Sleeping Ani

After rescuing Force sensitive children, naturally everyone was tuckered out, including Hero with No Fear Anakin Skywalker, who though he didn't like to show it, actually did hold fears of his own. His biggest fear was losing the people he loved and being unable to save them the way he was unable to save his mother from dying at the hands of Tusken Raiders. When he married Padme and held their daughter Gabby for the very first time, he swore to always love and protect them no matter what.

After rescuing the holocron, Anakin feared the possibility of his daughter's name being on that list and Cad Bane, the bounty hunter who stole it, learning who Gabby's father was. So, he had her sleep with him in his room so he could keep her safe. Anakin dreaded losing either of his girls, but he knew Padme would want him to put their daughter first, so he did.

The next morning, Gabby was the first to wake up. She yawned and rubbed the sleepiness out from her eyes and sat up, stretching. She looked beside her to see her father still sleeping, and she kissed his cheek to wake him. But Anakin only responded with a snore.

"Hmm. He must be really tired." Gabby said to herself, then she climbed out of bed to get herself ready for the day.

After brushing her teeth and hair and getting dressed, Gabby went to check on Anakin, who was still asleep. So, she went to go have some breakfast with Carousella and Ahsoka.

"Where's Skyguy?" Ahsoka asked as she and Gabby were eating.

There was bacon at breakfast today, and Anakin never resisted bacon. He was usually the one to gobble it up. But strangely, there was a lot of bacon left.

"He's still sleeping," said Gabby. "On the bright side, at least we actually get bacon this time."

Carousella gagged at the bacon, being a vegetarian by nature and all.

"Don't worry, Carousella. I didn't forget you." Gabby said, growing a little bush with shiny red strawberries, Carousella's favorite.

Of course, Gabby set up a little plate of bacon for Anakin, knowing he'd be upset if he missed out on his favorite breakfast.

But, after finishing her food, Gabby noticed Anakin still wasn't present. She decided to go check on him again.

To Gabby's surprise, Anakin was still fast asleep. So, Gabby climbed up on the bed and shook him by the shoulder.

"Daddy, wake up. Breakfast is getting cold." Gabby said in a singsong voice her parents used when she didn't want to get out of bed.

But, Anakin just turned away, still sleeping.

"Daddy. Wake up!" Gabby said a little louder.

Then, Gabby resorted to something she usually did on Life Day morning.

"Wake up! Wake up!" Gabby shouted over and over as she jumped on the bed. Then she jumped up really high above him "Geronimo!"

And Gabby plopped right down onto Anakin. But he still didn't wake up. So, Gabby decided to resort to something noisier.

Gabby found as many things as she could and used them to make as much noise as possible. She banged some pots and pans she found in the kitchen, blasted loud music, and screamed 'WAKE UP' at the top of her lungs.

Carousella ran into the room, having heard all the racket.

"Gabby! What's going on in here?!" Carousella asked. She was wearing earmuffs over her ears. "Half the temple is making noise complaints!"

"Sorry, Carousella." Gabby said. "I just can't seem to wake Daddy up."

That was when Anakin's comm beeped. And since Anakin wouldn't wake up to answer it, Gabby did. It turned out the Council needed Anakin to report there for something important.

"I don't think Daddy can make it," said Gabby.

"What are you talking about?" Obi-Wan asked, sounding confused.

"Um... I think I need to show you."

So, Gabby started to pull Anakin out of bed, and he landed on the floor on his stomach. Thankfully, and surprisingly, he still didn't wake up.

Carousella grabbed the back of Anakin's shirt with her teeth and started to drag him out of the room before using her magic to put him on her back, and carry him to the Council Chamber. Naturally, the Council was surprised and a bit concerned to see Anakin hanging over Carousella's back like he was unconscious, and Carousella carefully placed him on the floor, Anakin still snoring, deep in sleep.

"How is it that he's heavier when he's sleeping?" Carousella groaned, stretching out her spine.

"I have no idea," said Gabby.

"You carried Anakin all the way here and didn't bother waking him?" Obi-Wan said, sounding baffled.

