Prince Boba
Some time before Grievous kidnapped Rosella...
Another day with the Clone Wars going on. The news had spread all over the galaxy of Crown Princess Gabby Skywalker's revelation of her relation to Jedi Knight and Prince Anakin Skywalker. Some were surprised, some were not. But it drew up a lot of buzz about the kingdom of Solaris.
Reports from Enchantra showed that over time, most of the vegetation had begun to return to Solaris, and soon animals would start returning as well. There were many questions about what the royal family intended to do with it leading forward. Most of those questions were directed to Qui-Gon. As the eldest in the family, that naturally made him king after Miranda died despite that she never became queen of Solaris. The day he received his crown on his latest birthday, they counted as his coronation day as well.
Qui-Gon told reporters, "At the moment, we are going to let nature run its course. Our own power still needs time to grow, and as of now we are currently in the midst of restoring peace to the galaxy. But rest assured, we will do all we can to ensure that this war will end soon."
Over the last year, even Lamenta's power was growing more and more, and she and Carmine received training to fight in battle with Anakin, Gabby, and the other Jedi. But, they insisted their grandfather stay behind; they didn't want to chance losing him a second time. Thus, he stuck with finding out all he could about Solaris' magic, and training younglings at the Temple.
On this very day, the Skywalker-Jinn family was hosting a ball at the Naboo palace in celebration of creating even more alliances with the Enchantra system.
Everyone was having a good time at this ball and socializing. Except for Boba.
Ever since his sister's coronation, Boba found himself feeling even more unsure of his purpose and his place in the family. He wasn't super strong like Qui-Gon, he couldn't make plants grow like Anakin, he couldn't make things happen by singing like Carmine, he couldn't turn invisible or see and change dreams like Lamenta, he couldn't heal people, control water and weather patterns, or bring storybook characters to life like Gabby. He couldn't even just cast spells like all the Enchanted family members could, or sprout wings. Well, Anakin still didn't have wings, but he had magic anyway.
As the ball went on, Boba could see his family doing all sorts of magical tricks. Anakin and Gabby were dancing around and making flowers bloom, Qui-Gon showed off his strength and let some kids piggyback ride him, Carmine made music with his mood, and Lamenta made lots of fireflies appear in the air. But they weren't the only ones with amazing magical powers there.
Colden made snowflakes, Gabby's friend Princess Abigail could shapeshift, Princess Echo Sonara could echo any sound she heard, Princess Electra made electricity, Aqualia could control water and become a mermaid, Dracona could control fire, there was even a girl who could build anything out of candy. Even all the horses had special talents.
Carousella, Fiesta, and Remix made music from their horns, Sapphire created magic spells from the gem on her forehead, and Peppermint made candy. Even Crescent had his talent for flying. The Jedi didn't have magic, but they had powers with the Force. And Boba didn't even have that.
"I don't get it. If I don't have magic and I don't have the Force, what am I even doing here?" Boba asked his plush lion as he walked away.
Boba sat by himself in his room until the ball was over. He looked out the window and thought to himself. His birthday was a few months away, and he would receive a crown of his own then. But... he wasn't sure if it would do anything.
Boba had overheard some kids saying that Boba should not even get a crown because he wasn't biologically related to the royal family. While the part of him being adopted was correct, his family believed he deserved a crown just as much as any other member. Biological heir or not, he was a member of the royal family. Still... Boba began to wonder if they were right.
Even with training on how to behave at royal balls, Boba did not see acting like a prince as his talent. The only thing he'd ever been good at was bounty hunting, and he gave that up years ago to pursue a more honorable path.
Boba looked at three stuffed toys that sat on his bed. His lion Fuzzy, plus two others. The first was a tiger plush with a green sweater named Raji. That toy was one he held close to him when he got lost in a store shortly after Padme and Anakin first adopted Boba. It had been a scary time for him, but he hugged that toy close, and soon was reunited with his mother and sister. And before they went home, Padme bought the tiger for him so Boba could always remember that day as the one when he realized he got his wish for a mom who truly loved and cared for him as her own. And the third one was a brown teddy bear with a blue ribbon around its neck like a bow tie, which Boba named Buddy. That plush, he'd received for his first birthday with his newly adopted family.
Right now, he felt like his animals were the only friends he could talk to. Normally, he would talk to Remix or Gabby about his problems.
Gabby understood Boba better than anyone, and Boba trusted her most of all when it came to confidence about his feelings. After all, she stuck by him even after she found out he'd infiltrated that Jedi cruiser all those years ago on a mission to murder Mace Windu, who killed his birth father. Naturally, most people wouldn't believe he could be brought back to the light, but Gabby helped unlock a side of Boba that had been asleep for a long time without him realizing it. She believed in him when no one else would, and slowly got others to see the good in him. And best of all, she taught him how to smile again, and for the longest time Boba felt happier than he ever did before.
It wasn't that Boba was ungrateful. He'd come a long way since he first met his sister, and earned a lot of great things. He was a prince now, he had a beautiful home, two parents who loved him, a grandfather, an aunt, an uncle, a cousin, a horse, lots of nice toys, enough to eat, and he got to see more places across the galaxy now, free from living under bounty hunters' care. But... he still didn't know what he was meant to do.
