden, not a whole lot knew the security code on the door for one thing. Which concerned Beth greatly when she saw the men assembled on the rooftop. She was worried til Alices' ugly mug stepped forward and waved.
The club was great and she loved the place although as it grew and the partying got wilder the haunting images of touring would nip at her heels and make her stomach turn. Nope, she wouldn't allow it to crumble her, she would remember security is great and there would be no problems!
Now all those things Harry Nilsson said earlier were fairly on the money. She did indeed dress like a 'bag', loose clothing becoming a speciality of hers. From the outset Beth did not want to attract any man at any cost.
A man in a bar and full of beer or whisky was seldom willing to listen to a female when she told him to lay off or to stop grabbing her butt or any other part of her body, for that matter. Wearing her hair in a tight bun at the back of her neck was practical, no patron wanted a loose hair in their food, perhaps a high pony tail would be more becoming but the bun stayed, for now. Jeans, they're comfy and that's it, no mini skirt would make an appearance anytime soon for all of the reasons mentioned above!
Now the names- Bethany: blessed with the name at birth but she thought it suited a prettier girl, happy cheerful and friendly, and she really didn't feel like a Bethany.
Beth was the name her family called her from the time she was two.
And BJ....
Well BJ was Alice's nickname for her -Bethany Jane Cooper and she dug it.
The siblings were super close and she was proud of her brother even though he would wear way more eyeliner and mascara than she ever would!
Allowing the name BJ to become official, ie. To every other person she crossed paths with, happened right around the time they opened the doors to the club. It was easy to remember, simple for the patrons to recall and it gave Beth the feeling of strength however silly that sounded.
Beth and Bethany were sweet girls, BJ was tough and unforgiving. The name BJ also gave her a glass wall of security, many blokes that came in just glanced over her. Her dress, attitude and name had her disappearing into the background, she didn't mind she was left well alone.
Beth did like women but that didn't stop her liking men too, it's just the right one had never ever come along and piqued her interest enough for her to try and be pretty or girly or whatever the hell she 'should' be when courting a fella. Nor had anyone ever given her a run for her money in the smart alec stakes that Alice regularly ribbed her about.
So push open the door, pull up a chair and order a drink, or three.
Welcome to the Vampires Club.
