Q&A
Sophie: Do you have a favorite stuffed animal and what's its name?
Sophie's mouth formed a small "o". "Um...I wasn't really expecting that. I did have a penguin...her name is Mabel?" She shrugged uncomfortably. "Ok, sorry if this is weird."
Audrey: Would you rather go to the spa and get a manicure with bright pink nail polish OR go to a tea party where every tea cup you broke you have to sit there for an extra thirty minutes?
Audrey's mouth fell open. "I...I just..." Her eyes narrowed in anger. "ARE YOU EVIL OR SOMETHIN?" She looked around desperately. "Do I have to choose? Seriously?"
Deynan cackled. "Oh, this is beautiful."
Audrey kicked him with a glare. "It's not even your question, stupid."
"Then answer it," he shot back, rubbing his leg in pain.
Audrey slumped in her seat. "I guess I'd choose the tea party...then I'm not obligated to do anything. And, for your information, I totally wouldn't break a SINGLE teacup." She waved her gloved hands in the air.
Isaac: will you go out with me?
Isaac blinked. "Um...sure...but maybe we should meet first..."
"Nope," Ravi said shaking his head. "You don't have time for girlfriends...or boyfriends. I don't know your life. We got stuff to do. His answer is no."
Isaac laughed. "Well, ok then."
Abigail: You don't have parents. How did you get your name?
Abigail started. "Oh my goodness, a question for me! That's exciting!" Her eyes glittered. "Great question, too. When you're young and first admitted to the guild, you're given a first name by the instructors. Then, when you're twelve, you get to pick your own last name. It's a pretty exciting ceremony. Some sorcerers get their names from orphanages, because they don't make it to a guild until later in life."
Sierra: On all of your travels, who was the weirdest person/community you've ever met?
"Genevieve," she said instantly. "The diviner. She was bizarre. But Ore and the golems are pretty cool, too. Granted, I've never met the rest of the golems, but...still."
Sophie: Has anyone accidentally mistaken you for someone else? Specifically, has anyone called you Tessa?
Sophie blinked. "Um...no?" She looked around the circle desperately. "How is no one else getting questions like this?" Then her eyes widened. "Wait..." She looked ahead of her suspiciously. "Ok, so this one time, I was at the zoo, and this girl called me Tessa, but yeah, it was an accident. She had long brown hair, was kinda short, super pretty..." She narrowed her eyes. "Ok, I haven't thought about that in years. That's so weird that you would ask that."
Deynan: How do you manage to uphold your sarcasm or your attitude when the mood is down?
Deynan shrugged. "It's easier than plugging yourself into, I don't know, the pits of despair. When everything around you seems to be going wrong, if you keep your chin up and carry on like usual, then you're beating the things trying to drag you down. I'm not saying be positive, necessarily, but if you keep your identity, if you stay who you are, that's a battle won." He sat forward. "You know, there's this quote that my brother used to say: all the water in the world can't sink a boat if it doesn't let any water in. So I try not to let anything get to me. And sarcasm and attitude help me stay who I am." He grinned.
Ravi stared at him. "That was a surprisingly mature answer."
Deynan raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, don't get used to it, Ravioli."
Sophie: Do you watch YouTube on your book?
Sophie smiled slightly and blushed. "Yeah, actually. I didn't realize how awesome it was until I was on it. I watch a lot of Dan and Phil, Superwoman, you know, the big names. But yeah, I spend too much time on there when I should probably be sleeping." Her brow furrowed. "But honestly. What is it with me and these questions?"
All: Chocolate or vanilla?
Deynan rubbed his hands. "Ah, the ultimate personality question. Chocolate, of course."
Sophie raised an eyebrow. "Vanilla."
Deynan's eyes narrowed. "Yuck."
Ravi laughed. "I'm also going to have to go with vanilla."
Deynan looked around suspiciously. "What is this madness..."
"I'm with Deynan, chocolate all the way," Isaac said, laughing.
"As much as I hate to agree with Deynan, yeah, chocolate," Audrey grumbled. Deynan grinned.
Sierra nervously twisted her hair. "Do I have to pick? I mean, I'm more of a strawberry person myself. But if I had to choose...ah, I'm not sure I usually get both!" She looked up, distressed.
"You have to pick," Deynan insisted.
"Lay off," Audrey said, kicking him again. "Sierra, you're fine."
All: Do any of you play any instruments?
Isaac half raised a hand. "Piano and guitar."
"I WANT to play guitar," Deynan said.
Ravi turned to him, annoyed. "Please tell me it's not for the sole purpose of using a Soldano guitar amp."
Deynan grinned.
Deynan: Have you ever tangled up a slinky? If so, were you able to untangle it?
