Change of Heart
After a failed attempt on Jedi Master Mace Windu's life, the Jedi Cruiser Endurance crashed on Planet Vanqor, and now Jedi Generals Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker were staging a rescue mission to hunt for survivors.
"We'll contact you as soon as our search for Admiral Kilian and Princess Vivian is complete." Mace told the rescue team who saved the clone survivors.
As far as the Jedi knew, Vivian didn't get to an escape pod in time, thus leaving her on the ship. They only hoped her survival skills included being able to survive a fiery crash.
The Jedi exited their hyperspace rings and came up on the crash site.
"Let's hope Admiral Kilian and the command crew are still in one piece." Mace said.
Anakin looked out from his starfighter at the crash site.
"Hmm, looks pretty bad, but the bridge seems to be intact." Anakin said.
"Set down behind the cruiser," Mace instructed. "We'll approach on foot."
Anakin landed his ship and hopped out. R2 beeped nervously.
"You're not kidding, little buddy." Anakin chuckled. "I don't like the feel of this place either."
"Your astromech is programmed to feel?" said Mace, approaching the younger man.
"R2 is kind of a... special case." R2 popped himself out of the ship and on the land. "He's got a lot of personality, that's all."
"You encourage it too much."
"You seem to think Gabby's adorable, and she's got a lot of personality." Anakin said, then became worried again. "I hope she's okay."
"If I know anything about Gabriella, she is possible to catch, but not so easily kept in one place for very long."
The two Jedi and their astromechs started to scan the area.
"R8, start scanning the area for signs of life." Mace told his astromech droid. "And calculate an entry point to the cruiser."
Anakin started shouting out for Gabby and Vivian.
R2 beeped.
"You're right, R2. It doesn't look good." Anakin said. "Gabby! Vivian! Are either of you here?"
Suddenly, there came an unsettling sound from behind. A sound of creatures growling. R2 beeped frantically as he sensed something was following them.
"A bit jittery, isn't he?" said Mace.
"He must have seen something." said Anakin
"Come on. It looks like R8 has found an entry point."
The Jedi continued their search, completely unaware that two gundarks were following them.
"There would have been a command crew on board to try and land this ship," said Anakin. "Admiral Kilian and then at least three navigational officers."
"Commander Ponds stayed as well." Mace said.
The two men walked into the wreckage and looked around. There were parts that were on fire, exposed wiring, and a lot of unstable pieces too.
Suddenly, R2 spotted something, which he called Anakin over to see.
"What did you find, little guy?" said Anakin. He came to see what R2 found: a clone's dead body. "Mace, over here!"
Master Windu approached the body and flipped it over, he found a black spot near the man's heart that indicated he didn't die in the crash, but by execution instead. R8 spotted another one. He died the same way.
"We know the assassins were after me." said Mace. "Perhaps they returned to look for my body. We need to get to the bridge and find Admiral Kilian. Send the droids to scan for any survivors down here. Maybe the killer missed one."
Anakin knelt down to the droids and said, "I know, there's a lot of interference, but do your best."
"Skywalker!" Mace called.
Anakin and Mace then began climbing up a shaft toward the bridge, where they found even more exposed wires, and well as more dead clones who had been executed.
"I don't see Admiral Kilian or Commander Ponds." said Anakin.
"They must have been sucked into space when the cabin lost pressure." Mace hypothesized. "Sadly, Vivian may have suffered the same fate."
Anakin became worried again. How were they ever going to explain this to Vivian's family?
Mace contacted Captain Silver to let him know there was no sign of any life down there, and instructed them to take the survivors back to the hospital station.
Gabby had eventually cried herself to sleep on board Slave I, and the bounty hunters were glad to finally have some silence. However, Gabby later woke up to find that they had landed on another planet. Gabby heard the bounty hunters leave the ship and saw a chance to escape. So, she used one of her magical plants to open the door and carefully snuck out.
"Daddy?" she said, sensing her father's presence on the planet. She began running and calling for her father, only to feel herself being grabbed and held tightly.
"Where do you think you're going, little one?" said Bossk as he held the girl.
"Let me go!" Gabby struggled
"Why should I? You just won yourself front row seats to witness the death of two Jedi."
Gabby then knew she had to warn her father and honorary uncle. She screamed for them through the Force, and even screamed IT'S A TRAP! out loud until Bossk covered her mouth with his hand.
