A Test of Strength

After an exciting adventure of retrieving their crystals, six Jedi younglings and a disguised pop star were ready to take their first step into a larger world.

While the ship was on its way, the younglings were watching as Petro practiced his lightsaber skills. He did a little spin trick that knocked the ball against the walls and to the floor.

"I call that move the Whirlwind of Destiny." said Petro.

"Showoff." said Zatt.

Ahsoka clapped to get everyone's attention and asked them to gather around. So they did.

"You have all successfully passed The Gathering and harvested your crystals." said Ahsoka.

Gungi vocalized happily.

"So when do we start to build our sabers?" Petro asked.

"Place your crystals on the table." Ahsoka instructed. "Your lesson begins now."

Carmine and the younglings placed their crystals on the table.

"May I introduce you to architect and lightsaber designer Huyang?"

In came a droid.

"These are them?" said Huyang, looking at the students. "I swear they get younger every expedition. All have passed the Gathering?"

"Yes, sir." Ahsoka said.

"Are you sure?"

"But he's a droid." said Ganodi. "You expect us to learn from a droid?

"Many years I have been on this ship teaching many a Jedi before you, and I will continue teaching many a Jedi after you." the droid defended. "Call me what you want, but inside my memory banks, I contain a record of every lightsaber ever made and the Jedi who fashioned them."

Huyang set up a hologram to show the younglings examples of complete lightsabers.

"Which will you choose? A simple grip? The curved approach? One inlaid with the bone of the Cartusion whale, pastillion ore, or black onk?"

Carmine especially was astonished by all the different styles there were to choose from.

"Well? From Battles of Rashfind to the Peacekeeping of Parliock to our very own Clone Wars, the lightsaber is a Jedi's only true ally."

"Not a very social ally, though." Carmine whispered to the younglings.

"But how do they work, hmm?" said Huyang, picking up a crystal and inspecting it closely. "Yes, you have brought me crystals, but they're all useless unless you give them life."

"So, they're like seeds." Carmine hypothesized. "But, I get the sense they need something other than water and sunshine to grow?"

"Indeed. Do you know how to awaken the Force within the crystal?" None of the younglings did, and neither did Carmine. "No? Then I suggest you listen and learn until you think of a question this droid cannot answer."

"Were there ever any Enchanted Jedi in the Order after Serafina Starling? Besides my family, I mean." Carmine asked.

"No, there were not."

"Why is that?"

Huyan paused for a moment. "That is the one question I cannot answer."

Ahsoka looked at Carmine. "Now I know where Gabby gets her talkativeness from." said Ahsoka.

Huyang then looked at Gungi.

"A wookie. Rare you are to the Jedi. Proud your people must be. Unique, just as your lightsaber will be. Hold out your hand, Wookie." Huyang held out his hands, and Gungi placed his hand in them. "Describe what you see your lightsaber to be."

Gungi started to describe it, but Huyang stopped him.

"No, no, no, not what you imagine, but what you feel in your hand. Concentrate. What will make you strong in battle and humble in retreat? What connects with your Force?"

Gungi concentrated and felt his Force until he knew what his lightsaber was made of.

"Ah, yes, wood. Not a common choice. And only wood from the brylark tree is as strong as metal. Let me see. Where would we find that all the way out here," Huyang walked towards some storage bins and drawers. "far from anywhere, deep in space?"

Huyang began searching through various drawers on two sides at the same time, using some extra arms he had on his back. Then, he pulled one drawer out all the way and demonstrated to the younglings how he built a lightsaber. They were all very impressed.

"It is my job, before you leave this ship," said the droid, holding up the display lightsaber. "you will have everything you need to build your lightsabers and the knowledge of how to do it. So let us begin. There is much more work to be done.

What none of them knew then was that another ship was following them.

Carmine was the last one Huyang saw to figure out the material for his lightsaber.

"I have been told of your origins, Carmine." Huyang said. "It was not that long ago your brother constructed his first lightsaber. But very long ago, your great grandmother was a very determined young woman, and your father... he was as determined as she."

"I know I'm older than the others here, but my father always said there's no age limit to start learning something. Better late than never." Carmine said.

