Holocron Heist
Trapped on Felucia, surrounded by droid forces, fighting to survive. Most would call that the fight of their life, but the Jedi and clone army... they called that Tuesday. This time, Master Plo Koon and clone reinforcements have managed to blast a hole in the droid defenses and send gunships to rescue their friends on Felucia.
Droids were firing at Generals Kenobi and Skywalker as they deflected their shots with their lightsabers, and clones blasted back.
They were also aided by young Carousella Mareheart and Princess Gabriella.
Now that young Gabby had the Force, she was an even stronger fighter out in the field.
"Look out!" Anakin exclaimed as a fighter ship came right at them.
Anakin and Obi-Wan managed to get out of the way just in time.
"If that fighter got through, then our gunships can't be far behind." Obi-Wan said. "Prepare the troops to evacuate."
And sure enough, the gunships did arrive. Carousella and Gabby were ordered to get on board first, being the youngest fighters there.
"Ahsoka should have been back from her jungle patrol by now," said Anakin.
"I'll try to contact her again," said Obi-Wan. "Ahsoka, where are you?"
Ahsoka was using her lightsaber to deflect shots, and reported she was about six klicks east from the guys, and they had the enemy on the run.
"They're here to extract us. We're leaving." Obi-Wan told her.
"What? We can't retreat now, Master. I've broken through." Ahsoka replied.
"Move it trooper." Anakin order. "Come on, double time!"
"You heard the man, pick up the pace, slowpokes!" Carousella said, stamping her front hooves.
Obi-Wan told Ahsoka that she had to evacuate, as she was outnumbered.
"That is an order!" Obi-Wan said.
"Master Skywalker taught me never to let up when the tinnies are on the run." Ahsoka said.
"They are running back here to regroup with the main force."
Still Ahsoka refused to let up. Gabby rolled her eyes, thinking of every time her father or someone else told her to stay put and she disobeyed. Now Ahsoka was acting similar by refusing to go where she was told.
"Where's Ahsoka?" Anakin asked.
"Following your teachings, apparently." Gabby said.
"Is she winning?"
"For now." Obi-Wan said.
Anakin had the troops land the ship in front of the droids, and Carousella flew out of the ship, swooping in and picking Ahsoka up on her back.
"What are you doing?!" Ahsoka exclaimed.
"Saving your butt, that's what!" Carousella said.
"Get in the ship now," said Anakin.
"Can't you see their retreating?" Ahsoka said.
"They're about to overrun you, Ahsoka." Carousella said.
"You just can't see it." Anakin said, and this time he spoke to Ahsoka like a parent. "Now follow orders and get in the ship."
"Do as he says!" Gabby shouted from the ship, for once staying where she was told.
Carousella took a reluctant Ahsoka into the ship, and they managed to escape with barely a scratch. But, Anakin looked disappointed in his Padawan.
Later, Ahsoka was taken before a few members of the Jedi Council to discuss the incident caused by her behavior.
Gabby was hiding behind a chair in the Council chamber as she listened in. Sometimes, she felt a little jealous of Ahsoka. Anakin gave her a lot of freedom, sometimes more than he should. She got freedom too, but not as much as Ahsoka. Unlike her, Gabby had to be with a grownup or one of the older kids all the time, and she wanted to be able to do things on her own, but everywhere she went, people treated her like a baby. Sometimes, it really got on her nerves.
"Padawan Ahsoka, do you feel Master Kenobi's description of the incident is accurate?" asked Mace.
"Yes, my Masters." Ahsoka said guiltily.
"More to add do you?" Yoda asked.
"I know I was wrong. I just got caught up in my own success. I didn't look at the battle as a whole. I wasn't being disobedient. I just... forgot."
"Masters, this incident is my responsibility." said Anakin.
Of course Anakin tried to take responsibility. Being both Ahsoka's teacher and a father, he was under pressure to set an example and guide both of them in the right direction. Because of Ahsoka's advanced abilities, he forgot how young she was. It was the other way around for Gabby. To be fair, it was a big age difference between her and Ahsoka.
