Omega Sees the Light
Here it was, the night of Prince Anakin and Princess Padme Skywalker's royal wedding anniversary ball. Everyone was so excited. There was going to be lots of music and dancing, and this would be Omega's very first party.
Omega sat at the vanity and looked at herself in the mirror again as she was back in her Cinderella outfit, the other princesses finishing getting ready too. She looked beautiful, but she felt so nervous.
"I don't know if I can do this." Omega said. "Maybe I should hide in my room."
"Omega, don't say that." Gabby said, fixing up her green dress and tiara. "You can't miss your first party."
"But what if I mess something up? What if I trip or spill punch on someone?"
"Omega, that won't happen. You're getting worked up over nothing."
"What if I lose control over my magic? Sometimes I want it to work, and it doesn't, and sometimes I don't want it to work, and spells come out of nowhere!"
A light sparked from Omega's hand and made small yellow fireworks of sparkles.
"See what I mean?"
"Omega, that only happens if you let your nerves get to you." Gabby said. "Believe me. That used to happen to me all the time. But I got over it, and so will you."
"She's right." Lamenta said. "And tonight's a special night. Uncle Anakin and Aunt Padme want all of us there. You're part of the family now."
"Not officially." Omega said, resting her head on her hand.
"It may not say that on paper." Gabby said. "But you're part of this family in our hearts. Papers can have all the official stamps they want, but they don't define anyone."
Just then a knock came at the door.
"Is everyone decent?" came Boba's voice.
"Come in, Big Brother." Gabby said.
Boba came in, dressed up in his suit. It looked very much like what he'd worn to his parents' wedding a couple years back, but this one was entirely new, since the boy had grown in the last couple years.
"Wow. You all look great." Boba said.
"Thanks." Gabby said, twirling in her dress. "It was a great idea having Mirabel help with our outfits too. Just look at these flowers she embroidered into my dress."
"Another knock came to the door, and in came Carousella.
"Come on, everyone. It's time for the royal family's entrance." Carousella said.
The fanfare played as Qui-Gon was the first to enter the royal ball. Then, Kara entered. Then, Carmine and his family entered when they were announced. Then, Gabby, and then Boba and Omega held hands as they walked in together. Finally, it was time for the couple of the hour.
Sapphire made the announcement.
"Announcing the lovely couple that we are celebrating tonight," said Sapphire. "Please welcome, their royal highnesses... Prince Anakin Gabriel Jinn-Skywalker and his wife Princess Padme Julianna Naberrie-Amidala-Skywalker of Solaris."
People applauded as the couple entered the ballroom.
Anakin looked as handsome in his wedding outfit as he did the day he and Padme publicly sealed their vows. Padme, on the other hand, wore a new dress made to fit with her now bigger stomach, as she was now six months pregnant. It was white with blue flowers like her wedding gown, only this on was made with lighter material, had long sleeves, and she was advised not to wear her ring in case her fingers started swelling.
Anakin held his wife's hand and supported her as they walked into the ballroom. People bowed and curtsied as well.
The couple shared a kiss with each other. Nothing was more beautiful than a couple who celebrated being together and honoring their vows by commemorating the day they said 'I do' every year, and remembering why they got married to begin with.
Anakin was first to get to give a speech.
"Three years ago today, Padme and I celebrated our marriage." Anakin began. "Before the wedding you saw on the news, we'd kept our romance secret because there were a lot of things that wouldn't have let us be together otherwise. But, even with all the risks we were taking when we chose to be together... we both knew it was worth it. And I'd risk it all again if it meant being able to call the most perfect woman in the galaxy my wife."
People aww'd as Anakin looked into his wife's eyes and pulled her in for a kiss after such a heartfelt speech.
"I love you, Padme." Anakin smiled.
"I love you too, Ani." Padme kissed her husband once more before taking her turn.
"Being here with all of our friends and family..." Padme said. "It means so much to both of us. Those who were there when we got married, and the new friends and family we've made after that to now. When I first met Ani as a little boy, I wouldn't have imagined he would've been the man I'd someday marry... even though he was just about the most adorable little boy I'd ever seen."
Anakin turned pink as some people snickered at that.
"And I was honestly terrified of the idea of taking the risk of being with him when we got older. But then, we were happily blessed with our daughter Gabriella. And as time passed, our family only continued to grow as we soon got some equine friends in the house, adopted a son, discovered long-lost relatives, and now we're all very excited that we will soon have another very special addition to the family."