Huyang had Carmine give him his hand, and had him feel what his lightsaber would be made of. To Carmine's surprise, the Force told him his was made of brass. He recognized that metal. He remembered from a science class as a child, it was a metal that was not magnetic, but it was strong, and in music school, he'd seen a lot of brass instruments. Trumpets, tubas, and trombones were some of the most basic he knew.

"Brass, an even rarer decision." Huyang said.

"Could it have something to do with me having power over music?" Carmine asked. "Brass is a material for some musical instruments. And I can play just about any instrument."

"Perhaps it does. After all, when Young Serafina Kingston built her lightsaber, hers was made of gold. She had golden power of healing as well as a heart of gold."

Soon after all the younglings had the materials for their lightsabers, they got right to building with the power of the Force. Petro was in a pretty big rush to finish his, though.

"What's the rush, Petro?" Zatt asked the human.

"With this lightsaber," said Petro. "I'm going to challenge Obi-Wan Kenobi to a duel and kill Grievous."

Katooni and Ganodi both giggled at that. Huyang then inspected Petro's lightsaber and found it to be built to a point where if he lit it, the only thing left would be his crystal.

"Start again, and this time, please follow the diagram."

The others kept working. Ganodi was having a bit of trouble.

"Remember, quiet your mind and concentrate." Ahsoka said. "The design will become clear."

Ahsoka guided the Ganodi and Katooni to trust the Force.

Carmine, however, approached building a little differently. Like the others, he did trust the Force, but he added a musical touch to his process. If there was one thing he learned in music school, it was that different types of music had different effects on the mind. And classical music was a popular choice among a more scholarly group, and was known to improve concentration and memory. Using a bit of magic, he immersed himself in a bubble of musical notes to the classical piece Peer Gynt Suite No. 1. Op. 46: 1 Morning Mood by Edvard Grieg.

As Carmine felt the song running through him and tuned out all distractions, he was able to relax and concentrate the Force, constructing his lightsaber slow and steady. And finally, it was put together.

"YES!" Carmine exclaimed.

Then the ship rumbled.

"What was that?" Katooni asked.

"It wasn't me!" Carmine said, raising his hands.

"I don't know what it was, but everyone hold on. Carmine, you're in charge." Ahsoka said. And the Togruta left.

Ahsoka approached another part of the ship where R2-D2 was, and the togruta asked the droid what happened.

R2 beeped rapidly.

"Where?" said Ahsoka, and she looked outside to see a flying saucer. "Oh, no."

The saucer began firing at the Jedi ship.

"Ugh, they're aiming for the hyperdrive." groaned Ahsoka. "Get us out of here!"

R2 tried to get them out of there, but they couldn't get out fast enough.

Ahsoka then decided to go check on the younglings.

In all the commotion, the room where the younglings were shook a little, and Carmine tripped.

"Did anyone see where my glasses landed?" Carmine asked, feeling around the floor. "Ugh! I really need to consider contact lenses."

Ganodi looked to the floor and picked something up.

"Here they are." said the Rodian.

"Thanks."

Carmine put his glasses back on, but became worried when he saw more clearly how scared the younglings were. Byph even hugged Carmine as he was frightened.

"What's happening?" asked Katooni.

"We're being boarded." said Huyang.

"Here? Why?" Zatt asked.

"I don't know." Huyang then took out a small container from his chest and ordered the younglings to give him their crystals.

Since Carmine finished his lightsaber, he just hid his weapon. Petro, however, only pretended to put his crystal in the box.

The ship was soon boarded by pirates. Ahsoka soon came by the younglings, Carmine, and Huyang.

"Who's attacking the ship?" Ganodi asked, Carmine holding her as she was scared.

"Pirates." said Ahsoka.

"Pirates? They'll kill us all."

Byph held tighter to Carmine now.

"I can't exactly carry and comfort everyone." said Carmine. "I've only got two arms."

Carmine had never had to handle this many scared kids at once before.

"Perhaps we should hide in the ventilation shaft." Huyang suggested.

"Follow me." said Ahsoka, removing a grate from the floor.

"Hiding is for cowards." said Petro. "We should stand and fight."

"Courage and recklessness are two completely different things, Petro." said Carmine.

Huyang went into the vent first.

"Huh, we're gonna fight, just not the way they expect." said Ahsoka.