"We tried to, but Daddy just won't wake up no matter what we do. Look."

Gabby took out an alarm clock and pressed the button on top.

"Cover your ears!" Carousella said, getting down and covering her ears with her hooves.

Everyone covered their ears as the alarm clock ticked and then rang its alarm bells loudly enough to shake the whole room.

Anakin just started snoring again.

"See?" Gabby said. "He won't wake up."

Gabby then tried using her water magic to splash water in her father's face. That didn't work either.

"Let me try something," said Obi-Wan. "Carousella, may I borrow one of your feathers, please?"

Carousella held up a wing and let Obi-Wan pluck a feather, and the Jedi started tickling Anakin's nose, which made it itchy. And before they knew it, Anakin let out a big sneeze... but he was still sleeping.

"Maybe you need to try another tickle spot." Carousella said.

So, Carousella took the feather, and started tickling Anakin's stomach, which she and Gabby knew was his tickle spot. And sure enough, it did tickle Anakin, but he still wouldn't get up.

This looked like it was going to take a while, so Carousella got a hold of her father, who agreed to fill in for Anakin on the mission.

So, Gabby and Carousella were left on their own to figure out what was wrong. But after hours of trying again to wake Anakin from making noise to putting a piece of bacon under his nose, and they even tried playing Baby Shark again. Even that didn't wake him. Carousella licking him didn't work either.

"Well, we know he can't be so tired he can sleep through everything we just did." Gabby said, pacing in circles. "There's gotta be something we're missing."

Carousella thought, and she said, "Maybe the question is not why Anakin won't wake up, but why he's sleeping like this in the first place."

The two girls thought for a while. Then, Gabby remembered some of the stories her father read to her recently. She picked up two stories: Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, both stories with people under deep sleeps. The only thing is, Anakin didn't eat any apples before he went to sleep. And Gabby took off his glove to check his hand; no signs that he pricked his finger on a magical needle.

"Is there any way we can know for sure?" Gabby asked.

Carousella thought, and said. "Fantasia might know something. Let's go to Equinaro and ask her."

So, Gabby created a fluffy cloud carriage like the one she made when she and Carousella rescued Master Ropal, and Carousella ran as fast as she could so they could apparate to Equinaro.

Luckily, Carousella still had authorization to enter Equinaro castle. And she looked for her friend Fantasia Saddleheart, future queen of Equinaro. She found her in the library with her little sisters Dream Heart and baby Forsythia.

"Carousella!" Fantasia exclaimed, and she and Carousella nuzzled and playfully frolicked in circles, as many young equines did to play o greet one another. "And I see you brought Gabby and... Anakin sleeping?"

Fantasia was confused and surprised.

"That's why we came," said Gabby. She explained to Fantasia that they believed Anakin was under a deep sleep, and since Fantasia specialized in unlocking true beauty, maybe she could unlock the cause of Anakin's sleep.

"I see. I'll need to concentrate really hard on this." Fantasia said. "Keep his head still so I can scan him for magic."

Gabby firmly but gently kept her father's head in place, and Fantasia carefully touched her horn to Anakin's forehead, and ran a magical scan on him.

After a while, Fantasia confirmed that Anakin was under an enchanted sleep. Now the question was who or what put him under it.

"Gabby, did anything odd happen before your dad was under this deep sleep?" Fantasia asked.

"Hmm..." Gabby thought really hard. Nothing odd seemed to happen after the children were rescued, or when they got back to the Temple. To be fair, though, Gabby had fallen asleep herself when they got to the Temple. But then, Gabby remembered the real last time she'd seen her father awake.

Flashback to about two in the morning...

Anakin woke up with a gasp, having had a bad dream. He breathed heavily, and his daughter woke up too.

"Daddy? What's wrong?" Gabby asked with a yawn.

"Oh, Gabby." Anakin said. "I'm sorry. Did I wake you?"

"Yes."

"It was just a bad dream," sighed Anakin. "Go back to sleep."

Gabby started to go back to sleep, but Anakin sounded like he was having trouble getting back to sleep. So, Gabby put her teddy bear by his side and started to sing a lullaby Padme sang to her whenever she had a bad dream.

