Chapter 3 The Hospital is The Safest Place For Me
Crockett stepped outside into the hallway to talk with Ms. Goodwin, and Detective Jay Halstead, but making sure he was facing Ronnies room, so if she woke up and needed him, he was right there.
"So how did you determine that I was the intended target?" Crockett asked. Jay handed him a picture.
"This was taken by the camera right outside Mollys." Jay said. Crockett looked at the picture of a man, in a silver SUV with the gun out the window. He sighed heavily.
"Dammit. That's Eric Sullivan. Last night I performed a surgery on his son with 2.0. Tragically the system malfunctioned, and it led to his son Jason, dying on the table. His parents didn't want to go the surgical route, but I was overconfident in 2.0's abilities and I pushed for the surgery." Crockett said.
"Well, as of right now, we are still trying to find him. We need to treat this as if you are still a target, because we don't know if hes going to make another attempt on your life. So we will have police outside of your home until we do find him." Jay said.
"That isn't really necessary." Crockett said.
"It absolutely is!" Ms. Goodwin said.
"As long as Ronnie is here, I'll be here, and He would be kind of crazy to show up here when he knows people are looking for him." Crockett said. "Ronnie will be here for a few more days at least, I'm sure he will be found by then."
"Speaking of, do you think she is available for a statement?" Jay asked.
"I'm sure she will be when she wakes up." Crockett said. "Shouldn't be too long."
"Okay, I can wait." Jay nodded. "Just let me know when she wakes up."
"We will. Thank you, Detective." Ms. Goodwin smiled. Jay turned and walked away and Ms. Goodwin turned to Crockett who looked completely defeated.
"What happened to Jason was not your fault. You know that right?" Ms. Goodwin asked.
"I just don't see how that can be, his parents were so against the surgery, but I pushed for it. Jack Dayton waved his shiny new toy in my face, and I should have waited to make sure the flaws were worked out before I ever attempted that surgery." Crockett said. "And now, Ronnie is hurt, hell she almost died, and that would have been just as much my fault." Crockett said and ran his hands over his face.
"I know you are trying to help me by taking the blame off, but I just can't shake it." Crockett sighed.
A sudden scream stole Crockett's attention away from Ms. Goodwin. He looked towards Ronnie's room and noticed she was sitting straight up, looking around the room like she was confused, and terrified. Crockett hurried into the room followed by Ms. Goodwin. At this point Ronnie had ripped the IV out of her arm and was trying to get out of bed.
"Whoa! Ronnie calm down." Crockett said and held her shoulders trying to stop her from getting out of bed.
Ronnie looked up at Crockett, with tears streaming down her face.
"Crockett?" She asked.
"I'm right here darlin, you are safe. Do you know where you are?"
"The hospital.." Ronnie mumbled and then looked at her arm where the IV was The blood was running down her arm from where she ripped it out.
"Oh Shit!" She panicked. Ronnie was never one to be squeamish, She could watch slashers, with blood and guts galore, but when it came to her own blood being anywhere but inside her body where it was supposed to be she was definitely not a fan.
"Hey, eyes on me." Crockett said. Ronnie looked back up at him.
"I don't know what happened." Ronnie said.
"I think you had another bad dream and when you woke up, you were confused and scared. But it's okay, nothing we can't fix." Crockett said and smiled.
Ronnie felt someone touch her arm and she jerked her arm away and looked at the woman who had touched her arm.
"I apologize Miss Boudreaux, my name is Sharon Goodwin I was just putting some gauze on your arm to stop the bleeding."
Ronnie sighed. "I should be the one to apologize. I'm not usually this jumpy."
"Given the circumstances of why you are here, anyone would understand why you might be jumpy." Ms. Goodwin smiled. "I'd like to place a new IV if that is okay with you?"
Ronnie turned her head back to Crockett.
"It's okay. Ms. Goodwin here runs the place, but before that she was a nurse and I don't think you'll find anyone else in here more qualified to place a simple IV." Crockett smiled.
Ronnie nodded. "Okay." She said.