Padme held her stomach affectionately.
"I think we can both agree," said Anakin. "That the best part of our marriage is the fact that we've gotten to have so many great people in our lives, and no matter how dark things get, no matter how many times we may fight or disagree, in the end, we remember the whole reason we got married is because we love each other, flaws and all. Even though, on you Padme, I can see no flaws."
"Ani..." Padme chuckled, and she and Anakin kissed once more.
The couple soon got ready to do the first dance. At first, everyone thought it would be tricky due to Padme's pregnancy, but luckily, Caroline experienced the same thing when she was pregnant with Lamenta, and learned about this sort of thing when she was a dance student. And, Alicia continued to teach dance classes during both of her pregnancies. So, with her, Caroline, and Carmine's combined skills in choreography, they managed to choreograph a nice slow dance that was beautiful and safe for the couple to perform.
Omega watched her foster parents danced so beautifully together, and one of them was in a more delicate condition. She wasn't sure she could dance in front of people, even though she wasn't even old enough to be pregnant yet. But, when the time came for the rest of the royal family to begin dancing.
Caroline and Carmine danced together, Boba took Gabby, and Kara took Lamenta, but Omega was the only kid left.
"Omega, may I have this dance?" Qui-Gon asked, offering his hand.
Omega was a little nervous, but she took her grandfather's hand and walked to the dance floor with him. Qui-Gon guided her through different steps. Omega still felt a little nervous with all the people watching, but she remembered what Carmine and Alicia each told her during their dance lessons.
"Dancing isn't about what other people want to see you do. It's about expressing yourself through movement." Carmine had said.
"The most important rule when performing a dance is to dance naturally. Move the way you move." Alicia had said.
And Caroline had said, "No matter what the dance, make it yours."
So, Omega remembered every other tip as well, like focusing on looking at her partner's face, not his feet, and following the beat of the music, and she started to feel better about dancing. And even found it a lot of fun when Qui-Gon twirled her.
Boba took a look at his twin and smiled at her when he saw she was doing so well. Then he lifted Gabby in a turn so she wouldn't bump into Lamenta.
"Whoa!" Gabby giggled. "Boba."
Qui-Gon lifted Omega at one point too, and she found it a lot of fun, like she was flying. Somehow, the dress she wore made her feel as though she were dancing in the clouds.
Omega started to really feel like she belonged here as she danced with different members of her family. Anakin figured Omega's first ball with her foster family wouldn't be complete without a father-daughter dance.
"You're a great dancer, Omega." Anakin smiled.
"Thanks, Daddy." Omega said, feeling more comfortable addressing Anakin as her father now.
"Looks like Omega's really bonded well with her new family." said Mila as she danced with Tech.
"She's a very smart girl." said Tech. "Although, I'm not certain she could measure up to you."
"You're slowly improving in flirting." Mila said. "Slow progress is better than no progress."
The couple kissed each other again.
"Will those get a room already?" Wrecker said almost too loudly.
"Eh, the more time he spends kissing her, the quieter he is." Crosshair sighed, liking a break from Tech blabbing and basically being a brainiac showoff, as he referred to him mentally.
What no one knew then, was someone was getting ready to pay a visit to the royal family.
"This place is crawling with guards!" Fennec said into her comm.
"I don't care how you do it, just get the girl!" said Lama Su over the comm. "Just make sure she is undamaged."
"Breaking into a palace is not my specialty. It's gonna cost you double my rate for the risk I'm taking."
So, Fennec Shand put on her helmet and snuck around, looking for a clear way into the palace. And, she just so happened to find an open window. All she needed was to get to it. And, there just so happened to be a bunch of trees nearby she could climb.
Boba and Omega got some punch together.
"So, how's your first party, sis?" Boba asked.
"It's... it's warmer than I thought." Omega said. "But I like it. I've never seen so many people who aren't clones or Kaminoan scientists before."
"I know the feeling. You should've seen my parents' wedding. That was where I asked Roya to dance for the first time. Speaking of her..." Boba saw Roya talking with some other girls. "I believe I promised my girlfriend a dance."
But, Boba was hesitant to leave Omega alone.
"Go ahead. I'll be okay." Omega said.
So, Boba went to go see his girlfriend and give her that dance he promised.