Anakin and Mace started to climb down from the bridge, when Anakin spotted...
"Is that a Mandalorian helmet?" Anakin approached the helmet. "What is that doing here?"
Mace looked down at a dead clone and thought. Clone cadets... Jango Fett...
"Boba!" Mace concluded as Anakin picked up the helmet, a familiar voice shouting "Daddy!" in the distance
"Gabby?" Anakin said, picking the helmet up.
"Anakin, no!" Mace shouted. "Drop it!"
Mace quickly made Anakin drop the helmet just before it exploded on the rubble of the ship, much to Gabby's horror.
"Eww! Disgusting!" Bossk whined as he tried to get rid of the saliva Gabby spit in his hand.
"Daddy, no." Gabby whimpered.
"Mace is dead. Are you happy now?" Aurra asked, though not sweetly.
Boba didn't answer at first, as he got distracted by Gabby crying for the supposed loss of her father.
What have I done? Boba thought. He had just done the same thing Windu did to him, and to a little girl who had done nothing but be kind to him, no less.
"Stop crying!" Aurra scolded. But, Gabby didn't stop crying. Aurra groaned at this.
"I wanna get off this planet now." Castas said. "This place is crawling with gundarks. And besides, we got these hostages to drag along with us now."
Four hostages, they had, including Gabby. Admiral Kilian, Commander ponds, and a navigational officer.
Bossk carried the little girl, wincing as Gabby continued to scream and cry.
"Ugh! How did Skywalker get this thing to stop crying?!" He tried bouncing her, trying to guess what would quiet her down. "Shh! Quiet down!"
But, Gabby only screamed louder, making Boba cover his ears.
"Did we really have to take this smaller brat with us?!" Bossk whined, as his ears were hurting too, and he struggled to hold the squirming child.
"This extra baggage will fetch us a hefty sum from the Separatists." Aurra said.
"Well, it's a lot of trouble for not enough payout, if you ask me." Castas said.
Boba threw down his binoculars in anger and said, "You haven't even done anything! I've taken all the risks."
Castas grabbed him and threatened to hit him. "Quiet, runt. Yowch!"
Castas jumped in pain as he was poked in the rear by a cactus that popped out from the ground. Even though Gabby was angry at Boba, she didn't want to see him get punched.
"I can't keep holding this brat!" Bossk said. "You take her!"
Bossk forced the kid into Castas' arms.
"I don't want her!" Castas tried to give her back to Bossk, but he tossed her back, and then Castas gave her to Aurra.
"That's it! Boba, since you like her so much, you take her!" Aurra said, forcing the youngest bounty hunter to take the princess.
Gabby seemed to scream a lot less in Boba's arms. The other bounty hunters were relieved that the loudest part of the princess finally ceased. But, her weeping didn't stop.
"Count Dooku will pay us well if we bring back the Jedi's head," said Boba.
"Dooku might pay us for killing Windu." Aurra said. "Then we're looking at a profit."
Aurra started to board a bike.
"Now, relax. Boba is right." She said. "To get paid, we need proof of Windu's death. And if we killed Skywalker, we can ask for double."
Castas liked the sound of that.
"Bossk, you and Boba take care of our 'guests' while we're gone." Aurra said.
Bossk began dragging the older hostages onto Slave I. Gabby was still crying though.
Boba felt something inside him snap. Supposedly, he just succeeded in killing Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker. But, Boba forgot to take into account that Anakin was Gabby's father, and by terminating him, he just did the same thing that was done to him, and to an innocent toddler, a little girl. He felt tears sting his eyes as he held the girl in his arms.
"I'm sorry, Gabby. I'm so sorry!" Boba wept as he hugged Gabby tightly. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry!"
Boba kept saying sorry so many times he lost count before Bossk told him to hurry up and bring the princess on board for restraining.
R2 rolled around the bridge, looking for his master, when he suddenly bumped into a certain viventia princess.
"R2! Boy am I glad to see you." Vivian said, feeling dizzy from a slight concussion she received in the crash that had knocked her out cold for a bit. It was a miracle the bounty hunters hadn't found her under all the wreckage. She was a little scratched and dirty, but she was alive and could move.
Vivian followed R2 on his search for the Jedi and started to sniff around until she got the scents of two Jedi she recognized.
"This way!" Vivian said. "Anakin? Master Windu?"
