Corruption
A couple weeks went by since Remix came home, and Boba had grown used to his new home with the Skywalkers. He even got around to decorating his room, and his mother took him and Gabby shopping to spruce up his wardrobe, and they got a couple new outfits for Gabby too.
Boba started to grow more and more used to being around Jedi too. Gabby even began introducing him to some of her older friends. But, being the child of a famous engaged couple, Boba was overwhelmed by the paparazzi, and when he heard that there were going to be a lot of important people at the wedding, he became worried. So, Gabby got right to teaching him everything she could about acting like a prince. Since she was a princess, it only made sense.
"Remind me why I have to balance a book on my head again?" Boba asked as he walked through the hall of the penthouse, carrying the ring pillow in his hands and balancing a book on his head.
"As the ring bearer, you have to stand up straight and walk down the aisle with grace and poise." Gabby said. "Even when you're not carrying the pillow, you mustn't slouch. Princes have good posture and good manners. It's really tricky to remember at first. Not even Peppermint could sugarcoat that. But you'll learn."
But, even though plans for what the galaxy was calling the Jedi Royal Wedding, seeing as Padme was once queen of Naboo, and Anakin was the first Jedi in the Order who would be getting married since the Code was changed, there were still a lot of problems going on in other worlds, including peaceful planets such as Mandalore.
Having won neutrality for her people, Duchess Satine (who was also one of Padme's bridesmaids) now finds herself an outsider with little aid to her people. Supplies are impossible to come by, except on the black market, which has let Satine to face a greed-consumed world. Hoping to alleviate some of the tensions rising in the capital city of Sundari, Satine has called upon her friend Padme Amidala to make a diplomatic visit. And, Padme didn't come alone.
The Naboo cruiser landed on a platform where Duchess Satine awaited her visitors. Padme was the first to exit the ship, and she was followed by her two children, both dressed in blue as a sign of respect to the planet. And behind them were their horses. Despite Remix not being an official guard, Carousella had him fitted into one of the uniforms so he would blend in with her.
"Senator." Satine greeted with a curtsy.
"Duchess, it's good to see you." smiled Padme.
"Thank you for coming, Padme." Satine saw the children. "I see you've brought your little girl as well. And this must be the boy you adopted."
"I'm Boba, Your Grace." said the boy with a bow.
"I am very glad all of you could be here." Satine said, having the family walk with her. "I know our decision to stay neutral has caused distress in the Senate. But for many here, the fallout from your war has been too much."
"If your government has trade concerns, we can talk." said Padme. "Many systems have been affected."
The Duchess, the senator and her children all boarded a carriage ship.
"I assure you not everyone in the Republic has neglected Mandalore," Padme continued as she and Satine took their seats. "and there are those of us who would still vote to give you any help you require."
"The help we need now is opening trade routes so we may get supplies more freely." Satine explained.
"We are making progress in the Senate."
"If you need help with food, I can grow stuff with a wave of my hand." Gabby said. "Literally."
"Forgive me, Padme." said Satine. "I did not bring you or your children here to discuss politics. I had hoped to show you the new Mandalore."
The speeder then took the group into a tunnel, the horses riding in another vehicle.
"Not the typical Mandalorian welcome." Padme commented.
"Yeah," said Gabby. "Uncle Bail, I mean Senator Organa, joked that there'd be a parade waiting for us."
"More of a royal court, he said." Padme chuckled.
"I just wanted to greet you myself," said Satine. "before the others."
And when the speeder exited the tunnel, there were crowds of people cheering to greet the visiting senator and her children.
"Now this is a Mandalorian welcome." said Padme as she and Satine waved to the people.
"Just like we practiced, Big Brother." Gabby said, waving to the people like she taught Boba, and they waved to the people they passed by.
Gabby, however, added her own touch to saying hi to the people. Using her magic, she tossed lots of pretty flower crowns onto people's heads or grew flowers by their feet. It seemed to make a lot of people happy as she grew so many colorful flowers to brighten up their day.
