Two Gifts, One Broken Mirror
In another world, unlike the Galaxy we visited before, an entire town was getting ready for a celebration of their own.
In this land, called the Encanto, the land was ruled by the magical Madrigal Family. It all began about fifty-three years ago in a quaint little village, where lived a young couple, Alma and Pedro Madrigal. Once, they were very happy, and soon were blessed with triplets. But, their home was attacked shortly after the babies were born, and the Madrigals were forced to flee their home. Though many joined them, they could not escape the dangers that followed. And then, Pedro Madrigal sacrificed himself to save the lives of his family and their village.
Alma was absolutely crushed by the loss of her husband, and it seemed all hope was gone. But then, she was given a miracle through a beautiful golden candle that would never go out... or so she thought.
You see, after the family was given the miracle of a safe haven and their magical house called Casita, Alma's children received magical powers known as their 'Gifts' on their fifth birthday, and so did each of their children on their fifth birthdays... all except for one. Julieta, the oldest triplet, had three daughters, and the youngest daughter, Mirabel, was the only one who did not receive any magic.
Because Mirabel did not receive a gift, her grandmother Alma, as well as many in the entire Encanto, began to isolate Mirabel and treat her like she wasn't special. Mirabel worked really hard to prove she was still part of the family and didn't need a gift, but nothing was ever enough. What made things worse was when her Uncle Bruno, the youngest of Alma's triplets, had a terrible vision that she would either save or destroy the miracle.
It was only by support from her twin cousin Milagro, a.k.a. Mila, Bruno's oldest daughter, who refused to use her gift when she saw Mirabel didn't get one, that Mirabel was able to keep her head up. The miracle did end up breakinng, and it turned out that it was because Abuela Alma was so afraid to lose her miracle that she pushed everyone to believe they had to earn the miracle by serving their community, using their gifts to the point where it hurt them. But in the end, Mirabel ended up restoring their magic when she and Mila finally made amends with their grandmother.
Almost three years had gone by since the miracle was restored, and tonight was another gift ceremony. Tonight, there would be new gifts for not just one, but two Madrigal children. Bruno's twins, and Mila's little sister and brother, Rosella and Pedro Madrigal. And, tonight would also be Mirabel's first time hosting and presiding over the ceremony.
Sadly, the Madrigals were now missing and mourning one family member. Abuela passed away six months ago, and the Madrigals missed her terribly. It was really hard for the youngest twins, as they'd only gotten to know her for a very short time, and had barely any clear memories of her. It would be really hard for the rest of the family with this being the first Madrigal gift ceremony without her, but they knew she would have wanted them to go on with the tradition, and she gave her last words to both sets of twins in the Madrigal family.
"Gift or no gift, each of you is a miracle, and I couldn't be prouder of how you have all grown. I love you, mi vidas." Abuela said before she closed her eyes for the last time.
Rosella twirled in the beautiful white dress made for her, her mother Alicia trying to get her to stand still so she could tie the white ribbon around Rosella's low ponytail. Pedro, on the other hand, seemed nervous as Bruno helped him with his vest.
"What do you think my gift will be, Mami?" Rosella asked, jumping up and down in excitement when her mother finished her bow.
"Whatever gift you get, it will probably be something fitting with all that energy you have." Alicia chuckled, then she looked at the clock. "Speaking of which, it's almost time for the ceremony."
Pedro just grabbed his green security blanket and pulled it over his head.
"Pedro? What's the matter?" Bruno said, concerned.
Over the last couple years, Pedro, the younger twin and baby of his family, showed that he got really nervous around strangers and large crowds. In preschool, he always hid somewhere instead of playing with the other kids, and when he did try to talk to anyone, he found his voice got really small. His very intelligent sister Mila took a look at every side and diagnosed that he was either extremely shy or suffered from anxiety.
