Skywalkers Exposed Part 2: Babysitters

It took a little while for the Jedi Council to settle down after what happened with Anakin. Unaware that Gabby escaped, they gathered in the Chambers again to discuss a new matter.

"With Skywalker out, Gabriella needs a new guardian." Mace said.

"Hmm, a tricky decision, this will be." Master Yoda said.

If there was one thing the Jedi Council knew about Gabby, it was that she was a very unpredictable child. She was always disappearing, popping out of nowhere, hiding, running around, pouncing on everyone, jumping, and basically being a little ball of energy on a sugar high without even eating sugar. She was basically Tigger in a little girl's body.

Looking after her was no easy task, and Anakin was the only Jedi with enough experience to handle her, and she was known to scare off a lot of nannies and babysitters with her hyperactivity. So, it was no surprise that there were not a lot of Jedi knocking down the door to be her babysitter.

"If granted permission, I would be willing to look after her," said Obi-Wan.

The Council thought Obi-Wan was crazy at first, but Obi-Wan pointed out that Gabby had seen most of the Council members fighting her father, and she looked horrified when they did. Anyone who knew how to handle children properly knew that traumatized children needed to be handled very carefully, or their emotional state could worsen and lead to serious problems later in life. And anyone knew that whenever Gabby's emotions got out of control, her powers went haywire.

"Certain, are you, Obi-Wan? An adorable little girl, she is. But predict her behavior, you cannot. Tricky even for me, she is." Yoda said. He hadn't gotten to babysit Gabby much, but the one time he did, he looked away for a moment and Gabby bedazzled his robe and tied pink bows around his cane.

"I am certain, Master Yoda. I've raised her father for ten years and have previous experience caring for her. As well as meeting some of the crazier parts of her powers."

"But you, similar to Anakin, have formed somewhat of an attachment to the girl," Master Windu pointed out.

"True. However, Master Kenobi is one of the most qualified to handle younglings out of most members of the Council," said Master Mundi. "And he does have more experience with the princess than most of us."

"Obi-Wan, this is Anakin's daughter we're talking about. Unpredictable, dangerous, and rebellious like her father." Mace said. "Therefore, I believe I should take watch of her."

"With all due respect, Master Windu, Gabby is barely three years old, she has been traumatized, and needs someone she can trust." Master Plo intervened, taking the bear from Mace's hands. "And given your most recent doing with her, your presence alone would only aggravate the girl. And this bear may serve as a security holder, given her emotional state."

Mace sighed, "Very well. Padawan Tano. You'll be under Master Kenobi's watch as his new Padawan and assist him in watching over Princess Gabriella. Go retrieve her so we may notify her of the new arrangement. Hopefully by now, she's calmed down."

"Yes, Master Windu." Ahsoka nodded.

Ahsoka went to where she was told Gabby's room was and unlocked the door.

"Gabby?" Ahsoka looked around and saw a lump in the blankets on Gabby's bed. "Gabby, the Council wants to see you." There was no response. So, Ahsoka sat on the bed to talk to Gabby.

"I get it. You're upset about your father. I'm upset about Anakin too. I haven't known him that long, but he was really growing on me." Ahsoka said. "I never knew my father. Master Plo comes close, but still. I think you're very lucky to have had such a loving father like Anakin who played with you and took care of you. If he were here now, I'm pretty sure he'd just want you to be safe and cared for, so that's what we plan to do. We don't know everything Anakin did, but maybe you could teach us, if that would make you feel better."

There was still no response.

"Come on, Gabby. Don't be sad. It'll be okay. Let's hug it out?" Ahsoka asked as she pulled the blanket down, only to find that the lump underneath wasn't Gabby, but a couple of pillows. And that was when she noticed the window was open, and she saw clouds leading all the way to the ground, some of them disappearing. She didn't need the Force to know what happened.

"Gabby's gone!" Ahsoka exclaimed when she returned to the Council Chamber.

"What do you mean 'gone'?" Obi-Wan asked.

"I went to her room to get her, but the room was empty, her window was open, and there were a bunch of clouds outside the window that only she could've made."