"We are a people of tradition." Satine said. "And it appears your daughter is a princess of spreading beauty."
"That's my Gabby." Padme said. "Always looking for an excuse to make flowers grow."
Meanwhile, something suspicious was going on elsewhere on Mandalore.
A ship arrived at a shipping dock, and out came some green creatures in black and gold. They were unloading a bunch of crates with what appeared to be bottles of soda.
"Here comes the customs official." said one of the delivery guys.
The shippers were met by a human official.
"Ah, nice day here on Mandalore." said the one in charge of the delivery.
"It is." said the customs official. "Let's try not to ruin it."
"I don't get your meaning."
"Oh, I think you do." the official held up his tablet and said, "Your arrival isn't listed here on my schedule. So what exactly are you unloading on my dock?"
"Must be a clerical oversight." said the lead delivery guy. He placed some credits into the customs official's hand. "I'm sure it won't happen again."
The customs official tossed the credits in his hand.
"Normally there would be five times as many officers out here." He said. "They're off at the parade. Some big shots just arrived on Mandalore. You're lucky."
"Ah, luck has nothing to do with it." smiled the delivery guy.
"Well, just in case, deal with me directly in the future. Got it?"
"As you wish."
And so, the delivery was allowed to go through.
Meanwhile, at Satine's palace, Prime Minister Almec and other leaders of Mandalore were gathered for a meeting in the throne room.
Satine sat in her throne with Padme and her children standing by.
"Esteemed colleagues, leaders of Mandalore, friends," greeted Almec. "I'm afraid our neutrality has caused our people to suffer. The war between the Separatists and the Republic rages across our galaxy. It has caused trade routes to be closed to Mandalore and has forced us to turn to a black market filled with corruption."
"We know what is happening, Almec." said one man. "What will be done about it?"
"Mandalore should not need to pay smugglers to feed its people." said a woman.
The same man stood up. "It's not that we want to deal with smugglers. We have no alternative." he said before pointing accusingly at the woman. "I'm sure you and the Trade Federation make a profit whether our business is legitimate or not."
The woman then stood up and pointed at the man, angrily saying, "I resent that!"
Almec came between the two colleagues to break up the fight.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please order. Please." begged the Prime Minister.
"Prime minister Almec seems a bit overwhelmed." Padme told Satine.
"If you're volunteering your services as a negotiator," said the duchess. "Please, be my guest."
"Perhaps they will listen to a new voice." Padme stepped forward. "Ruling Council, may I speak?"
"Senator Amidala." said Almec. The others sat down. "The floor is yours."
"I hear your worries, your frustration, but the longer you argue the more your people suffer." said Padme. "You are right. New trade routes are essential to survival, but the black market is no substitute for legitimate and legal trade."
Gabby and Boba both listened as their mother spoke. She sounded very smart and confident in every word she spoke. The youngest child especially paid very close attention and took notes in her head.
"What would you propose, Senator?" Almec asked.
"The Republic can provide security."
"The Republic's own dealings with the black market far surpass Mandalore's" said the same man from the earlier argument.
"I agree." said the woman. "It's quite hypocritical of you to come here, a member of the Republic Senate, as well as fiancé to a Jedi, and lecture us about corruption."
"Hey, leave Daddy out of this!" Gabby said angrily. "Mommy wants to help you, and you're just looking for excuses to keep fighting."
"Bold words from a small, pampered little princess." said the woman.
"You take that back!" storm clouds boomed above Gabby's head as she looked ready to pounce, but Boba held her back and tried to calm her down to make the cloud go away.
That was when the people all started talking at once.
"For a planet that cares about peace, they sure like to argue." Boba muttered to his sister.
"You think?" Gabby said sarcastically.
"Silence!" Satine exclaimed. And everyone shut up. Satine stood up an stepped away from the throne. "I told Senator Amidala that Mandalore was not a part of the war, yet here I find a battle here in my own palace. I call this meeting adjourned. We will reconvene and allow cooler heads to prevail."
And with that, the duchess left.
Elsewhere, some big barrels were delivered to a warehouse at the shipping docks.
