The Snarts and the Pettigrews

Purplefanperson Surprise! 🤭

Our conversation on my message board had this little idea popping in my head so... here we are! Hehe, oh, this'll be fun... Okay, here we go!

The Snarts and the Pettigrews

Time traveling is very hard. My sister, Matilda, and I learned that lesson the hard way. And by that I mean we had landed ourselves in a whole ass other dimension.

I won't tell you where or when we were trying to go (we'll save that story for another time), but I will tell you that we did not mean to end up inside Comic Book Land.

It started out just fine (not like using a Time-Turner was all that difficult, you just turn the hour glass a few times), but something was wrong (obviously otherwise we wouldn't have been in this mess). We'd tried to go back too far or fate or whatever didn't like what we were trying to do (Time-Turner's were forbidden, technically). Or it could have been that the Time-Turner we were currently using had been invented by a dark wizard. Just a guess but that could have had something to do with it.

Anyway, the Time-Turner got super hot while we were mid-time travel; the chain broke. There was a bright, blue flash, and then... I don't know. The next time I opened my eyes I was sitting in a place my brain could only associate with Star Wars (which is a generic reference, but an accurate one).

It was a metal room with steal walls, iron flooring. Glass windows. Bulk head doors. To the side it looked like someone had set up a science lab of some kind, which might have been impressive under different circumstances. My sister and I were laying flat on our backs on a raised platform at the center of the room. I stood up; and when I tried to step off the platform something pushed me back. An invisible force field of some kind. Not magic, though. Scientific.

"What?" I kicked Matilda who was still snoozing on the floor. "Tilly, get up. Look at this!" She mumbled something about beauty sleep, rolled over, and ignored me. I rolled my eyes. My sister had the tendency to be useless in dire situations.

The bulk head door slid open and two kids around my age, sixteen, walked in. I supposed they were twins as well, because they looked... well identical, except for the fact that they were obviously different genders. A boy and girl, like Tilly and me. Both blonde, both with icy blue eyes. They reminded me of the Malfoys, but their attire was closer to the head master of our school ─ Dumbledore. Their clothes were just as flamboyant as his was, only instead of robes they wore muggle clothes.

The girl was wearing a silver shirt bedazzled in gold with sparkly jeans and boots I was sure Tilly would be going mad over if she could have been bothered to wake up. Meanwhile, the boy looked like a rainbow that had been transfigured into a person. Literally. He was covered head to toe in yellows, blues, reds, etc. He even had a tie dye rainbow hat on and other matching accessories.

"Enjoy the nap?" the girl asked me. She had a slight smirk on her face. Her accent was different from mine. American. Not english.

"Refreshing, thanks," I said.

"You're welcome."

"What's with the Millennium Falcon?" I glanced around the room again. It looked like the only way out was through that door the two of them had entered from. And besides the other set of twins, there was also a force field blocking my way and my sister was sleeping on like nothing was happening. Brilliant. I loved being trapped don't you?

"She's called the Waverider," the girl said.

"She's our time ship," the boy added.

I ignored the fact that they both refered to the ship as 'she,' not even in the way weird people do with their cars, either. It sounded as if they were insinuating the ship was alive. I decided to focus on something else. "Time ship? As in... time travel?" Huh. What were the odds of meeting other time travelers on a time traveling adventure? Well, obviously better than I had thought, right?

"Nah, it's a giant alarm clock!" The girl scoffed like I'd said something dumb. "Yes, as in time travel. But I bet you already knew that, didn't you, Time Pirate?"

I stared at her. "Sorry?"

"Come on, man! The jig is up! We got you! We know you're the Time Pirates who have been messing with history!"

"How did you know about that?" My hand automatically went to the broken Time-Turner in my pocket. Was this, like, wizard police for people who tried to change the time line?

"Because we are very smart," the boy said. "And also because we have Gideon. Who did most of the work.... okay, she did all the work."