That immediately got the Jedi concerned. Gabby was just a little girl; she didn't know the city as well as they did, especially not at night. The sun was already going down, and there was no telling where Gabby was now.

"Lost, the little one may be." Yoda said. "Find her quickly, we must."

"She can't have gone far," said Obi-Wan. "We should split up to cover more ground."

So, the Council decided to gather small brigades of clones each led by various Council members and send out search parties to split up across the city and find the princess. They all gathered some critical supplies too. First aid kits, blankets, and some water and rations.

Meanwhile, Gabby was trying to find her way home to her apartment or to the Senate building; she figured if she could at least find her mother, or a senator who knew how to contact her parents, they would be home free. But, she had no idea where she was now, and she didn't even have her teddy bear to keep her company.

Gabby found a clear space where traffic didn't pass through and touched the ground until she grew a strong tree, which she found a branch to jump onto. She figured if she got a higher view of the city, she could find her way home.

Gabby looked around until she saw just what she was looking for: her apartment building. She was sure Padme had to be home already. So, she decided to head in that direction.

"Even if Mommy isn't home yet, one of the neighbors will be able to call her and tell her where I am." Gabby told herself, and she climbed across the branches onto the top of a shorter building. Making more clouds strong enough for her to walk on so she wouldn't lose sight of her home.

But as Gabby headed on her way, a lot of thought ran through her head. Why didn't the Council even ask her if she wanted to stay in the Order? Weren't they supposed to wait until she turned fourteen and let her make the decision of which world she wanted to stay in? Now, Gabby wasn't sure if she even wanted to make that decision. She felt trapped between worlds at that point. Being forced into one world and away from the other, it confused her a lot. Now she wasn't sure who she was supposed to be.

Gabby stopped and looked at her reflection in a window. The next thing she knew, she couldn't explain why, but somehow, spending enough time around Carousella, for the first time, she felt like bursting into a little song.

Look at me,

I will never pass for a perfect child, or a perfect Jedi

Can it be,

I'm not meant to play this part?

Gabby looked into another window of a store on the ground below, and she could see two separate visions between her. One of her parents, Carousella, and her friends, and the other of her friends and family at the Jedi Temple. She thought of how she was torn between deciding which world she would rather stay in despite all that just happened.

Now I see, that if I were to choose just either world

I would break my family's heart.

Gabby's visions disappeared, and she looked into her reflection again in more windows.

Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me?

Why is my reflection someone I don't know?

Somehow I cannot hide

Who I am, though I've tried.

Gabby looked down into a puddle she came across and looked deeper into her reflection. She wasn't sure who she saw. Was that a young Jedi or a young princess?

When will my reflection show, who I am, inside?

When will my reflection show, who I am, inside?

Gabby shut her eyes tightly as a tear fell from her eye and dropped into the puddle.

The little girl sniffed, then took a step into the puddle as she continued on her way to try and get home to her parents.

Obi-Wan and some clones wandered the streets downtown while Master Plo Koon, Ahsoka, and some more clones searched uptown, calling for Gabby. Everyone looked and looked for the princess for hours, but no luck. Obi-Wan contacted Ahsoka to see if she and Master Plo had any luck finding Gabby.

"We've searched every inch of our designated area. No sign of her." Ahsoka confirmed.

"Keep searching. We must find her before any Separatist or bounty hunter does." Obi-Wan said before hanging up and calling for Gabby again.

"Master Kenobi, look!" one clone exclaimed.

That was when Obi-Wan found the big sycamore tree Gabby had grown to find home. He knew for a fact that plants did not grow like that on a majority of Coruscant, and could only have been grown either by their friend Princess Wysteria, or Gabby. And since Wysteria was in Spirituo, Gabby was the only logical answer. Obi-Wan climbed the tree and found the trail of clouds Gabby left behind. He knew they wouldn't be strong enough to hold an adult, so he simply observed the atmosphere for Gabby's Force signature. And he used that to find out where she was headed.

Gabby was getting tired from her journey. She was almost home, but she needed to stop and rest. She was getting thirsty and starting to feel sleepy, and it was getting cooler outside too. Soon, she found some crates sitting somewhere and took a seat to rest for a few minutes. Gabby yawned as she felt tired from the long journey.

