What Else Can Anakin Do?
While Carmine was away on the Gathering with Ahsoka and some younglings, Anakin continued to practice his chloropathy with Gabby at the Temple. But, he was beginning to get frustrated. Over the last two days, he kept getting certain plants mixed up, got the wrong colors, and the wrong size.
Yesterday morning, he made his roses blue and his violets red. In the afternoon, he grew a grapefruit tree instead of a jogan fruit tree. Earlier today, he made his daisies too tall and his sunflowers way too short. But, Gabby wasn't giving up on him.
"Your power exists for a reason, Daddy." Gabby told him. "I won't give up on you. If it takes until I'm as old as Boba, I'm going to help you master your magic."
Earlier that same day, Lamenta offered a bit of advice.
"My daddy says that to find what makes your power work, sometimes you just have to find your song. And sing it."
Gabby wasn't sure what that was supposed to mean. But she felt pretty sure there had to be something other than bursting into song and all the magical stuff coming true.
"Come on, Daddy." Gabby said. "You can do it. You're getting better."
Today, Gabby was teaching Anakin how to grow flowers in a particular pattern. Gabby knew how to grow trees so they stood in different poses, like a cherry tree with branches that formed the shape of a heart, and an apple tree that had enough spaces for people to sit on and eat apples.
Anakin tried growing roses again, and they formed in the shape of a circle.
"YES!" Anakin shouted. "Finally got something right the first time!"
Gabby clapped. "That was very good, Daddy. Now let's see you grow a tree. Any tree."
Anakin thought and decided to try growing an apple tree, but when he did, it grew peaches instead.
"Peaches!"
"Ugh! Wrong fruit!" Anakin said. "It was supposed to be an apple tree."
Gabby picked a peach from her father's tree and took a bite. It was sweet and juicy to perfection.
"They're delicious though." Gabby said, grabbing another peach and offering it to Anakin. "Want some?"
"No thanks." Anakin sighed. "I'm never gonna get the hang of this!"
"Don't say that, Daddy. You'll get it right."
"No, I won't." Anakin put his head in his hands. "I don't have green hands like you."
Gabby was confused. People had said she basically had green hands instead of a green thumb because out of all her powers, chloropathy was the one power she used that she never seemed to make a mistake with, other than her healing powers.
"Daddy, you don't need green hands." Gabby said.
Gabby had made her father do all sorts of things to help strengthen his power. Touching plants with his bare hands and standing barefoot in some grass to have direct contact with plants, reading and learning all about all kinds of plants, and increasing his intake on different fruits and vegetables so he had a feel of what edible plants were supposed to taste like. But still, Anakin found many errors in his power.
"What's the use? I'll never be as good as you."
"Is that what this is about?" Gabby said. "Daddy, you're talented on your own. We may have the same type of power, but it's unique for each of us."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I grow lots of different plants, but I specialize in a certain kind. Mainly roses, tulips, daisies, snap dragons, and fruit trees. Basically, plants of beauty and nurturing. Wysteria specializes in trees in general, and her mom grows plants that can heal the sick. You just haven't discovered what plant you specialize in yet."
"But I've looked at every single book on plants in the library, the ones Wysteria lent us, I even checked the holo-net and watched at least five different nature documentaries on plants." Anakin said. "Did you know that sap is mostly water?"
"No, I did not know that," said the five-year-old. "But, at least you have plenty of knowledge about plants. And for some seeds, you gotta dig deeper for them to really grow properly."
"This is just ridiculous." Anakin said, standing up. "Now I also know why I didn't get these powers earlier. All because I grew up on a desert planet with hardly any water, and practically no plants because of two blazing suns. All my life I've been a slave. First to slave owners, then to the old Code, and now to magic I can't even control."
"Daddy, your magic doesn't need to be like all other Enchanteds'. Remember what you told me when I started using the Force? You just gotta be you."
"I'd like that very much, but so far all I've done is follow your lessons and gotten almost nowhere!"
"Not nowhere, Daddy. You've made progress."
"I don't just wanna just make progress, I wanna help the Jedi and my family. I wanna know where I came from!"
Suddenly, a little cactus popped out of the ground in front of Anakin. A little cactus with a blue flower on it.
"That's all you gotta do, Daddy. Put in that energy of truth. Keep it real." Gabby said.
Anakin didn't say anything; he was too busy staring down at the little cactus he grew. He knelt down to the little cactus as he and Gabby began to feel a song coming on.
Anakin: I just made something unexpected
Anakin tapped the cactus, and it grew a little bigger with some more flowers. And he picked it up and held it dearly in his hands.
Something sharp, something new
It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
What else can I do?
Gabby: Keep it real, Keep it real
Good talk, keep it real, keep it real (Anakin: What else can I do?)
