Bounty Hunter
Omega was so excited that Carmine was helping her find her inner music, but it was not as easy as she thought.
Omega breathed heavily after trying so hard to get a sound to come out of the tuba she found.
"It's okay, Omega. Deep breaths. Slow, deep breaths." Carmine said. "Don't worry. Lots of people have trouble with brass and wind instruments. They take incredible lung capacity."
Carmine then decided to show Omega the guitar, like he played before. He showed her how to hold it and how to make it make sounds. But, Omega wasn't feeling it with the guitar. The piano was pretty tricky too. and so were the violins, the harp, the accordion, the xylophone, and even the harmonica were tricky for her.
But then, Carmine introduced her to the tambourine. Omega found she liked percussion. So, Carmine introduced her to different kinds of drums.
"Drums have actually been known to be essential for bands and keeping music together." Carmine told her.
"Really?"
"Yes. Drums are the best instrument to really keep the beat. In a way, they're what help a band of musicians stay on the beat, keep their rhythm, and sometimes do the big finish in a performance."
Carmine showed Omega the different kinds of drums on a drum set and what sound they each made individually before playing them all together.
Omega began to really like the sound and decided to take a kick at it herself, and she found that it was a lot of fun. When she played, she could go as fast and as loudly as she wanted, and basically go on with her own beat. And it felt so good to finish with a crash of the cymbal.
"Wow, Omega! You're a natural." said Carmine.
"I am?"
"Yeah. You really let it all out. That's the whole point of music, and all forms of art. Expression. Being able to show your feelings in a way that just talking never could. Who knows, maybe you'll become a professional drummer someday, or another kind of artist. But, no matter what you wanna do in life... it's up to you to decide what you'll use your gifts for."
"What's it like getting to see so many places?" Omega asked her uncle as they sat in his room, where he was answering fan mail, Omega helping him read it.
"It's pretty exciting, actually." Carmine said. "Especially since I always had my wife and my Little Lamb there in the beginning. I haven't toured in a while, but I do perform private gigs from time to time. Lots of royal families and high-class senators tend to book big stars to perform at important events or for their kids' birthday parties."
"What's your favorite place you've gone?"
Carmine took some time to think. He'd been to so many amazing worlds across the Galaxy as Count Crescendo. In the process, he got to meet all kinds of interesting people and learn about their cultures. And his daughter got to learn about them too and see all kinds of great places where she found lots of different toys and games to play. But, if he had to choose any gig that was his favorite to look back on...
"Here on Naboo." Carmine said. "It was because I was asked to perform for the last Festival of Light that I found my family. I knew about the Jedi for a while, but I was crazy shocked when I finally caught a glimpse of the famous Anakin Skywalker and found out he looked just like me. At first, I thought it was just a crazy coincidence, like the Prince and the Pauper story. But then, we found out we're twin brothers."
"How come you never tells anyone else you're famous again?"
"Well, I was a pretty shy kid. And after I graduated music school, I was scared to go out into the industry officially. So, I started out singing with a blanket covering my face. Then, I hid behind a veil, and eventually I mastered the spells that allow me to change my outfits and my hair. I realized that when I hid my face, I found a new confidence that allowed me to be who I was without anyone knowing who I really was."
"Isn't your whole goal to encourage people to be themselves?"
"Yes, but the main reason I kept my face hidden is because of my family. You see, famous people get swarmed by paparazzi all the time, and their families tend to be big targets for the media too. I couldn't let my daughter be treated that way. She already got scared enough with people knowing she was the daughter of Count Crescendo's manager, who they didn't know was actually his-my wife. And, I came up with all kinds of ways to hide my identity so it would be easier to walk the streets peacefully too. That way, my wife and I could be together and spend time with our daughter as a normal family."
Omega started to wonder. Was hiding from the media really what her life would be like from now on once she became an official princess?
"Once the adoption is finalized, the media is gonna go a little insane." Carmine told her. "But you're gonna have your family right by your side. Always. You'll have a mother, a father, aunties and uncles, and cousins too. And grandparents too. Once you get some time with my father, you'll love having grandparents."
