Matchmaking
Boba had no clue what his true purpose was yet, but now he had a chance to try something new: matchmaking. The potential loving couple: Milagro 'Mila' Madrigal and Tech of the Bad Batch.
Two individuals literally from different worlds. One was, in a way, a princess from a miracle land, while the other was a genetically modified clone. However, both were incredibly intelligent in their own rights, and each had various skills, but dating did not appear to be one of them.
Thus, Boba was consulted on this matter, since he was younger and had a girlfriend. To this day, he still couldn't believe a girl as hot as Roya would be with someone like him. Luckily for him, he had a little help from someone who knew Roya pretty well, so to help Tech, Boba went to look for Mirabel.
Mirabel was helping some of the younglings into their newly embroidered Jedi garments as many of them posed like models.
"Look at me! I'm a star storm!" Said one girl, spinning in her outfit covered in pretty stars.
"Hold still, Ganodi." Mirabel chuckled. She was doing the finishing touches on the Rodian girl's garments. "Almost done... there."
Mirabel cut the extra piece of string and let Ganodi look at herself in the mirror. Her robes were now decorated like some of the plants from her home planet. She loved it.
"Hey, Mirabel. You got a minute to talk?" Boba said. "It's about your cousin."
Mirabel groaned. "Is Camilo playing pranks again?"
"No, your other cousin. Mila."
Mirabel packed up her sewing supplies and went to talk with Boba.
Boba recalled Mirabel saying how close she and Mila were growing up together. He thought, naturally, Mirabel would know Mila better than anyone else.
"Do you know her favorite flower? What she dislikes? What she looks for in a guy?"
"I thought you already had a girlfriend." Mirabel joked.
"Tech is the one who wants to date her." Boba told her discreetly as he could. "This is serious."
"The one with the glasses?" Mirabel didn't sound too surprised. "Of course, Mila would be attracted to a man smart enough to understand her complicated fact-filled speeches."
Boba rolled his eyes. "Anyway, about Mila. What can you tell me about her? Anything that a potential date should know?"
Mirabel then explained to Boba everything Tech would need to know if he wanted to date Mila. Boba found his data pad and took note of everything about Mila that Mirabel told him.
1. Mila's favorite flower was the marigold
2. Her favorite color was purple
3. She hates sour stuff
4. She liked using a lot of big words and naming facts
5. She's allergic to raspberries
6. She loves horses
7. She yells in a lot of different languages when she's upset
8. She loves dancing
9. She loves to learn about new things, especially science
10. She loves to read pretty much everything.
Mila sounded like a very well-rounded young woman with a lot of personality.
"If I were a little older and didn't already have the girl of my dreams," said Boba. "I'd probably find her attractive too."
"The real challenge might be Tio Bruno." Mirabel pointed out. "He doesn't act like it most of the time, but he is not someone you want to get angry. No, no, no."
"Just how protective is he of Mila?"
"Don't you remember how he reacted to what she wore when we first arrived here?"
Boba realized Mirabel had a point. Judging by the way Bruno responded so dramatically to Mila showing even a little skin and fearing guys being attracted to her, it seemed that getting Mila and Tech together might be harder than they thought. Who knew if Bruno even thought that anyone would be good enough for his little miracle Milagro?
"I haven't known you guys very long, but I can tell Mila's very smart and pretty tough. Her dad should be able to trust her to choose a great guy. And don't tell me he'd try to use seeing into the future as an excuse to get her out of it."
"Well, if you think you can help my prima... I'll help any way I can. But I won't start on her wedding dress just yet."
Boba and Mirabel laughed for a bit at her joke.
Meanwhile, Gabby was giving Tech a bit of help on how to talk to girls. Of course, she brought Ahsoka in, her being closer to Mila's age and having a boyfriend herself.
Gabby grew all kinds of beautiful flowers in one of the gardens so Tech could find some Mila might like.
"Most girls do like when you compliment them as much as possible," said Ahsoka. "But you should also make sure you talk about interests. Too many compliments, the girl will either get cocky or she'll start to think you like her just for her looks."
"Getting her daddy to trust you will be a challenge too." Gabby added. "You should've seen my daddy when he found out Rex and Ahsoka started dating."
Ahsoka chuckled, "I don't know how Mila's father is, but my old master told Rex something along the lines of 'break her heart, I break you."
"Ahsoka, don't scare him more than he already is!" Gabby scolded. "Don't listen to her, Tech. I'll make it simple. Girls like being heard, listened to, and understood. And they don't like when they feel like they're putting in more effort than the other person in any relationship."
"So, how do I even approach her?" Tech asked.
"Just be yourself." Gabby said. "Walk up to her and say, 'Mila, would you like to go on a date with me?'"
"Easier said than done, based on what I know."
"You just need to practice. Pretend Ahsoka is Mila and ask her out."
Ahsoka stood and motioned for Tech to give it a try.
Except, when Tech tried to imagine he was talking to Mila, he found himself stammering and freezing up, before tripping and getting blue pollen spurted onto him.
"Gah! What is wrong with me?" Tech groaned.
"Don't beat yourself up, Tech." Ahsoka consoled. "That's pretty normal when you have a crush on someone."