"Come on you worms," said the boss. "Get those barrels inside."
The barrels were rolled in and prepared to be emptied.
"What is this stuff?" asked a human worker.
"This stuff is slabin," said the boss of the operation. "a diluting agent. If we add it, we can make twice as much tea at twice the profit."
That drew some concern into the human male.
"Isn't it toxic?" He pointed out.
The green worker scoffed. "Only if the dosage is wrong. So get your mixture right."
Reluctantly, the worker activated the controls to pour the slabin into the tea mixture.
Later, the duchess and the Skywalkers were sitting at dinner together, where Gabby was helping her brother practice table manners.
"Tell me, Padme. How do you feel about the Republic's war with the Separatists?" said Satine.
"It's so complicated." said Padme. "As you know, in the Senate, the Chancellor says it's going very well, but my sources say otherwise."
"I told you the Chancellor's word was unreliable." Gabby said. "I'm telling you, there is something very off about him."
"And how does that make you feel?" said Satine.
Boba stuffed a piece of food into Gabby's mouth so she wouldn't blurt out anything she might regret, remembering from etiquette lessons that it was impolite to talk with one's mouth full.
"There are times I wish I could follow Mandalore's lead: neutrality, and not just in the war." Padme said.
"But the politics as well?" said Satine. "The contamination of greed reaches deep and far within the Republic: corporations, trade guilds, too many senators serving their own interests."
"There are still those of us who work to overcome the corruption and believe it to be possible." Padme glanced at her children. "For the sake of the children, we have to keep doing so."
"Enough of this dreary talk." Satine raised her glass. "A new hospital has opened. Tomorrow you and I shall visit, see true good at work. It will do us good."
The two women clinked their glasses, the kids imitating their actions with their cups.
The next morning, Satine, Padme, and the children went to visit the hospital. Of course, the horses came along as well. Satine was surprised when Carousella told her how she and her mother used to work together as therapy horses in children's hospitals.
"You'd be surprised what great therapy animals we equines can be." said Carousella. "Especially those of us that talk."
However, when the group arrived, they were shocked to see a large number of people going in. Many of those brought in were young children about Boba's age. Some were carried in on stretchers, others were brought in by their parents. The kids all looked nauseous and in pain in their stomachs.
Satine caught up with one of the medical workers pushing a boy in on a stretcher.
"Orderly, what's going on here?"
"I have no idea, Madam." said Orderly. "Dr. Zaz is handling the outbreak. He's inside."
The visitors entered the hospital and were horrified by the number of sick children in the hospital. There were many nurses tending to them, but the poor kids didn't seem to get any better. The kids were all coughing and moaning in pain.
"Oh no." Gabby said.
"You said it." Boba said, equally worried.
Carousella immediately got out face masks and put them on herself and the others in case whatever it was turned out to be contagious.
"What is happening here?" Satine asked Dr. Zaz, removing the mask so he could hear her properly.
"Duchess, I'm sorry no one has come to speak to you." said Dr. Zaz. "These children have been poisoned."
"How?" Carousella asked, removing her mask now that she knew it wasn't a contagious disease.
Satine approached a bed where a young boy lay down, holding his stomach in pain.
"We don't know. And it's not just here, I'm afraid. We've gotten reports from across the planet."
Satine felt the poor boy's head. He seemed very weak.
"Poor sweet things." Carousella said.
"Have you identified a cause?" Padme asked.
"Well, the children here all came from the same school." Dr. Zaz explained. "We're testing their food. If we find something, perhaps we can create an antidote. But it will take some time."
"Which they may not have." Satine said.
"I could just kiss them." Gabby said.
Carousella's horn unleashed a little purple dot of light, which she carefully touched to the boy Satine had been tending to. Slowly, the boy started to be groaning less.
"What are you doing, Carousella?" Padme asked.
"It's a spell I learned." Carousella answered. "It slows the effects of various poisons. But I can't be sure how long since I don't know what kind of poison it is."
