Old Qui-Gon, New Life
Gabby woke up a few minutes earlier than usual this morning and decided to go see how her grandfather was doing. He didn't wake up at any time the day before, but he was alive and resting. She only hoped he was feeling okay now. But when she got to Obi-Wan's room, she quickly found she wasn't the only one who wanted to see him.
Carmine stood over the bed and looked at Qui-Gon as though he were dreaming. He tenderly placed a hand on his father's as tears came to his eyes.
"Please wake up soon, Dad." Carmine whispered.
"Couldn't sleep?" Gabby whispered, starling her uncle a little bit.
Carmine looked at his niece for a bit and then back to his father, who was still resting peacefully.
"It's been... so long. I thought... I thought I'd never..." Carmine had trouble getting out the words.
"I get it." Gabby said. "You have a second chance with your daddy now."
Carmine then picked up his niece and hugged her.
"Thank you. Thank you so much." Carmine whispered. "You have no idea what miracle you've done."
Gabby returned the hug and said, "I'm glad I could help. But remember, I can't cast that spell all willy-nilly. Not just because it's very difficult to cast and drains a bit of energy. But, also because the more it's cast, the more risk is taken of disrupting the balance between life and death and potentially doing more harm than good."
Carmine sighed and said that he understood. Right now, he was glad to have more time with his father, even if it was with him sleeping.
"You have no idea how much I've missed you." Carmine whispered to his father. "You'll love Caroline and Lamenta when you meet them."
That was when Obi-Wan entered the room.
"How is he?" Obi-Wan asked quietly.
"Still out like a light." Carmine said. He looked at Gabby again. "Did that spell book say how long it would be before a subject wakes up?"
Gabby thought back and answered, "Usually about fourteen to seventeen hours after revival at most. By now it's been about fifteen and a half, by my estimate. So, he should be waking up soon. In the meantime, we need to make sure we have everything necessary to nurture him to good health. Some fresh water, healthy food, and slowly getting him used to his body again through physical activity."
A little later, Anakin came in to check on his father. He was still processing the fact that the same Jedi who discovered him was alive again, and even more that he turned out to be his father. He had so many questions and had no doubt that Carmine did too. Why did Carmine grow up freely while Anakin remained a slave? Why didn't their mother get both of them freed? Why did neither of their parents tell either twin about the other parent or child?
Anakin wasn't surprised when he saw Carmine and Obi-Wan looking over Qui-Gon. It was hard for all of them when Qui-Gon was killed at the hand of Darth Maul. Now that horrible Sith was taken to be turned to stone and locked away forever in an inescapable prison in the Enchantra galaxy.
"How is he?" Anakin asked.
"Still not waking up." Carmine said sadly.
Obi-Wan gently felt his master's forehead; his temperature felt pretty normal. Then Anakin came in to get his turn being with Qui-Gon.
"I...I don't know what to say. What can I say?" Anakin said. "Why didn't you tell me you were my father? Why did Carmine get to live freely while Mom and I were stuck in slavery? Did you... did you love Carmine more than me?" Anakin felt tears come to his eyes, and one fell onto Qui-Gon's cheek.
Anakin felt a hand on his shoulder. It was Obi-Wan's.
"I'm sure that's not the case Anakin." Obi-Wan said. "I might not have known my master was a father, but I'm certain he loved both you and Carmine the same."
"Of course, I do." said a new but familiar voice.
The three Jedi quickly looked back at the bed to see that Qui-Gon was finally awake.
Carmine was the first to break out of his frozen state and gain a big smile as he immediately hugged his father firmly but gently.
"Dad!" Carmine exclaimed, happy tears coming to his eyes. "You're really alive."
Qui-Gon returned the hug and stroked Carmine's hair like he used to do when he was little.
"I'm here son. Both of my sons." Qui-Gon said, looking at Anakin.
Anakin still felt a bit frozen as he approached his father once again.
Anakin took Qui-Gon's free hand, and the older man pulled him into the hug, making a group hug between father and sons.
"I... I thought you didn't..." Anakin began.
"I always did want you, Anakin. Both you and your brother." Qui-Gon said. "I tried to find you and your mother, but you were both gone."
"What about me?" Carmine asked.
"That is a story I believe my grandchildren would like to hear." Qui-Gon said.
"That's right, you haven't yet had the pleasure of knowing them... my old Master." Obi-Wan said with a smile, also holding happy tears in his eyes.
The twins started to help Qui-Gon up from the bed, except he got a bit wobbly on his feet and fell down.
"Dad, are you okay?!" The twins exclaimed in unison, helping Qui-Gon up.
"I'm fine, thank you." Qui-Gon felt a little wobbly again as he stood up once more. But this time, his sons held him steady.
"Hmm. Must be a side effect from that spell. You forget how to walk." Anakin hypothesized.
"I guess it makes sense. He hasn't had his body in over twelve years." Carmine shrugged. "Hey, Obi-Wan. You mind fetching the kids?"
So, while Obi-Wan went to get the kids, Anakin and Carmine started to help their father learn to walk again.