Boba soon came in with his tablet.
"Hey, girls. Mirabel gave me a list of do's and don'ts about Mila-" He stifled a laugh when he saw Tech's condition. "What happened to Tech? Why so blue?"
"A flower squirting pollen happened." Tech said. "You were saying about Mila?"
"Well, if you plan on asking her to eat, make sure you don't touch anything with raspberries." Boba said. "Basically, forget they exist around her. Neither Mirabel nor I can stress that enough."
"Well, maybe there would be a good place to start figuring out how to approach her." Ahsoka said.
"Uh huh. But, we'll also need help from someone who struggled with his first crush. And I know just who to ask."
"Camilo, less shoulder, more elbow in that last move." Carmine said.
Carmine was giving Camilo and some of the children a dance class today. He was teaching them the dance number of 'We're All in This Together' from High School Musical.
Carmine clapped to get everyone's attention.
"Alright, everyone. Let's take ten. Stretch out, get some water."
Carmine got himself a towel, feeling sweaty from the workout he got. No matter how much time he spent dancing, it was always a workout in the end.
"You should see my Tia Alicia." said Camilo. "She's the best dance teacher in the Encanto."
"Really? What kind of dance does she teach?"
"I think mostly Cumbia, Merengue, and Salsa. She turned Tio Bruno into a great dancer in a matter of minutes when they met."
"Uncle Carmine, you got a minute?" Boba asked, walking in.
Carmine smiled when he saw his nephew.
"Hey, Boba. Did you want to join class?"
"No thanks. It's actually a matter of romance."
"Trouble with Roya?"
Boba shook his head. "Not for me. For a friend who likes this girl, except he can't seem to work up the nerve to talk to her."
Carmine understood immediately why he was consulted. When he first met Caroline, he struggled something awful to talk to her. The only thing he knew how to do was make music, and eventually he sang a song that professed his love for her, which helped him work up the nerve to ask her to a big dance where they had their first kiss.
"How bad is it?" Carmine asked.
"He stammered while talking to a pretend girlfriend and got pollened by one of Gabby's flowers."
"Worse than I thought." Carmine said. "Kids, I gotta cut class short today. Got an emergency."
Mila, meanwhile, was doing more work on her new machine, but had a bit of trouble concentrating.
"You know, Chika? I know about a lot of things, but dating in this world is not one of them, no matter how many romantic stories I've read."
"What'cha working on, Mila?" Lamenta asked.
"Just my machine to find Rosella. It's coming together. Echo's been helping me really communicate with it." Mila said.
Lamenta's power told her otherwise.
"First crush distracting you?" Lamenta said.
"How did you know?" Mila said, surprised.
"Power to see the truth, remember? I can literally tell when someone is lying or hiding something."
"Well, I guess I might as well spill, if you can keep a secret."
"Secret is my middle name." Lamenta giggled. "It's actually Valentine, but you know what I mean."
Mila had Lamenta sit down beside her. Chika stood by and had Mila pet her for emotional support.
"You might not believe this, but... I've never really had a crush on anyone before."
"Really?"
It was true. Being in a class where everyone else was older than her and being the child everyone her age looked at oddly for being so advanced and didn't understand what she was talking about most of the time... it didn't help her social life. And that included dating.
Every guy Mila met was either a jerk, only talked to her for "help" with his homework, or was only using her to make another girl jealous. According to some of the people in the Encanto, Mila did not look like the typical 'smart kid.' She and Mirabel both found it offensive when people asked how Mila was the genius, but Mirabel was the one who wore glasses all the time, whereas Mila had safety goggles on her head like a headband. Bottom line, many thought it was a miracle that Milagro Madrigal was both incredibly intelligent as well as beautiful. She was the one girl who looked hot in a lab coat, whether she worked with fire or not.
"So many people stereotyped me, growing up. People always expected me to have the answer to everything, and thought because I had the best grades, the highest IQ, and graduated early, I didn't face any pressure. But, big surprise... I did."
"Sounds like they were just being stupid. Almost as stupid as those other kids." Lamenta scrunched her nose. "I think you were very smart to teach them a lesson by writing insulting things about the teachers on their papers."
"You should've seen how their parents reacted." Mila giggled. "Turned out they were more afraid of what their parents would do if they were expelled than getting busted for cheating."
"No matter how big of an IQ he was programmed with, I think Tech would have to be pretty dumb not to think you'd be a great girlfriend." Lamenta said. "He's pretty smart too."
"And he's brave too. Sure, he's not as muscular as Wrecker, and not the most athletic, but he definitely doesn't hesitate to put his smarts to good use."
"You know, maybe you should ask him out. There's no law saying women can't do the asking. And Tech seems way too... what's the word I'm looking for? A word that means really nervous, confused? Don't know what to do?"
"Flustered?" Mila suggested.
"Yeah, that! Flustered."
"It's a big word for kids your age."
"Tell me, Tech." said Carmine. "What are your feels about Mila? What words come to mind when you think of her?"
Carmine had Tech sit down to talk about his feelings for Mila.