Padme and Satine decided to have Carousella and Gabby stay and help as many of the children as they could for as long as they could. Remix went with the grownups. And Boba... to make sure Remix didn't get carried away. According to Carousella, Remix once turned what was supposed to be a simple tea party into a huge raving dance party.
Padme and Satine met with Prime Minister Almec.
"What if it's not a poison?" Almec said. "It must be Death Watch."
"I'm not so sure." said Satine. "In the past, the Death Watch attacks have only been directed at myself and the administration, not the children."
"They are terrorists." said Almec. "Perhaps the senator's visit has inspired them."
"Don't you try to pin this on my mother." Boba said angrily.
"Terrorists?" said Satine, sounding appalled. "Our minds should be on the sick children that are dying in the streets. What are you going to do to save them?"
Almec stood up from his desk and said he needed speak to the ruling council about this matter, and off he went. Satine, on the other hand, was less than satisfied.
"I refuse to believe that Death Watch has anything to do with this." said Satine.
"I agree." said Padme. "His concern for the children-"
"Was practically none. All he thinks about is politics."
Padme was disgusted that Almec prioritized politics over children. Being a mother, she knew all too well how terrified the parents of the sick children must have felt now. If that had been Gabby and/or Boba in that position, Padme didn't know what she would do.
"Well, we can't just sit here and do nothing." said Padme.
"My thoughts exactly."
Meanwhile, Gabby and Carousella were still working at the hospital.
Carousella cast her stabilizing spell on as many kids as she could, and Gabby kissed as many as she could. But Gabby did so much kissing she had to start putting on lip balm every ten minutes or so. And the spell was taking a lot of energy from Carousella.
"Okay, I need to rest." Carousella panted, laying on the floor. "Too much... spell casting... in one... shot."
Gabby pet her horse's muzzle. Carousella might have been one of the strongest guards from her kingdom, but she needed rest as much as any young equine did.
"There's too many for just us." Gabby said. "We should go help Mommy and Duchess Satine. It'll be easier to help the other kids if we can find an antidote that doesn't need magic... once you've rested a little."
Later, Satine was on her throne once again, speaking to her guards.
"Thank you all for coming. I suppose you're wondering why I asked you here. As my personal guards, you are the only ones I can trust to investigate this matter." Satine stood up and approached her guards. "We have little time. That is why I have asked for your help. Padme?"
Padme told the guards that each of them would be getting a special commlink and data pad as means of direct communication and locations they should investigate.
"This must be a closed-loop affair." Satine explained.
"Hundreds of children have been poisoned." Padme added.
"They are our children, and they need our help. This is a Mandalorian matter, and we must find out who dares poison our children. Thank you. Thank you all."
The guards all left, and then Carousella ran into the room with Gabby on her back.
"Mommy!" Gabby called.
"Gabby? I thought you and Carousella were helping at the hospital." said Padme.
"We were, but there are too many patients for just the two of us." Carousella explained.
"The poison slowing spell was making Carousella exhausted and my lips got chapped from too many kisses." Gabby said. "I used almost an entire stick of lip balm today. And it was brand new."
Padme decided it would be best to allow the kids to aid in the investigations. They needed all the help they could get.
"So, where do we start?" Boba asked.
"The schools." said Satine.
Padme, Satine, Gabby, and Boba all went to one of the schools to investigate. Of course, the horses had to stay outside due to the schools having a strict no animals policy.
It was lunchtime at the school and the investigators met Dr. Zaz in the cafeteria, escorted by the Superintendent.
"My pleasure, Duchess." said the Superintendent.
"We've cleared the food here." said Dr. Zaz. "None of it was tainted."
"What about what they ate yesterday?" Padme asked.
"Did you check the food's expiration dates?" Gabby asked. "Daddy once got sick from accidentally drinking bad milk."
"No, the menu of food is pretty regular here. There was no sign anything was expired either." Dr. Zaz said. "We would've caught something with our tests."
"What about their drinks, Doctor?" asked Satine.
"No, they drink fresh water. It's impossible for it to be tainted."