"Now I know you don't like needles, so just keep your eyes on me." Crockett said.
"Don't like is putting it very lightly." Ronnie chuckled a bit but she kept her eyes locked onto Crockett's while Ms. Goodwin placed the new IV.
"All done." Ms. Goodwin said as she took her gloves off and disposed of them in the trash.
Ronnie looked at her arm where the new IV was placed.
"I didn't feel a thing. How did you do that so fast?" Ronnie asked.
"Years of experience working with people who don't like needles." Ms. Goodwin smiled.
"Alright, lets get you back into bed. I need to check your stitches to make sure you didn't tear any while trying to get out of bed." Crockett said.
"Sure thing Dr. Marcel." Ronnie winked
"Miss Boudreaux, we have a detective here, that would like to speak with you If you are up for it, I can send him in."
"Please, just call me Ronnie, and yeah that is fine." Ronnie nodded.
"I will send him in. You just try to relax. I know its hard to do when you are in a hospital but you are safe here." Ms. Goodwin smiled.
"Thank you." Ronnie said and smiled and laid back in bed. Ms. Goodwin walked out, and Dr. Rhodes walked in.
"Good afternoon." Dr. Rhodes smiled.
"You best be careful with a smile like that, Any girl would throw herself down a flight of stairs on the daily just to see that smile Dr. Rhodes." Ronnie smirked.
Dr. Rhodes chuckled.
"Its good to see you in good spirits. Good news, A room opened up downstairs so we will be moving you out of the ICU by this evening."
"That is great news. Any idea on how long my stay will be?" Ronnie asked as Crockett laid the blanket over her waist and moved her gown up to look at her stitches.
Ronnie looked down for the first time seeing the scars on her abdomen.
"Are you having any pain?" Dr. Rhodes asked and frowned.
"Oh, no. I woke up confused earlier and ripped my IV out and tried to get out of bed. Crock is just checking to make sure I didn't rip my stitches. Good news is, I finally have a cool scar story that beats Davey's rattlesnake bite."
Dr. Rhodes stepped in, helping Crockett examine the stitches.
"All looks good, What do you think, Crock?" Dr. Rhodes smirked.
"I don't see any reason for concern." Crockett said and smiled to himself.
"Great." Dr. Rhodes said. "Well, I am optimistic, you've done very well so far. We are going to give you about a week to really heal up, and then we will start Physical therapy making sure you are good to go. Id say you'll be out of here and back on your tour within two to three weeks if not sooner." Dr. Rhodes said.
"Excellent." Ronnie smiled. "Thank you, for everything."
"Of course." Dr. Rhodes said. "I will be back to check in with you soon."
"Looking forward to it." Ronnie smirked as Dr. Rhodes left.
"Easy with that southern belle charm. He's engaged." Crockett chuckled.
"Well whoever that dreamboat got engaged to is a very lucky lady." Ronnie said and turned back to Crockett. "Not to worry, He's got nothing on you Cowboy." Ronnie said with a little grin.
Ms. Goodwin returned with Detective Jay Halstead, and as if he knew that his sister was going to be questioned by police without him, Remy showed up right as they were walking into the room.
"Whats going on?" Remy asked.
"Mr. Boudreaux, this is Detective Jay Halstead, he is working on your sisters case." Ms. Goodwin said.
Remy extended his hand. "Remington Boudreaux." He said as Jay shook his hand. "I'm Veronica's lawyer, and manager. I'm hoping you have news on who did this to my sister."
"I do, I just need to ask her a couple of questions before I get to that." Jay said.
"Sure." Remy nodded and sat down in the chair next to Ronnie's bed
"I will leave you to it." Ms. Goodwin smiled and left the room. .
"So if you know who did it, why do you need to ask me questions?" Ronnie asked.
"Its just a formality really, I just need to get a statement from you as a the victim and a possible witness to the crime." Jay said.
"Okay." Ronnie nodded.
"Alright, so just walk me through what you remember about last night." Jay said.
"Its honestly kind of foggy." Ronnie said.
