Hunt For Ziro

It finally happened. The very power a certain Jedi princess had been wishing for for as long as she could remember.

The Jedi Council was in total shock and disbelief when Anakin told them how Gabby rescued her family as well as about a dozen senators from bounty hunters by use of the Force. They even asked him to bring Gabby in so they could test her out.

Carousella brought in some various items: a book, a rock, a rope, a ball, and Gabby's teddy bear. But, the Council performed a screen test like they did for Anakin when he first arrived at the Temple.

Mace explained to Gabby that he was going to have five different pictures appear on the screen, and Gabby had to tell him what each one was by using the Force. The first picture was a ship. The second one was a cup. The third was a speeder. And the fourth was a cup again.

"This one will be the hardest." Mace said. Then, he switched the picture to something entirely different from the others.

Gabby closed her eyes and concentrated.

"It's a flower." She said.

"But what type of flower?"

"A stargazer. Pink and white, and a blue butterfly is sitting on it."

Master Plo looked at the picture.

"She's good." Plo said, astonished.

The Council was impressed so far.

"I can do more than that." Gabby said.

Suddenly, the book Carousella put down started flapping and floating like a butterfly. Gabby made the ball and rock float around too, and made the rope move around like a snake being charmed. And she made her teddy bear dance.

The whole Council was in total shock when they saw just how powerful this little girl was already growing in her newest power.

"Powerful, you are, Young Gabriella." Yoda said. "But much to learn you have."

"Like what?" Gabby asked. "I know how to levitate and sense things."

"The Force is a lot more than making things fly, doing mind tricks, and sensing, Princess." Anakin said. "Even the most powerful Jedi in the Order, including me, had a lot to learn when we grew strong enough to use the Force for the first time."

"The question is who is the correct Jedi to teach her?" said Master Koth.

"Can't Daddy teach me?" Gabby asked.

"It's impossible for a Jedi to take on more than one Padawan." Mace said.

"But I'm only three and a half." Gabby said. "You said a Jedi has to be at least thirteen before becoming a Padawan."

"Well, I became one at age nine." Anakin said.

Gabby looked at her father. "Whose side are you on?" Then she looked at the Council. "Daddy already teaches Ahsoka and takes care of me at the same time. Why shouldn't he get to teach me? If he wants to, anyway."

The Jedi Council looked at each other. She did raise a couple of good points. She was indeed too young to be an official Padawan, but they agreed that Anakin had the most experience with Gabby and she trusted him. Plus, they had the strongest connection to each other. So, they decided to have Anakin do a trial run as Gabby's teacher.

Even though Gabby managed to save her family from the bounty hunters, she couldn't stop the release of Ziro the Hutt from the Republic prison.

So, the Jedi Council assigned Obi-Wan Kenobi to retrieve the Hutt with the help of his unicorn Peppermint Twist as well as Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos. Unknown to the Jedi, however, Ziro the Hutt was in the clutches of the five Hutt families of the distant world of Nal Hutta.

Ziro stood under a spotlight in a dark room as he spoke to the Hutt Council.

"Gentlemen, gentlemen, I see no need for resentment in light of this joyous occasion of my freedom."

Another Hutt spoke.

"Of course, I do appreciate the help in my escape." Ziro continued.

Then another Hutt spoke.

"Oh, I have no illusions about the fact that my escape was the result of the highly sensitive knowledge that I possess." Ziro sipped a drink he carried. "a holo-diary cataloging the nefarious deeds of this council."

A Hutt with a burning cigar in his mouth grumbled and exclaimed a threat at Ziro.

"Kill me and the diary will show up on the step of the Senate." said Ziro, taking another sip of his drink. "The cold, hard reality is that as long as I control this highly sensitive material my memory will only get duller."

And then another Hutt asked Ziro something.

"Yes, take me to my room." said Ziro, spilling liquid on the floor. "I only hope the accommodations are satisfactory."

He sipped the last of his drink and tossed the glass onto the floor.