Deynan frowned. "Who is asking these questions..."
"I know, right?" Sophie muttered under her breath.
"Just answer," Audrey said sitting forwards with a wicked grin. "I want to know."
Deynan slumped in his chair. "If you really want to know, yes, I have tangled a stupid slinky. Multiple, actually. And no. I can't untangle those things for the life of me." He glared at Audrey. "Happy?"
She cackled. "Very."
Sophie snorted. "That's hilarious."
Deynan glared at her. "Since when are you so judgmental?"
"Since I found something to laugh at," she said lightly.
The room when silent.
"Buuuuurn," Isaac whispered.
Squad: What is your most embarrassing moment, please make me feel better about my life...please XD
Audrey raised her hand. "The oldest boy in the orphanage locked me in the closet for three hours, and when I finally escaped, he literally caught me by the back of my shirt, picked me up, and hung me on a tree outside the window for another hour."
Sierra stared at her. "Whoa. Intense."
Sophie shrugged delicately. "Um, one time I tried to check out a book from the library that was...not for children. And I was six." She blushed. "The librarian had to explain to me why she wouldn't allow me to read it."
"I was in this play in third grade," Sierra said, "and this kid forgot his cue, so I said his line for him. And then everyone was staring at me, and I thought it was because they were offended I covered for him, but it was a whole minute of silence on stage before I realized I had the next line." She sighed, closing her eyes. "That was truly horrible."
"That's not even bad," Ravi muttered.
"I once asked a woman on the bus if she knew what gender her baby was yet," Deynan said. "But she was just fat."
"Oh, ouch," Sophie whispered.
Deynan glared at her. "Oh, shut up."
"This one time, a woman thought I was being kidnapped by my dad because he's Hispanic," Isaac said, leaning back in his chair. "She made a big scene out of it too. We had to explain to everyone at the park that I was adopted. It was probably more awkward for my dad than me, but...."
Ravi winced. "That's tough, man."
Isaac nodded. "Ah, well. She had my best interests at heart, I guess."
Ravi shifted uncomfortably. "Literally, every day of my life was embarrassing...oh, wait, I got it. I was at a new elementary school and I went to the wrong classroom and the teacher spent all day looking through emails and paper messages trying to figure out where all my transfer information was while my actual teacher was trying to figure out where the crap I was, and it was this huge mess."
"That would happen to you," Deynan mused.
Ravi looked at him weirdly. "Yeah. It did."
All: Among you, who has the most annoying sibling?
Ravi stood up with one hand raised in a swift motion. "Me. Definitely me."
Sierra raised an eyebrow. "Whoever you have in mind, Wyatt could give them a run for their money." She laughed.
"No, you don't understand," Ravi said seriously. "Shreya and Aasha are out to KILL me. Shreya always pretends like she knows so much more than me and is better in every way and then AASHA, ok she shoved a pie in my face once. A REAL PIE!"
Audrey clutched her stomach laughing. "I love your sisters already."
Ravi's eyes widened. "If you guys ever met..."
Audrey: What was going through your mind when you found out who your parents were?
Audrey let out a long breath. "Oh. Right. Um, okay, it was kind of weird because I had always thought of Mrs. Simone as a sort of...motherly figure, I guess? And then to figure out she was actually my mom...it was sort of a mix between 'this is so weird' and 'this is a dream come true', you know? But I hadn't allowed myself to dream in such a long time...I didn't know what to feel."
Deynan: this isn't a question, but I think your brother would be really proud of you.
Deynan blinked. "Oh. Thanks. That, uh...that means a lot." He looked away, blinking rapidly.
Isaac: Celebrity crush. Who is it?
Isaac frowned. "Um, I don't really spend all that much time on celebrities...But I guess I'll say Rowan Blanchard because I really like the messages she promotes." He looked a little weirded out. "Um, are you the same person who asked me out?"
Audrey: Who are you most proud of punching in your life and why?
"Deynan," she replied immediately. "Every day. Because he deserves it. Every time."
Sierra: What's your favorite song?
Sierra bit her lip. "Oh, that's a tough one. I'd have to say Catch My Breath by Kelly Clarkson or Try Everything by Shakira. You know, the song from Zootopia?"
All: IMPORTANT: DO ANY OF YOU KNOW WHAT HAMILTON IS?
Ravi blinked. "Alexander Hamilton? The founding father?"
Sierra say up straighter. "The ten dollar founding father without a father, got a lot farther by working a lot harder, by being a lot smarter, by being a self-starter, by fourteen, they placed him in charge of a trading charter..."
She stopped when she realized everyone was staring at her.
