New Power & New Feelings

Gabby looked through her magic books while her grandfather and uncle spoke with Echo over holo-transmission as he explained to them what occurred with Mini-R2, as well as a computer in one of the Separatist bases.

"So, this was beyond simply understanding a droids bleeps and blips?" Carmine said. "Like you could see into its... digital mind?"

"Exactly. It was very strange." Echo said. "It was like I literally heard the machine speak to me and I don't know how it happened."

"When did these strange events begin?" Qui-Gon asked.

"Right after Gabby worked her magic."

"You mean when she cast that restoration healing spell on you?" Carmine clarified.

"Yes, that's it."

Gabby looked into her Learning Libro for answers, and came to a hypothesis. Her spell must have somehow spotted a strong connection between Echo and the machinery that was in him. Because he was more machine than man at the time and his body had pretty much adapted to it, the restoration spell must have somehow transferred a bit of her magic to him and granted him the ability to communicate with machines.

"That's one power I never even thought could exist." Gabby said.

"So far, only him finding he can communicate with a machine by mere touch is the only odd doing that's occurred." Tech said, taking notes on his pad. "Since we don't know too much about magic, we concluded it best to consult you."

Qui-Gon didn't need to give it much thought before giving the Bad Batch new instructions.

"Bring Echo to the Jedi Temple so we may have him further tested on his abilities."

Meanwhile, Mila was working on another new invention. Something she hoped would aid in the search for Rosella.

For the last week, she'd been studying the navigation systems, tracking systems, and DNA to create something she believed would help them locate Rosella from anywhere, assuming she could create a signal strong enough to reach that far. And luckily for her, among the things she had brought with her from her own world, she had Rosella's hairbrush, which she'd grabbed by accident, but was fortunate nonetheless. And she collected a DNA sample from Bruno earlier, hoping to find out if her invention could detect family members based on high similarity between their genetic structures as a whole.

"If my hypothesis is correct, Chika..." said Mila, making some adjustments to the wiring. "This machine should aid in the search for mi hermanita."

Eventually, the Bad Batch came in with Qui-Gon, his granddaughters, and Master Windu.

"Hello, Mila. What have you got there?" asked Mace. He noticed Mila had a small device that looked like a datapad, except Mila had changed it to transform to a computer with small tubes on it.

"A new invention I think will help find my sister." Mila said.

"What does it do?" Gabby asked.

"It's an intergalactic long-distance tracker that analyzes the genetic structure of a particular specimen based on an applied source of DNA, as well as detection of similar structures within members of their familia." Mila said. "I call it, the Space Gene Tracker. Or SGT, for short."

"Um... could you repeat that in Basic please?" Lamenta asked.

"It tracks people with certain features. For instance..." Mila plucked a hair from Lamenta's head.

"Ow!" Lamenta rubbed her head.

Mila placed Lamenta's hair into a small tube on her invention, and typed in some things to make it work. The machine did some scanning on the hair and pulled up results as well as coordinates for Lamenta's precise location. Tech checked the coordinates.

"Her invention is correct." Tech said. "These are the precise coordinates of said child's location. It's astounding."

Mila blushed as Tech complimented her work. "It was nothing. Just a bit of tinkering with what I managed to find."

"However, Lamenta was standing a mere five feet away. Have you tested it on a subject who is farther away?"

"Not yet. I just need the right test subjects and a small sample of DNA."

"That can wait." Qui-Gon said. "Right now, we require testing of Echo's new ability."

"Maybe Echo will be able to communicate with Mila's invention." Gabby suggested. "It is a machine, after all."

"I thought Echo was a regular clone." Mila pointed out. "Aside from being made half-machine before."

"He was... until apparently the healing spell I cast somehow transferred a bit of magic to Echo and now he can talk to machines, as in see into their minds ad actually communicate with them like they're alive."

Mini-R2 beeped something.

Mila giggled. "That little droid is so adorable!"

"I can show you how I built him, if you like. My big brother helped me."

"Later, little one." Qui-Gon said. "Milagro, do you mind?"

"Go ahead." Mila said. "But be careful. I worked really hard on this."

Mila picked up her journal to get it out of the way, but bumped into Tech and dropped it, a few extra papers flying all over the place. Tech helped Mila pick them up while the others got to work with the machine elsewhere.

"Gracias, Tech. Thank you."

Mila was about to pick up another paper, only to find that her and Tech's hands accidentally touched as they reached for it at the same time. The two ended up looking into each other's eyes again, feeling something very odd.

"Wow, your goggles bring out your eyes." Tech said.

"They're my mother's eyes." Mila said.

"Is she smart like you?"

"Very, and an amazing dancer."

The two looked at their hands again and snapped out of it for a bit. Tech couldn't help noticing Mila's many sketches and formulas she'd written over the years.

"Did you really draw all these yourself?"

"Ever since I was three." Mila said, lifting her goggles onto her head. "But skipping grades didn't exactly make my social life too active."

Chika picked up Mila's pen in her mouth, which Mila took and sat it on her ear.

"But I always had Chika as my lab partner. Canines make excellent support animals for emotions, are capable of being trained to fetch specific items, and are overall loyal to their masters."

"Very true." Tech let Chika sniff his hand.

"She likes being scratched behind her ears best."

And Tech did just that.

"You said you skipped grades?"

"Yup. I skipped all the way to the eighth grade when I was only seven, graduated when I was fourteen, and had a ninth-grade level vocabulary when I was only nine years old."

"Impressive. Your parents much be proud."

"They are. Someday, I will be engineer and invent efficacious contrivances that will benefit my home in present and future generations so the community does not solely rely on the Madrigals' magical gifts."