Pedro wasn't even sure what his passion was. He wasn't good with designing like Mirabel, he wasn't super smart like Mila, or super spritely and energetic like his twin sister. He was also afraid of a laundry list of things. Spiders, the dark, snakes, cacti (an incident with Isabela's plants), thunder and lightning, bugs, frogs, heights, and loud noises. That wasn't even half of the list. Sometimes, he was even afraid of Rosella, who was always jumping out and being full of surprises.
Rosella could be pretty loud when she was excited, which was a lot, especially when she found musical instruments.
Fireworks boomed outside, scaring Pedro to the floor as he hid under his blanket.
"Pedro, it's okay." Alicia said, kneeling down. "It's just fireworks."
"I'm scared to get my gift." Pedro whimpered. "What if my gift is bad and scary?"
"Pedro, how would a gift be bad?" Bruno asked.
"People are scared of your gift, Papi." Pedro said. "What if my gift is worse? What if I grow sharp claws or turn into a werewolf?"
Bruno quickly understood what Pedro meant by his fear of having a bad gift. He himself still struggled with his own gift from time to time. Nothing could prevent him from having negative visions from time to time, and some people still didn't seem to listen when he told them he didn't make the future happen, he just reported it. He knelt down and slowly took the blanket off his son's head.
"Pedro... it's true, my gift isn't perfect. I do sometimes see a future people won't like, and there's nothing we can do about it. But, that doesn't mean I'm a bad person. Everyone struggled with their gift at some point, including Mila."
Pedro looked up at his father in disbelief.
"But Mila's a genie. She knows everything." Pedro said.
That was when there was a knock on the nursery door, and in came Mila.
"The word is actually 'genius,' hermanito." Mila said. "And I don't know everything like you may think. Just because I got straight A's every year, it doesn't mean I know every single thing that happens in this world."
Mila knelt down to her little brother and held his shoulders tenderly.
"But I do know one thing for sure," said Mila. "No matter what gifts you and Rosella receive tonight, you'll have your family there by your side to help you learn how to use them. And ultimately, it's up to you to decide what you do with your gifts, including whether or not you want to use them."
Mila's dog Chika then step in, yapping happily and then licking Pedro's face, making the little boy laugh.
"Chika!" Rosella exclaimed, running over to the brown poodle, and the pooch licked her too and made her laugh.
"Mila, don't let your perro get hair on the twins' outfits." Alicia said.
"Don't worry, Mama." Mila said, petting Chika's head. "Thanks to my newest invention, Stop Shed Shampoo, Chika won't be shedding anymore as long as she continues to be bathed in it once every two weeks."
"I wanna be an inventor too!" Rosella said. "I wanna be just like Mila."
"Maybe your gift will help you with that, Rosa." Mila said, giving her sister a kiss. "I'll be happy to make you my assistant in some of my experiments. And when you're older, we can do the big stuff."
Casita then moved the little clock over to let the family know it was time for the ceremony to begin.
"Yes, Casita." Bruno said. "We're going.
"We'll be waiting for you at your doors." Alicia said, and she gave each of her twins a kiss.
Drums beat as the ceremony officially began.
Eighteen-year-old Mirabel took a deep breath as she took her place at the top of the stairs near the twins' doors. She felt so nervous. She had only seen Abuela preside over one gift ceremony after hers and Mila's, but she made presiding look so easy. It felt so strange being at this celebration without her. Mirabel and Mila finally fixed their relationship with her, and then lost her forever a couple years later. Nothing would be the same in Casa Madrigal after losing Alma, but Mirabel had to stay strong for her abuela, for the rest of the family, and for herself too.
Mirabel held a new candle she and Mila made together after Abuela passed. Mila colored the wax to be magenta, the color of Abuela's dress, and Mirabel drew some little butterflies and wrote Alma on it to hold it as a symbol that they would never forget the woman who led them to their safe haven many years ago.
"Welcome, everyone." Mirabel began. "Fifty-three years ago, my abuela Alma Madrigal was blessed with a miracle that blessed her children and then her grandchildren with magical gifts to help and serve our beloved community. Sadly, earlier this year, Abuela left this life to join Abuelo Pedro in the next. Tonight, it's the first gift ceremony without her, and the first one with a new holder of the magic. My cousin Milagro and I made this candle in memory of Abuela, and tonight, I stand here in Abuela's place as her heir, taking my place as the new keeper of the miracle. So, tonight, we will see what new gifts await another set of twins in the Madrigal family."
