Monarch Wings

Four months went by since Qui-Gon was revived, and despite the Clone War still going on, there were some Jedi who were pretty happy now. And their names were Gabriella Skywalker and Lamenta Jinn.

Gabby and Lamenta were both very happy that Qui-Gon was such a loving grandfather to both of them. He played with them, gave them lots of hugs and kisses, and even showed them all kinds of mischievous tricks to perform with the Force, especially tickling and/or scare pranks. Gabby used one of those to give Caleb Dume a good scare to finally get back at him for making her scared of clowns. Sure, revenge wasn't the Jedi way, but she was a child, and it was a lot of fun being the prankster instead of the victim.

And every night before the girls went to bed, Qui-Gon sang them the lullaby he sang to Carmine, and Carmine often sang along too. Tonight was no different... except for one thing.

Gabby woke up sometime during the night and snuck out of her room to sit on one of the roofs where Anakin had grown some zinnias. Her father was away on another mission with his Padawan and Obi-Wan, and they'd been gone for three days already. She missed them all something awful, especially her father. Earlier that morning, she'd gotten a call from her father saying that the mission was progressing steadily, and they should be home very soon. Still, she really missed him.

Already too, they'd made a lot of progress with the Disappearo Dust that Carmine and the girls created to rid the clones of their inhibitor chips. Queen Saphira and King Coralos were happy to help when Anakin explained to them what they'd found out about the inhibitor chips, and they got many sirens to agree to help once Carmine taught them the song to sing and how to work the Disappearo Dust once they made some big batches. They had hope that they got rid of enough chips to save the Jedi from this Order 66. Unfortunately, they still hadn't found out who was behind the clone war.

Gabby sighed as she looked up at the moon shining beautifully in the sky.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Lamenta said, coming to sit by her cousin.

Gabby was a bit startled. Her cousin was so quiet sometimes, she could pretty much appear like a ghost. Sometimes, Gabby wondered if that was how she made the grownups feel when she was smaller.

"How long have you been there?" Gabby asked.

"A couple minutes," said Lamenta. "Everyone's having sweet dreams so far. Then, I realized you weren't dreaming because you're awake, and I needed some fresh air."

Lamenta sat close by Gabby as she continued to look at the moon. She turned her eyes toward her cousin and said, "You miss your daddy?"

Gabby silently nodded.

"I know how you feel." Lamenta said. "Remember when my parents left for a month on tour?"

"Yes."

"Well, that was the first time I'd ever stayed anywhere for more than a few days, and without either of my parents." Lamenta said. "I was a train wreck."

Lamenta remembered it like it was yesterday.

Two months ago...

Before her parents left, Lamenta hugged them and cried, not wanting to let go.

"I know, Lamenta." Caroline said. "We'll miss you so much."

"Don't worry, Little Lamb." Carmine said. "Mommy and Daddy will be back before you know it. And your grandfather, uncle, and aunt will be here to take good care of you."

"I don't want you to go," cried Lamenta. "Take me with you like you always do."

"We know this is a big change, Sweetie." Caroline said, caressing her daughter's cheek. "But you need to be strong. This is your chance for a normal life. You're only going to be a child once, and you should spend it playing with other kids and having fun, not hiding backstage and waking up in different time zones every week, never staying long enough to make real friends."

"We're only thinking of what's best for you, Lamenta." Carmine added. "Even if it means we have to be away for a while. But it won't be forever. We'll only be gone for a month, and then we'll come home and give you a big hug. I promise."

Lamenta had to let go of her parents so they could finish getting ready. So, she sat on a chair and started crying again, hugging her plush lamb, but not even Lammy could cheer her up at that moment. That was when someone came and knelt down to her.

"Are you alright, Lamenta?" said a calm, gentle voice.

Lamenta looked up to see it was her grandfather Qui-Gon. He look concerned for her. Lamenta's eyes were filled with tears, and she could barely get a word out as she was still crying.