"Oh, come on," she said, exasperated. "Has NO ONE heard this?!"
Isaac half raised his hand. "I've heard of it, I just haven't listened to it yet."
"What the crap is going on?" Audrey muttered.
Sierra looked around the circle seriously. "I will make you all Hamilton trash, mark my words."
Squad: Who is your favorite avenger, I know, I know, asking the real questions now.
"This is a very important question," Deynan said immediately. "And hulk. Definitely."
"Black widow," Audrey said with a grin. "She kicks butt."
Ravi shrugged. "I'm not sure why, but I really like Iron Man."
"It's 'cause you're a nerd," Deynan whispered.
Ravi glared at him. "Just a reminder that Bruce Banner is a scientist."
Deynan paused. "Eh. Details."
"I like Captain America," Sierra said, cutting in.
"Scarlet Witch," Sophie said quietly.
Isaac looked at the ceiling, thinking. "You know...I'm going to have to go with Thor."
To anyone willing to answer: Are there any ships that are openly shipped?
"RaviandSierra," Deynan coughed. He coughed again. "Oh, wow guys, I think I have something caught in my throat."
Isaac grinned and gave him a subtle fist bump.
Ravi glared at him. "Deynan Soldano, I swear, if you said what I think you said..."
"What do you think he said?" Sierra asked, confused.
Deynan sat up, hands clasped. "You know, I think we should move on to the next question."
Squad: Who knows the most memes?
Audrey wrinkled her nose. "What are memes?"
Everyone fell silent and stared at her.
"What?" she demanded. "I've never heard the word before."
"I don't even know how to begin to describe this to you," Deynan said slowly.
"It's an Internet thing," Sierra said to Audrey by way of explanation.
"Oh," Audrey said in realization. "We didn't have internet access at the orphanage."
Deynan paled.
"To answer the question, probably me," Ravi said, shoving his hands in his pockets with a chagrined look on his face. "These guys actually have lives."
Paint_splatt: Could you ever see any arguing among the group of friends that could potentially cause later problems? I know that they're very tight but is it possible?
Unfortunately...yes. There is a rather large divide in opinion between them that I could see being a problem...might cause an argument of sorts...I won't tell you what it is though. So, sorry. But yes. :-(
But I promise everything will work out in the end.
Paint_splatt: How did you choose Ravi's name?
FUN STORY when I was first planning out Legends (actually in the middle of writing Myths) I knew that I wanted the main character to be Indian. I could picture him so perfectly. Then I thought "Ravi. This kid looks like a Ravi." AND I ACTUALLY WASN'T SURE IF RAVI WAS AN ACTUAL INDIAN NAME OR NOT. So I looked it up, and it was. B-)
Paint_splatt: How are you such a good writer?
*blushes* aw thanks you're so sweet. I'm where I am today (whether that's good or not) because I took--and continue to take--advice from a truly incredible author. She said, "if you want to be a writer, write. Write everything you can. Keep a diary, create a blog, write short stories, write poetry, write anything and everything you can." So yeah! I keep a diary, and I write stories on here, and I do DDOH, and I've written some short stories on a different profile (@water_colored)
Paint_splatt: HOW DO YOU WRITE LIKE YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME LIKE YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME LIKE YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME
NON-STOP! Ok, Hamilton fangirl moment over. Heh. I like writing. I would rather be writing than doing anything else at any given moment.
Paint_splatt: How did you piece together your villains and their stories?
You know, they kind of pieced themselves together. The original Giselle was VERY different from who she is now. But the more I wrote the story, I realized that there was something more to her than I had originally anticipated. The entire flashback of Giselle's past was completely on the spur of the moment. And everything just fell into place after that. Future villains will be even more exciting so get hype.
Paint_splatt: As an author, how do you relate to you characters?
It's not as hard as a lot of people might think. I'm an actress, and one of the first rules of acting is find yourself in the character. Sierra is probably the most like me in that we value the happiness of others over the happiness of ourselves. Ravi has a very similar thought process to me when solving problems. Also, I've been the new kid before, so I know all about awkwardness. Audrey is everything I want to say but never have the guts to. Sophie is my shy side, as I do tend to clam up around people, especially strangers. Isaac is like me in the way that I can't turn people away who want my help. Deynan is probably the least like me, but I have a lot of fun writing him. We're both very protective of the people we care about. But they all have their own lives and feelings. It's funny. They kind of live in my head and say things without me needing to do anything. I simply write it down.
Thank you so much to everyone who asked questions, especially ReadingobsessedSteph bellabehrend and nightshade_wizard !!! This was super fun! Expect Monsters sometime soon :-)
Much Love
~Paint_splatt