Drums played again and the curtains opened to reveal the twins, Pedro quickly hiding behind Rosella, who also looked worried for what seemed like the first time. But, Mila had a feeling that they would be nervous. So, she brought out another invention she had made just for tonight. It was a musical instrument that was an accordion crossed with a guitar. She called it the guitardian.
Mila started to play a little song on her invention she knew always cheered up the twins. Anytime one or both of the twins was sad, scared, or hurt, their papa or their big sister would sing them their favorite lullaby 'Dos Oruguitas.'
Rosella and Pedro both looked up as they heard the pretty music their big sister was playing for them. after a few chords, they started to calm down. The twins looked at each other and nodded. They held hands as they walked down the aisle and slowly headed up the stairs where their big cousin stood waiting for them.
Mirabel smiled at the twins as they each put their hands onto the candle.
"Rosella, Pedro. Each of you is a miracle with or without a gift. You are each a gift to your sister, your parents, and to everyone in your family. Abuela would be proud of you both for coming so far. And no matter what happens tonight, you are still part of this family and are as special as any member. Do you both promise that no matter what gifts you get, you will never forget that?"
"Yes, Cousin Mirabel." The twins said together.
Pedro and Rosella each looked nervous as they approached their doors. They looked at each other once more as they reached for their knobs. Then they looked at Mila.
"Uno..." Mila started. "Dos... tres."
And the twins put their hands on the knobs.
Rosella and Pedro's doors both glowed to the amazement of everyone present. And the doors changed. Each door had one of the twins' names on it, but each had a different picture. Rosella's had a picture of what looked like her singing and music notes surrounding her, and Pedro's had a picture of him seeming to be asleep, and his name was in a cloud. The twins were confused at first, so they opened their doors, and in Rosella's room, there were tons of musical instruments of many kinds, and in Pedro's room, there were tons of clouds.
Rosella was so excited when she saw so many instruments. She felt like singing while she was surrounded by all these instruments, and she was even more surprised to find that they played themselves when she conducted them or sang a song.
(To melody of Little Mermaid's "Part of Your World")
Look at this room, isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you say that it's all that I need?
Wouldn't you say I'm the girl
The girl who has all the tunes.
Look at all these, musical things
Listen to them when they play as I sing
Looking around here you think
Si, it's got everything.
It's got guitars and pianos aplenty
It's got xylophones and trumpets galore
Want violins? Look there's twenty
And this gift, that I just got
What's it all for?
Rosella conducted the instruments to play, and everywhere she ran in the room, more instruments played at her command, and she started to dance and have so much fun, and soon everyone else did too.
Meanwhile, Pedro entered his room and looked around. There seemed to be a sea of endless clouds all around him, and there was even a bed that looked like it was made of clouds.
Pedro went up to the bed and felt how soft it was. Then he looked around at all the clouds. He wondered what his power could be. That was when he heard barking, and in came Chika, followed by Mila and Bruno.
"Pedro, have you discovered what your gift is?" Bruno asked.
Pedro looked around at the clouds and said, "No."
Mila looked around at all the clouds.
"Well, there's nothing but clouds in here, but no rain, snow, or sleet." Mila said. "So, I don't think it has anything to do with weather. But, something tells me you might see some things when you go to sleep tonight."
Pedro had no idea what his sister meant by that. But, she told him that he should join in the fun in Rosella's room. Rosella and Pedro both always loved music, and dancing together was their twin bonding thing. If there was one thing Mila knew about most twins, it was that no matter how different their personalities were, they always had at least one thing they could always do together. For Mila and Mirabel, though they were cousins and from two completely different couples, they still counted as twins in their family's eyes.
So, Pedro did go join in the fun, and he and Rosella had a ton of fun dancing together as she made music for everyone to enjoy.