"Which is completely normal, given that Miss Boudreaux had lost consciousness several times between the scene, and the hospital, also with the anesthesia from the surgery and the amount of pain medication she is currently on a spotty memory is common." Crockett said.
"I understand, just do your best." Jay said.
"I remember Crockett and I were going to leave the bar and go to his place. I remember stepping outside and I remember a loud popping sound." Ronnie said and closed her eyes trying to remember what exactly had happened.
"It felt like I got punched in the stomach so hard I fell back against the wall. There were people screaming, and running all over the place. I remember looking for Crockett, but I couldn't see him. The very last thing I remember before being brought to the hospital was a silver SUV. I can still hear the tires screeching as it sped away from the bar."
"I was on the phone with her as she was leaving. I heard the shots. I heard her crying out in pain between all the screaming before the call disconnected." Remy said with tears in his eyes.
"Oh Rem." Ronnie sighed and held his hand.
"So I need you to tell me who is responsible for this. Was it a fan? We've had some trouble with one guy. He constantly messages her on her Youtube account and her instagram. Her phone is always getting blown up with notifications from this creep."
"I can assure you, that your sister was not the intended target for this shooting." Jay said.
"Well then who was?" Remy asked.
"It was me." Crockett said.
"What?!" Ronnie exclaimed. "Who would want to hurt you?"
"Yesterday I had a patient, a teenage boy, 16 years old. He had a tumor in his stomach, I was confident I could remove it surgically using our new AI assisted surgical system. Like any surgery there were risks, and his parents were not sure they wanted to go the surgical route but I convinced them it was his best option. The AI malfunctioned in the middle of the surgery, and I lost him on the table. The man who shot you, was his father." Crockett said. "I'm really sorry Ronnie. This is my fault."
"It isn't your fault Crockett." Ronnie said. "You did what you thought was best for that kid. How could you have known the system would malfunction like that?" She asked and then turned back to Jay.
"Did you catch the guy?" She asked.
"Not yet, he is on the run, but we are working on it." Jay said.
Remy scoffed.
"You're working on it? This guy almost killed my sister and he is still out there and the best you can say is you are working on it?" Remy said.
"Remy calm down." Crockett said.
"Calm down? You are telling me to calm down? My sister was shot by some lunatic that was coming after YOU. You don't get to tell me to calm down." Remy said and stood up.
"Rem, come on." Ronnie said. "Is there anything else you need from me Detective?" Ronnie asked.
"I just need to know if you would like to press additional charges." Jay said.
"Of course she does!" Remy exclaimed.
"I need to hear it from her." Jay said.
Remy turned to Ronnie expectantly.
"I don't know." Ronnie said and sighed. She put her hand on her ear and started rubbing her earlobe which Crockett knew was an anxiety tick of hers.
"You've got to be kidding me Veronica!" Remy said.
"Hey man..she doesn't have to decide right now. Just let her be." Crockett said.
"Dr. Marcel is right. She doesn't have to decide now." Jay said.
"Everything that has happened is because I just let her be. I knew she shouldn't have gone on this tour alone and I knew when she said she was going to be in Chicago that you would end up dragging her into something!" Remy accused.
"Is that honestly how you think of me Rem?" Crockett asked. "That I would purposely put your sister in harms way?"
"Well have you seen where we are right now?" Remy asked.
"Let me get one thing crystal clear to you. Had I known what was going to happen I would have put myself in front of that bullet in a heartbeat!" Crockett said and stood up which Remy took as a challenge. He got into Crocketts face.
"Rem I highly recommend you step out before you make a mistake." Crockett said.
"Are you threatening me Crockett?" Remy asked and grabbed ahold of Crocketts shirt.
"Hey, lets settle down guys." Jay said and tried to get in between them
Remy let go of Crocketts shirt and shoved him backwards.
Ronnie was about to rip her own ear off with anxiety. There was just too much going on at the moment. Too much information to process all at once.
"Remington! Enough!" Ronnie snapped. "I want everyone besides Crockett out!"
"If you think-" Remy started but was cut off.
