Moving & Wondering
"Careful now, Padme." said Qui-Gon, helping Padme as they walked first into their new house.
With Anakin and Gabby out at battle, Qui-Gon and the rest of the family took on the job of helping Padme relax and be as comfortable as possible while her new baby was growing in her tummy.
Boba and Lamenta looked around at the inside of the palace. Despite that they'd stayed there previously, the palace felt new to them now that it would be their permanent home.
"I can't believe we're actually gonna be living here." Lamenta gasped.
"I know what you mean." Boba said.
"Everything should be moved in by now." Padme said. "Kids, why don't we go see your new rooms and unpack?"
"We'll take care of that, Padme." said Caroline. "You just relax."
"I'll come help you once I get Padme to her quarters." Qui-Gon promised.
While Qui-Gon helped Padme upstairs to her room, Carmine and Caroline helped the children. Carmine got the horses to their new stables, and Caroline got Boba and Lamenta to their rooms, where the servants were getting the decor out. Lamenta was very particular about where she wanted her glow-in-the-dark stars to be stuck, as well as her favorite glitter star mobile.
"Look, Lammy." Lamenta said. "This is our new room."
Lamenta was very happy to see that her new, bigger bed had already been made with her favorite constellation blankets, and some new star-shaped pillows her parents got her to make the bed homier.
Boba walked into his room and saw his guitar had already been safely placed by his bed. But, unlike Lamenta's room, a lot of his boxes were still left unopened.
Boba picked up a crowbar he found by one of the crates and began opening them himself. He found his clothes and toys in there, including his lion Fuzzy.
"I was worried I'd left you back at the penthouse or the Temple." Boba told his favorite plush.
Boba got to work sorting his clothes into the appropriate drawers, and arranging his toys on the shelf. Except... the top one was too high for him to reach, and the grownups were busy making sure everything else was moved in the right places. So, Boba had another idea.
Luckily, he had a chair and some other things he could use, which he arranged into a special course he used to parkour higher up and place a model starship of his on the top shelf and land swiftly on his feet on the floor.
"That's how it's done." Boba brushed off his hands proudly.
"Sorry I took so long, Boba, I-"
Caroline stopped when she looked into the room.
"Oh, your room is already done."
"Just used what I learned." Boba said.
"You did a wonderful job, Sweetie." Caroline smiled. "You really are a smart prince."
"Hey, Honey, we got packages!" Carmine called from downstairs.
"Boba, would you mind fetching your cousin?"
"Sure, Aunt Caroline."
The kids met the rest of the family, with the exception of Padme, who was resting in her and Anakin's new room. Carmine entered with a couple of serving droids carrying several gift baskets, wrapped boxes, and even a couple plants.
"It looks like the people of Naboo have sent us housewarming gifts." Carmine smiled, carrying a basket of treats sent for him.
"Is there something for me?" Lamenta asked, looking at all the stuff.
"I'm sure everyone got something, Little Lamb."
Everyone went through the different packages and had them sorted around by who got what. There were so many treats in all the baskets. Enough candy, cookies, toys, stickers, and jewelry to last at least a year. Padme was very happy when she found that the gifts addressed to herself and Anakin included some nice gifts for the new baby.
Remix and Crescent came in too. Even they had gifts sent.
"Cool! I've been needing some new headphones." Remix smiled when he opened his present.
Crescent trotted and flaunted the beautiful new saddle that was sent for him.
"Looking good, Crescent." Carmine chuckled.
However, among all the gift baskets and boxes... Boba didn't see one with his name on it.
"Why didn't I get a gift?" Boba looked down.
Lamenta and Remix were quick to notice Boba was the only one without a present.
"Where's Boba's gift?" Remix wondered out loud.
Everyone double-checked the baskets.
"Everyone got gifts except Boba?" Caroline said, frowning.
"I'm sure it's just a mistake." Qui-Gon said. "His gifts must be arriving late."
So, Boba waited until a little later. No packages came for him.
The next day came. Nothing.
A week went by. Nothing.
Another week went by. Still nothing.
It turned out nobody got a gift for Boba, but almost every day, more and more gifts came for Lamenta, Gabby, their parents, and Qui-Gon. But no one thought to send one housewarming gift for the one adopted member of the family.
Boba sat by his window with a sad look on his face.
I should've expected this. He thought. No one cares about the ones who weren't born into the royal family or marry into it. Even the horses got picked over me.