As the night grew later and later, the guests were sent home and everyone in Casa Madrigal was put to bed.
Little Pedro's sleep, however, was a little different than most others' probably were.
Pedro looked around and found himself sitting on a floating pillow in what looked to be a nighttime sky full of puffy clouds, but no ordinary clouds. Pedro quickly found that when he tapped a cloud, he could see what anyone was dreaming about.
The first dream he saw was his twin sister's. In her dream, Rosella was in a beautiful red dress, singing a beautiful song in front of thousands of people. And when she finished, she got a standing ovation, and people threw her flowers as she took a bow. Pedro smiled when he saw that Rosella was having sweet dreams. Although, not as sweet as Camilo's dream.
Camilo, of course, was dreaming he was in a land where everything was made of his favorite foods. Arepas, polvorosas, chocolate, fritanga, and there was a river of Camilo's favorite fruit juice too.
Pedro laughed as he watched his older cousin gobbling up so much food. He was dreaming about eating, yet somehow, he was still getting more food on his face and his clothes than in his mouth.
"Oh, Camilo." Pedro said. "Even when you're asleep you won't stop eating."
Pedro looked at a few more dreams. Luisa was dreaming she was riding a unicorn through a sky of clouds made of cotton candy, Mila was dreaming that she was discovering a cure for disease, Antonio dreamed he was traveling through the jungle, and a girl from the village named Cecilia was dreaming that she was ziplining across a jungle of purple trees and butterflies. Pedro was so happy to see that everyone was having such wonderful dreams... except for one.
Pedro saw one cloud was not like the others. All the other clouds were white and puffy, but this one was black and pulsing, and it seemed to be thundering. The little boy had no idea what it meant and was afraid to go near it. But, he knew he was dreaming too. Anything could happen in a dream, including Pedro being brave. So, he made his pillow float him to the dark cloud, and he tapped it. And when he did, he was brought into a whole new kind of dream he was all too familiar with.
About a week ago, Pedro had a dream that he walked down the aisle, and the floor collapsed underneath him, turning into lava, leaving him alone on a small platform as his family stood above him, declaring him a disappointment to La Familia Madrigal. And this dream looked pretty similar. Only, the one dreaming was Mirabel.
Mirabel dreamt Casita was collapsing again, and Abuela's ghost came to her with a look of disappointment she used to hold towards her and Mila all the time.
"The candle chose wrong, Mirabel." the ghost said. "You were supposed to save the miracle and you allowed our family to lose its home all over again!"
That was when Pedro woke up with a gasp.
Mirabel was tossing and turning in her sleep as she now slept in what used to be Abuela's room. The door now held Mirabel's name. She was suffering terribly as her nightmare tormented her with every passing second she remained asleep.
Just then, the door opened and in came Pedro, and he wasn't alone.
"Mirabel, wake up!" Bruno exclaimed, and Mirabel sat up quickly with a gasp.
Mirabel put on her glasses and saw her uncle and cousin in the room looking concerned. Pedro told Mirabel he saw her nightmare, so he ran right to his parents. Bruno sat on the bed beside his youngest niece. He understood the most out of many members of the family how rough it was for her after she didn't receive a gift. And he knew better than anyone how much it hurt to be isolated because of something completely out of one's control.
Bruno hugged Mirabel and told her she wasn't a disappointment to the family.
"You're the real gift, Mirabel." Bruno said. "You don't need magic to make this family proud. You never did, and you don't need it now either. Mama would be proud of you for how you handled the gift ceremony, and I know she is proudly looking over you now for how you're caring for this family as you always have."
Pedro wasn't sure he liked his gift now. Yes, he did help Mirabel with her bad dream, but he quickly found that he wasn't going to encounter only one nightmare per night. Some nights, many people would be having nightmares, and it terrified him to watch all of them. Nightmares of monsters attacking, people being humiliated at some big event, and all sorts of unimaginable things that affected Pedro like a little kid watching a horror movie he was way too young for.