"Vivian! R2! Over here." said a familiar voice.
Vivian and R2 looked in horror as they saw Anakin and Mace trapped under rubble. Both of them flew down very carefully and landed near them.
"Good to see you, buddy. You too, Viv." Anakin said.
"Are you okay?" Vivian asked.
"I... can't move." Anakin coughed. "Is Gabby with you?"
"No, but I think I know where she is." Vivian said.
R2 tried to move some of the rubble off of Mace, but the ship started to shake.
"Careful, R2." Anakin warned. "I'm afraid the whole bridge will collapse. I need you both to go back to the fighters and call the Temple for help, okay?"
"Yes, Anakin. We promise." Vivian said for both her and R2.
"Go get help. We'll hold out as long as we can. Go on, you two. Go on." said Anakin weakly before passing out.
Vivian and R2 looked through an open space on the bridge and saw two bikes with two bounty hunters on them. And with her keen eyesight, Vivian spotted their ship, and Gabby being taken onto it.
"R2, you contact the Temple for help." said Vivian, baring her teeth. "I'll take care of our visitors."
Aurra and Castas arrived at the rubble and started to search around the place for Windu and Skywalker's bodies. Vivian and R2 both stayed hidden as the two bounty hunters were climbing up. They had to slow them down so R2 would have time to get to the fighters. So, R2 grabbed a piece of sheet metal and threw it down.
"Look out!" exclaimed Aurra. And she and Castas ducked out of the way.
"Oh! This place is a death trap." said Castas.
"When I hired you, I didn't realize that you were such a coward." said Aurra.
"Well, I don't want to be next."
R2 then made a door shut in front of the two bounty hunters.
"Blast!" Aurra cursed.
Vivian could hardly keep from laughing at the bounty hunter's displeasure. R2 beeped as though giggling.
Mace woke up from his spot in the rubble and saw Anakin close by.
"Skywalker, are you alright?" Mace asked.
"Yeah, I'm alright. Except I can't move." grunted Anakin. "Can you get free?"
Mace tried using the Force to carefully move some large parts off of them.
"I already tried that." said Anakin, coughing. "You'll bring the whole place down on us!"
"Well, how do we plan on getting ourselves out of this mess?" Mace asked.
"Don't worry. I already sent R2 and Vivian back to the fighters to call for help. I'm sure they have everything under control."
"I'm just saying, I didn't know there'd be all this climbing involved." Castas scoffed.
"Say one more word, you get a blaster bolt through the brain." said Aurra.
R2 and Vivian saw Aurra and Castas climbing up the shaft.
"Let's play a game of Drop a Box." Vivian said, pushing some crates closer to the hole.
R2 beeped happily, and together on the count of three, they tossed down the boxes.
"Ugh, this is no good." said Castas. "If we can barely survive down here, Windu must have been killed in the blast."
That was when the bounty hunters heard the sound of growling.
"What's that sound?"
Suddenly, Aurra was pounced by Vivian, who began using her sharp teeth and claws to fight the bounty hunter, who tried to shoot her with her gun, only for Vivian to bit her and make her drop it. Then, Vivian also attacked Castas and tore up his clothes, and bit off part of his pants, exposing his underpants with seahorses on them. That attacking gave R2 enough time to get to the fighters, but not enough time to call the Temple for help.
Aurra recognized Vivian as a princess from Mythiria, and figured a magical creature, a royal one especially, had to be super valuable. So, she knocked Vivian unconscious, and she and Castus dragged her on board Slave I, where they soon found a fighter was on the move. They thought it was Mace trying to escape, but it wasn't. It was actually R2, who was trying to get to the Jedi Temple to get help.
Gabby was horrified when she saw Vivian being thrown into the cell, tied up and unconscious.
"Vivian!" Gabby cried.
Aurra, however, noticed tear stains on Boba's face.
"Were you crying?" Aurra asked, not sympathetically.
"No!" Boba said, wiping the stains away, knowing Aurra would not respond pleasantly if she knew he'd been crying.
The bounty hunters jammed R2's communication and started to chase R2 around, so Gabby tried to slow them down. Aurra seemed to have forgotten just how strong the princess was in her magic. Then some vines grabbed the wheel and made Slave I start spinning around like crazy, causing the hunters to get thrown all around in the ship.
The bounty hunters all got knocked silly, even as they got into space. By the time the ship finally stopped spinning, R2 already escaped on the hyperspace ring.