"Not the water. What about the bottled drinks?"
"Those are not part of the school's menu. They are allowed through an outside vendor." Dr. Zaz stopped a boy who walked by with a bottle of tea on his tray. "Excuse me, child. I must borrow your drink."
And the group left.
"You'll be thankful you didn't drink that later." Gabby told the boy as she left with the others.
Dr. Zaz allowed Carousella to sniff the tea, as Gabby suggested. Carousella took a big whiff of it, and she gagged at the smell of something that should not have been in there.
"That's not a good sign." Boba stated the obvious.
Remix didn't like the smell either.
"Ick! How can humans stand to drink whatever's in that?" Remix asked, covering his muzzle with his hoof.
"Whatever it is, it smells like expired beet juice!" Carousella said, sticking her tongue out in disgust.
Dr. Zaz brought the tea to a machine in a lab to be analyzed.
"How could this have happened?" Satine said, worried.
"See, this is why I stress the importance of checking the ingredients on packaged goods." Carousella told the human kids. "Stuff like this is exactly what happens when you don't watch what you ingest."
"It's not your fault," Padme told Satine.
"I appreciate that. However, for an outbreak of this size to occur, I'm afraid it's a sign of a much, much deeper seeded corruption than I had imagined."
"Duchess, we found something." said Dr. Zaz as the analysis was complete.
The others looked at the test results, which confirmed that the tea contained high levels of slabin.
"I didn't know slabin was lethal." said Satine.
"It usually isn't, but mixed with the tea and at this concentration, I'm certain it's the cause of the children's illness."
"That would also explain the bad smell." Remix said.
"The school must have an import log, correct?" said Padme.
"Uh, yes. I believe so." said the Superintendent.
"So we should be able to find out where the tea came from."
"Well, then let's get to the docks." said Satine.
The adults, the two children, and the horses went to the docks to search for the import log.
"Everything's here, Satine." Padme said as they looked at the log.
"Everything except the records for the tea shipments." Satine said.
"I'm not trained as a guard," said Remix. "But from all those stories my dad and uncle have told me, erased records are usually a sign of shady business."
"Remix is right." said Padme, looking at the records. "It looks like the school's import log has been erased. There's no record of an outside vendor."
"And there's currently no given reason for the superintendent sneaking off." Carousella said, striding toward the superintendent.
"Superintendent, hold it right there!" Satine ordered.
The Superintendent stopped and turned to the duchess for a moment. "I'm actually on my way to the hospital. I have to go."
"Stop him!" Satine ordered her guards, but Carousella already bit the Superintendent on the back of his shirt, pulled him to the ground and stood above him. Anyone smart would know not to make any sudden movements when an angry horse stood right above them.
"Carousella, pull him up so we can interrogate him face-to-face." Gabby said.
"Yes, Princess." Carousella said, and she held the Superintendent in a magical aura so he couldn't escape.
"Tell me what's going on here," said Satine. "or else my guards as well as Princess Gabriella's will not be as conversational as I am."
"Satine." Padme tried to step in, but Satine held her back.
"Padme, please." Satine looked angrily at the Superintendent. "where did you get the tea?"
"Please, I never meant to harm anyone." sighed the Superintendent. "I just- I needed to cut costs. The school's budget was too low."
"The school has received sufficient government funding."
"Look, they offered me a great deal. I could keep some money for myself too, but I didn't know that the drinks were poison."
Gabby lifted herself up on a plant so she could face the Superintendent directly.
"So, all this because you were greedy?" Gabby said angrily. "You're sick."
"I am not the only one making money off this operation." said the Superintendent. "There are others more guilty than I am."
"Was Death Watch involved?" asked Satine.
"Death Watch? I don't know. I... I dealt with a middleman, an importer. His name is Siddiq. He works for a shipping company not too far from here."
"Tell us where." Carousella said, pulling the Superintendent closer to her face.
The adults met with Saddiq, leaving the kids outside in case the guy turned out to be dangerous.
Siddiq just casually leaned back in his chair and rested his feet on the desk.