Sun goes down, and we are here together

Fireflies glow like a thousand charms

Stay with me and you can dream forever

Right here in my arms tonight.

It seemed to settle Anakin down, so Gabby kept singing.'

Sounds of day fade away

Stars begin to climb

Melodies fill the breeze

Sweeter all the time.

Sun goes down, and we are here together

Fireflies glow like a thousand charms

Stay with me and you can dream forever

Right here in my arms tonight.

And, Anakin was sleeping peacefully, and soon Gabby was too.

"Wait a spell," said Carousella, sounding absolutely perplexed. "Let me get this straight. Anakin's under a deep sleep because of a lullaby?"

"If Gabby got a new power," said Fantasia. "Do you remember how to summon the Learning Libro?"

"Sure do." Gabby said. And she put her hands together and opened them like a book, summoning her Learning Libro.

Gabby asked the book to show her her newest ability. The book floated and flipped its pages until it stopped on a chapter with music notes. Since Gabby couldn't read the words herself, Carousella and Fantasia did.

According to it, Gabby gained a form of magic known to Enchantra as Siren Song, which was basically the ability to manipulate various things through music. In Enchantra, there were many kinds of sirens with different powers. A majority of them charmed people by singing, but they all specialized in different things. Some could charm people into doing whatever they were told, some could charm people to settle emotions, and some could lull people to sleep with the sweetest lullaby they could ever hear.

"Some of my musical magic must've transferred to Gabby when we combined our magic and made her own music magic stronger," Carousella theorized.

"It's a possibility," said Fantasia. "And now, she needs to learn how to control it so she doesn't accidentally create a deep sleep every time she sings a lullaby."

In this case, it turned out Gabby accidentally lulled Anakin into a sirenial sleep, and the only way to wake someone up from that kind of sleep was to sing a wake up song.

"But I don't know any wake up songs," said Gabby.

"It doesn't have to be a song that was already written." Fantasia said. "You can just make something up. Sing the first wake up lyrics that come to your head. All you have to do is make your intentions clear both on the outside, and from in here."

Carousella gently put a hoof over Gabby's heart to encourage her.

So, Gabby decided to think really hard, and she thought of a song she heard while learning about seasons. And she sung it to Anakin.

For such a long time

You've been sound asleep

The buds on the trees

The bulbs in the ground so deep

I look at the sun

And there's only one thing I can say

It's time to wake up

Time to wake up

And greet a brand-new day

Anakin started to stir a little bit.

"He's starting to wake up! Carousella exclaimed.

"Keep singing, Gabby." Fantasia said.

The winter was cold

The nights were so long

Now the birds have returned

And they're singing a springtime song

Just feel the glow

And see how the snow has gone away

It's time to wake up

Time to wake up

And greet a brand-new day

Anakin started to wake up more, and Gabby started singing louder and happier as flowers started to grow and butterflies fluttered all around.

The wisteria grows as the rainwater flows

To the deep blue sea

Just look up in the sky

You'll see butterflies flying so merrily

It's as beautiful as it can be

So wake up and enjoy it with me

The moles in their holes

The bees in their hive

It's days just like this

That make me glad I'm alive

There's one thing to do

Come look at the blue sky that once was gray

It's time to wake up

It's time to wake up

And greet a brand-new day

Gabby and the ponies looked at Anakin to see how he would react. Nothing else seemed to have happened at first, but then, Gabby knelt down, and she kissed Anakin's cheek.

Anakin stirred. His eyes fluttered opened, and he let out a big yawn.

"Hmm? What happened?" Anakin yawned again.

"Yay! Daddy's awake!" Gabby cheered, tackling Anakin in a hug and giving him lots of kisses.

Anakin looked around. "Where are we? And why am I on a cloud?"

"That's kind of a long, funny story, Daddy." Gabby said.

"Let's just say, your princess has found her voice in a magical way." Fantasia said.

(That little song Gabby sang is called "Time to Wake Up" from a show I watched when I was little called Johnny and the Sprites. It was a big part of my childhood, and I thought that particular song would fit here pretty well.)