"Another sister, huh?" Roya said. "Must be nice."
"It was a bit of a surprise at first, but it's pretty cool." Boba said, twirling his girlfriend. "Now we're gonna have a baby in the family. Is it normal to feel scared?"
"Believe me, it is. When my mom was expecting Dahlia, I didn't know what to think. Not just because I was three at the time. A new baby is hard work."
"Like how much hard work?"
"Let's just say, your parents will be in for a lot of sleepless nights taking care of the new baby, and you and your sisters will have to do a lot more on your own."
"We already have a lot of crazy mornings with a third of the Temple living here." Boba said.
"It's a shame what happened to the Temple."
"I know. But the clean up is making progress, and the construction team said they should have the designs and calculations done soon. But with how big that place was... it's probably gonna take a while."
"Well, you know what they say... good things take time to build. A building takes less time to build than a home. That's what my mother says."
"What does that mean?"
"Well, a roof over your head doesn't make a place a home. My mother used to spend decades, sometimes centuries at a time in a lamp. That was not a home."
"I don't think anyone would call that home, genie or not."
"Good point, but still. A home should feel special. It should be what makes you happy. When my parents got married, my mother felt more at home because she was with the man she loved and had two children she loved. Then, they had Dahlia and me, and they felt more at home than ever."
Boba started to really get the gist of what Roya was saying. It didn't really matter where he lived, as long as he was with the people he loved. Home was where the heart was. And, he felt like he belonged with his family now. In other words, he was home. He only hoped now that Omega felt the same way.
Omega decided to see how the garden at night. And it looked stunning with the special nighttime plants Lamenta grew in the garden. White and silver flowers that sparkled like the stars, and special flowers called moon flowers that shined like the full moon. And fireflies filled the garden too.
Omega felt so enthralled by the beautiful things she was seeing tonight. She giggled as she tried to catch a firefly in her hands, and her hands glowed.
"Whoa..." she gasped. She calmed down, and the glowing stopped.
That was when Omega realized... her magic responded to her emotions. So, when she was happy, her powers did nice things like unleash a pretty glow. And when she unleashed her happiness, it seemed to attract the fireflies, and they flew around her like they were putting on a show just for her.
Omega laughed happily as she felt like she was starting to get the hang of her powers. She could make beautiful golden light appear in many images. All she had to do was imagine it. Stars, butterflies, flowers, patterns of curved lines. The possibilities were endless! And, as she felt a firefly land in the palm of her hand, she could feel a song coming to her heart.
All those days watching from the windows
All those years outside looking in
All that time never even knowing
Just how blind I've been
Now I'm here blinking in the starlight
Now I'm here suddenly I see
She looked at all the magic she'd made, and the fireflies flying around as though dancing with the lights.
Standing here it's all so clear
I'm where I'm meant to be
And at last, I see the light
And it's like the fog has lifted
And at last, I see the light
And it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
That was when Omega looked back to the inside of the palace where her family was, feeling her eyes were open more than ever to all she'd been missing.
All at once everything looks different
Now that I see you
Omega sighed happily, and was about to head back inside, when someone came in from behind her and grabbed her, and covered her mouth so she couldn't scream.
"Quiet, little one." Fennec said.
Omega tried to wriggle out of her grasp.
"You look very pretty tonight, don't you?" Fennec struggled to hold onto the child until Omega grabbed at her arm, and unleashed some kind of heat. "OW!"
Fennec felt a nasty burn on her arm.
"How are you doing that?" Fennec said. She grabbed her blaster and set it to stun. Then she tried to stun Omega.
But... Omega shot out her hand, and an energy shield protected her, to her shock.
"Whoa... did I just...?" Omega gasped.
Fennec tried to grab her again, but Omega shrieked so someone would come for her. And they did.
Anakin was first on the scene, and he got out his lightsaber.
"Who are you?" Anakin said. "Why were you grabbing my daughter?!"
Fennec took out her blaster, only to have it whacked away by a briar that popped out of the ground and then to get wrapped up in some constricting vines.
Kara quickly got the guards there and ordered them to arrest that bounty hunter.
"Omega, are you okay?" Anakin asked, kneeling to Omega's height. "Are you hurt?"
Omega shook her head, but hugged Anakin tightly, sounding like she would start crying.
"Shh. It's okay, Sunshine. Daddy's got you." Anakin soothed, hugging her tightly.