Boba sniffed. It wasn't not getting a present that bothered him as much as not being seen as important enough to be considered part of the royal family. When photographers saw him and Gabby with one of the grownups once, the photographers urged Boba to move over, wanting more shots of the crown princess. One reporter even pushed him to the side to get a closer interview with Anakin and made the boy fall down. They didn't even apologize.
Why do so many people pick on me? I know I did some bad things in the past, but I've done a lot of good things to make up for it. Am I not good enough for this galaxy or something?
Boba tried to stop himself from breaking down in tears again, and tried to distract himself by logging into Starscreen and clicking on a video he spotted of a horse spinning around, chasing its tail like a dog really fast. For a bit, it made Boba laugh and start to forget about his negative train of thought.
Boba suddenly remembered how when he first moved in with the Skywalker family, Gabby showed him Starscreen and all the funny videos people posted on it. Some of her favorites were obviously cute animals being silly. Boba remembered cracking up with his sister as they had a marathon of them. He laughed so hard he fell off his bed and rolled on the floor laughing.
And for a little bit now, he even found some other funny animal videos that kept him laughing, especially one he found of a lion and a dog both in a big fit of sneezes. He laughed so hard that now tears of laughter filled his eyes.
Suddenly, Boba's communicator beeped, and he answered it to see his sister was calling.
"Hi, Big Brother." Gabby smiled.
"Hey, Butterfly." Boba smiled right back. "It's been a while. How are you?"
"I'm fine. But can't talk long. We're about to embark on a mission to rescue the Chancellor. But the good news is, we're close to rescuing Rosella. Mila says she's managed to get her invention working better and will be able to patch her location to us. If she's anywhere near where the Chancellor is, we'll know."
"You get to have all the fun around here." Boba said.
"Trust me, I'd much rather be there helping you move in." Gabby rolled her eyes. "And Daddy really wants to get back home to help get ready for the new baby. How is Mommy, by the way?"
"She's just resting now." Boba said. "And we got a lot of housewarming gifts from the people of Naboo."
"Ooh, that was nice of them."
"Yeah... real nice." Boba said, starting to look down.
"Boba, you look upset about something. What is it?"
"It's nothing."
"Boba..."
Boba looked at his sister. She clearly inherited their mother's stern look. And he didn't want to let Gabby bother Lamenta to get the truth out of him, so he told her how he was the only one who didn't get a gift.
"What?" Gabby was in disbelief. "That can't be right. You're part of the family too."
"Try telling that to everyone else." Boba said.
"I think I will."
"No, don't do that. No offense, but I can't let my younger sister fight my battles."
"Well, in that case, Boba... I suggest standing up for yourself." Gabby said. "If you could stand up to Aurra Sing, you can certainly stand up to those who judge you. You're not any less a Skywalker or Jinn. Family doesn't require blood. Just love. And we all love you, Big Brother. I love you."
Boba felt a little better hearing his sister say that. No one could comfort him the way she did. She had seen firsthand how hurt he was being left all alone, a young orphan, one of the first known younglings affected by the start of the Clone War, while ironically being the first of many clones bred to fight in that very war. And, that little girl, though she was only three at the time, was smart enough to know that a simple hug could make a huge difference, and the most important thing she did was something she learned from her parents: how to listen.
Gabby was closer to Boba than any member of the family and had always been there for him. And every day, they only grew closer. Boba agreed when anyone said she would be a great queen someday, and always believed he could do better to be the amazing big brother she believe he was. But, sometimes... Boba never told Gabby, but some people when other family members weren't in hearing ranger, they constantly compared Boba to her and the rest of their family. But mostly his sister, the publicly dubbed Golden Child.
There was suddenly a sound that diverted Gabby's attention.
"Gotta go. Hope to see you soon, Big Brother." Gabby said before ending the call.
Boba sighed and looked at his night table, where there sat a couple family photos. One of him with his entire adoptive family, and one of him as a baby with his birth father. The boy couldn't help but wonder if he would've been better off staying on Kamino. But then he recalled how his family opened his eyes to how bounty hunting hurt other people, as well as seen the other side of a bounty hunter's mission firsthand. The last thing he wanted was to be like Cad Bane or Aurra Sing, who were willing to put innocent children in danger for the sake of a quick payday. To Boba now, no amount of credits was worth breaking up innocent families.
"I don't know what you'd think of my adoption by a Jedi now, Dad." He told the second picture. "But you always taught me to think for myself. And now, I need to find out who I am and what my purpose is in this new family. I wasn't born a prince, but you always did say we deserve to live like royalty. Now if only I could be better respected as royalty usually is."