"Gideon..?" I looked around again, but we were the only ones in the room.

"You know..." The girl rolled her hands, like that would give me an idea. When it didn't she let out a heavy sigh and rolled her eyes again. "The ship's AI. Time Pirate ships have them too."

"Tilly and I don't have a ship," I said. "We have a Time-Turner."

"Um, aren't those from that really old nerd book Ethan likes to read?" the boy frowned, though I had no idea who Ethan was. I suppose he was talking to his sister. "You know, the one written by that transphobe?"

"Ugh," the girl scowled. "Harry Potter. Hate those books."

"Books? Oh, Harry's not gonna like that..." My sister had awoken. Finally.

Tilly looked around, not even blinking an eye at the fact that we were in an unknown location. Then again, strange things like this tended to happen to us all the time as of late. Comes with the territory of associating yourself with The Chosen One.

"Say..." Tilly mumbled, still looking half asleep. Her eyes were on the other girl's shoes. "Nice boots. Where'd you get 'em?"

"Oh these old things..." The girl grinned and shifted her feet around as if just noticing her shoes for the first time. "Gideon custom made them for me in our fabrication room. Had 'em forever. Hey, you're pretty hot by the way."

"I am quite attractive, yes. Thank you for noticing," Tilly said, flipping her hair over her shoulder. Then, she looked the other girl up and down. "Actually, you're rather cute as well."

"You have a girlfriend, Tilly," I reminded her.

"I'm taken, Maggie, not blind."

"I'm actually off the market too," the girl said. "Doesn't mean we can't notice a hottie when we see one."

"Laurel, stop flirting with the prisoner!" the boy scolded. Then, he made a face as if just realising something. "Wait. Did she just insinuate Harry Potter was a real person?"

Tilly frowned. "You taking the mickey? Of course, Harry Potter is a real person! Where have you been?"

"In a galaxy far, far away, apparently," I said, glancing around the room again. It was really weird...

No one laughed at my joke, though. But that was fine. It was just dawning on everyone that there was some sort of misconception going on.

"You guys haven't been screwing up the War of 1812?" the girl, Laurel, I suppose, frowned. "Or kidnapping Louis IV?"

"Uh, no? Why would we?" I asked.

There was a pause. The boy leaned over to the girl and whispered, "I'm starting to think these are not the time pirates we're looking for..."

"And we'll just assume you're not Death Eaters or Ministry officials, then?" Tilly asked. She looked even more confused than I was. Which was usual for her. She hardly ever payed attention to anything.

"No. Those would be fictional organizations..." the girl, Laurel, said. "At least... in our world, anyway."

"Ah, ha!" I jumped. "So, you are aliens!"

"Uh...no. We're human, sorry. Although we do know some aliens...Aunt Kara for instance..."

She went over to the computer (which by the way looked much more advanced than the clunky ones of the 90s) and pushed a button on the keyboard. At our confused looks she gestured for us to step off the platform. I was a little hesitant after, you know, running into an invisible wall before, so I let Tilly go first. She didn't hit anything, so I assumed it was safe. Thankfully, I was able to step through and on to the iron floor this time.

"I think you two must have just jumped worlds ─ from your earth to ours." From the way she said it, you would have thought people "jumped worlds" every Tuesday.

Tilly chuckled slightly, but she didn't sound amused. She sounded worried. "Um, I'm no master at geology ─"

"I'm not entirely sure if you're using that word right," I said.

"─ But I'm pretty sure there is only one earth. I mean, I know Hogwarts doesn't have a science class ─"

"Astronomy. Which is the word you were looking for earlier, probably."

"─ But even wizards and witches know how many planets there are."

"Well, now, that depends. Are we still counting Pluto in...uh... what year is it exactly..?"

The other two twins were smirking at us in amusement. "I like them," the boy said. "Can we keep them?"

"Sadly, that would be kidnapping," Laurel said. "Which we only do if we are kidnapping a time pirate. We're from 2035, by the way."