"Sure, I bribed the school official." said Siddiq, not sounding the least bit remorseful. "What's the problem?"
"What you've done is illegal." said Padme.
"Beyond these stars, there's a war going on. As long as my company imports goods, most people turn a blind eye to anything else."
"We are not most people, Mr. Siddiq." said the duchess.
"My corporate contracts protect me, Duchess, so I'll play your little game. Look, I'm sorry there are sick children. I truly am. But I'm just a messenger."
"Where do you get the tea?" Satine demanded.
"From Mooga. The Commerce Guild controls it." Siddiq sat upright in his chair and logged into his computer, insisting that he had nothing to hide.
Siddiq pulled up the shipping records from Mooga and showed the screen to the ladies.
"And a customs official reports these to the government?" asked Padme.
"As far as I know." shrugged Siddiq.
"Are these all for the ones bringing the tea?" Satine asked.
"No, I'd have to narrow that down." And the duchess glared at him. "Okay, okay, no problem."
Siddiq pulled up another screen that showed that a new shipment was being brought in later that very night.
That night, Padme and Satine, along with some royal guards, snuck down into the docks to investigate. Gabby and Boba came too, but the horses had to wear dark cloaks so their colorful manes and coats wouldn't stick out like Christmas lights.
"I must say, when my kids and I came to visit, I hadn't pictured any of us in such an informal setting." said Padme.
"I'm just glad to be out of those uncomfortable clothes." Boba whispered to his sister. He was not used to wearing formal attire.
"Yes, well, from what Master Kenobi tells me," said Satine. "during your tenure as queen, you became quite familiar with such excursions."
"You'd be surprised how many crazy adventures her daughter gets in." Carousella said. "You should've seen the time we accidentally switched places."
"Yeah. Uncle Obi-Wan got stuck in Carousella's body." Gabby said. "And he had almost no control over so many things."
The duchess chuckled and said, "Hard to believe my Obi-Wan would find himself in such a position."
"He had it easy. I had to learn to walk on two legs and pick things up with fingers." Carousella said. "Not to mention, I didn't have my wings or magic."
"So yeah, it wasn't like learning to be a proper princess." Gabby said. "But we did have to learn about each other's positions.
"One can only survive the rigors of courtly formalities for so long." Padme said.
"Amen." Gabby said.
"Especially when you're not used to them." Boba said.
"We are of the same mind." Satine said.
The group continued to quietly sneak onto the docks, and just like Siddiq said, there was a shipment being delivered.
"The smugglers." said Satine.
"We'll soon find out." said Padme.
"Shall I call in more security?" Satine's guard asked.
"No, let's wait and see what transpires." said Satine. She looked and pointed out something. "Look, a customs official."
Everyone watched as the customs official greeted the alleged smugglers, saying her was there for an... inspection, and was given money as a bribe. Satine and the others were disgusted by this.
"How can one operate with such impunity?" Satine said.
"I used to live around people who did that and literally killed for a living." Boba said. "It's a lot darker on the other side than you could imagine."
"I need to find out how far up the chain of command this corruption goes."
"How do we do that?" Gabby asked.
Satine summoned the captain of her guard and explained to him what they saw.
"I'm sorry, Duchess, but what you're saying, it's impossible." said the captain.
"Impossible?" said Padme. "We witnessed it with our own eyes."
"It's true. I wasn't even wearing my sunglasses at the time." Remix said. "It was clear as day."
But the captain didn't believe it.
"Bribery of a customs official at the shipping docks? I'm afraid not. The docks are a highly secure area, free of dangerous criminals."
"But not free of corruption." said Satine. "The most dangerous weapon in the galaxy is money, Captain."
"Smuggling does not take place on my watch." said the Captain.
"Well, apparently, it did when you weren't watching." Carousella said. "I myself am a royal guard and graduated top of my class. I know a smuggling operation when I spot one."
"Yeah, what about when you're not watching?" Gabby added.
"I'm always watching, Princess." said the captain.
"Do you mean you never sleep?" Carousella sassed. "That would explain the grumpiness."
