The Diamond City
Victory slowed made her way down the path, Serena bobbing up and down in the saddle. The soft clopping of the horse's hooves was the only sound made as the small battalion trudged down the dirt road. Serena sighed and began to tap her fingers her left leg. Boredom was not a thing she was used to. Whenever she traveled, she usually was in a carriage, with plenty of books to read, and her company was more talkative, not stiff soldiers. Every time Serena tried to start a conversation with one of them, they ignored her and marched on.
As the day wore on, Serena fell into a sort of daze. With her head resting against Victory's neck, her lids felt heavy with sleep. She closed her eyes and fell into unconsciousness
Serena trudged through a thick jungle, pushing her way past emerald green leaves and thick, hanging vines. She swatted numerous bugs away from her face. Before long, she came to a large tree, the biggest she had ever seen. she stepped onto one of its roots, which was wider than her and walked towards the trunk. It loomed hundreds of feet above her and was so thick, a dozen men couldn't wrap their arms around it.
Serena walked around the base of the tree and came across a large hole, showing the layer beneath the bark. What she found odd was not that it formed what looked like a doorway, but when she tapped on the inside layer, a deep ringing sound met her ears. It was as if the tree was hollow. She leaned closer and pushed on the inside layer. It swung open, almost making Serena fall onto the long flight of stairs that led up the tree. As Serena placed a foot on the first step, the dream changed.
Serena stood in a stone tunnel, which led in stretched hundreds of meters in one direction, and made a sharp right in another. Torches hung on the walls in iron brackets every fifty feet. She picked up a the torch closest to her and headed down the long stretch and deeper into the tunnel. As she walked, blue gems began to pop up on the walls. The farther she got the more there were visible. She turned left and gazed in awe at the walls, which looked like they were made of the blue gem. At the end on the tunnel, a large stone doorway shone in the blue light that was reflecting from the sapphires. Or at least, that's what Serena thought they were. She approached the door, and placed her left hand on it.
The dream changed.
Serena gazed around. This time, she stood in the middle of a large city. Buildings made out of sandstone formed streets, which were made out of sandstone as well. Serena wondered why she would dream of such a place. She turned and walked up a street. She turned left, then right, then left again. Soon, she stood before a wall eighty feet tall. An archway cut into the wall, with two steel gates, open wide. Serena strode through them and into a courtyard. A large pool sat in the center, four palms standing at its corners. She walked to its edge and peered into the water. It was crystal clear and unmoving. A red glow caught her eye. It sat in the middle of the pool, glimmering in the sun. She knelt down to get a closer look.
"Serena."
Serena's eyes flew open. She sat up and looked around. Her tutor, Thomas, looked her in the eye. He was a slim man, with an air of command around him. Serena rubbed her eyes and asked, "What is it?"
Thomas smiled and pointed towards the horizon."We're here."
Serena looked in the direction he was pointing. On the crest on the hill stood a city, with walls that glimmered in the setting sun. "The Diamond city," she murmured, gazing in awe at the city. They had finally arrived.