Meanwhile, at the Jedi Temple, Obi-Wan and Peppermint stood by the ship, waiting for someone.

Cody stepped up and noticed Obi-Wan stroking his beard, thinking.

"Sir, you seem troubled." said Cody, his hands behind his back.

"I've sensed it too." said Peppermint. "Especially since I'm standing right next to you."

"Quinlan Vos has that effect." said Obi-Wan.

"Ah, yes. That Jedi has quite a reputation." said Cody.

"That may be overstating it, Cody."

"I've never met this Quinlan Vos." said Peppermint. "What can you tell me about him?"

"Well, not sugarcoating it," said Obi-Wan, stroking Peppermint's muzzle. "Let's just say he's crazy."

"Crazy how? Like Gabby crazy or crazy like?" Peppermint flailed her tongue and made spitting sounds. "...crazy?"

Obi-Wan wiped off the little bit of horse spit that hit him and said, "Let's just say, somewhere in between those two. And next time, say it, don't spray it."

"Sorry."

"Ship entry from the west, sir." Cody pointed in the direction he spotted a ship.

A lot of dust flew threw the air as the gunship flew up above.

"Hey, Kenobi." said a new voice. And the owner of the voice leaped from the ship, did a front flip, and landed smoothly on the ground. He was none other than Quinlan Vos.

"Hey, Commander. Looking good." said Vos to Cody. Quinlan then approached Kenobi. "Kenobi, you look worse for wear." he playfully slapped Obi-Wan's shoulder. "How's temple life?"

Obi-Wan just gave an unimpressed look. Peppermint snorted, getting an uncomfortable feeling from this new Jedi.

"Good to see you too." said Quinlan. He looked at Peppermint. "And you have a pet now, too."

"Yes, well, if you could tell time half as well as you could stick a landing," said Obi-Wan. "we wouldn't be behind schedule, now would we?"

"Well, that's your opinion, man." Quinlan shrugged.

"Punctuality is no joke." Peppermint said.

"And it talks." Quinlan patted Peppermint's muzzle, and she tried to bite him, but missed. "Whoa! Feisty too."

"Peppermint does not like being touched that way." Obi-Wan said, defending his horse. "Now, let's get down to business. Ziro the Hutt was broken out during a hostage takeover."

"Yeah, I read the briefing about that mess." Quinlan said.

"I suspect Jabba the Hutt is behind this." Obi-Wan said. "He still has it out for Ziro over the kidnapping of his son."

"Well, I can't really say I blame him." Peppermint said. "No sugarcoating it, I'd really teach them a lesson if anyone dared threaten Firework, my little sister."

"Well, my information indicates that Ziro has damaging evidence against the Hutt council." said Quinlan. "My guess is they've taken him to the Hutt home planet Nal Hutta."

"As for this bounty hunter Cad Bane," said Obi-Wan as he and the others headed towards the ship. "we must capture both he and his quarry Ziro to the courts. I trust you and I can keep eyes forward in this common goal?"

"No problem. I owe Bane one anyway." said Quinlan. "I'll fly. I hope you can keep eyes forward while watching your pet."

"Peppermint is not a pet. She is a companion." Obi-Wan said, brushing Peppermint's mane, which she liked very much.

"Well, either way, you're my copilot."

Quinlan then boarded the ship.

"I was afraid he'd say that." said Obi-Wan.

"I thought spending time in Carousella's body got you over your problem with flying." Peppermint said.

Carousella had shared the story with Peppermint about the time she, Obi-Wan, Gabby, and Anakin took on a mission while switched into each other's bodies. Peppermint found it pretty funny that the four of them found so much difficulty being in each other's shoes for a day.

"Flying with feathery wings and piloting a ship are two different things." said Obi-Wan.

Obi-Wan and Peppermint then boarded the ship together. And off they took to begin their search for Ziro.

Birds were squawking outside the palace of the Hutt Council.