"Didn't you grow up with one?"
"Yes, I did." Carmine got out an old picture of him with his grandmother. "That's her. Grandma Miranda. Such a loving, wonderful woman."
"What was she like?"
Carmine told Omega all about how Miranda raised him on her own in one of the lower levels of Coruscant and taught him everything he knew about magic.
"Grandparents are amazing. They're different too. One thing most grandparents always do is give their grandchildren the most love they could ever want whenever they see them and spoil them too. Some grandparents will even let you do things your parents never let you do. And lucky for you, you'll get some time to spend with him very soon."
Omega did soon get to spend some time with her new paternal grandfather Qui-Gon once he returned from surveying Enchanted victims of Lady Morpha's.
But, he still had a few more places to visit, and those were Republic allies, starting with Pantora. And because Omega had never seen any other parts of the galaxy, he naturally asked her if she would like to accompany him.
"Can Estrella come too?" Omega asked.
"Of course." Qui-Gon said.
But, of course, Qui-Gon knew it would be risky with Omega being seen by herself with a member of the royal family, so he got the Batchers to go with them to act as Omega's guardians.
Qui-Gon held Estrella's rein as they passed through a marketplace on Pantora. Omega looked around happily as she saw so many new things all around her.
"Why can't I have a turn riding Estrella?" Wrecker whined as Omega was the only one riding the horse.
"You require more training, Wrecker." Qui-Gon said. "Besides, she's Omega's horse."
As the group passed through the city, they came up on a parade of troops as people were cheering.
"What are they celebrating?" Omega asked.
"The end of the war." Qui-Gon said.
However, people also took notice that a member of the royal family was present.
"It's King Qui-Gon." said one citizen.
Qui-Gon, of course, was polite and greeted the people as they passed through town, but had Omega stay low so she wouldn't get hounded.
"Royal people are natural attention magnets." Tech said.
At some point, Qui-Gon found a moment to put his hood back up, hoping he could draw less attention. It was already hard enough doing that with a pink horse among their group.
Omega couldn't believe she was finally getting the chance to see more of the galaxy.
At some point, the group stopped so Estrella could drink some water and they could get something to snack on. Qui-Gon told Omega to stay put and play with her doll. So, she did... for five minutes. That was when she heard a creature yapping, and she looked to see a cart rolling by, one with a crate with two cute little critters in it called voorpaks.
"Hello, there." Omega smiled.
The creature yapped and licked Omega, making her laugh. But then the creature grabbed her trooper and started rolling away.
"Oh. Hey, wait. Wait."
Omega ran after them, trying to get her toy back, but she didn't know that she was being watched by someone.
"Eat up, Estrella." Qui-Gon said, giving Estrella some fresh berries they'd purchased.
Estrella munched away.
"Hey, Omega. You hungry too?" Wrecker said. "Omega?"
The group looked around and realized Omega wasn't there anymore.
Qui-Gon called for his granddaughter, but she wasn't anywhere around.
"Estrella, fly up and see if you can spot her." He told the equine.
Omega ran and ran, trying to catch up with the voorpak who took her toy, but she bumped right into a Gotal man on her way and fell down.
"Hey! Watch it." said the Gotal angrily.
"Sorry."
Omega looked around and realized she had no idea where she was. The poor girl got scared. She was in an unfamiliar place filled with strangers, and she had no idea where her grandfather or her friends were. She didn't even know if they'd noticed she was missing.
"Oh, are you all right?" said a female voice.
Omega looked behind her and saw a human woman she'd never seen before. She was carrying an orange helmet in her arm. The woman knelt down to her and said, "You look lost."
"I got separated from my grandpa and my friends." said Omega.
But this woman was surprised to hear her say she had a grandpa. From what the Kaminoans said, she didn't even have parents, let alone grandparents.
"I can help with that. Not to worry. We'll find them."
The woman helped Omega up and started to walk with her.
Estrella looked around.
"Do you see her?" Wrecker shouted.
"There's too many people to spot her from here." Estrella said, flying back down. "Maybe we should split up and look for her."
Qui-Gon split everyone into groups of two. Except Hunter, who chose to go alone.