"Fous le camp!" Ronnie shouted.
"Ronnie, Calm down and think about this for a minute!" Remy said
"Ne me dis surtout pas de me calmer après ce que tu viens de faire Je veux que tu partes, là, tout de suite!" Ronnie all but screamed.
Remy put his hands up and walked out of the room. Jay just kind of stood there, unsure of what to say at that moment.
"I apologize for all of that Detective." Ronnie said. "If you could please just give me and Crockett a moment?"
"Sure. I don't know what you said to him, but I would not want to be on the receiving end of that conversation." Jay said and chuckled. "I'll go make sure he calms down."
"Thank you Detective." Ronnie smiled and Jay left the room.
Ronnie sighed and tried to calm herself down.
"Le culot de lui.." Ronnie mumbled.
"Its alright, just calm down." Crockett said.
"Je suis calme!" Ronnie said.
"You're still speaking in french darlin. Which tells me you are anything but calm." Crockett chuckled and sat down on the bed next to her.
"I cant believe hes treating you like this, he is such a hot head!" Ronnie grumbled. "None of this is your fault. You know that right?" Ronnie asked.
Crockett looked down and sighed.
"Crock, it's not your fault. You couldn't have known any of this would happen. Don't let Rem get to you. I know you walk around carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders as is, you don't need his bullshit."
"What are you going to do? Are you going to press charges?" Crockett asked, diverting the subject.
"You've spent too much time with me. You are changing the subject without talking about the problem." Ronnie said. "However, you always respect me wanting to change the subject so I am going to do the same for you." Ronnie said and sighed. "To tell you the truth I don't know what I want to do yet. Thats why I wanted you to stay in the room. What do you think I should do?" Ronnie asked.
"The decision is yours to make Ronnie." Crockett said. "What are you feeling about it?"
"I know everyone wants me to press charges, but the thing of it is, is the police are going to charge him no matter what I decide to do. That family has been through enough I don't think me adding charges is going to help anyone." Ronnie sighed.
"You've never been one to do what everyone else expects you to do, and I don't suppose that this situation is going to change that. Its who you are Ronnie, on the outside you make yourself seem mean and scary, but on the inside you have a good heart, and I know that whatever you decide to do is going to come from that good heart." Crockett said and squeezed her hand.
"Thanks Crock." Ronnie said and smiled.
"Of course..you know thats one of the things that made me fall-" Crockett started, but he was cut off by his pager. He looked down at the pager.
"Hey, they need me in the ED there was a massive car accident, multiple people are in route here and they need some extra hands. Are you going to be okay?" Crockett asked.
"Of course, you have important things to do Dr. Marcel." Ronnie smiled. "Go save some lives."
"Thats the goal." Crockett smiled. "I will see you after I'm done okay?"
"Okay. Go forth into battle, and when you come back we can sing your victories over hospital food." Ronnie smirked.
"You are such a nerd." Crockett chuckled as he left the room.
When Crockett walked out of the room, Remy was in the hallway talking to Jay. Remy turned and looked at Crockett and approached him.
"I really don't have time for this Rem." Crockett said and tried to walk away.
"Did she tell you what she was going to do about pressing charges?" Remy asked. Crockett sighed and stopped.
"She told me she was still thinking about it, but given what the family has already been through she is leaning towards not pressing additional charges." Crockett said and again tried to walk away.
"Shes lost her damn mind. I thought you of all people would be able to talk some sense into her."
Crockett turned around again.
"When are you going to realize that your sister is a grown woman? She has her own thoughts, her own opinions and her own reasoning behind her choices." Crockett said. "And if you ask me, I think she is perfectly capable of deciding what to do in this matter considering she is the one who got shot."
"Or, maybe you talked her out of pressing charges because it would look better on you." Remy said. Remy suggested.
Crockett scoffed and shook his head.