Meanwhile, the Hutts were entertained by some Twilek dancers and a Pa'lowick singer named Sy Snootles

The very singer went to the detention block after the show to visit Ziro. She tricked the big pig-like guards into fighting each other as a distraction by telling them that Gardulla the Hutt wanted to know which of the two was stronger.

Sy then opened the cell and reported the fight to another guard who stood by the actual cell that held Ziro.

Once the guards were all distracted, Sy approached Ziro.

"Ziro, honey, my true love, what happened to you?" Sy asked. "I thought you were coming back for me. I waited so long. I thought you didn't love me anymore."

"Our separation last time was a bit abrupt," said Ziro. "And I do blame Jabba for that."

"Jabba?"

"He forced me to have you sent away from Coruscant, shattering the serenity of the happiest time of my life."

"Oh, Ziro, honey, being with you was the happiest time of my life too. And now hearing you say that makes me the luckiest little Pa'lowick the galaxy had ever known."

"Unfortunately, the cage that entraps me now also entraps the chance of loving you again."

Ziro held Sy's hand dearly.

"What do they want with you?" the Pa'lowick asked. "Why would they do this?"

"As hard as it is to confess this to you, Snooty," said Ziro, turning away. "I'm not a perfect Hutt."

"I don't care what you've done or why they want to hurt you. I only care about us being together... forever."

Ziro turned back to his girlfriend in disbelief. "You... you really mean that?"

"From the bottom of my fluid sack."

Ziro gasped. "Unfortunately, my love, there's no way for us to be together as long as I'm in this dreadful cell."

"With true love, there's always a way."

And the two of them kissed.

Meanwhile, Obi-Wan, Quinlan Vos, and Peppermint flew through the rainy weather currently on Nal Hutta. They soon landed on a platform and entered the Hutt Council chambers, where there seemed to be a party going on. But the music literally scratched to a stop when the jedi were spotted.

One of the Hutts spoke, and a protocol droid translated, "How goes the war, gentlemen?"

"Great Gardulla, we bring unfortunate news." said Obi-Wan. "Ziro the Hutt has escaped our custody with the aid of the bounty hunter Cad Bane."

"The great Gardulla already knows this, Jedi knights." Gardulla's droid translated.

Quinlan stepped forward and said, "I'm beginning to think you're the ones who broke him out."

"And why would the great Hutt families do such a thing?"

Great? I wouldn't call a family that enslaves innocent people, including children great. Peppermint thought. She'd heard bits and pieces about Anakin's past from Gabby. Gabby didn't know everything, but she did know that Anakin's first slave master was a Hutt named Gardulla, who lost him and his mother betting on a pod race.

"That's what I'd like to know." said Quinlan.

"Quinlan, the Hutts are our allies." said Obi-Wan.

As Gardulla spoke and her droid translated, Quinlan noticed something on the floor. A glass. But not just any glass. The same glass Ziro tossed earlier when he spoke to the Hutt Council. Quinlan picked it up and sensed it was a clue that Ziro had been there.

"Maybe next time, I'll come alone, hmm?" said Quinlan, placing the cup on a tray.

Peppermint snorted in annoyance with Quinlan's sass.

"We only came to deliver the message." said Obi-Wan. "We should be leaving now."

But then, one of the Hutts commented on Kenobi's beautiful, sweet-scented horse, calling her a very colorful prize. They asked how much he wanted for her. But Obi-Wan knew they would just make her a slave, even if he did want to sell her.

"Peppermint is not a slave, nor is she for sale." Obi-Wan told them. "She is under my protection."

Peppermint smiled a bit, feeling glad that Obi-Wan cared for her so much. Obi-Wan took Peppermint's rein and walked her out, Quinlan right beside them.

"Ziro was here," whispered Quinlan. "He was holding one of the cups."

"Nice work." Obi-Wan said quietly.

But, Peppermint stopped as her ears shot up and she looked back, sniffing the air.