"Because of Ahsoka's advanced abilities," continued Anakin. "I forgot how young she is. I gave her more freedom than I should have."
Ahsoka looked down in shame.
"That may be," said Mace. "but it doesn't excuse what happened on Felucia. I think she needs some time away from the battlefield."
"On archive security, reflect on your actions you can, Padawan." Yoda said.
"Guard duty?" Ahsoka snapped, then quickly toned her attitude down. "For how long?"
"Longer now." Mace said. "As for your daughter, Skywalker, she may need some time away from the battlefield as well."
"What did I do?" Gabby said, popping out from behind the chair, startling the others.
"How long have you been hiding back there?" Anakin asked. "I thought you were asleep."
"You aren't in trouble, little one." Mace said. "We only believe you should have a break. You are a powerful fighter, but you still are a youngling and would benefit from some rest."
"Speaking of rest," said Anakin. "It's past someone's bedtime."
The Council members dismissed Anakin and his Padawan, and the older Jedi took his little girl to her room to put her back to bed.
The next morning, Ahsoka was taken by Anakin to the archive room.
"I'm sorry I let you down, Master." said Ahsoka shamefully.
"I know. I was a Padawan not that long ago." said Anakin.
Anakin introduced his Padawan to Madame Jocasta Nu, the lady in charge.
"So good to meet you," said Madame Jocasta. And Anakin left Ahsoka to begin guard duty. "Let's show you around."
And so, Madame Jocasta took Ahsoka on a tour of the archives.
"There is more knowledge here than anywhere else in the galaxy." said Madame Jocasta.
"Master Kenobi says there are even texts here that are forbidden to be read," said Ahsoka, looking around at all the shelves.
The librarian chuckled and said, "The archives hold a great many secrets, 'tis true." And they came across a round door, where Jedi Master Kit Fisto was walking to. "Beyond this door lies the holocron vault. The holocrons contain the most closely guarded secrets of the Jedi Order. Good morning, Master Fisto."
Kit smiled at his greeters, then waved his hand over a mechanical lock by the door, and it opened almost like magic.
"Can we go inside?" Ahsoka asked.
"Oh, I'm afraid not, my dear." said Madame Jocasta. "I haven't been inside myself for years. Only members of the Jedi Council are allowed access. Guarding the holocrons is one of the most important duties a Jedi can be given, Ahsoka. Do you think you're up to the task?"
Ahsoka thought about it and said, "Definitely."
Maybe guard duty wouldn't be as bad as Ahsoka thought.
Meanwhile, notorious bounty hunter Cad Bane was staring out his apartment window, quietly thinking to himself, when he received a transmission from the mysterious Sith Lord Darth Sidious.
"As I was saying, bounty hunter, I have need of your services." Sidious explained.
"I'm listening." said Bane.
"I need a Jedi holocron."
"To get a holocron, I'd have to break into the Jedi Temple." Bane pointed out. "It's impossible, not to mention deadly."
But Sidious knew how to get into the bounty hunter's head.
"Perhaps your reputation has been exaggerated." said the Sith Lord.
"I want a Rogue class starfighter with elite weapons, cloaking device, the works." said Bane. "Oh, and triple my usual rate."
"Your price is of no concern. I will also provide you with the means to get inside the temple."
"You've got a deal." Bane smiled.
Gabby sat in her room while Carousella went to help the grownups with going over how to handle the effects of their setbacks on Felucia. Even though she obeyed orders this time around, Anakin agreed with the Council and decided on his own that Gabby could use time away from the battlefield too. She was a strong fighter, but she was still a little girl, and she deserved a proper childhood.
But, as Gabby lay down for a nap, she felt something odd, and started to toss and turn a little bit before quickly sitting up with a gasp.
Gabby breathed heavily before looking at her teddy bear by her side.
"Oh, Teddy. I just had the weirdest dream." Gabby said. But then, she felt what she sensed while she was sleeping even as she was awake. It felt tingly, and hard to describe, but it didn't feel like anything good. And she didn't know yet, but Master Yoda felt it too.
Meanwhile, some of the Jedi including Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Yoda were looking over the results of their battle and strategizing.