"Look, I get it. You are still upset about what happened 10 years ago, but in the real world, everyone else has moved on except for you. Your sister needs you Rem. She needs people on her side right now and you coming here, and causing a riff between everyone is becoming a real pain in the ass. You can be mad about what happened 10 years ago, but the moment you start questioning my ethics, my job, we are going to have a problem. Now I have patients waiting for me and I have no more time for this. Get your shit together man and go be with your sister." Crockett said and then walked away.
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later that evening, Ronnie had been transferred to another room downstairs. She hadn't seen her brother since she kicked him out of her room in the ICU earlier, but for now, she was content just to be able to watch TV to take her mind off of everything. Ronnie hated hospitals, the chaos, the smell of sickness, the uncertainty of everything. It got much worse after her mother passed.
There was a knock on on the wall beside her room and then the curtain pulled back. She smiled expecting it to be Crockett, but instead it was someone who she hadn't seen yet.
"Hello, I'm Dr. Charles I was wondering if I could come in and chat with you?" He asked.
"I guess so." Ronnie shrugged and turned the TV off.
Dr. Charles walked over and sat down in a chair beside her. It was then that Ronnie was able to read his coat. Psychiatry.
"Who sent you?" Ronnie asked.
"Actually, it was Ms. Goodwin. She told me you were having some bad dreams about the shooting and you were confused when you woke up and tore your IV out trying to get out of bed." Dr. Charles said.
"I don't think that is grounds for a visit from the hospital trick cyclist." Ronnie mumbled.
"Trick cyclist. I can honestly say I don't think I've been referred to as that yet." Dr. Charles chuckled.
"People get bad dreams all the time. Doesn't make them crazy." Ronnie said.
"You are right. Though the dreams we can sometimes get after a traumatic event can cause us to feel not so much ourselves, or like you experienced confusion, and while that may be part of waking up out of a night little morphine nap I always like to check in on patients who have been through something traumatic like you've been through to see if they might want to talk about it." Dr. Charles said.
"I think I'm actually good. Thanks though." Ronnie said and turned the TV back on.
"Well, I can understand not wanting to talk about it to someone you don't know so I wont pry. Is there anything I can get you? Water? Some food?" Dr. Charles asked.
Ronnie thought for a moment and then turned back to him.
"You know what...I would actually kill for a cup of coffee. Just plain ol black coffee." Ronnie said.
"Alright, I will talk with Dr. Rhodes and see if you are clear to drink coffee, sometimes after surgery doctors don't recommend certain drinks or foods, but if he gives me the okay, I will be more than happy to bring you a cup of coffee. Do you have any family with you someone I can send in? I noticed you've been in here by yourself for a while."
"My brother is around here somewhere." Ronnie shrugged. "I kicked him out of my room earlier because he was being obnoxious."
Dr. Charles chuckled. "As brothers can be. Right, well I will go see about that coffee situation and I will be back shortly." Dr. Charles said.
"Thank you." Ronnie said as Dr. Charles was leaving.
Ronnie watched TV for a little while before the curtain to her room was pulled back. She looked over at Remy entering the room, with a balloon, flowers, and a few other things in his arms.
Ronnie raised her eyebrow at him.
"So I went to the gift shop." Remy said.
"I can see that." Ronnie said as Remy walked over and placed the flowers on the table beside the bed.
Ronnie looked up at the balloon
"Why does it say congratulations?" She asked and took a sip of her water.
"Well they were out of Get well soon, and didn't appear to have a Sorry you got shot and your brother is an asshole so Congratulations." Remy said waved his hands around.
Ronnie sprayed the water out of her mouth to avoid choking as she laughed.
"And I don't even want to tell you how long I dug in the stuffed animal bin for this." Remy said and held out an Alligator plush.
"Figured he would remind you of home."
"Thank you Rem." Ronnie said and took the alligator plush and hugged it to her chest.
Remy sat down.
"Look. I'm sorry about earlier. My behavior was uncalled for. And I somehow forget that you aren't that little girl with ribbons and pigtails who used to keep frogs and worms in her overall pockets. You're grown. And as an adult, I need to remember to respect your opinions and your thoughts. But Ron..when I heard those gun shots, and when I heard you crying in pain I was so scared that I was going to lose you and after Mama..I just can't lose you too." Remy said and wiped tears from his eyes.