When Obi-Wan told Gabby that Qui-Gon was awake, Gabby didn't hesitate to get her brother and cousin and rush them all over to finally meet their grandfather.
The kids ran down the hall to go meet their grandfather now that he was awake.
"Daddy has told me so much about what Grandpa was like," said Lamenta. "Do you think he's gonna like us?"
"Of course he will. We're his grandkids. What grandpa doesn't love his grandchildren? My grandpa on my mommy's side loves me and Boba and always spoils us. Grandpa Qui-Gon should be fun. Uncle Obi-Wan did say once that he had a good sense of humor, and he was always great with children."
"I just hope he doesn't mind that I'm adopted," said Boba.
"Boba, we've gone over this a million times. You don't need to be related to be part of this family." Gabby said. "Besides, I think Grandpa will love you once he meets you and the rest of us."
"I meet him first!" Lamenta exclaimed as they came to the door.
"Hey, I'm the older cousin!" Gabby said, racing to meet her grandfather first.
"Hey, I'm the oldest!" Boba said, rushing in.
But as the kids rushed in, they all rammed right into each other and fell into a kid pile.
"Boba! Get off of me!' Gabby cried out as her brother lay on top of her. "Can't... breathe!"
"As soon as Lamenta gets off me," said Boba, looking at his cousin.
"Maybe if you hadn't tried to rush right past me, we wouldn't be in this mess." Lamenta said, getting up.
"Kids, be more careful." Anakin scolded.
Suddenly, Qui-Gon lost his balance again and fell to the floor, taking the twins with him.
"Whoa!" Anakin exclaimed.
"Yikes!" Carmine exclaimed.
Obi-Wan tried to help, only to lose his own balance with the others. And Obi-Wan fell onto his stomach, Qui-Gon landed on Obi-Wan, Anakin falling onto his back onto his father's, and Carmine fell forward onto Anakin's stomach. The kids laughed as the grownups were now in pretty much the same position they'd been in just a few seconds ago. Lamenta took a picture with her phone.
"Hey, you'd better not post that, Lamenta." Carmine said.
"Don't worry, Daddy." Lamenta said, laughing. "That's for the scrapbooks."
"If you're done laughing at us," said Anakin. "would the three of you mind helping us out of this mess?"
"We're coming, Dad." Boba chuckled.
Boba and Gabby helped their uncle up first while Lamenta pulled Anakin's robe to give him a pull up. Then, the twins helped their father up so Obi-Wan could get up with a little help from Gabby and Lamenta.
"Would these adorable ones happen to be my grandchildren?" Qui-Gon asked.
"Yes, Dad." Anakin said. "These are my kids. Boba and I think you've met Gabriella."
"Indeed. And she started screaming when we met." Qui-Gon chuckled.
Gabby looked embarrassed, her cheeks turning pink.
"I didn't know we were related then; I was four at the time and saw a ghost!" Gabby defended as her brother and cousin started laughing. "How did you expect me to react?"
"Carmine reacted the same way just seeing things levitate." Anakin said.
"I told you making him watch those movies last Halloween was a bad idea." Obi-Wan said.
"Carmine never liked ghost stories as a child." Qui-Gon said.
"I can't help it if those give me nightmares." Carmine said. Then he picked up Lamenta. "Anyway, now you've met my brother's kids, but you haven't met mine."
"I'm Lamenta," said the black-haired girl with a cute wave hello.
"You both have such beautiful children." Qui-Gon said.
"We're all really happy to meet you...Grandpa." Gabby said.
Boba then looked at his father and uncle and had a question.
"Speaking of kids. I don't know if you told Dad and Uncle Carmine already, but which one's the older twin?"
The twins then both looked curious as they helped their father sit down on the bed.
"You know, I've been wondering that too." Anakin said. "Which one of us is older?"
"Anakin keeps saying it's him," said Carmine. "But we don't know for sure, as I keep telling him."
"Actually, by three minutes," said Qui-Gon. "Anakin is the older twin."
"Ha! I knew it!" Anakin said.
"Lucky guess," Carmine shrugged.
"Oh, don't act like you're not disappointed, little brother." Anakin smirked.
"Oh, really? That's what you're gonna start calling me now?" Carmine scolded. "You're only older by three minutes."
"Which makes me your big brother." said Anakin. "So I guess that means I'm your babysitter."
"Real mature, Anakin. Real mature."
"Don't the two of you start arguing about this," Qui-Gon scolded.
The kids giggled as they saw their fathers being scolded by their father.
"Any luck with standing up yet?" Gabby asked.
"A little progress, I think." Carmine said, helping his father up again, only for him to still be slightly wobbly. "But... still not quite fully balanced."
"That's to be expected." Gabby said. "But, he'll get the hang of it with a little help."
That was when the group heard a loud growling sound.
"What was that?" Carmine asked, looking around.
The loud sound came again, and this time Anakin traced it to Qui-Gon's stomach.
"Someone sounds hungry." Anakin chuckled.
"Another common effect after being revived." Gabby said.
Qui-Gon then started to feel parched.
"Thirsty?" Gabby asked, getting out some water and giving it to her grandfather.
