BACKSTORY

Birth and Early Childhood

Marina was born November 15th, 1983 to Cynthia Ward. Cynthia was in the middle of her college classes when her water broke and barely made it to the hospital (it was a forty-minute drive from campus), where she gave birth to Marina in the lobby with the help of the receptionist. Cynthia's ex-boyfriend and Marina's father, Gerald Glenn, wasn't in the picture, so Cynthia raised her on her own. Cynthia graduated from college when Marina was four and became a second grade teacher at Charlotte Bronte Elementary Center. At the age of seven, Marina decided she wanted to be a teacher, just like her mom.

When Marina was 18, Cynthia had been in a relationship with their new neighbor (who was eight years younger than her), Geoff Avery. Cynthia soon found out that she was pregnant and the two moved in with Geoff. Although Cynthia and Geoff decided that they would wait to get married, Marina accepted Geoff as a father figure, even calling him Dad. On February 14th, during Geoff and Cynthia's Valentine's date, Cynthia went into labor and gave birth to Logan James, just one minute shy of midnight.

When Marina was 23 and Logan was 5, Cynthia and Geoff went out to a pub for date night. Unfortunately, someone at the bar had drunkenly slipped a pill into Geoff's drink, causing him to fall asleep on the drive home. It resulted in a car crash that instantly killed him and left Cynthia a quadriplegic. Before Marina had a chance to get to the hospital, Cynthia succumbed to her injuries. Marina was left with custody of Logan.

Meeting the Tenth Doctor

Marina was able to juggle raising Logan with the help of her best friend, Kristen, while working for her teaching degree (she took a gap year after her mother died). After graduating, she became a student teacher in the same second grade class that her mother taught, which Logan was a student in.

In November 2008, after Cynthia's replacement retired, a man who called himself John Smith was hired. While the two got along right away and Logan liked him, Marina couldn't help but be intrigued by him. On Election Day, she realized that she left her laptop in the classroom and went to the school with Kristen and Logan, only to find Mr. Smith there. The four were attacked by Clem the Janitor and Mr. Smith helped them escape to the multi-purpose room closet where they hid. Mr. Smith revealed that he really goes by "the Doctor" and that he was investigating the activity of an escaped alien convict, who is really Clem the Janitor. Clem finds them, ties them up, and begins raiding the safe where the principal kept the school's emergency funds so that he could finally be able to make it on his own on Earth. The Doctor and Marina were able to stop him and the Doctor took him to start a new life.

During the weekend, the Doctor came back, thanking Marina for her help. Logan ran into the TARDIS, with Marina and Kristen following closely. Marina asked if she could come with him and, after hesitating, the Doctor finally agreed when Logan asked if he could come with them.

PERSONALITY

Marina is an empathetic, intelligent, sweet, and maternal person. Although, as seen in a few instances, she can be very possessive and overprotective of her brother, in a way that she reminds the Doctor of his darker tendencies. One of her biggest flaws is that she can sometimes talk down to children instead of talking to them.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

At the beginning of the "Marina Ward Chronicles," she is 25 years old. She has long, wavy brown hair and striking grey eyes that, whenever she's angry, seems to see right through you.
