Burning Tears-Chapter 9
Nathan and Vincent returned home later that night, as they spent the whole day doing various activities to avoid the sudden jealousy instilled in Adrianna. Nathan opened the front door and silently walked in. Vincent followed close behind, but stepped on one of his shoelaces, tripping over with a loud thud.
"Ow!"
"Vince, that was not quiet. Are you OK?" whispered Nathan.
"I told you my shoelace was untied."
"You did, my bad. Take 'em off, we're inside now anyway. First thing tomorrow, you're gonna learn how to tie your shoes."
"OK. Look!"
Nathan followed the direction of the little finger and saw Adrianna sprawled out on the couch.
"Go get ready for bed, I'll be up soon."
Vince nodded, making his way upstairs. Nathan tip-toed over to Adrianna, picking her up off the sofa in bridal-style. He carefully carried her upstairs in hopes of not bumping her head against the walls.
Upon finally making it to the room, kicking the door open, Nathan stood appalled at the sight of the room: his pillow was on the floor and their quilt was torn in half, with one half on the floor by his pillow. Nathan's best clothes were scattered about on the floor, while some of his underwear now hung where the clothes once were. This, along with many other things, this mess was entirely Nathan-based.
"Really? OK then." frowned Nathan, walking back downstairs with Adrianna.
Vincent followed behind carrying his change of clothes in-hand.
"Hey, where you going with Mommy?" Vincent curious.
"Mommy's going on timeout." Nathan responded.
"What did she do?"
"She broke the room...at least, my parts of it."
Vincent went to go peek at the scene and marvelled at the dishevelment.
"She's crazy!" he said, making his way to the bathroom.
Nathan came marching back upstairs after dropping Adrianna back on the sofa and went to the room. He replaced his pillow and blanket on the bed, then snatched Adrianna's set, going back downstairs again. Nate slid the pillow under Adrianna's head and threw her half of the quilt over her. Nathan strided upstairs once more, throwing himself on the bed in waiting of the shower.
The Next Morning...
Nathan awoke to the smell of frying food. Nothing in specific however, just something was being fried. It almost smelled like a fast-food restaurant.
"What's for breakfast?" he thought, rolling off the bed and exiting the room.
The stairs creaked with each descending step Nathan took, alerting some footsteps heading his way. They were small, belonging to only one person, who just appeared with a doughnut in his hand, blue frosting and rainbow sprinkles all over his fingertips.
"Looks like your mother's feeling better." commented Nathan.
"WAY better! She can't stop making and eating food!"
"Oh. OK. What is she making now?"
"I dunno, but this is her fourth time making something!"
"What the- fourth? Did she not eat yesterday?"
Nathan followed Vincent to the kitchen, a feeling blast of heat upon stepping foot on the tiled floor. The microwave was on, the oven was baking, the stove was filled with pots and pans on high-fire with various things like eggs, sandwiches, and vegetables. A doughnut box was emptied on the floor, next to a sea of white plastic and brown paper grocery bags.
"Please tell me we're not going to invite the Carters to whatever celebration we're having." said Nathan.
"Oh, hi baby!" Adrianna spun around, grumbling with her mouth filled.
"What's that?"
"Carrots! Want some?" she offered, pulling a baby carrot out of her pocket.
"Why do you have carrots in your pocket?"
"Why not? Here," she shoved the carrot in his mouth, searching her other pocket, "Take some walnuts too!"
After feeding him the crushed walnuts, Adrianna went to the fridge, grabbing a jar of marinara sauce. She popped it open and started chugging the whole thing.
"Ew, stop that!" Nathan chuckled, confiscating the jar from her.
"Hey, I wasn't finished with that!"
"You are now, you've obviously had enough. Hey, you wanna explain what happened to my stuff in the room?"
"Oh, don't worry about that! I'm sorry, I don't know what that was about, but for now, let's enjoy the moment!"
The oven beeped and Adrianna hopped over to it. She grabbed her green mittens and opened the oven, pulling out a sheet of cookies.