Suddenly, sparks came from the wall.

"Time to go." Ahsoka said.

The younglings all went in. Carmine was last before Ahsoka, who then replaced the grate. The vent was a little small for Carmine, but he was flexible enough to squeeze through.

Carmine and Ahsoka both shushed the others.

"Hondo says find the kids and bring 'em to him." said a pirate."

"Dead or alive?" said another.

"Yes."

Ahsoka crawled very quietly through the tunnel.

"We must have courage, young Jedi." she told the others. "Ganodi and Zatt, I need you to get to the cockpit, find R2, and secure it. The rest of you, take Professor Huyang and seal yourselves inside the hold, and wait for my command."

"What are you going to do?" Petro and Carmine both asked.

"I'm going to reroute enough power to the engines so that we can break free of the pirate ship's hold on us. Okay?"

"Wh-what about the pirates already on board the ship?" Katooni pointed out.

"Once the docking tube is ruptured, when the ships pull apart, a vacuum will be created, which will suck the pirates off our ship and into space."

"Will we be sucked into space?" Ganodi asked fearfully.

"Ahsoka just said the cockpit and hold, where we'll be, will be sealed." Carmine said, calmly placing a hand on Ganodi's shoulder. "We'll be safe."

"Yes. And they will both still have air." said Ahsoka. "Do not, and I mean do not engage the pirates. Your only job is to stay hidden. Do you understand?"

The others nodded.

"And Carmine, with your experience as a parent, you'll need to keep everyone calm. Now go."

"Okay, kids... follow the leader." Carmine said, using a gentle tone he used whenever Lamenta was afraid, as he crawled through the tunnel with Huyang.

Unfortunately, Hondo soon arrived on the ship.

"I smell profit!" Hondo exclaimed as he sniffed the air. He laughed. "Nice, juicy, fat, warm profits."

Hondo met some of his men who were searching the ship.

"Well?"

"We've secured the ship," said one of Hondo's men. "but she seemed deserted."

"Imbecile! That is the oldest trick in the book. The runts are probably hiding in the ventilation system."

"Oh. Right. Didn't think of that."

"Why does that not surprise me?" Hondo sighed. "All that matters is you find the younglings and bring me the crystals. If anything gets in the way, kill it."

"But, boss, they're just kids." said another pirate.

The other pirates were unfazed by that fact. Hondo was less than pleased.

"They're just kids." Hondo repeated. "When will they learn?"

Hondo touched the pirate's shoulder with his staff.

"In case you lack motivation, remember that on the black market, these crystals are priceless."

The pirates opened one of the grates.

"We can't fit in there." said a red one.

"Smoke them out." Hondo ordered.

"You heard the boss."

The pirates removed more grates and threw smoke bombs in.

While Zatt and Ganodi made it to the cockpit, Carmine and Huyang led the others to the hold.

However, as they got closer to the hold, another smoke bomb dropped in and made everyone except Huyang start coughing.

Huyang opened a grate above him, only for his wrist to be grabbed by a pirate.

"Unhand me, brigand!" Huyang demanded as he was held against the wall.

That was when Carmine popped out, his glasses on his head as he rubbed the smoke from his eyes.

"What's Skywalker doing here?" said one pirate surprised.

Carmine placed his glasses back on.

"The name is Jinn. Carmine Jinn." Carmine corrected, placing his glasses back on. He kicked the pirate that held Huyang with a kick he learned in martial arts class. "Back away from the children!"

"After they give us their crystals." said a pirate.

"Not gonna happen." said Carmine. "Now, I'm going to count to three, and you'd better be out of here. One... two..."

The pirates just laughed at Carmine as he acted like he was their father.

"Okay, the hard way it is. Three!" Carmine said. He quietly told the others to cover their ears. And they did.

Carmine took a big breath and vocalized at a crescendo dynamic, shrieking in high C, a very high note. The pirates couldn't cover their ears in time, and they all collapsed to the floor as the high note was irritating their hearing and giving them excruciating headaches. And while the pirates were distracted, Carmine quickly got the kids out.

"Come on! Hurry!" Carmine exclaimed, counting each child as he pulled them out and had them move in front of him, Huyang guiding them the rest of the way.