"Come, Peppermint." Obi-Wan said, gently tugging the rein to get his unicorn to follow. "Can't leave you alone with the Hutts, knowing they wanted to purchase you."

Peppermint reluctantly followed the Jedi, but the very thing she sensed was nearby was definitely far from friendly. And that thing was Cad Bane.

The Jedi and the unicorn came across two guard laying on the floor. And then, an empty cell.

"Vos, Ziro escaped." said Obi-Wan.

Peppermint sniffed the air and grimaced in disgust. "Ugh! Too bad he didn't take the smell with him."

"I think he had help." said Quinlan.

"We'd best hurry." said Obi-Wan.

"I call I ride the horse!"

Quinlan jumped right onto Peppermint's saddle.

"Agh! Okay, get off me." Peppermint said.

"Come on, girl. Let's go!" Quinlan slapped Peppermint near her tail, which provoked the unicorn greatly, and she threw him off her back and whinnied in anger.

"Clearly, you do not know how to handle horses!" Obi-Wan said. He approached carefully and started to use the Force to reach into Peppermint's mind to calm her down.

Slowly, Peppermint stopped thrashing and kicking. Then, Obi-Wan stroked her muzzle to soothe her.

"There, there." Obi-Wan soothed. "It's all right now."

Obi-Wan climbed onto the saddle then and gently pet Peppermint on the side of her neck.

"I will ride her for now. You may watch and learn until you know how to properly treat an equine."

Later, the Hutts discovered as well that Ziro had escaped.

"The Jedi aren't the ones that broke Ziro out of jail." said Bane. "He was gone way before they arrived. It looks like we're right back where we started."

Gardulla said something, likely about being tired of paying a bounty hunter for this job.

"I'm kind of tired of being paid for this job, too." said Bane. "but not that tired. If you Hutt's ain't interested in knowing who's behind this and making it go away, I can take a hint."

But Gardulla stopped him.

"So, we doing business or not?"

Quinlan ran while Obi-Wan rode Peppermint through a field of hills and yellow dust clouds, looking for Ziro.

"I understand your tracking talent," said Obi-Wan. "but why wouldn't Ziro leave the planet?"

"Yeah, why not just fly away?" Peppermint added.

"My senses tell me that he's still here." said Quinlan.

"It's illogical. He knows he's being looked for here."

Quinlan started to feel the ground.

"Something is keeping him here."

"If we'd brought a droid, this would go faster." said Obi-Wan.

"I'm not a droid, but I do have animal instincts and a good sense of smell."

Suddenly, Peppermint whinnied fearfully and ran as a huge snake-like creature popped out from the ground and tried to grab them.

Obi-Wan jumped off Peppermint and ignited his lightsaber. Peppermint poked the snake with her horn, then Obi-Wan impaled the beast and killed it. Peppermint snorted hatefully at the beast.

"I've always hated snakes." she said.

"Are you two finished messing around?" Quinlan said. "We're trying to catch Ziro, remember?"

"In case you hadn't noticed, we nearly got eaten!" Peppermint said angrily.

Obi-Wan stepped calmly toward Quinlan. "Which way have they gone?"

"Well, since you're suddenly so interested in my tracking abilities," Quinlan crossed his arms. "they went this way."

"I never doubted you." said Obi-Wan.

And the two Jedi and the unicorn both ran and leaped as fast as they could to follow the trail.

Meanwhile, Ziro and his girlfriend rode through the swamp, stopping at a little house.

"Why are we stopping here?" Sy asked.

"I guarantee Gardulla is searching for us as we speak." said Ziro, opening the door. "So, I came to the one place she would never, ever show up."

The couple entered the house and met a very big, very ugly (well, uglier than the others) Hutt, who turned out to be Ziro's mother, and she was surprised to see her son there.

"Shoulda figured," said Mama Hutt, her voice extremely low in tone. "after all these years of never calling, you'd show up at dinnertime. You gonna sit in your stink or are you gonna pass the slime pods?"

Ziro was about to help himself to something, but then handed it to a droid.