"Its okay Rem, I've had some time to calm down and think about it. I know that the things you said were coming from a place of love and fear. But you know me. I've always been a fighter. I'm not planning on going anywhere anytime soon. As much as I look forward to running into mama's arms at Heaven's gates, It's not my time yet and not even being shot is going to keep me down. Well..it will for a few weeks until my stomach muscles don't feel like I did a thousand and four crunches." Ronnie said and winced a little as she adjusted herself.
"Easy Ronnie, don't do too much at once." Rem said.
"Ah I'm fine. I am starving though. I haven't been able to eat all day. Another Doctor was going to ask if I could have a cup of coffee, but I haven't seen him in a while."
"Its been a madhouse out there all afternoon. It was finally starting to slow down when I came in." Remy said.
The curtain pulled back a little and Dr. Rhodes poked his head in.
"Is now a good time to come in?" He asked.
"Yes." Ronnie replied and smiled.
Dr. Rhodes stepped into the room.
"I apologize for not checking in sooner. Its been pure insanity out there." Dr. Rhodes said.
"Its all good. I understand. Dr. Charles was looking for you to ask if I could have a cup of coffee."
"I've been in surgery for the last 4 hours. I'd rather you not have anything too rich or caffeinated for a couple of days, Your stomach muscles are very tender at this stage and we don't want to give you anything that could potentially upset your stomach." Dr. Rhodes explained.
"Okay that makes sense." Ronnie nodded. "What about food? I am starving."
"I'd like to start you off, eating light, You are more than welcome to have someone bring you food, or you can order something from our cafeteria. Nothing greasy, preferably no ruffage like salads, and definitely nothing spicy."
Ronnie put her hand over her heart.
"Oh Dr. Rhodes you are breaking my little cajun spiced heart." Ronnie said.
"Yeah good luck with this one, everything she eats is greasy or spicy." Remy chuckled.
Dr. Rhodes smiled. "It won't be too long, I promise. Just a few days." Dr. Rhodes pager went off.
"I'm sorry, I'm being called away again, is there anything you need?"
"Yeah. A cup of coffee, and a chicken fried steak." Ronnie smirked.
"Oh Shes got jokes too." Dr. Rhodes chuckled.
"Honestly, I wouldn't mind some more pain medication. Its starting to get a little uncomfortable. Maybe something less strong though." Ronnie said.
"Absolutely. I'll send a nurse in as soon as possible." Dr. Rhodes said. "I'll check on you again before I leave tonight."
"Okay, Thank you Dr. Rhodes." Ronnie smiled.
Dr. Rhodes left the room.
"I see you flirting with the doctor." Remy said.
"I can't help it. That man is fine. With a capital F I N E." Ronnie said. "A girl can appreciate."
Remy's phone started ringing he looked down at it.
"Its Dad." He said and answered it. "Hey Dad, yeah shes doing good. Starving though. I don't know what this poor girl is going to eat, she can't have anything greasy, rich, or spicy which are her three main food groups." Remy said. "Yeah, I'll swing by and pick you up, I forgot to grab Ronnies laptop anyways. We can go grab some food and have dinner with Ronnie before visiting hours are over. Alright. I'll be right there." Remy said and hung up. "Dad wants to come see you again. So I'm going to pick him up and go pick up food. Do you have any idea what you might want?" Remy asked.
"I wonder if theres a McCalisters here..A turkey sandwich would be good."
"Well We can look, and if not I'm sure there is some place that will have a turkey sandwich." Remy smiled.
"I love you. I'll be back in a bit." Remy said and kissed the top of her head. "Behave."
"I always behave." Ronnie smirked.
"Bullshit." Remy chuckled as he left.
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ronnie typed away on her laptop making a facebook post about what happened and that she was okay but would have to couple a couple tour dates while she recovered in Chicago.
"Ronnie for heavens sake, put that thing away and eat." Remy sighed. Ronnie picked up her sandwich and took a bite and kept typing.