"Well, I can't say I noticed at first..." Tech began. "I could tell she seemed pretty flustered when I caught her and we looked at each other's eyes for the first time. I only thought it was out of gratitude for saving her from plummeting to the ground. And then came the second time I looked at her eyes."
"And again, what words come to mind when you hear the name? Mila?"
"Perspicacious. Apt. Intellectual. Alluring. Charismatic. Ravishing smile. Educational level that matches her beauty." Tech seemed to fall into a daze as his description of Mila seemed to have him hypnotized.
"Tech, wake up!" Carmine clapped to get Tech's attention.
"What just happened?"
Carmine chuckled. "You fell into a daze for a moment. No worries, though. That happened to me when I first met my Caroline. When she put my glasses back on me and I saw her clearly for the very first time, I stood and stared at her for what felt like hours, until she asked if I was okay and I snapped out of it. I was red as a tomato."
"How'd you end up with her then?"
"Well, since I didn't know how to express it with speech, I figured out a way to express my feelings with something I was good at. My grandmother told me all the time 'actions speak louder than words.' Since I loved music, I serenaded Caroline with a song that said how much I loved her for how she always broke my falls and whenever I was with her, my heart felt lighter than air. I could fall from the highest point in the sky, and she would be the only one who could stand between me and a rough landing. Whenever I struggled, she was always there. It's usually during struggles that you find the one."
"So, should Tech lose his goggles and wait for Mila to put them back on him?" Gabby asked.
Carmine laughed. "No. Of course not. Not on purpose, anyway. So, start small. Ask Mila on a date."
"Hmm. My research indicates, most romantic dates include dinners, sunsets on a beach, and romantic dances?"
"That's pretty common in rom coms. But in reality, that's not always the case. A date isn't about it being expensive or super fancy. A date should be special to you. My first date with Caroline, we went to a school dance. On our second date, we went on a picnic in the park, and looked at the stars together."
"How romantic." Gabby sighed. "A picnic would be a great place for you and Mila to really get to know each other."
"Yup. It would be a great place to start. And if all goes well, maybe you can ask her to this big dance that's happening."
Ever since Carmine started dance classes at the Temple, he got to helping organize fun events for the young ones. They did school stuff in the Temple, so why not have school dances now and then?
"Doesn't one need to know how to dance to attend those?" Tech pointed out.
"You don't know how?" Gabby said.
"Afraid not."
"Not to worry." Carmine said. "You're in the presence of Count Crescendo's own choreographer and dance instructor. First things first... we gotta see where your skills reside."
Later, Hunter was walking down the hall, when he bumped into Bruno, who was looking for Mila.
"Mila, donde estas?" Bruno shouted, making Hunter cover his ears. "Oh, sorry, Hunter."
"Be more careful shouting, will you?" Hunter said. "I've got sensitive ears."
"So does my niece Dolores. She hears everything. You didn't happen to see Milagro around, have you?"
"Afraid not, sir. I'm lookin' for Tech."
Suddenly, Hunter did hear something coming from the dance studio nearby.
"Hold still, Tech!" came Carmine's voice.
Hunter immediately ran, concerned for his brother, and he found Wrecker laughing at the scene before him.
"Why was there even a bucket in here to begin with?" Ahsoka grunted, holding onto Tech's body, while Carmine was trying to pull off a bucket that got stuck on his head.
"Tech, how did you get your head stuck in a bucket?" said Echo, trying not to laugh.
"Dance lessons." Gabby answered, working a little magic. "Hold him still so I can get some soap and water in there. Tech, you might wanna hold your breath."
Gabby threw in some water and slippery bubbles into the bucket, and Carmine was able to get him unstuck, but everyone fell down. And Carmine's glasses fell off again. But this time, he wasn't the only one to lose his specs.
"Did anyone see where my goggles landed?" Tech asked, his vision blurred as well.
"Why is it that when Caroline isn't around I lose my glasses more easily?" Carmine whined, feeling for his glasses.
Tech was soon helped up his vision still blurred, but then he heard a familiar voice.
"I believe these belong to you?" said the voice.
And the first thing Tech saw when his vision became clear again was the owner of the voice... none other than Milagro Madrigal.
Tech was frozen for a moment when Mila smiled at him. Suddenly, he was flustered again.
"Mila, there you are." came Bruno's voice. "I've been looking for you. It's about one of your inventions."
"I'm coming, Papa." Mila said. "Hasta luego. See you later."
And off Mila went with her father.
"Something tells me Bruno took Mila out of here for something other than her inventions."
"Mila, I don't think you're old enough to date." Bruno said.
"Papa, he hasn't even asked me on a date." said Mila.
"Milagro, you literally come from different worlds. It wasn't meant to be!"
"We may come from different worlds, but that doesn't mean we can't even talk to each other. You don't even know Tech."
"Well, when we get back to the Encanto, you'll find plenty of other men when you're older."
"What men? Those who only want me for so they can take advantage of me or tell me to dumb down my language?" Mila turned serious. "Tech hasn't judged me like they did, and he actually understands what I'm talking about when I speak. I know you only want to protect me, Papa, but you have to trust that I'm smart enough to make my own choices of who I date and where I meet new people."