"What was that?" Katooni said.

"Song is sound, and sound is vibration." Carmine explained. "Played loudly enough, it makes an effective weapon."

"Look, we can keep running, or we can stand and fight." said Petro. "and show these pirates we're not afraid."

"I cannot approve of such action." said Huyang.

"Neither can I." Carmine crossed his arms.

"Besides, I have been damaged and cannot aid you in battle."

Byph said something.

"Petro's right," said Katooni. "It's our only choice: fight or be killed."

"Right now, I need to keep you safe." Carmine said. "If anyone's gonna fight, you're not doing it unsupervised."

So, Katooni, Petro, Byph, and Gungi got to work. Katooni and Gungi found some laser training balls and set them to blow. With Carmine overseeing, the younglings placed the balls together in a bundle. Meanwhile, Byph acted as live bait and lured the pirates to the room. Carmine made sure all three of them got into the other room in time.

They left the door open just a crack to see what was happening.

"Here, kiddie, kiddies." sang a pirate, entering the room. "You can come out now. No one's gonna hurt you."

Katooni hit a button and asked Zatt to close the door to the training room.

"Katooni, where are you guys?" Zatt asked.

"No time to explain." said Carmine. "Just close the door."

Zatt had R2 close the door, and as the pirates were wondering what was going on, the lightsaber training balls activated and began floating into the air, shooting lasers at the two pirates. This gave the younglings time to move, only to find Hondo and more pirates.

"We can't make it." said Katooni. The pirates looked ready to take them down. "There are too many blocking the hold."

Huyang managed to close the door to block the pirates coming behind them and seal the door shut.

"Well, children, you have put up quite a fight, but playtime is over." Hondo said. "Now, hand over my crystals and no one gets hurt... much."

"Those crystals don't belong to you." Carmine said, stepping in front of the children.

"Skywalker, you look different." Hondo said. "Since when do you wear glasses?"

Carmine rolled his eyes. "I'm not Anakin! I'm Carmine. His twin brother?"

"Hmm. Skywalker never mentioned a twin."

"Well, he doesn't approve of child endangerment, and neither do I."

That was when Ahsoka popped in and Force-pushed Hondo's men into another hall against a door.

"Hondo, the Jedi Council will not take kindly to this attack." Ahsoka said.

"Ahsoka, how will they know who is responsible if there is no one left to tell the tale?" Hondo said.

"You seem less hospitable than our last meeting."

"My mood is based on profit, and today I am in the mood for crystals."

"You know you could just get a job in a jewelry shop, right?" Carmine said.

"You want the crystals?" said Ahsoka, taking out her lightsabers. "Come and get 'em."

While Ahsoka engaged the pirates, Carmine and Huyang began taking the younglings to safety... until Huyang had his head shot off by a pirate. That motivated Carmine to pick Petro and Katooni, the first younglings he came across, up in his arms and run as fast as he could to get them to safety, Byph and Gungi running close by with Huyang's head and arm that were shot off as the rest of his body limped along.

Carmine placed Katooni and Petro down and closed the door.

"We're all in the hold, but Ahsoka's still out there fighting the pirates." said Carmine.

Zatt tried contacting Ahsoka, and he was able to let her know that the others made it to the hold.

"Then what are you waiting for?" asked Ahsoka.

"But what about you?" said Zatt.

"Do it!"

Zatt hit a button and got their ship unstuck from the pirate's. But as the pirates were sucked into space and the jump to hyperspace was made, Ahsoka got sucked with the pirates.

"Yes, we did it!" Petro cheered. "They're off the ship."

Byph and Gungi, however, held parts of Huyang, who was damaged.

"Oh, Professor." said Katooni with worry.

"Bring him here. I'll fix him." said Zatt.

"You should have seen Ahsoka." said Petro. "She took them on all by herself."

"Where is Padawan Tano?" Katooni asked.

Ganodi pressed a button and tried to get in touch with Ahsoka. No answer.

Oh no.

Luckily, Ahsoka was not dead. Unluckily, she was captured by Hondo and his crew.

"You have cost me greatly today, young one." said Hondo. "And since you lost me so much profit, I am left with no choice..." he had Ahsoka knocked unconscious. "But to turn you into profit. Good night."