Qui-Gon took a big gulp.
"Thank you." Qui-Gon sighed with relief.
"Let's get you something to eat." Gabby said, helping her grandfather up. "One foot in front of the other."
"Are you sure it's wise to take him outside now?" Obi-Wan asked.
"He's gotta get out sometime." Gabby said. "We can't keep him cooped up in here forever. Besides, once we explain everything to the others, I'm sure they'll adapt." And with that, the kids helped their grandfather up and out of the room.
As expected, the older Jedi were especially shocked when they saw Qui-Gon Jinn walking through the halls, alive, and seeming to be learning how to walk from a twelve-year-old and two five-year-old girls.
"Don't worry, Grandpa. Everything will be okay." Gabby said.
Later, the Council requested that Qui-Gon Jinn be brought to them for further testing.
Master Windu performed the same test the Council used for Anakin to test out his connection to the Force, and a blood sample was taken from him to check his midichlorian count, and to their surprise, they also found gold blood cells in his bloodstream. Since Qui-Gon was brought to the Temple when he was a baby and gold blood cells didn't tend to develop until an Enchanted was at least five, it made sense that his original midichlorian count didn't show any. But, that made everyone wonder... what was Qui-Gon's power?
"Let me show you," said Qui-Gon, and he lifted up Master Windu's chair, with Mace sitting in it, using his hands to lift him.
The Council and Qui-Gon's family were all shocked when they saw Qui-Gon had super strength.
"How did I never notice before?" Obi-Wan asked.
"You did. When you were the girls' age." Qui-Gon said. "Do you remember when you lost your ball under the couch?"
Obi-Wan thought back to when he was about six, maybe seven. He recalled that he had a ball he liked to play with sometimes, but then one day, he dropped it and it rolled under the couch. He tried to use the Force to get it, but he was still learning then. And then Qui-Gon came, and the couch was lifted up so Obi-Wan could get his ball. Obi-Wan had thought Qui-Gon used the Force to lift it, but it turned out he was lifting it with his hands. But then, he thought he was just using the Force to make himself look as strong as a superhero.
"I remember now. But, why didn't you use that power after?" Obi-Wan asked.
"I did. Sometimes. Normally when others weren't looking." Qui-Gon said. "I first developed my strength when I wasn't much older than Gabriella and Lamenta are now. One day, I decided to look into where I came from, and eventually I found my mother, who then began teaching me to control my abilities in secret."
"So you didn't just disappear when you and Mom fell in love?" Anakin asked.
"No. I was a rebel when I was young." Qui-Gon said.
"So you're the reason Anakin is such a troublemaker?" Mace said, though more as a statement than a question.
"Like father, like son." Master Mundi said.
Anakin got some time alone with his father as he was finally getting the hang of walking again.
"You have indeed grown very much since our last meeting, son." said Qui-Gon.
"There's one thing I still don't understand." Anakin said. "Why didn't you or Mom tell me you were my father, or that I had a brother?"
"It was for your own safety, Anakin."
Qui-Gon explained to Anakin that he learned from his mother that they were descent from royalty, powerful royalty, and those who sought to rid the universe of all Solaran magic were still at large. They knew if the twins were found, there would be no hope for the kingdom of Solaris being fully restored. Over the years, as King Reginald and Queen Serafina's descendants and their powers grew, the land they fled years ago began to revive itself. As long as the royal family remained safe, their kingdom would one day be restored completely.
"After I gave Carmine to my mother, I went to retrieve you as well. But I found that you and your mother were gone." Qui-Gon said. "It wasn't until we landed on Tatooine to protect Padme that I was finally able to see you again."
"And again, why didn't you say anything?"
"It wasn't the right moment. I was devastated when I couldn't free your mother as well. I had sincerely hoped if I could, we would be married and raise you and your brother together as a family. But instead, I had to settle for fulfilling Shmi's request to take care of you. I had planned to tell you of our relation to each other once we arrived on Coruscant after the mission. But then... I was killed."
"And you didn't tell Obi-Wan because you knew the Jedi would only have another reason not to let me be part of the Order?"
"Indeed. I had also hoped then you might have gotten to meet your brother. But obviously, none went as hoped. I only hope now I will have a chance to be a better father to you and Carmine, as well as grandfather to your children."
Anakin smiled and hugged his father. He didn't care about the past anymore. His father was here and now, and now he knew for sure he was never fatherless.
After a while, people started to slowly adjust to Qui-Gon being alive and roaming the Temple. And over time, he finally managed to regain the strength he had before he died. He turned out to be a great grandfather to the kids too.
Carmine and Anakin did as much catching up with their father as possible too. One way they did that was showing him scrapbooks of old family memories they made together before and after the twins found one another, and sharing stories of all the adventures they had. The kids liked sharing their stories with him too. Plus, on days when Anakin didn't want Gabby to go into the field, Qui-Gon turned out to be a great babysitter alongside Carmine, and tutoring them in using the Force. Things were definitely going to be different with the revived Jedi Master around, and things now seemed like they were gonna be okay. But, they didn't know then what darkness was about to escape from who-knows-where.