Suddenly, Gabby heard a familiar voice.

"Gabby! There you are!" Obi-Wan exclaimed with relief. "We were worried sick about you."

Gabby looked at him and got scared, knowing Obi-Wan would take her back to the Temple if he caught her, and then she might never get back to her parents. So, she quickly got up and started running down the street, Obi-Wan giving chase.

"Gabby, wait! Come back!" Obi-Wan exclaimed, only for Gabby to run faster, quickly passing through people.

"Excuse me! Princess in distress coming through!" Gabby shouted to get people to move.

"Gabby, please stop running!"

Obi-Wan then alerted the others on his communicator that he found Gabby, but she was on the run. So, Master Plo and Ahsoka, being the closest to where Gabby seemed to be headed, were going to help. The clones were ordered not to stun Gabby because she was little and could've been seriously harmed as well as more emotionally traumatized than she already was. So, they tried to just grab Gabby, but she either ran between their legs, ran around them, or jumped over, or ran under, around, or through something, and sometimes threw something into their path to slow them down.

"Slow down, Princess!" exclaimed a clone named Trap before tripping on one of Gabby's vines and falling down as it wrapped itself around him.

Gabby ran and ran as fast as she could through town, having no idea where she was going. She began to shiver as the air got colder, and her throat started to feel scratchy without any water, and the cold only added to the dry feeling.

Gabby stopped to catch her breath once she felt sure she'd lost Obi-Wan and the clones. However, she gasped when she saw Master Plo and Ahsoka.

"Gabby! You're okay!" Ahsoka exclaimed, only for Gabby to get scared and start running away again.

"Gabriella, come back here!" Master Plo shouted as he and Ahsoka pursued her.

Gabby ran faster and faster, getting more and more tired by the minute. But, she decided to start screaming for her parents, hoping one of them would happen to be nearby and come for her. The town began looking the same to her even more; it felt like she was running in circles. Eventually she turned and ran into another alley, only to find herself cornered with nowhere to run.

Gabby tried to use her magic to make an escape, but she was so tired and emotionally unstable that her powers wouldn't work because she couldn't concentrate on what to do or which power to use. And when she saw Obi-Wan enter the alley and a small group of clones, she knew she was trapped. Gabby breathed heavily with her back against the wall, terrified as she grasped that she was cornered. Unable to do anything else, she fell down to the ground and started crying into her arms, shivering even more as the cold caught up with her.

Obi-Wan approached Gabby. He tried to pick her up, but Gabby looked up and quickly started to scoot away and curl up into the corner of the wall before he could even touch her, even though it wouldn't do any good.

"No! No!" She whimpered.

Obi-Wan remained calm as he knelt down to Gabby saying, "Now, now. It's alright, Gabby. I know you're afraid now, but you need to come with me. You'll be safer in the temple than out here in the dark and cold."

Gabby just looked at him with teary eyes, then she looked down, hid her face in her hands, and started crying again as she felt too tired to even try running again.

"Shh. Don't cry, Gabby." Obi-Wan said, gently stroking Gabby's hair like he'd seen Anakin do whenever he calmed her down. But, Gabby didn't stop crying. Instead, she held her arms up to him, wanting to be held.

"Come here, little princess." Obi-Wan said as he gently took the little girl into his arms. He held her so her head rested on his shoulder. But, Gabby wasn't happy at all, and she was shivering violently.

Gabby breathed heavily and didn't even try to fight this time; at this point, she was too cold and tired to do almost anything except cry into her uncle's shoulder and clutch his robes.

"Shh. It's okay, little one." Obi-Wan hushed calmly as he gently patted Gabby on her back. "Shh. There now. Don't cry. It's okay."

Obi-Wan hugged her tightly in his arms, but Gabby continued crying harder by the minute.

Gabby hid her face in Obi-Wan's shoulder and cried harder, heartbroken and afraid that she would never see her parents again.

"Uncle Obi-Wan, it isn't fair! It isn't fair!" Gabby cried, not knowing what else to say. "I want Mommy and Daddy!"