"There, there." Qui-Gon gently stroked her hair. "Tell your grandpa what's the matter."

Lamenta sniffled and managed to get out a few words.

"I...I don't want... my parents to leave..." Lamenta whimpered. "I've never been away from them... for more than a day. And that happened only once in my entire life."

"Lamenta... I know how much it hurts to miss someone. I had to be without your father and your uncle for so long, and I've regretted every single day that I couldn't get both of them freed from slavery when they were babies, and even more that I couldn't be there to raise them. I only got to see your father once a year, and I wish I had made the right decision and left the Order to be with him."

Lamenta was confused as to where her grandfather was going.

"The point I'm trying to make... your father will come back for you. He and your mother love you very much. They are only leaving you here so you have a chance to live a life without all the stress of being on a musical tour." Qui-Gon said. "And I intend on caring for you everyday as I should have done with my children years ago."

Lamenta started crying again, and Qui-Gon took her into his arms to comfort her.

When the time finally came for Carmine and Caroline to leave, everyone in the family gave them each a big hug and wished them good luck for every concert on their tour.

"You'll take good care of Lamenta, won't you?" Carmine asked.

"Of course, Carmine. You've got nothing to worry about." Anakin said.

"Lamenta will be in very good hands as long as you're away." Padme said.

"Remember, her favorite bedtime book is on her night table, and we always give her warm milk when she can't sleep." Caroline reminded her brother-in-law and his wife. "And you remember that Lamenta needs to have her hair brushed precisely fifty times before bed."

"We know. You only told us the list like ten thousand times for the last week." Anakin rolled his eyes.

"That's my baby you're rolling your eyes at." Caroline warned.

Anakin wasn't sure who he was more frightened of upsetting, his wife or his sister-in-law.

Lamenta was the last one who got to say goodbye to her parents. She was still devastated to see them go, but at least she wasn't crying as much now.

Her parents knelt down to her and started to speak to her.

Carmine held Lamenta's shoulders and said, "This isn't easy for us, Little Lamb. We're gonna be apart for longer than any of us are used to and it's gonna be scary. But we'll get through it together even while we're apart. Can you be strong for Daddy and Mommy?"

Lamenta sniffled and nodded to her father.

"Before we go...' Caroline began, taking something out from her purse. "We were saving this for your birthday, but I think now is a much better time to give it to you."

Caroline held up a shiny silver chain, from which hung a beautiful charm of a full moon with two silver stars on each side.

"It's beautiful." Lamenta managed to say.

"Read what it says on the moon," smiled Caroline.

Lamenta had just learned how to read, but she managed to make out the little message engraved on the moon"

Shine bright, Our Little Star

Caroline and Carmine placed the necklace around their daughter's neck, and the little one held the charm in her hands. That necklace served as a promise that her parents would come back for her, and that their love for her remained throughout the night and every single day.

Present Day...

"I remember now," said Gabby. "I cried when I saw you crying. But, your parents went on a musical tour, not to fight in battle."

"That's still a pretty risky job. Every show, Daddy runs into crazy fans and/or reporters who try to see his face. If they succeeded, we'd never live peacefully, and you know I get anxious with so many cameras around."

"Yeah, that's a good point. So... how did you stay so strong? You fell into depression for three days after your parents left."

"Well... after I took a little time alone, I remembered what my parents told me. That I had to be strong, and then I sang myself Mommy's lullaby."

Lamenta then began to sing Caroline's lullaby for her. It was like Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, but Caroline changed the words.

Twinkle, twinkle, Little Star

Lay down safely in my arms

Dream that in the sky you fly

Through the endless diamond sky

Twinkle, twinkle, Little Star

Love will guide you near and far

Gabby thought it sounded so sweet. And hearing Lamenta share it with her made her start to feel better.

"Does Uncle Anakin have a special lullaby for you?" Lamenta asked.

Gabby thought about it and decided to spill. "Yes. He does. And it goes like this."