"Never would have had to tell that to your brother Ehor, rest his soul." said Mama Hutt. She chomped on the morsel Ziro tried to. "So, sonny... what the heck you been doing the past few years, anyway?"

"Oh, a smidgen of this and a pinch of that," said Ziro. "using all of my facilities for the betterment of my fellow Hutts."

But Mama suspected Ziro was there for more than a simple family visit.

"What is it you want, sonny?" she asked her son.

"Can't a loving son just want to visit his mother on occasion?"

"When plebos fly out of my hump."

"Well, now that you mention it," Ziro stroked the side of his face. "I wouldn't mind swapping my swamp speeder for your starship."

"That's what I thought. Who's chasing ya this time?

"Gardulla."

"Aw, take it. Just make sure you bring it back full power."

"Thanks, Mama. I got some important business on Teth.

Meanwhile, Cad Bane and Todo were on a swamp speeder of their own, searching for the Jedi and the unicorn.

"Todo, how far ahead are the Jedi?" Bane asked.

"I don't know." Todo answered.

The bounty hunter groaned. "This is the last time I take one of these jobs."

But the bounty hunter didn't seem to notice who he passed right by.

"Huh. I would've thought my coloring would've stuck out like a sore thumb in these parts." said Peppermint.

"Looks as though we're not the only ones after Ziro." Obi-Wan said.

"Then we'd better find him quick. Before Bane does."

The Jedi and candy-corn journeyed farther into the swamp and came upon Mama Hutt's cottage.

"We must be cautious." said Obi-Wan.

Obi-Wan was about to press the button to open the door, but Quinlan crossed his lightsaber on the door and kicked it down.

"Vos! What the hay?!" Peppermint exclaimed.

"Vos, somebody lives here!" Obi-Wan added.

But Quinlan just ran in.

Obi-Wan and Peppermint looked at each other and shook their heads, thinking the same thing.

"You definitely weren't kidding about his level of crazy." Peppermint said. "I don't think even Anakin is that reckless."

"Perhaps he needs to have a child to look after to teach him to be more responsible."

"You really think a baby, even as smart as Princess Gabby, could tame him?"

"It's a possibility." Obi-Wan shrugged.

The human and equine followed Quinlan into the Hutt house.

"Ugh! Smells like someone died in here!" said Quinlan, holding his nose.

"Break in my house, will you, smart guy?" said Mama Hutt.

"Thousand pardons, madam." said Obi-Wan. "He hasn't mastered the concept of knocking."

"Or manners in general, really." Peppermint added.

"For that, I apologize."

Peppermint rolled her eyes. "I'll go work my magic." And she walked back to the door to use her horn's magic to fix it.

"I got trouble for you too, Mr. Fancy Pants." said Mama Hutt.

"No need." said Obi-Wan. "We're not here to harm you."

"That'll be a first for tonight."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning... First, my deadbeat son and his limp-lipped girlfriend come in and sponge me out of my starship. Then some slime sap and his droid charge and force me to give up the skinny on where Ziro's headed."

"Big hat?" asked Quinlan.

"Yeah. Chad something out for blood." answered Mama. "You want to kill my little boy too?"

"Oh, no, madam, but if we don't find him before Bane does," Obi-Wan began.

"Then Bane likely will kill him." Peppermint finished.

"Teth." said Mama Hutt. "Ziro's heading for Teth."

"We need to get to that jungle planet," said Quinlan. "We need to get there fast."

"And I have a very fast way to do it." Peppermint said, motioning to the silver horseshoes on her feet.

"Ha! Like you could beat a starship." Quinlan said.

Meanwhile, Ziro and Sy were headed up a mountain range.

"Are we close to your holo-diary, baby?" asked Sy.

"This way." said Ziro.

They soon came upon what looked like an altar of some sort. It was actually the grave of Ziro's father. Ziro pushed on a stone, and the grave opened to reveal a Hutt-sized mummy.