"I know, little one. I know. For now, we'll keep you safe." Obi-Wan said apologetically as he began to carry her back to the Temple. Gabby cried harder into his shoulder, and clouds started to form, booming thunder as her negative emotions got stronger. Obi-Wan gently rubbed Gabby's back, trying to calm her down.

"Shh. Don't cry, Gabby. It's okay." He said. "There now. Shh."

Master Plo and Ahsoka soon caught up, both of them feeling like they'd just finished running a marathon. Many clones seem exhausted too.

"How did... General... Skywalker... keep up... with... her?" one clone panted, out of breath.

Gabby cried a little louder, which concerned everyone.

"Is she okay?" Ahsoka asked, gently patting the girl's back. "She's freezing."

"Well, she has been running out here without a sweater for hours." Obi-Wan said as he gently rocked Gabby. "Cody, do you have the blankets?"

"Right here, sir." Cody said, taking out a soft blanket, which Master Plo held up and motioned for Obi-Wan to place Gabby in, and the Kel Dor carefully swaddled the toddler in the blanket.

The blanket managed to lessen the child's shivering, but she was still crying.

"Hush now, little princess." Plo said, gently rocking the girl in his arms. "Uncle Plo is here. It is alright."

Gabby was still crying though, so Ahsoka took out the child's teddy and held it to her, hoping to calm her down.

"Is this what you want, Gabby?" Ahsoka cooed, shaking the bear a little to get Gabby's attention, but Gabby cried harder.

Gabby was placed into Ahsoka's arms then, and the Togruta comforted Gabby the best she could.

It was dark by the time Anakin woke up and recovered from the headache he got when Obi-Wan knocked him out earlier. Padme was there to get him from the hospital, and she was shocked when Anakin told her what led to his unconscious state. After they got Carousella from the vet, they headed home to figure something out.

"They can't just take Gabby, not legally." Padme said.

"Try telling them that." Anakin said with a sniffle. "I should've been able to protect her. But I guess this proves I'm just a failure as a father."

"Ani, don't say that." Padme said. "You didn't mean for this to happen. And we're going to get Gabby back. We just need the right help."

Carousella thought for a moment, and she said, "I think I know someone who can help us. But, I need time to gather them and collect some information."

Carousella headed out to look for help. Meanwhile, Anakin shut his eyes tightly as he started crying, Padme trying to calm him down. Although, she soon started crying herself.

Gabby cried even harder as she was brought back into the Temple, then even more storm clouds started to form outside, thunder and lightning striking as she cried in both sadness and anger. The rain fell faster as more tears fell from Gabby's eyes, and every time she sneezed from how cold she was, vines and other plants started growing in random places, and small, short violent windstorms occurred both indoors and outdoors. It appeared Gabby's emotions were affecting her powers now too. This time pretty strongly and out of her control.

Gabby rested in Obi-Wan's arms, still shivering as they returned to the Temple, though slightly less once they were inside where it was warm. She was still crying, and just wouldn't stop.

"Shh. It's time to stop crying now, little one." said Obi-Wan gently as he gently bounced Gabby in his arms and patted her back until she started breathing heavily from exhaustion before sneezing and shivering.

Obi-Wan took Gabby to Anakin's quarters to get her changed into her pajamas for the night.

Gabby started crying harder as Obi-Wan helped her into a pink unicorn patterned onesie he found in her wardrobe, the poor girl feeling too exhausted to move on her own. She wanted her father to be the one putting her to bed now more than ever.

"Shh. Settle down now, Gabby. You've had a long night."

Obi-Wan gently stroked Gabby's hair and rocked her in his arms, but she still wouldn't stop crying, coughing, or sneezing.

Ahsoka felt Gabby's forehead. It felt a little warm.

"Master Kenobi, I think Gabby's sick. She has a fever," said Ahsoka.

Obi-Wan got out a tissue and helped Gabby clean her nose before she started sniffling and coughing again.

"Poor thing. You're tired and have a cold, don't you?" He started to rock Gabby again as she cried again. "Shh. Shh. There now. Shh."

Obi-Wan sent Ahsoka to the healer's wing to get some supplies to help take care of Gabby. Meanwhile, he sat on the bed and tried to warm her up and comfort her.