Come stop your crying, it'll be alright.

Just take my hand, hold it tight.

I will protect you from all around you.

I will be here, don't you cry.

"I know this song." Lamenta said. "My daddy sang it to me once too. He could never remember where he learned it... until your daddy told him it was what Grandma Shmi sang to them."

Then, the cousins began singing together.

For one so small

You seem so strong
My arms will hold you
Keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
Can't be broken
I will be here don't you cry

'Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more

You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart
Always
Always

The cousins then embraced one another, and something magical happened, and both girls started to float up into the air and they were surrounded by white sparkles.

"What's happening?!" They asked at the same time.

And then, that was when the sparkles unleashed a flash, and both girls were shocked to see that each of them had sprouted wings! Both of them looked like those of monarch butterflies. Gabby's were the colors of a beautiful sunrise of pink, orange and yellow, and Lamenta's were purple and sparkly like a beautiful starry night sky.

"Oh my gosh!" Lamenta exclaimed.

"We have wings!" Gabby exclaimed as she flew a bit, but lost her balance and fell back down onto the roof.

"How did this even happen?" Lamenta asked.

"Maybe it's a new power." Gabby shrugged. "Let's check the Learning Libro."

Gabby summoned her book, only to find it didn't have any information on her wings or Lamenta's. So, the girls decided to go right to someone else.

"Daddy, wake up!" Lamenta said, shaking her father awake.

Carmine groaned and sat up with a yawn. He turned on the lights.

"What's wrong, Lamenta?" Carmine squinted, then he put on his glasses and was shocked when he saw that his daughter had wings.

And that was when Qui-Gon came in with Gabby.

"It's happened already?" Carmine said, shocked.

Both girls looked confused.

"What happened already?" Lamenta asked.

"Please don't tell me this means..." Gabby started.

"No! It's not that. You're both still too young to go through that." Carmine said.

"Then, what are these and how do you know about them?" Lamenta asked.

Qui-Gon and Carmine had the girls sit down, and they showed them that they each had wings like they did as well. Carmines were white and gold with patterns of what appeared to be music notes, and Qui-Gon's were a burnt orange color with specks of blue.

"We both got these at different times." Carmine said. "All blood monarchy of Solaris get them at some point in their lives. Most of them after they turn sixteen. But, when one commits an exceptional deed, they sometimes can appear early."

That was when Gabby thought of something.

"The revival spell!" Gabby said. "Lamenta and I both did that spell together."

"But that was four months ago," said Lamenta. "Why are they only appearing now?"

"Did anything happen tonight that might have triggered any magic?" Qui-Gon asked.

"We just talked about missing our daddies, and then we sang lullabies, and then we hugged." Gabby said.

Carmine theorized perhaps that it was the girls coming together the way they did that ignited the magic needed to give them wings. According to him, wings were a sign of growth, and being able to come together the way the cousins did seems to have qualified as growth for both of them, and their embrace sealed the deal.

"But, how do we make them disappear?" Gabby asked. "It might be hard to get dressed and undressed with these things, even with my transforming magic. How would I twirl to change my outfits?"

Qui-Gon chuckled and said, "Not to worry. It's very simple to do." Then he took a breath, and had his wings fold in, and they vanished.

The same happened with Carmine, so the girls tried it, and it worked.

"But wait..." Gabby said. "Daddy doesn't have any wings."

"Maybe it's because he hasn't spent as much time using magic as any of us have." Carmine said. "Thus, certain spells and rewards of growth will work a little differently on him. But, he should get them eventually. For now, I think both of you need to get back to bed."

So, the girls did head back to their beds to resume resting for the night.

Meanwhile, in a dark castle somewhere far, far away...

A white butterfly flew into the window towards a woman who sat in a throne in the dark, with only the moonlight shining through the window. The woman caught the butterfly in her hand and covered it with the other, it transforming into a black and red moth.

"Our time is coming..." said the woman.

To be continued...