"I never did have the heart to tell Mama that Papa ran away, or that he died." said Ziro. "Some people are just happier when they're miserable."

"The Hutt Council records." said Sy, walking to a tablet that sat in the dead Hutt's arm.

"Every dirty deed those criminals have slithered through." Ziro confirmed as his girlfriend looked through the diary. "Worth a fortune, baby. Plenty enough to retire on."

"Aww, that's too bad. I still got work to do."

That was when Sy pulled out a gun and pointed it at Ziro. Ziro stammered in shock at the betrayal.

"But... but.. what about Solarine, the sunsets, y-you and me sharing a future?"

"Next time, you'll think twice about breaking someone's heart." Sy wagged a finger at him and then aimed her gun. "Oh, wait. There won't be a next time."

And she shot Ziro twice, and the purple Hutt collapsed to the ground, meeting his demise.

Bane soon arrived on Teth and found Ziro's body on the ground.

"Oh, I just hate it when someone does my job." Bane grumbled.

Todo looked at Ziro's father's body before reporting to Bane that the holo-diary was also gone.

"Oh drat."

That was when a ship started to fly in.

"Jedi."

Peppermint lay on the ground near where the ship landed, munching a carrot Obi-Wan brought as a treat. Horses did not seem to like the rations they typically carried.

Quinlan soon exited the ship.

"It's about time you got here." said Peppermint, smirking as she and Obi had beat him. "Told ya my way is faster."

The trio looked over the cliff. The Jedi used the Force, while Peppermint used her horn to transfer herself there (unicorns could use transportation spells with their horns, but those were only good for on-world travel.

"We're too late." said Peppermint as she walked up to Ziro's body and nudged him with her muzzle.

"Who could have done this?" wondered Obi-Wan out loud.

Peppermint's ears shot up again, and she looked in another direction, as did the Jedi.

"Bane." said Peppermint and Obi-Wan as they spotted the bounty hunter.

"Looks like we're both too late for the party." said Bane.

"So, this is not your handiwork?" said Obi-Wan.

"No, I wouldn't have made such a sloppy kill. Doesn't seem like much sense hanging around here or making any trouble between us."

"Are you forgetting how you held the Senate hostage? I may not be capturing Ziro, but you are going to prison."

"Well, now that you mention it, the Separatists are paying a million credits a head for a Jedi. Maybe more for a unicorn."

Peppermint made her horn glow and the Jedi ignited their lightsabers. Bane took off running, attempting to shoot the Jedi, who deflected the blaster fire. Peppermint attempted to use her magic, but only succeeded in turning various parts of the cliff into rock candy.

Obi-Wan and Quinlan kept going after Bane, but he shot down some of the rocks and nearly caused Obi-Wan to fall before he grabbed the edge and Peppermint rescued him with her horn's magic.

Quinlan took a more violent approach, beating Bane, only to get knocked over. Obi-Wan and Peppermint managed to help though by making Bane drop his weapons one by one. Obi-Wan even borrowed Quinlan's lightsaber after he dropped it. But, Bane made Obi-Wan drop it, grabbed his wrist and shocked him. That really made Peppermint angry. She tackled Bane and bit his tubes, ripping one of them right off with her teeth. But Bane used his rocket boots to escape, only for Vis to go after him.

Bane used a flamethrower to distract the Jedi, and managed to get to his ship and fly off before the Jedi could capture him, leaving them hanging from a cliff.

"I never did enjoy hanging out with you." said Obi-Wan.

"Need a lift?" Peppermint said, lifting Obi-Wan up first with her magic, but then whinnying in pain and anger as Quinlan pulled himself up by pulling on her tail.

"Okay, that's it!" Peppermint said. "Get over here!"

Peppermint started to chase after Quinlan, who ran like his life depended on it.

"Peppermint!" Obi-Wan shook his head. "For someone who makes sugar out of thin air, she has a rather violent temper."

And so, Obi-Wan ran after his unicorn with a new mission to keep her from killing Quinlan.