Let's walk, just be true, just be true
Come on, just be you, true to you
Gabby grew a few roses around them to demonstrate her own powers.
Gabby: I grow rows and rows of roses
Flor de mayo, by the mile
I make trees in pretty poses
So much hides within your magic
Anakin ran around the courtyard and grew a bunch of zinnias everywhere in colors blue, red, and purple and lots of green leaves
Anakin: What could I do if I just grew what I was feelin' in the moment?
(Gabby: Do you know what you're growing? Whoa!)
Gabby jumped to dodge a bush that nearly hit her
Anakin: What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they'd let me be?
Anakin grew a big vine and swung all around it, a bunch of jacaranda flowers flying everywhere
A hurricane of jacarandas
Then, a strangling fig tree grew, and so did some vines along certain walls and pillars of the Temple.
Anakin: Strangling figs (Gabby: big), hanging vines (Gabby: this is fine)
Palma de Cera fills the air as I climb
And I push through
What else can I do?
Anakin rose up on a palm tree he grew, and Gabby climbed up to him.
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Gabby yelped as some sundew almost bit her, and Anakin grabbed her.
Anakin: Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
Gabby: Come on and feel the shiver of something new
Anakin: I'm so sick of perfect, I want something true, don't you?
And you seem like your life's been a dream (Gabby: whoa)
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(Gabby: How far do those roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow (Gabby: whoa)
But it's awesome that you help me rise
Gabby and Anakin then held hands as they started to really have fun growing plants together.
Anakin & Gabby: How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
Let's go
The father and daughter found themselves on one of the roofs
A hurricane of jacarandas
Anakin: Strangling figs (Gabby: Go), hanging vines (Gabby: Grow)
Palma de Cera fills the air as I climb
And I push through
Gabby: What else, what else?
Anakin grew more flowers, and they spurted colorful pollen, which Anakin got hit with a little bit, and then Gabby did too. Then, they started messing around with the flowers and pollen, both of them getting messy and colorful as Anakin grew even more tropical and desert plants all around, them spreading all around the Temple. Anakin did a cartwheel as they traveled to another part of the Temple to grow some more plants
Some Jedi were walking down the hall when they saw lots of zinnias grow across the bottom lines of the walls.
Anakin: What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
(Gabby: Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
But I'll still be okay
Gabby: Hey, everybody clear the way. Woo!
Anakin and Gabby were singing, laughing, and dancing around, having fun with all the plants, and then Anakin grew some trumpet flower trees
Anakin: I'm comin' through with tabebuia (Gabby: comin' through with that boo-yeah)
Making waves (Gabby: making waves), changing minds (Gabby: you've changed mine)
Anakin: The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well
I owe this all to you
Anakin picked up and hugged his daughter. And grew even more zinnias and a strangling fig that formed itself like a slide.
Anakin: What else can I do?
(Gabby: Show 'em what you can do)
What else can I do?
(Gabby: There's nothing you can't do)
What else can I do?
The father and daughter slid down together, landing in a soft pile of zinnias, the two of them laughing as they had so much fun growing all those plants.
"You're the most fun teacher I've ever had." Anakin laughed, making a crown of zinnias appear around Gabby's head.
Gabby giggled.
"Look at all these plants you grew." Gabby said, motioning to all the plants. The Temple looked more alive than ever with all the added plants.
Gabby smiled and held her father's hand. "I knew you could do it." she said.
Anakin looked at himself and Gabby. They both looked like a couple of walking rainbows.
"We should probably wash off all this pollen." Anakin said, dusting off some blue and yellow pollen, only succeeding in making it green on his clothes.
"Yeah. We don't wanna make anyone sneeze when they come near us." Gabby giggled.
So, the Skywalkers went by the hall. Other Jedi seemed surprised by all the sudden growth of new plants, and some seemed to like the beautiful new flowers. Some of the kids even started to swing on the vines.
"Looks like everyone really likes the plants we grew together, Daddy." Gabby smiled.
Then they ran into Carmine and the younglings...
"So, we look like this thanks to a bunch of new flowers with a ton of pollen." Anakin said.
"Daddy finally is getting the hang of his powers." Gabby smiled, dusting off her father's cheek so she could kiss it.
"Wait, so Anakin grew all these?" Carmine said.
"Most of them. I mostly grew the roses, tulips, snapdragons, daisies and some extra vines." Gabby said.
"Well, I'd say, job well done, Bro." Carmine said, giving his twin a pat on the back, but also getting pollen on his hand. "And that's why I didn't hug you this time."
Anakin laughed. "Well, we'd better go get washed up."
"Or I could just-" Gabby began.
"Don't even think about raining on us." Anakin interrupted. Gabby didn't use her water magic. "I don't need magic to have parental authority." Anakin tapped his daughter's nose, making her sneeze as she accidentally breathed in a little pollen.
Everyone laughed.