"The setback at Felucia has effected our efforts in the whole sector." said Obi-Wan. "It'll take weeks before we can..."
Obi-Wan was interrupted as Yoda started to groan a bit.
"Master, Yoda, what is it?" Anakin asked, concerned.
"A disturbance in the Force." Yoda said. "Intruders there will be in this Temple."
That was enough for Anakin to rush to his daughter's room. He picked her up and refused to put her down for any reason. It wasn't that he didn't trust Carousella to look after her, but Carousella was only almost ten, and just one guardian wouldn't be enough. With Gabby still being unable to use the Force, Anakin wasn't so sure she would be able to protect herself if the intruders were to find her.
"Daddy? What's going on?" Gabby asked.
"Master Yoda just sensed something dangerous is coming here." said Anakin. "It may put you in grave danger. So until this threat is dealt with, I'm keeping you under my watch more than ever."
The Jedi didn't know for sure what the intruders were after, but his daughter was the first thing that came to mind for Anakin.
Bane was getting ready for his heist now, starting with making some adjustments to a service droid.
"You know, if you would just tell me what it is you're doing back there," said the droid, whose name was Todo 360. "I could probably be of some assistance."
Bane sighed and said, "Look, I am just doing some maintenance." He took out a small device that looked like a chip of some sort. "You have been having memory crashes."
"That is preposterous. I have no memory of any crashed" said Todo. "Oh my goodness. I have no memory of any crashes."
"Exactly." said the bounty hunter, placing the device into Todo's back and closing the hatch.
"Oh, no. I am doomed. Bane, you have to help me."
"Calm down. I'm done."
Bane walked to his computer and ordered Todo to get the door as the doorbell buzzed.
"I am a techno-service droid," said Todo. "not a butler droid."
"Can it, Todo." Bane said. "You are what I say you are."
Todo scoffed and reluctantly went to answer the door, where he met a strange new bounty hunter.
"I am service droid Todo 360." said the droid with a polite bow. "Who are you?"
"None of your business," said the stranger.
"Everyone is in a good mood today," said Todo sarcastically.
The stranger popped a visor from their eyes and took a look at Bane's screen.
"Who's that?" the stranger, whose name was Cato Parasitti, asked.
"Bolla Ropal, Jedi, out in the Mid Rim." said Bane.
"We going after him?" Cato asked
"Soon. Right now, we're stealing a holocron."
Bane pressed a button to display a hologram of the Jedi holocron.
"Impossible," said Cato. "The only place you can get a holocron is-"
"I know. Inside the main vaults of the Jedi Temple." Bane interrupted, pulling up another hologram. "Fortunately, our Sith Lord client has set us up with some help. For one, the map of the temple you're looking at right now. For another, a security chip that I've placed in my droid."
"I have been given all the technical data regarding security systems in the Jedi Temple." said Todo.
"Both the vent shafts and the vault itself are equipped with all kinds of traps and security measures. Todo can take them out, but we'll need help from someone inside the Jedi library. And that's where your talents as a changeling will come in."
Cad Bane motioned to a body on the other side of the room.
"He looks like a Jedi." said Cato.
"He was." said Bane. "His name was Ord Enisence."
Bane changed the screen to a map of the temple as he explained that Cato should be able to walk into the archives and monitor Bane and Todo without a problem. So, Cato touched the dead Jedi's body and took on his form as though he were still alive.
"Now that I am a Jedi..." said Cato, altering her voice to match Master Enisence's. "I can do that."
"Good." said Bane. He then took out some small devices. "You'll need these. They're ear commlinks so we can keep in communication."
"Mm, the vault is in the library, which backs onto the communications center. There will be swarms of Jedi nearby."
"We'll use that to our advantage."
"Even if you get into the vault, how are you going to crack that safe?"
"Let me worry about the safe. First things first. But watch out for a little girl growing flowers with a wave of her hand."
"What is so worrisome about a little girl?"
"Do not be fooled by her adorable appearance." Bane warned. "I have heard... rumors that the Jedi have a little troublemaker in the form of their first princess in their Order. She does not hold the typical Jedi powers. But she would make a very valuable capture."