Tech's head was filled with all kinds of information, but none of it could explain why he suddenly felt this odd sensation in his chest, like he was sweating all of a sudden, and he could suddenly hear nothing but Mila's voice and the sound of his own heart beating.

"Are you okay, Tech?" Mila asked.

Suddenly, Tech was the one feeling flustered.

"I'm fine. I... think I hear the others calling me." Tech said, but he bumped into something, and would've dropped his pad and smashed it on the floor, had Mila not caught it with her telepathy. "Oh, gracias? Is that the word for thank you?"

"Si. Yes." Mila giggled.

Tech tried to leave again, but bumped into the wall next to the door before he caught himself and actually went through.

Echo sat and held Mila's invention in his hands. And when he did, his eyes unleashed a white glow like Lamenta's when she used her power of finding the truth. He remained in that trance for about five seconds before returning to reality.

"Are you okay, Echo?" Lamenta asked.

"The machine spoke to me." Echo said.

"What did it say?" Gabby asked.

"It... it said it's not ready. It needs a stronger power source to do what its... mother wants it to do."

"Aww... the machine called Mila it's mommy."

That was when Tech entered the scene.

"Where have you been?" Crosshair asked.

"Just helping Mila."

"How sweet! Helping your girlfriend." Wrecker teased, punching Tech's arm.

"She isn't my girlfriend!" Tech snapped, his cheeks turning red.

Hunter smirked a bit, his heightened senses allowing him to sense Tech seemed flustered. He was no expert on relationships, but he knew enough to know that when certain men and women got together, they acted oddly, and sometimes did not seem like themselves.

While Qui-Gon spoke to Echo, Gabby gave Lamenta her magic book and asked Tech if she could speak to him privately.

And, Tech followed the little princess to down the hall.

"I know it's not really my business, but I couldn't help noticing the way you were around Mila earlier."

"What do you mean?"

"I've watched my parents for years, and my big brother has a girlfriend. Right now, we need to see him."

Boba, meanwhile, was in one of the gymnasiums, where he was practicing some cartwheels and tumbles on some gymnastic mats. His family was going to move soon, and he wanted to be prepared for his new school. According to the site, they were always looking for new members for all their sports teams from cheerleading to swim. And... Boba had a pretty good idea of what team he wanted to try for. Except... his parents didn't know what it was.

Boba was too embarrassed to tell his parents what he wanted to try out for. He thought they would think it was silly. But, the site said that every sport welcomed candidates male and female, even the cheer squad.

And here, Boba was finding he'd gotten pretty good at backflips thanks to a bit of training from Carmine. But, not even his sister knew he was thinking of trying for cheer. He didn't even know why, but he thought that he could try something different. If Gabby could be into Spiderman comics, Carmine wore brightly colored outfits on and off stage, and women could be royal guards... why couldn't a boy be a cheerleader? He'd already found he liked ballet when he and Gabby did it together, and found gymnastics very invigorating. And he'd always felt great hearing someone cheer him on when he struggled dancing; it helped him find the courage to get back up. So, he figured, why shouldn't he try for the sport that would allow him to do the same? Still, he worried what others would think.

Boba thought again, and thought maybe sports weren't his thing. Maybe he should go for something less physically demanding. Like the art club, but then again, the green team looked like something very beneficial. Or maybe he should try out for the drama club and give acting a shot. He played pretend with his sister and cousin all the time, so why not?

For now, Boba picked up some pom poms he found and tried cheering.

"F-A-L-L-S! Windy Falls School is the best!" Go Falls!" He cartwheeled and tried to land in a split, but slipped and face-planted on the floor.

"Are you okay, Big Brother?"

Boba froze as he heard his sister's voice. He tried to hide behind the pom poms he was holding.

"Were you just cheerleading?"

"No!" Boba threw the things away.

"It's okay if you were." Gabby said. "There's no law saying you can't do it."

"You're not gonna tell me cheerleading is just for girls?"

"Of course not. Besides, I'm pretty sure you're doing it because Roya's going to be attending Windy Falls, and she's a cheerleader too."

"She is?" He was starting to think he found a new motivation to aid in deciding on school activities.

"She's your girlfriend. You gotta know these things."

Gabby introduced Tech to Boba.

"Yes, he's a clone. First generation, unaltered. But that doesn't make him any less a Skywalker." Gabby said before Tech could ask.

"Are you sure she's not the one who can read minds?" Tech asked Boba.

"I don't have magic, but I know a lot about it by now and who has what kind." Boba said. "Gabby doesn't need magic of the Force to read people. Just our mom's DNA running through her veins."

"Boba, what symptoms did you notice when you first met Roya?" Gabby asked.

"Well..." Boba thought back to the day he met Roya. "I lost control of my speech, I felt sweaty, and for a while all I could hear was my own heartbeat."

"Sound familiar, Tech?" Gabby smiled.

"What are you saying?" Tech asked.

"My diagnosis is... you're in love with Mila."

Tech turned red again. Boba recognized that look all too well. He and Roya had only been an official couple for five months, but he learned a lot about how it felt to love a girl and feel terrified of losing her.

"If she likes you, you oughta take a chance with her." Boba said. "You never know if other guys are gonna want her."

"I know about a lot of things, but girls is not one of them. Other than biology."

"Well, biology is not gonna help with that. You gotta know what girls like. Or rather, what your girl specifically likes."

"It's true," said Gabby. "Not all girls are the same. Not all of us are skirt-wearing, perfume spraying, giggly little princesses who need men taking care of us all the time."

"Yeah. But if you wanna show her you're interested... I suggest starting with flowers. Even a single one makes a huge difference."