"I can multitask." She said as she chewed.
"Very lady like to talk with your mouth full of food." Remy snorted.
Ronnie swallowed her food.
"I guess it's a good thing I'm not much of a lady." Ronnie smirked.
The curtain to the room was pulled back, and Crockett stepped in. Remy took note of how his sister's entire being seemed to light up when he walked in. He knew by the look in her eyes that she was in love, though she'd likely never admit it herself. He knew then there wasn't going to be anyone on the planet that was going to stop her from being with him.
"Crockett!" Ronnie beamed.
"Hey." Crockett smiled. "How are you doing?"
"I'm doing good. Dr. Rhodes got me something for pain that's not going to knock me on my ass. But sticking to this diet of his is going to kill me." Ronnie said.
Crockett chuckled. "It's only for a few days. If anything, only being able to drink water is a good thing especially for you."
"Amen." Remy said.
Ronnie glared at her brother.
"Of course, the first time you agree with Crockett on something today, it's that." She scoffed.
"Crockett, sit down, you look exhausted." Benoit said.
"Ah, I'm fine." Crockett smiled. "Nothing I can't handle."
"So..are they going to have police follow you home since they haven't caught the guy yet?" Ronnie asked.
"As long as you are here, I will be here and the hospital is the safest place for me to be." Crockett explained.
"Are you sure? Where are you going to sleep?" Benoit asked. "And don't tell me you're going to be sleeping in the chair like we found you this morning."
"The hospital provides on call rooms for us to rest in if need be. I can also have a cot brought in here so Ronnie doesn't have to be alone all night."
"That would be preferred." Ronnie said. "Hospitals creep me out."
Crockett smirked. "Then that is what I will do. I'm sure they will find him soon."
"Good." Ronnie nodded.
"Hey Crock, can I talk to you for a minute outside?" Remy asked.
"Sure." Crockett nodded. "I'll be back." Crockett told Ronnie.
"You two play nice." Ronnie said and smiled.
Crockett and Remy left the room as Dr. Rhodes was walking back in to check in with Ronnie before he went home.
Once Remy and Crockett were outside the curtain. Remy sighed.
"Look man, I'm sorry. I know I said a lot of things that were uncalled for, especially when it came to your job and your ethics. If you hadn't have been there at that Bar, I don't know if she would have survived the trip to the hospital. You saved her life Crock and I'm sorry I was too much of an ass to see that at first."
"I get it Rem. She's your sister. You've always been her greatest protector. But I do appreciate the apology."
"And about what happened 10 years ago...I should have known it was going to happen. Hell, half the town had a pool going on when you two would finally get together. Mama even participated." Remy chuckled. "Ronnie didn't have any boyfriends in high school because she was more focused on her music, and fixing up old beat down cars with my Uncle but Mama always told me, One day. Those two are going to get married and it will be the happiest day of my life.
Crockett smirked.
"Well, I don't expect wedding bells any time soon. Ronnie is still very much focused on her music career, and this statement will probably earn me a punch to the face, but your sister and I have been pretty content with the friends with benefits situation we have had going. It stopped obviously when I started my relationship with Claire, but there was always an understanding that, if Claire and I broke up, we would continue as we had been."
Remy shook his head.
"Except I don't think you are content with that. I know you love her man and I'm pretty confident she loves you too."
Crockett sighed.
"Is it that obvious?"
"Its all over your face every time you look at her Crock, it has been since you two were 16." Remy laughed.
"Still. I respect your sisters wishes to keep things low key. With her music career, and me being a doctor and working incredibly long hours it works." Crockett shrugged.
There was a sudden commotion in the ED, people were yelling.
"Hey Stop!" The security guard shouted, and then the sound of Gun fire ricocheted through the ED
"Get down!" Crockett said.
"Marcel!" A man with a drunken slur shouted.
"I thought you said this was the safest place for you!" Remy hissed.
"I thought it was.." Crockett said and then put his hands up as the man with the pistol Eric Sullivan rounded the corner and pointed it directly at him.