Meanwhile, Anakin carried Gabby as he, Obi-Wan.
"Where do we start looking for these intruders?" Anakin asked. "What could they be after?"
"Besides me," Gabby added. "I'm not the only thing here that can be stolen. But if those intruders touch Teddy or any of my storybooks-"
"I doubt they've come to steal from a little girl, or to hijack starfighters," said Obi-Wan.
"What if they're after Carousella?" Gabby asked worriedly. "Lots of people would pay a lot of money for even a regular unicorn, but winged musicorns are supposedly extra priceless."
"That's one idea. But what can they get here that they can't get anywhere else?" Anakin pointed out.
"Lightsabers?" Gabby guessed. "Or what about those devices you use to train younglings to use their lightsabers?"
"Information as well," said Obi-Wan.
"The Jedi transmitter codes." Anakin said.
"Every piece of troop information in one place."
"And it's all in the east tower."
"The east tower communications center."
"What if they're just after Jedi garments?" Gabby asked.
Anakin laughed at that. "Why would intruders be after our clothes?"
"Maybe the materials are valuable somewhere." Gabby guessed. "Remember the mystery book you read to me last night? Someone stole a fashion designer's new fabric because it was valuable on a certain market."
"That's... actually a good point." Anakin said. "But let's head to the east tower, just in case they are after information."
"I'll monitor the perimeter defenses from the central security station." Obi-Wan said.
Carousella arrived just then with Vivian, her parents, and Vivian's lion cub-like little brother Avery. Carousella also got her brother Crescent to help.
"Guys, I brought help." Carousella said.
"We came as soon as we could." Crescent said. "Any clues on the intruders so far?"
"Not yet." Anakin shook his head. "We were just about to split up to look."
"That's actually why Carousella notified us." said Queen Carnatia. "Each of us in my family has a keen sense of smell and/or sight that may allow us to uncover clues humans cannot find easily."
"Well, we do need all the help we can get." said Obi-Wan. "Report to us as soon as you find anything relevant."
The animals all split up and started sniffing around the Temple to see if they could find anyone or anything suspicious. And the Jedi split up to check what the intruders could possibly have been after.
Ahsoka walked through the archives, feeling kind of bored, when she spotted Cato disguised as Master Enisence.
"Good afternoon, Master Enisence." said Ahsoka.
"Good afternoon, young one." said 'Master Enisence'.
"May I be of assistance?"
"No. Uh, no, thank you, my dear." said the disguised changeling. "I don't want to bother you."
"Oh, it wouldn't be a bother at all, Master." said Ahsoka, stepping in front of the changeling. "Things are slow right now. I could use something to do."
Cato stammered for a bit when Bane's voice came in over the ear commlink.
"Thank you. I'll be fine on my own." said the intruder, desperate to get away from the Togruta.
"You sure?" asked Ahsoka.
"Look, youngling." the changeling sounded annoyed now. "I said I was fine. Now let me go about my business."
Ahsoka sighed in defeat. "Can't do anything right these days." And off she went.
Meanwhile, Cato got to the computer and hacked into the system.
"All right, there's a weak point in the shield that Todo should be able to break through." Cato told Bane. "I'm beaming him the coordinates now."
Todo confirmed he had the info.
"I will jam the temple's scanners." said Cato.
Todo found the weak point, which he tapped and opened an opening big enough for Bane to pass through.
"In." said Bane.
"You're welcome." said Todo.
Meanwhile, in the east tower, nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first, but then the scanners seemed to lose their connection for a brief moment.
"What was that?" Gabby asked.
"I have no idea," said Anakin. He contacted Obi-Wan to report. "Master, we're in the tower. No intruders, but something just happened. All the scanners were behaving strangely for a moment."
"Yeah, something happened to the system down here too." Obi-Wan said. "It cannot be a coincidence."
"Arrived, the intruders have," said Master Yoda, entering the security station.
"But if they're not in the tower, then what are they after?" Obi-Wan wondered.
Carousella then came in.
"I haven't found anything, but Vivian and Crescent report no sign of intruders around Gabby's room, or the nursery." the musicorn said. "So, they're not after her or any other younglings."
