Saphire was Legolas' favorite sister. Well, she was his only sister. But that was what made her so special to him, and why he'd made it his personal task to protect her. Of course, he was only 25 -- the human equivalent of a twelve-year-old -- and Saphire was 20 -- a ten-year-old to the eyes of Men.

This particular day was special. But not in a good way.

Legolas and Saphire were running about in the woods playing chase. As always, they tried to stay within the boundaries their father had set. But as they continued their game, they went farther and farther into the woods; farther and farther away from the boundary. Saphire was finally able to touch her brother and run in the opposite direction. She knew it wouldn't be long before Legolas caught her, but she wasn't expecting to be grabbed so soon.

However, she quickly realized that she had not, in fact, been grabbed by Legolas, but by an Orc. She screamed as she caught sight of it and heard Legolas' surprised cry as well. But his surprise was not only that the Orc had his sister. No, it was at the large group of Orcs that stood behind their leader. He quickly pulled out his small fighting knives that he was learning to use and killed the Orc that held his sister. He then grabbed her wrist and they ran as fast as they could through the forest to their home. The Orcs were very close behind them and were quickly gaining ground.

"We need to get up into the trees!" Legolas told Saphire.

They paused shortly to get up into the tree. Legolas climbed first, being the faster and taller of the two, and then reached down to pull Saphire up. As Legolas pulled her up, though, her ankle was grabbed by one of the Orcs. Legolas cried out as the Orc yanked his sister away from him, and Saphire screamed as pain flowered in her ankle.

"Run, Legolas!" Saphire screamed as the Orcs carried her away. "Get Adar!" {Father}

"I can't leave you! We'll lose you!"

"Run!"

And Legolas ran. He ran for all he was worth. He got his father. Thranduil quickly called some warriors to him and they quickly dispatched into the forest to search for their young princess. Legolas, however, was told to stay at home as punishment for going so far out into the woods. He waited anxiously for his father to return with Saphire. But it didn't happen. Thranduil and the warriors came back empty-handed and down-hearted. Thranduil had to catch his son as the boy fell to the floor, sobbing. Thranduil felt his own tears escape his eyes as he held his child. He may never see his daughter again.

Several thousand years later...

Legolas ran through the forest with his patrol. The spiders were becoming overwhelming and many of Mirkwood's warriors were tirelessly running about the forest to rid it of the giant arachnids.

Right now, Legolas and his patrol were nearing southern Mirkwood where the spiders and other evil things were heaviest. They killed everything in their path that was a threat to their home. When they were well on their way to the ancient fortress of Dol Guldur, one of the scouts spotted a group of Orcs running through the trees.

Legolas watched the creatures with fierce hatred. After what they had done, Legolas had trained. Not trained like the other warriors. No. Trained. Ate. Napped. He vowed to kill every Orc that stood in his path. He felt anger boil in his stomach and a heat raise at the back of his throat. It was as if he were going to breathe fire, or throw up. The latter was more likely.

"Leave none alive," was the Prince's quiet order.

The group ambushed the Orcs and slew each one. Legolas tore to shreds each Orc he fought. He killed several, though even his own companions might call it murder. The fight ended soon enough and the warriors worried for their captain. He had changed after the disappearance of his sister. His heart had become encased in stone. Legolas stood near the edge of the battle area and looked over all the Orc-bodies. Everyone could see the grim satisfaction in his eyes, and the sick glee in seeing his enemies defeated so. Yes, he worried them.

Suddenly, another scout came running up to Legolas and asked the Prince to follow him. Legolas followed after the Elf without question, and so did a few other warriors for safety's sake. They ran silently on the branches of the trees until they came to where the scout was taking them. The younger Elf pointed below them. There was a girl - an Elf - below them wandering around the forest as if she had lost her way. She had long blonde hair that fell to her knees and seemed to be only about a head shorter than Legolas.

 Legolas dropped down in front of her with his bow loaded and aimed at her heart. He could not risk being friendly in case she was an Orc spy. But the girl only gasped and stared at Legolas. Legolas stared into her eyes for a moment, and the stone around his heart melted away. Legolas' bow and arrow slipped out of his fingers as if his hands were made of jelly. His eyes became soft and filled with hope. He stared and the girl and she stared back. Both Elves had tears in their eyes and hope filled their hearts.

"S-Saphire?" Legolas croaked.

"Legolas!" Saphire cried, launching herself at her older brother.

Legolas caught his little sister in his arms and they sank to the ground, clutching one another. Tears streamed down Legolas' face as he sobbed in relief and joy. Saphire was also sobbing; sobbing at the relief of finally finding her family and gaining freedom from the Orcs. They finally separated. Saphire wiped tears from her brother's face and he kissed hers away. The other warriors dropped from the trees and beamed at seeing their lost Princess, and at seeing their Prince happy again.

Legolas and his patrol headed back to Mirkwood early bringing Princess Saphire with them. When they finally arrived at the palace, Legolas took her straight to the throne room.

Thranduil's head snapped up as his son burst into the room. He was shocked at the bright smile that lit up the boy's face. Thranduil hadn't seen that smile since Legolas was a child. Then the King took notice of the girl that had also entered the throne room. He was preparing to ask who she was, but then she made eye contact with him and the words dissolved on his tongue. He recognized her. He knew her face. It caused is heart to swell and his eyes to water. The she-Elf smiled and new tears formed in her eyes.

"Vedui' Adar," Saphire called to him. {Greetings Father}

Thranduil stood and hurried to his child. Saphire wrapped her arms around his neck and he held her around her abdomen. Legolas smiled as he watched them. While Legolas had become hard and angry when his sister was taken, Thranduil had become soft and sad. Tears fell freely from Thranduil's eyes as he  held his daughter. As his tears fell, so did his sad personality and he became more of his old self than he had been in years. He pulled back and looked at the young woman standing in front of him. He smiled at her.

"I have missed you, sell-nin," Thranduil sighed, wiping tears from his face. {My daughter}

"And I you, Adar," Saphire agreed. {Father}

They hugged again, pulling Legolas into the hug with them.  As they pulled away, Thranduil quickly turned  to some servants.

"Hurry!" Thranduil said. "There is to be a celebration tonight in honor of the return of Princess Saphire!"

The servant nodded and ran off to begin preparations for the celebration.

Several days later...

Thranduil  ran through the forest with his family. He carried a picnic basket and his children each carried a blanket. They ran over tree limbs to make their way to a hidden clearing. Once there they set out the blankets and unpacked the picnic basket. They ate their lunch and spent they rest of the day exploring the surrounding area until dark when they returned to the clearing and slept under the stars, utilizing the blankets again for their intended purpose. They all cuddled together and Legolas held his sister, vowing that he would not let her go again.

~Thank you