"I know little one. I know." Obi-Wan cooed. "You'll be better soon. We'll put you to bed very soon."

Then, when Ahsoka returned, she poured some medicine into a little spoon, but Gabby turned her head away, refusing to take the stuff.

"Come on, Gabby. This'll help you feel better." Ahsoka sang, trying to get Gabby to cooperate. But, Gabby just grunted in disgust and turned her head away again, covering her mouth with her hands.

If Obi-Wan didn't see a resemblance between Gabby and Anakin before, he definitely saw one now.

Obi-Wan shook his head with a sigh. "Just like Anakin as a child, always refusing to take medicine."

Obi-Wan remembered from raising Anakin how to get him to take medicine. So, Obi-Wan started tickling Gabby's stomach, and as she started laughing, Ahsoka quickly got the spoon into Gabby's mouth and held it closed so Gabby would swallow it. Gabby did a lot of gagging after she reluctantly swallowed the putrid tasting medicine, despite that she had also been too tired to fight back much.

"There. That wasn't so bad, was it?" Ahsoka said.

Gabby sniffled and started shivering before she started to cry again, her mouth feeling dry from her long run and her cough.

Obi-Wan swaddled Gabby up again as he began to gently rock her again. But, Gabby still didn't stop crying, and Obi-Wan was quick to notice that Gabby's mouth and throat were getting dry. So, Obi-Wan got a sippy cup filled with fresh water and helped Gabby drink it to quench her thirst.

"Shh. Shh. There now, Gabby." Obi-Wan soothed quietly as the little girl drank. "It's okay. We know you're tired."

The wind slowly started to die down as Gabby started to settle down a little bit. After Gabby's thirst and water were all gone, Obi-Wan lay Gabby down in his arms and gently stroked her hair as he sang an old lullaby Master Qui-Gon Jinn sang to him when he was little:

Where the north wind meets the sea,

There's a river full of memory

Sleep, my darling, safe and sound,

For in this river all is found.

Gabby sleepily looked at Obi-Wan with slight awe in her eyes. Obi-Wan kept singing, seeing as it was working.

In her waters deep and true,

Lie the answers and a path for you

Dive down deep into her sound,

but not too far or you'll be drowned.

Yes she will sing to those who'll hear,

and in her song all magic flows

But can you brave what you most fear?

Can you face what the river knows?

Gabby's eyes slowly began to drift closed again as Obi-Wan continued to sing, and with a big yawn, she snuggled up into his chest with her teddy tucked underneath her arm.

Where the north wind meets the sea,

there's a mother full of memory

Come my darling, homeward bound.

When all is lost,

Then all is found.

To Obi-Wan's relief, Gabby was fast asleep by the time he stopped singing. That was also when his comm started beeping and Ahsoka quickly silenced it by answering it so it wouldn't wake Gabby. The Council, apparently, wanted Obi-Wan to bring the child to them.

Obi-Wan and Ahsoka arrived at the Council Chamber.

"As you can see," said Obi-Wan quietly, but loud enough for the Council to hear him. "Gabby is safe. But, I must ask that everyone speak softly, as we've just gotten her to sleep."

"She's caught a cold." Ahsoka explained. "She'll need all the rest she can get."

"Be sure you keep a close eye on her," said Master Windu. "She's a slippery one."

"Remember Obi-Wan," said Ki-Adi, almost too loudly, and everyone froze as the toddler yawned and stirred.

"Shh, shh, shh." Obi-Wan hushed Gabby and hummed his lullaby until he was sure she was still out like a light.

Ki-Adi lowered his voice and said, "Looking after the princess is an immense responsibility. If you find yourself unable to handle it..."

"I can handle her, Master Mundi." Obi-Wan reassured. "She will be well cared for."

Obi-Wan respectfully dismissed himself and brought Gabby back to her room. The little one was still out like a light. Obi-Wan really hoped she would feel better in the morning as he gently laid her down in her bed. Ahsoka was dismissed to her quarters for the night, and Obi-Wan tucked Gabby in.

Obi-Wan gently pet Gabby's head and whispered, "I'll take good care of you, little one. I promise. Goodnight." Then, Obi-Wan kissed her head and left to get to his own bed.