"The communications center, perhaps, their target is." Yoda suggested.
"They must be in the central ventilation system." Anakin said.
Obi-Wan checked the system, and sure enough, there was a disturbance detected near the top of the south tower. It was a surprise to all of them, as the Jedi Temple's ventilation system had its own security system. A mouse couldn't get through them undetected.
"I'll meet you up there," said Anakin.
The Temple was now placed on high alert.
Bane made his way into the ventilation system with Todo following close beside him. The bounty hunter activated his rocket boots to fly down to a lower part where a fan would be.
"The control board for the fan should be on your left." said Cato.
Todo pressed the button on said control board, which stopped the fan, allowing the droid and bounty hunter to pass through.
"All clear." said Todo.
"Not quite," said Cato. "The fan you 're passing through has a security switch."
Todo looked around; he didn't see anything.
"Besides, we have already gotten past the fan."
But the droid spoke too soon, as he and Bane passed some sensors that let out a loud buzzing, and the fan was reactivated, sucking them in. Bane ordered Todo to turn it off, but Todo panicked, saying he didn't know how.
"Cato, do something." Bane ordered.
"I've got it from here," said Cato. A few buttons pressed, and the fan stopped.
"Sorry." said Todo.
Bane said nothing and just resumed going down until he reached the proper vent to go through next.
"Okay, Bane, the next part is relatively simple." said Cato. "Make your way down the shaft until you reach-"
"Excuse me," interrupted a voice that turned out to be Madame Jocasta. "I... I don't mean to disturb you, but, uh, the whole temple is on high alert."
"Thank you," said Cato, before she grabbed the librarian and knocked her out and then touching her to change to her form.
Bane and Todo soon came to a grate that led to a room with red laser beams.
"This is it." said Bane.
"Perfect. Let's go in." Todo said, but Bane stopped him before he could move even half another inch forward.
"No. Cato, come in." said Bane. "We are over the vault."
"Give me a moment to check out the security system," said Cato in Jacosta's voice.
"What's wrong with your voice?" Bane asked.
"Change of plans," said Cato. "I'm the librarian now."
"Hurry it up, Cato. We can't stay hidden for long."
Queen Carnatia met Anakin and Obi-Wan at the communications center to help them.
"Well, looks like this is where they broke in." Anakin said, bouncing Gabby up a bit as he nearly started to lose his grip on her.
"Fortunately, we'll have a less troublesome time." said Obi-Wan, opening the lock with the Force, which took the shield down.
Queen Carnatia was quick to notice Anakin's arms were starting to get tired carrying Gabby for the last few hours, that being proven as Anakin started to pant as he was struggling to continue holding his daughter.
"When was the last time you put Gabby down?" Obi-Wan asked.
"Before we learned intruders were coming." said Anakin. "I'm only doing this to..." He panted as he bounced Gabby up again. "Keep her safe."
"Anakin, why don't I take your cub so you can rest your arms?" Carnatia offered. "She can ride my back."
"Are you sure?" Anakin asked, unsure.
"I raise two cubs and lead an entire kingdom of wild beasts. I can handle a human cub." Carnatia carefully grabbed the back of Gabby's dress with her teeth and placed her on her back.
Carnatia went into the vent first and started to sniff the air, and sure enough, she smelled something that shouldn't have been in there. She snarled and positioned herself like she was ready to pounce.
"This way," said the viventia queen. And she guided the Jedi down. They used ropes to get down, while Carnatia flew with Gabby on her back.
"Which way do you think they went?" Anakin asked.
"The communication center is this way." Obi-Wan said.
Carnatia sniffed around again and said, "But the scent is that way."
"Wait..." Obi-Wan said. "That's towards the holocron vault!"
"What are holocrons?" Gabby asked. Being only three, too young to even be a Padawan, Gabby had not learned about every single thing in the Temple.
"They hold the most important Jedi secrets," said Obi-Wan.
"So, they're like diaries?" Gabby asked.
"Something like that." Obi-Wan said, picking up the girl. "But a holocron is useless without a Jedi to open it."