"If you spot her, contact the others, and we'll meet back with you." Qui-Gon said.
And so, they all split and searched for Omega. Estrella tried sniffing around to see if she could catch Omega's scent.
During the search, Hunter managed to find a clue: Omega's trooper doll. And he ran to keep looking.
Omega continued to walk with the woman, whose name was Fennec Shand, and she got more and more worried by the minute.
"Thanks for helping me look for my friends." said Omega.
"It's no trouble at all," said Shand. And she noticed Omega holding her stomach. "You hungry, kid?"
"Yeah, but I don't have any credits."
As luck would have it, they came across a Pantoran woman who was picking up a backet filled with fruit. And Fennec 'accidentally' bumped into the basket, making some of the fruit drop to the ground.
"Sorry about that."
Fennec and Omega picked up the fallen fruits, the older girl putting two into her helmet. That was when Omega noticed the woman carried a blaster. She wondered if she should be worried. Then she and Shand put the rest of the fruit back into the basket.
"Thank you. You're so kind." said the woman.
"My mistake." Then once the Pantoran was gone, she gave Omega one of the fruits. "Here."
"But we didn't pay for these." Omega pointed out.
"It's okay to break the rules sometimes."
"Are you a soldier?"
"Not exactly."
"Then why do you have a blaster?"
"To protect myself. The galaxy's a dangerous place to be on your own, war or none."
"Yeah. It's a good thing I have my friends and family." Omega took a bite of her fruit.
"Aren't you lucky?"
Then, Omega had an idea. "I know. If you're alone, you should come with us."
Shand chuckled and said, "Now that's the best offer I've had in a long time. Come on. This way."
That was when Omega heard a familiar voice calling her name.
"Oh, there's one of my friends now." Omega smiled, waving to Hunter.
But, Hunter did not look exactly cheerful at the moment.
"Omega, step away from her." said Hunter.
"Why?" Omega asked. "She was helping me look for you."
"Yes, Omega and I were getting to know each other."
That was when Shand put on her helmet and began reaching for her blaster, Hunter reaching for his own.
Then all of a sudden, Shand fired at Hunter, but she missed each time.
"Hunter!" Omega exclaimed, and then Shand tried grabbing her. "Let go!"
Suddenly, Omega disappeared from her grip in a golden flash and appeared a foot away from her, to Hunter and Shand's shock.
"How did you do that?" Shand gasped.
Instead of answering, Omega ran as fast as she could while Hunter fought Shand.
Meanwhile, the other Batchers, Qui-Gon, and Estrella were still looking for Omega, when Hunter contacted them.
"I found Omega, and lost her again." Hunter said. "Somebody attacked us."
"Somebody who?" Wrecker asked.
"A woman," said Hunter, sounding like he'd been hit in the gut. "Highly trained. She's after the kid."
"Yeah. We'll see about that." Wrecker said.
"I'll head back to the ship and tap into the central security network." said Tech. "There should be enough cameras in this city to find her."
"Whoever finds her, alert me right away so Estrella can get her off-world." Qui-Gon instructed.
"Understood, Your Majesty." Tech said.
Omega ran, ran, ran as fast as she could through town to get away from Shand. Quickly, she hid behind some big crates, but saw Shand around them. She had to find a better place to hide, quick! Luckily for her, there was a manhole right nearby, so she pressed a button and climbed inside.
Meanwhile, Tech tapped into the camera systems and searched until he spotted the girl.
"I have eyes on Omega," said Tech. "She went down into the maintenance tunnels. Head northwest, at 155."
That was when Shand came into view as well.
"And she's got company."
Omega continued to run as she made it into the maintenance tunnels. She really wanted to be back with her family now. And right now, she really wished she knew how to control her powers so she could use them to defend herself or find her family.
Omega tried to make some magic appear from her hands, but struggled getting even a spark.
"Come on! Work, please!" Omega begged.
That was when Omega bumped into something big that she didn't see. It was dark, and Omega was terrified... until the figure came into the light, revealing it to be...
"There you are." said the strongest Batcher.
