Worries & Promises

Anakin and Gabby fell in love with Julieta's food at dinner.

Anakin ended up having a second helping of soup. War time did not allow him much eating time. Some days, due to stress or being in battle for who-knows-how long, he ended up forgetting to eat or not getting a chance to, sometimes starving to the point where he almost collapsed. And after the stress he went through, the taste of a new food that was made by an amazing cook was really helpful.

"I'm not sure whose appetite is bigger, Camilo's or Anakin's." Mirabel said.

"War time doesn't exactly make eating enough easy." Gabby said. "And Daddy usually gave the extra rations to me since I'm a growing child."

"Yeah, that's part of it. But also 'cause I've never tried anything so good before." Anakin said. "You're a great cook, Julieta."

"Gracias." Julieta smiled. "You're so kind. And I can see you've raised a wonderful daughter."

"He's the best daddy ever." Gabby smiled. "My big brother's great too. And we can't wait to meet our new baby brother or sister."

"I can imagine your excitement." Camilo said. "I remember how excited I was when I found out Mami was having a baby. Now I have the best little hermano ever." He ruffled Antonio's hair.

"I remember when Mirabel was born." Isabela said.

"Remember how tiny and cute she was?" Luisa chuckled, making Mirabel's face turn red.

"You should've seen Gabby when she was a baby." Anakin said, ruffling his daughter's hair. "The day she was born was the happiest day of my and Padme's life. Besides our wedding day and the day we adopted Boba."

"What kind of name is that?" Dolores asked.

"I have no idea." Anakin said. "Before I met him, I only knew of boba as a type of milk tea with tapioca balls in it."

"Maybe it was his birth daddy's favorite treat, so he named him after it?" Gabby shrugged. "I mean, we have friends named Peppermint, Strawberry Sundae, and Sugar Cane."

"Good point. Or maybe it means something in Mandalorian or wherever his birth father was born."

"Maybe we should ask Boba how he got his name. I know my name comes from your middle name being Gabriel, and Mommy was named after her great grandmother. And Carousella got her name because she looks like a merry-go-round pony."

"Or it could've just been the first thing that popped into his head." Mila said. "Everyone gets their names from somewhere. Pedro was named after Papa's father, Rosella was named after my abuela on mom's side, and my parents named me Milagro because they'd tried to have a baby for five years and began to think they'd never be pregnant, but when they did, it was a miracle."

"And Milagro is actually the Spanish word for miracle." Alicia finished.

"When Mariano and I have a daughter, we plan to name her Alma, after Abuela." Dolores said.

"That's so sweet." Gabby said.

"I wonder if Mila will name her kids after her parents." Camilo teased.

Bruno coughed as he nearly choked on his drink by the thought of his daughter having kids when she only went on one real date with a guy he hardly knew himself.

"Relax, Papa." Mila rolled her eyes. "We haven't even talked about marriage, much less having kids."

"Talk about being overprotective." Anakin chuckled.

"Says the man who considered putting me back in a crib when I was three." Gabby said.

"Hey, it was right after a bounty hunter threatened many children, including you." Anakin said.

"You also made me wear a helmet everywhere and share a seatbelt with you."

"It's a father's job to protect his babies." Anakin crossed his arms.

"I'm half of Mommy too, you know. Strong woman. And Carousella's taught me martial arts."

Anakin sighed. "I know, I know. But remember, now that the whole galaxy knows you're half-Jedi, you're a bigger target than ever."

"I knew that risk when I decided to tell the secret, Daddy." Gabby said. "But I'm gonna be queen someday. I have to learn to handle things myself. I know I'm only six now, but I won't always be, and it's never too early to learn."

"You have a very smart girl there, Anakin." Alicia said.

"Runs in the family, I guess." Anakin said. "You should see my twin brother Carmine. He can play any instrument you give him."

There was still so much the Skywalkers wanted to see, so the Madrigals let them spend the night. Seeing as they currently had no one living in the nursery right now, Anakin and Gabby were allowed to sleep there.

Anakin, however, couldn't sleep. He kept worrying that he was going to have a nightmare again.

Quietly, Anakin left the room and got himself some warm milk, hoping it would help him sleep. But, it didn't make him sleepy. So, he headed back to the nursery and stopped when he looked at Gabby on the bed, bundled up under her blankets, cuddling Teddy.

Anakin looked at Gabby as she was fast asleep, probably dreaming about riding Carousella through a land made of candy or dancing the lead in a big recital. Two of her favorite dreams.

"I promise you, Princess, no matter what happens, I'm going to keep raising you and loving you." Anakin whispered. "I don't even know anymore if my dreams of your mother dying in childbirth are just my nerves, or a vision like when my mother died. But, I do know I won't be the only one affected by losing her. I don't know how I'd ever make it without her. You and the new baby will be all I have of her. I guess... I worry that if I lose my wife, I'll lose my babies too. I can't let that happen."

Even though Gabby was asleep, part of Anakin could feel that she could hear him. He gently sat on the bed and came beside his daughter. He pulled out a photograph he kept in his pocket. A family photo the family had taken earlier that year on the anniversary of Boba's adoption. It had become a tradition the Skywalker family began on the day they adopted Boba, taking a new family photo as a way of welcoming him into their home and their hearts. And when Carmine's family came, they were in the next photo, and with Qui-Gon revived, he was in this one.

Anakin remembered he and Padme told Gabby what would change and what would stay the same before they adopted Boba. One of those things that would remain the same was that Gabby would always be their very first child. Anakin might not have known about Gabby until hours before her birth, but that didn't stop him from being afraid to lose her. He loved her so much and was always close to her. They were practically best friends, an inseparable father-daughter duo.

Anakin felt tears come to his eyes as he kissed his sleeping little girl's head and gently stroked her soft hair, it matching the softness of Padme's.

"You're my little miracle, Princess." Anakin whispered. "I didn't have nearly enough support, hardly any in fact, when I lost my mother. If it comes that my nightmare is real, I will be there for you and your brother as I always have. No matter what happens, how much I love you and our whole family will never ever change."

Anakin lay down and gently pulled his daughter closer to his chest, and closed his eyes, slowly slipping into sleep.

As if by some miracle, this time, Anakin did not have any nightmares as he slept.