"Were you watching as children were dying?" Satine asked the captain. "Who was watching then?"
"Duchess, with all due respect-"
"No, Captain." Satine stood up and approached the captain directly. "If you want my respect, you will arrest these criminals and stop stalling."
"Stalling?"
"Why else would you not be down there with a patrol unit making arrests, unless you're involved."
The captain rolled his eyes with a sigh. "All right. We'll see what's going on."
"Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed." said Boba, noting the captain's attitude.
"Or didn't go to bed." Gabby said.
The patrol unit as well as Satine and her friends arrived at the docks. However, there were two Mandalorian guards standing at the warehouse door.
"Satine, what are those guards doing there?" Padme asked.
"Did you order them here?" Satine asked the captain.
"Duchess, I've been with you the whole time." the captain pointed out.
"Stay behind the guards, children." Satine told the kids.
The adults approached the guards, and the captain ordered them to let them into the warehouse.
"We're under strict orders not to let anyone in." said one guard.
"Do you know who this is?" said the captain, motioning to the duchess.
"I command you, open these doors." said Satine.
The guard tried to attack Satine, but the captain stopped him, and punched the other guard in the face, knocking both guards out before ordering his men to arrest them. Then, the captain opened the warehouse, and inside there were crates of the same contaminated tea.
"Hold it right there." said the captain.
The smugglers took out blasters and started to shoot. Carousella jumped in and protected everyone in an energy bubble.
The guard captain got out his gun and started blasting at them. The horses jumped in to help as well, blasting their magic.
Boba, on the other hand, covered his ears, not liking hearing the sound of all the blasters. As he heard them, he began to feel awful memories fill his head. The Battle of Geonosis, being trapped in the care of Aurra sing, and his past actions destroying a cruiser and nearly getting his sister and her friends killed.
At one point, however, the captain got shot down and dropped his gun. The guards got him to safety, but the smugglers were still shooting.
Padme had the other guards move some boxes to act as a shield while she took the captain's blaster and fired while the guards pushed the boxes, and the guards went in and fought, but the smugglers kept fighting.
"Cover your ears!" Remix said, making his horn glow.
"Uh-oh." Carousella said. "Protect your ears!"
Padme and the others covered their ears, and Remix used his secret weapon. The whole warehouse shook as Remix blasted loud pop music at crescendo dynamic. But the smugglers didn't cover their ears in time. Some were thrown into the walls and knocked out by the powerful soundwaves.
"Wow." Gabby said. "Music really makes a surprisingly effective weapon."
"Indeed." Satine agreed.
"Captain, I want you to burn down this warehouse." Satine ordered after the smugglers and workers were arrested.
"Excuse me?" said the captain, thinking the duchess was crazy. "But there's evidence-"
"Burn it down, or I'll consider you a part of this conspiracy, captain."
"You heard her, men." the captain told his men. "Burn the warehouse."
The royal guards took out their flamethrowers and burned the warehouse down to the ground. Of course, once it was down, Gabby used her magic to prevent the flames from spreading.
Later, Padme and Satine met once again with Prime Minister Almec.
"It wasn't death watch, Prime minister. It was a group of black market Smugglers." Padme explained. "They were diluting the
drink with slabin. What they didn't count on was, the process would make the drinks poisonous."
"And what about the sick children?" Almec asked.
"I ordered shipments of the antidote for all the schools and hospitals." said Satine.
"I'm glad this is over."
"No, I'm afraid it's not over." said Satine, getting up from her seat. "The corruption we witnessed is intolerable. Payoffs, police unwilling to
comply, my government fooled...How does this happen?"
"I'm sorry. I'm setting up a committee to look into it." Almec promised.
"Children nearly died because our government cannot be counted on."
"I assure you this will not go unpunished."
"I'm counting on you, Almec."
It was soon time for Padme and her kids to head home. Satine walked with them back to their ship.
"I'm troubled, Padme." said Satine.
"You heard prime minster Almec say he'll investigate." Padme said.