"Awe man," I complained. "We were trying to go backwards, not forwards!"

Laurel shrugged. "But right now, we're in a temporal vortex  ─ a sorta time limbo. So, not really in any year or anything at the moment. Just existing outside of time and space and whatever. Perfectly normal stuff. Regular Tuesday for the Legend Kids."

"Legend Kids...?"

"Egotistical," Tilly said. "But catchy."

"Nah. We just stole the gig from our parents."

"Straight up started the apocalypse with some string cheese."

"Oh, but we stopped it though, don't worry."

"Sometimes we screw things up. Okay, we screw things up a lot. More often than not. Pretty much all the time. But sometimes we screw things up for the better." The boy said this like it was some kind of catch phrase; then he made a face. "Shit. Have we said my name yet? I don't think we have. I'm Kaleb. That's my sis Laurel. But you know that already. I said her name. So, yeah. I'm Kaleb. Hi. Also, sorry for kidnapping you and mistaking you for time criminals."

These kids were even more chaotic then the Weasleys en masse...

"I'm Magnus," I said. "She's Tilly."

"Only he really calls me that, though," Tilly said, because this was a fact I usually forgot. "Most people stick with Mati. with an I and a T. Because I'm special."

"Well... it's a pleasure to meet you Mati with an I and a T." Laurel winked at my sister. Tilly blew a kiss back at her; Laurel caught it and dramatically held it to her heart. I got the feeling these two would be unbearable with one another.

"So...going back to the world jumping thing..." I said before they could get too far out of hand.

"Oh yeah. Kaleb, do you want to explain?" Laurel asked her brother. "You're better at it."

"Yeah. Um, do you know where Uncle Ray keeps the white board?" Kaleb asked.

"Think it's over there." She pointed to a closet on the other side of the room. Kaleb went over. It took all of three seconds before we heard clattering and banging, as if a whole shelf had fallen on top of the kid. I winced. Laurel snorted, showing off some real sisterly love. "You good, fam?"

"I'm okay!" Kaleb called back. "Just be breaking my ankles up in here. It's fine!"

Yeah. They were definitely Americans with that god awful lingo of theirs.

Kaleb came back into the room, rolling a wheeled white board (well not really a white board because it was made with glass instead but whatever) with him. He kept tripping over the wheels every few seconds and then start complaining about scuffing his shoes on them.

When he'd finally settled in front of my sister and I, he drew a few circles on the board with a marker. "Okay. So. Here's what's up. There are multiple earths, okay? Multiple possibilities and outcomes of stuff that happens. All co-existing with some scientific mojo or whatever. Side by side or something. This one here, Earth One, that's our Earth ─"

"How come you lot get to be Earth One?" I asked. "Maybe we wanted to be Earth One."

"Too bad," Kaleb said. "We already called it."

"Oh."

"Yeah."

"Alright, then."

"So, Earth One is where Laurel and I are from. We have the Waverider, and the Flash, and the Green Arrow, ect., etc. Earth Two is similar but with a lot of things flipped flopped. I think our Uncle Cisco and Aunt Caitlin were villains over there at some point. Over here, Earth Thirty-Eight, that's where Supergirl and friends live. And you two must be somewhere over here in one of these undiscovered Earths. Where Harry Potter is real people instead of a horribly written book series written by a horrible bigot, the way it is here. So. Any questions?"

I had loads of questions, actually, but my main two were 'Are you mad?' and 'how did I get stuck with these nutters?'

"I can understand there being a multiverse," I said. "I mean, if there's magic...sure. Why not? But if you're telling me I'm going to run into the Avengers on the street I'm going to need some more proof."

"The Flash and Green Arrow are DC, bro," Tilly said. "Avengers is Marvel."

"I like Marvel better," I shrugged.

"We could get Uncle Barry to come for a visit or something maybe," Kaleb said. "But first... we sorta have to find those time pirates we mentioned earlier..."

"Wanna help?" Laurel asked.