"Then why are they taking them?"
"No idea, but we must stop them, nonetheless."
Bane got closer and closer to the vault, but he heard the Jedi getting closer, and he heard the sound of a creature growling and snarling. He told Cato to hurry so he could get away from whatever was making that sound.
"That sounds like a beast of some sort." Todo said, sounding nervous.
"Don't worry about it." Bane said. "The child probably just has a dog."
And just as Bane and Todo were getting into the vault...
"Stop right there!" Carnatia growled, baring her sharp teeth at Bane, who pulled out his blaster.
"That's a big and odd-looking dog." Todo said, sounding frightened.
"I'm a wolfwing viventia." Carnatia snarled.
Obi-Wan and Anakin got in front with their lightsabers and deflected Bane's blaster shots while Queen Carnatia howled loudly to signal the other animals that she found Bane.
But, even with the Jedi there, Bane managed to grab a holocron.
"But the block back!" Gabby said angrily, only for Bane to aim his blaster at her.
"Hello, little princess." Bane said.
Carnatia quickly grabbed Gabby and put her behind something to protect her.
"Put the holocron down and come quietly, and maybe I won't tear you up." growled the viventia queen.
"You think a some big furball mutt is going to intimidate me?" Bane said unfazed.
Queen Carnatia growled again, this time sounding furious
"Uh oh. He called her two of the forbidden words." Anakin said.
The Jedi knew very well there were three words never to direct at Queen Carnatia: hideous, mutt, and furball. If anyone dared uttered those words, they were lucky if they lived to regret it.
Carnatia pounced and attacked Bane, making him drop his blaster. She scratched him in the face with her claws, bit his arm, and managed to rip some material from his jacket with her teeth, but Bane grabbed his blaster and shot her, making the viventia cried out like a hurt dog before running off.
"Queen Carnatia!" Gabby exclaimed, running over to the viventia queen while the Jedi went after Bane and the droid.
Fortunately, the queen was alive; it was just a flesh wound. Gabby kissed her head, and her healing magic made the wound go away, but Carnatia was still a bit woozy when she stood up.
"Are you okay?" Gabby asked.
"I'm fine, but that jerk got away. More importantly, are you alright?" Carnatia asked.
Gabby nodded.
Ahsoka had Cato, the changeling, in custody, and Madame Jocasta was okay.
Anakin, Obi-Wan, King Leofric, Carousella, and Masters Yoda and Windu arrived and found Gabby and Queen Carnatia there.
"Gabby, are you okay?" Anakin asked, immediately picking up his daughter.
"Yes, Daddy." Gabby said. "Queen Carnatia is okay too. I healed her."
"The intruder got away, but I managed to snag a piece of their garments," said Queen Carnatia, holding a piece of black material in her mouth.
"It was Cad Bane," said Gabby. "We both saw him take a holocron."
"What would Bane want with a holocron?" Anakin asked.
"I think the real question is who is he working for?" Carousella pointed out.
King Leofric sniffed the material his wife was holding, and they had their children sniff it too to get the scent in their heads.
Cato then told the Jedi that Bane's next target was a Jedi named Bolla Ropal.
"Who's Bolla Ropal?" Anakin asked.
"He is the keeper of the Kyber crystal," Mace explained. "the data on which can only be read by holocrons."
"What's on the list?" Ahsoka asked.
"A list of every known Force-sensitive child in the galaxy. The future younglings. The future of the Jedi Order."
"We have to warn him," said Obi-Wan.
"That's going to be hard to do." Mace said. "He's out of contact, somewhere in the Devaron system."
Anakin and Ahsoka decided to start seeking immediately.
"If this Cad Bane is still on Coruscant," said Obi-Wan. "I'll find him. King Leofric, would you be willing to help?"
"Of course, Master Kenobi." Said the lion viventia.
Carnatia was quick to point out that she was the one who had actually seen Bane, but Obi-Wan pointed out that Bane would recognize her too easily. Leofric would be strong enough to handle him as well, especially now that he had Bane's scent.
They also needed to find Bollo Ropal before Bane did.