Rosella, on the other hand, seemed to have no problems at all with her gift. Until one day when she found out something about her song that she didn't even realize was possible.
One day, Rosella was out and about with her family, and she was happily singing a song.
Colombia, mi Encanto she sang all around, and she made a lot of people really happy with her happy song and dance.
"I love my gift," said Rosella.
But then she heard that the donkeys got out again.
"I could've sworn I calculated everything correctly on that lock I built." Mila said. "Looks like I'll need to invent something stronger."
Eight-year-old Antonio said he'd talk to the donkeys, but Rosella knew the donkeys were all going in different directions and would probably get lost. So, she climbed up a post and started to vocalize a pretty song. Luisa once read a book of Greek myths to her, and one of them was about magical creatures who made things happen by singing. She didn't hear the whole story though as Luisa was reading it. So, she was not prepared for what happened next.
As Rosella sang her song, the donkeys did come to her, but so did some people who heard her song. Rosella was shocked when everyone seemed to be under some kind of trance. She ran right to Mila, who was closest. And together, they retrieved a gong from Rosella's room and banged it really loudly, and everyone broke out of the trance.
Mila looked at her sister.
"Time to do some experimenting."
Mila took her sister home and gathered some supplies to run some tests on Rosella's powers. Of course, she was quick to warn Dolores to wear the special earmuffs she'd made for her to protect her super hearing.
"Okay, Rosella."
Mila tied her hair up into a high ponytail, put on her lab coat, and pulled out her clipboard to begin the tests.
"It's time to get serious. Your power has potential for things we might not know about yet." Mila explained to her sister. She rolled out a blackboard and drew some visual aids. "First of all, you and I both know that music is sound. But what you might not know is that all sound travels in these invisible things called soundwaves. When they're loud enough, you can feel the vibration more. All sound is made by something vibrating."
"Like how my gong shakes when we hit it?" Rosella asked.
"Exactly. You're a very smart girl, Rosa." Mila smiled, kissing her sister on the nose. "Now, there's a lot to know about sound, and we're gonna use that to figure out what kind of things your powers can do.
So, the two sisters began with some simple tests of how loudly and quietly Rosella could sing. Rosella could literally sing loudly enough for the whole Encanto to hear, and quietly as though she were whispering melodically. Then, they moved on to tempo, or speed of music. Rosella could talk pretty fast, and it turned out she could sing quickly too, and when she sang super slowly, she always started laughing afterward and so did Mila. And then, they moved on to perhaps what turned out to be the craziest test: pitch.
Rosella could sing pretty low notes, which created some strong vibrations when she touched something as she sang them. But, it was the high notes that were more concerning.
Rosella found she could sing as loudly and high as a soprano opera singer, vocalizing clearly in high C, a very high sound that very few people or creatures could make. Inconveniently, some people from a furniture shop were arriving at the Madrigal house with a big mirror Mirabel ordered for her room. It was a very beautiful oval shaped mirror with a frame of teal green. And as they came by while Rosella was singing really high, the mirror cracked.
Mila immediately got her sister to stop. Rosella ran off to hide in her room. Something told her she would get worse than seven years bad luck if Mirabel found out she was the one who broke it. Luckily, Mila had some fixing solutions she invented. So, she put on some protective gloves, applied her cleaning solution to the mirror, placed all the pieces together, and with a little lightning from Tia Pepa and some of Bruno's sand, Mila made Mirabel's mirror good as new.
"You always find a way, Mila." Mirabel said.
"Rosella and I are both really sorry for breaking it, Prima." Mila said.
"It's okay, I know you didn't mean it." Mirabel said. "Remember? I grew up hearing and seeing a lot of explosions and crazy incidents from some of your inventions. Remember the catapult delivery system?"
"Yeah, not one of my smartest ideas." Mila said, remembering that incident.
"It works with weightless things, though." Mirabel said. "Remember when it made confetti and streamers fly everywhere at Luisa's quinceanera?"
Mila smiled. "Yeah, that was one of the happiest accidents ever."
But, they didn't know what had really become of the mirror after it was fixed.