"You're going to trust us just like that?" I asked. "We only just met." I wouldn't say it out loud, but I wasn't sure if Tilly and I could trust these kids either. They did, after all, trap us in a force field. I mean, I know they let us out the second they realised we weren't whoever it was they were looking for... but still!

Laurel shrugged. She was holding herself in that same nonchalant manner a lot of the Gryffindors tended to have, as if she were thinking I'm super tough and I know it! She looked tough, too. Small and skinny, but her arms had a lot of muscle so I was willing to bet she could easily punch me out if she wanted.

"We have more cool toys and stuff than you do. Pretty sure we have the upper hand," she said.

"Fair point. How do we know we can trust you, then?"

"Our sisters flirted. That means their bonded for life," Kaleb said. If I had to guess, he would have been a Hufflepuff if he'd been a wizard from our world.

"Ooh," Tilly grinned. "I just love being bonded to pretty girls." Laurel made a finger gun at her.

"Sorry to interrupt commander ─"

I jumped. Maybe said a few foul words. Maybe not. But I wasn't exactly expecting a random disembodied voice to start talking through the walls, alright?!

Laurel and Kaleb were sniggering at each other. "We did say we had an AI didn't we?"

"Alright, smart asses," I complained. "Maybe warn a person before unexpectedly showing up?"

"My apologizes," the robotic voice spoke through the walls again. It didn't sound very apologetic though. "But I assure you it is an urgent matter concerning the runaway time pirates."

"Whatcha got, Gideon?" Laurel asked.

Something appeared on the computer screen from across the room: a busy city which I could only guess to be New York from the various American films I'd seen. It was a video. People were gathered in a crowd on the streets, rambling and screaming and pointing at the sky. That was where the real madness was happening. Soaring in through the air, weaving through the skyscrapers and punching through the thick smog of pollution, was a winged dinosaur with a Mongolian man riding on its back.

"Genghis Khan has been misplaced in time at 2021 Manhatten, New York. And it seems as if he's found himself a new pet: a pterodactyl named Steve. And in case you're wondering... yes. Dr. Palmer did in fact name the pterodactyl during his time in the cretaceous period."

"Why Steve, though?" Kaleb asked, frowning at the dinosaur. "Looks more like a Frankie to me."

"I was thinking more along the lines of a Timothy, actually," I shrugged.

"Is it always like this?" Tilly asked.

"Pretty much every other Tuesday 'round here," Laurel said.  "So, wiz kids. Wadda ya say? Wanna become honorary Legend Kids?"

She turned to us with a wicked grin on her face, like she was offering us something grand. And maybe pretty chaotic. Probably chaotic. Alright, it was chaotic. The look reminded me a little too much of the Weasley Twins right before they pranked someone. I wasn't sure how to feel about it.

I looked at Tilly to see what she was thinking, but she was grinning too. Brilliant. So, that settled it, I suppose. "Alright. We're in."

"Oh yay! New friends!" Kaleb cheered. "So sorry again for, you know, kidnapping you. We really thought you were time pirates. But we can get you home right after this. You wouldn't believe how often this kind of thing happens...It's almost a weekly event. Weird, right?"

"Eh." I still wasn't sure if we could trust these kids. We'd only just met them, after all. Then again, I had grown up on the streets and that tended to make people a bit skeptical. Tilly was always telling me I should be less up tight. Maybe this was a start. I suppose, these two didn't seem that bad, anyway. A bit loud and obnoxious. But they mostly seemed like normal, every day kids... who happened to own a time traveling space ship.

"Who doesn't love a crossover?"

He grinned. "Good point. Anyway, I'll go get our masks."

"Masks? Why do we need ─" But he was already gone, leaving through the same bulk head door he'd entered from. I looked at Matilda. She shrugged.

Laurel didn't provide any clarity either. Instead, she gave another one of those wicked smirks of hers. "C'mon. Let's go meet the rest of the team."