"Well, there goes a fortune. Nice going kid," said Castas sarcastically.
"I didn't do anything this time!" Boba said angrily before a flower punched him in the nose. "Ow!"
"Ugh! It must have been that little brat." Aurra concluded, looking at the door where the hostages sat.
"How could we forget she has magic?" Boba wondered.
"Relax, she doesn't have Jedi powers." Aurra said. "All she can do is make flowers grow."
"But Windu will be back here with a fleet!" Castas said. "He'll hunt us down."
"You can count on that." Gabby smirked, that clear in her tone of voice.
"Don't believe the runt. The Jedi don't carry grudges." Aurra said. Then she went into the holding cell. "But I have ways of... motivating him. We'll make Windu come to us next time, on our terms. Now let's get out of here. I want to regroup."
Boba looked back at the hostages, mostly at Gabby as she was crying again, looking at her friend as she was unconscious. He felt so guilty now. He wasn't sure what to do or if there was even anything he could do.
R2-D2 managed to make it to the Jedi Temple and found Master Plo Koon and Ahsoka in a meeting with a bunch of holograms of various Jedi Council Members. But he fell down and landed flat on the floor.
"R2?" Ahsoka helped R2 up, and the astromech droid started pushing another out of the way so he could get his message through.
Ahsoka had to break up the fight between the two droids before the destroyed each other.
"R2, what's wrong?" Ahsoka asked the droid.
"Ahsoka, you know this droid?" asked Master Plo.
"It's Anakin's droid, R2-D2."
"Well, then, R2, deliver the message you so obviously need to communicate."
R2 plugged himself into the Temple and played back a recording of Anakin telling him and Vivian to get help.
"Prepare my ship." said Plo Koon. "We shall leave immediately."
And he and Ahsoka rushed out to go save their friends.
Meanwhile, Anakin and Mace were still trapped on the bridge as it was falling apart.
Mace looked at the damaged Mandalorian helmet and pulled it over to his hand with the Force.
"Whose helmet is that, anyway?" Anakin asked.
"It belongs to a bounty hunter I killed on Geonosis." Mace explained. "By the name of Jango Fett."
"You mean... the clone template?"
"Yes. Strangely enough, he had a son, or at least a clone he regarded as a son. His name is Boba Fett."
"I remember now. Obi-Wan listed him in his report on Kamino."
"Boba was on Geonosis when his father died. He watched as I killed him."
"Ah..." Anakin began to understand why Boba responded the way he did, even though he disagreed with his actions. "That would complicate things."
"Indeed."
More and more of the ship was exploding. There wasn't much time left for the Jedi to be rescued.
"Your astromech and Vivian have both been gone too long." Mace said, coughing. "They must have failed to deliver your message."
"R2 will come through." Anakin said.
By some miracle, the Jedi gunships arrived just in time.
Master Plo and Ahsoka rode in one together and flew close to the bridge where the trapped Jedi were.
"There, in the bridge! I can see them." Ahsoka said.
"Ahsoka, hold the ship steady." Plo instructed.
Ahsoka and her surrogate father used the Force to hold the ship steady while the Wolffe Pack jumped in and got the generals out as quickly and carefully as they could.
"We're losing it, sir." said the pilot.
Fortunately, Commander Wolffe and another clone managed to get Anakin and Mace out of the wreckage, and they jumped into the ship, cut the lines, and flew out of the way of the falling bridge as it hit the ground and exploded.
Anakin and Mace were placed on stretchers to be taken to receive medical attention.
"Some pretty serious burns, but nothing a night in the bacta tank won't fix." Ahsoka said, patting her master's leg, making him wince in pain. "Oh, sorry."
"We were lucky to arrive when we did." Plo said.
"Guess we have R2 to thank for that."
R2 beeped.
Anakin looked around. "Where's Vivian?"
R2 beeped and showed a recording of Vivian saying that she would take care of the bounty hunters.
"What if the bounty hunters have Gabby?" Anakin gasped, dreading that thought.
"Not to worry, Skywalker." Plo said. "We will do everything we can to locate your daughter and bring her home safely."
No amount of time in the bacta tank would be enough to heal Anakin's pain of how much he missed his baby girl right then and there. He couldn't even be bothered to remark that R2 got more praise than Anakin ever did from Mace.