"Wrecker?" Omega gasped as her biggest brother took her into his arms. "You had us worried."
Omega hugged Wrecker and said, "Can we get out of here?"
"You got it."
Wrecker carried Omega and contacted the others to let them know he had her and they were on their way to meet them. But then, Omega gasped as a familiar, less pleasant figure appeared on the other side of the tunnel.
"Get to the ship." Wrecker said, placing Omega on a nearby ladder. "I'll handle her."
Omega climbed as quickly as she could up the ladder, but Shand quickly joined her in climbing. She managed to get to the top and lock the door. But, she was quickly terrified again when she saw how high up she was.
Omega didn't know what to do. She looked back at the door, and became startled when she heard a blaster fire, and she slipped over the edge of the tower, luckily grabbing on before she could fall.
Qui-Gon rode Estrella through town as they kept looking and looking.
Tech soon contacted the others as Wrecker had disappeared.
"I don't see Wrecker, but Omega is hanging from a maintenance tower in the skyway."
"Hanging?!" said Hunter and Qui-Gon.
"For now. I suggest you hurry." said Tech.
Qui-Gon snapped the reins on Estrella, who stood up with a whinny and began running and taking flight to go save her girl.
Omega held onto the tower as long as she could, but she was slipping. And then, she couldn't hold on any longer, but just before she could fall, someone grabbed her hand. Fennec Shand.
"You can thank me later." said the bounty hunter.
Shand looked around and saw she had company. Then, she spotted an open cargo ship conveniently flying by.
"Tuck and roll when you land, kid." Shand said, and she let go of the kid.
But instead of landing on the ship, someone else swooped in and caught Omega.
"Hang on tight!" Estrella said.
"Estrella?" Omega gasped. "Grandpa?"
Qui-Gon hugged Omega close to his body to keep her safe.
"Get Omega out of here!" Hunter said into the comm. "We got this woman!"
"Hold on, child." Qui-Gon said. "Estrella, now!"
Estrella quickly got to work activating her shoes, and she apparated the two humans and herself back to Naboo.
Omega hugged Qui-Gon, breathing heavily, sounding like she would start crying at any moment.
"It's alright, Omega." Qui-Gon said, holding her close. "I've got you. You're safe now."
Luckily, the Bad Batch made it out okay too. The only question that remained is who that woman was and why she was after Omega.
"She has to be a bounty hunter." said Hunter.
"A what?" Omega said, confused.
"Someone hired to retrieve targets." said Echo.
"You mean like my birth father Jango Fett?"
"Exactly." Qui-Gon said. "Your brother Boba once fell into a bad crowd of them before he met the Skywalkers."
"And in this scenario, you appear to be the target." said Tech.
"Me?" Omega gasped.
"Hey, don't scare the kid." Wrecker scolded.
"Could it be because she's being adopted by the royal family, and someone sees her as a potential hostage?" Estrella hypothesized. "I would've thought Gabriella would be the target, seeing as everyone now knows she's half-Jedi."
"That could be a potential reason," said Tech.
"We have to find out who she is and who hired her." said Hunter.
"He's correct." Qui-Gon said. "Until then, Omega... it might be best for you to remain here until this bounty hunter can be stopped and whoever hired her is taken care of."
Omega wasn't sure what to think at this point. She got lucky this time, but she was so scared.
That night, Omega was scared to sleep in her room by herself. And, like almost any scared child, she crawled into Qui-Gon's bed.
Qui-Gon chuckled when he saw the girl doing this. It actually reminded him of when Obi-Wan was small, and whenever he had a bad dream, he would crawl into bed with him, feeling better protected by the big and strong, kind-hearted Jedi. So, when Omega did it now, he didn't complain. He just didn't have the heart to make her be in her room by herself after the traumatic experience she'd had.
"You'll be okay, Omega." Qui-Gon whispered, and he gave her a goodnight kiss on her head.
Meanwhile, with Fennec Shand...
The target got away, but I'll find her." said Shand over the comm. Luckily for her, she'd caught a glimpse of one of Omega's rescuers after his hood fell down. "It looks like she's gotten acquainted with the royal family."