Eventually, Qui-Gon was walking down the hall, about to get ready for bed, when he heard soft sounds of sobbing coming from one of the bedrooms.
Concerned, Qui-Gon followed the sound and found his grandson curled up on his bed, crying, hugging his stuffed animals close to his body.
"Boba?" said the oldest royal family member.
Boba stopped sobbing for a little bit and sat up, wiping his eyes on his sleeve.
"Oh... hi, Grandpa." said Boba.
"Boba, what's the matter?" Qui-Gon sat on the bed. "Why are you crying?"
Qui-Gon gently held Boba's face in his hand and got him to look at his grandfather.
"Have some of the other children been giving you a hard time again?" asked Qui-Gon.
Believe it or not, Boba had been bullied more than recently. When he got adopted, some of the kids at the Temple bullied him, and so did some Senators' kids. Many were about him being the only 'ordinary' member of the family. Padme had been born into the luxurious royal life, while Anakin was a Jedi and a prince. Gabby was also a princess, but Boba, in case you still didn't know, was adopted, not born into the royal family. Boba had lost count of how many times he was reminded of that. If he had a credit for every time he was reminded that he was adopted, he'd have enough credits to pay his own college fund all four years, plus graduate school.
Boba looked down and shook his head.
"No." He sniffed. "I just..."
Boba broke down and started crying again. Qui-Gon pulled Boba into a hug and let him cry into his chest.
"Let it all out, young one." Qui-Gon soothed, gently stroking Boba's hair.
Boba cried a little longer, and then he finally calmed down. Once he did, Qui-Gon had him get up and walk with him.
"Tell me, what is troubling you, Boba?" Qui-Gon said.
Boba sighed and explained to Qui-Gon his mixed emotions.
"It's just that... you're super strong physically and with the Force, Dad is the Chosen One meant to bring balance to the Force, Uncle Carmine is a big superstar, Gabby's going to be Queen of Naboo someday, Lamenta makes people's nightmares into dreams... I can't do any of those things."
"Boba, you do not require magic to be special."
"It's not just that." Boba said. "I have no idea what I'm meant to do. I'm adopted. I wasn't born to be King of Solaris like you. I'm an unaltered clone bred to be a bounty hunter like my birth father. Sometimes I still wonder if he'd be disappointed in me for having Jedi as my family now."
"What's this about your birth and adoptive families?" said Anakin, walking in with Gabby beside him.
Qui-Gon explained the situation to his son and granddaughter.
"But you do have talents, Big Brother." Gabby said. "You can build things."
"You play the guitar pretty well too," added Anakin.
"You can dance and sing. And you're a great big brother."
"Exactly. You didn't need magic to do any of those things."
"But what am I supposed to do with all that? I'm not as talented as Remix or Uncle Carmine." Boba said. "I can't change my appearance on stage or jump into a split like he can. And whenever we meet important guests, all I get to do is stand around, smile and bow."
Boba stood at a balcony and looked out to the stars. He had so many questions about himself and his purpose. What was he meant to do? Who could he be now that he was no longer a bounty hunter? And Boba found himself singing once again.
Boba: It isn't that I'm ungrateful
For all the things that I've earned
For all the journeys I have taken
All the lessons that I have learned
But I wonder where I'm going now
What my role is meant to be
I don't know how to travel
To a future that I can't see
That was when Qui-Gon, the twins, Gabby, and Lamenta all arrived, having heard Boba was upset and feeling left out.
On my birthday, I'll get a crown
I'm a prince now, this is true
But it's still unclear to me
Just what I am meant to do
Boba looked at his family with desire clear in his eyes. He was unsure of what he wanted to do with his life, or where he was supposed to look to find his purpose.
I wanna have a purpose
Wanna do all that I can
I wanna make a contribution
I want to be a part of the plan
Qui-Gon put a comforting hand on his grandson's shoulder.
Qui-Gon: Your destiny's uncertain
And that's sometimes hard to take
But it will become much clearer
With every new choice you make
Anakin: Patience is never easy
I understand wanting more
I know how hard it is to wait
To spread out your wings and soar
Carmine: But you stand here for a reason
You're gifted and you are strong
Gabby:
You're part of this family
Because you belong
Family:
Know that your time is coming soon
As the sun rises, so does the moon
As love finds a place in every heart
You are a royal, you'll play your part
Anakin: We understand you wanting more
A chance to shine
A chance to soar
Those who had wings made theirs appear and soared, making all sorts of beautiful things happen, while Anakin stood by Boba and wrapped an arm around him
Lamenta: Soon will come the day it turns around
Family:
Know that your time is coming soon
As the sun rises, so does the moon
As love finds a place in every heart
You are a royal, you'll play your part
Qui-Gon placed a gentle hand under Boba's chin and looked his kindly in the eyes
Qui-Gon: You are a royal, you'll play your part
Qui-Gon pulled Boba into a hug, one in which Gabby started to join in. So did Lamenta, and so did the twins.
Boba started to feel a little better when his family hugged him. That was one thing they definitely didn't need magic to do. To Boba, the most magical thing they did was love him unconditionally.