"Cookie?" she offered.
"Uh...sure." Nathan taking one.
The microwave then went off and she handed the sheet to Nathan, who was unaffected by the temperature of the burning steel sheet. He placed it on the counter, shutting off the oven. Adrianna came back with a bowl of ramen noodles, devouring it carelessly.
"Babe, it's 9:10 in the morning. Here, eat these scrambled eggs you made, get rid of that!" he suggested.
Adrianna grabbed the pan and dumped the eggs in her bowl, mixing the eggs with the ramen. She took a spoonful, but did not like the flavor, handing the bowl to Nathan. There was a knock at the door and Adrianna stormed over to it. Nathan tasted the egg-ramen bowl himself, and was surprised to actually like it, following up with more spoons.
"Smells amazing!" said a voice at the door.
Adrianna came running back- dealing with the boiling mixed vegetables, then Joseph came in after. He was eating a hot dog and holding a case of Gatorade.
"Sup bro!" Joseph burped.
His breath reeked of alcohol.
"Have you been drinking?" asked Nate.
"Dude, I'm so drunk!" Joseph cackled, dropping the Gatorade on the floor.
Nathan slung Joe's arm around himself and walked him to the couch. Unfortunately, there were potato chips all over it.
"Oh, perfect! I'm fine right here!" lit up Joseph.
"No you're not- Joseph, no!"
Joseph slid off Nathan's arms, falling over. Joseph landed perfectly; his body lying down with his face next to a group of chips. Nathan instead fell on the carpet, face-first on someone's sandal. Joseph then started using his tongue to fish for the chips that were close enough to him.
"Oh for goodness sake-...Vincent?"
Nathan glanced around noticing his son wasn't in sight. His first instinct was to check upstairs. Nathan snuck his way upstairs, heading to Vincent's room. Nathan opened the door and there his son was, getting a head-start on trying to learn how to tie his shoes.
"Ate enough?" asked his father.
"I'm not that hungry. I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and that doughnut."
"So...you're not crazy hungry?"
"No. Why?"
"Just curious. I'll be up here again soon."
Nathan shut the door, thinking to himself.
"OHHH!"
Nathan sped downstairs to see Joseph puking in front of the couch. Adrianna rushed in, giving him a bucket and a cup of water. Nathan also rushed over, rubbing Joseph's back. While Joseph continued his puking in the bucket, Adrianna then started drinking Joseph's water.
Nathan took it from her, "Hey, no! That's not yours!" He took a glance at the cup and oddly, there was a single chicken nugget floating in the water. "Addie, really?!"
"Ooh, that's fine! Thanks Ad'!" Joseph now, taking the cup and chugging it down.
He gave the cup back to Nathan, now chewing on the nugget.
"I gotta go. Later y'all!" said Joseph, making his way out of the house.
"What in the shitting hell am I missing here?! One day you're all jealous for no apparent reason, the next you wanna eat the whole fridge!" exclaimed Nathan.
"Hold that thought, I gotta go get the bacon sandwich!" responded Adrianna.
Nathan followed her, "Adrianna, I think you've had enough."
"Nonsense I- BWUUGH! Whoa! That was a big burp!" she giggled.
She went to reach for grilled sandwich, but Nathan stopped her. "Enough. You know what? This is mine now!"
He grabbed the sandwich and took a huge bite out of it.
"Hey, no! That was mine!"
"Ya! It wwas!" Nathan grumbled, chewing the food.
Adrianna tried prying it off him, but Nathan kept her away by raising his arm away from Adrianna's shortness.
"No fair!" she whined.
Nathan took another quick bite before she could jump at it again. "Oh vwwell!"
Adrianna stomped her foot and stuck her tongue out at him. She then continued eating the snacks in her pocket, surprised to find half of a cookie in it. She spun around going back to the fridge.
"No! Adrianna!"
Nathan went to stop her, but she stepped on a pile butter on the floor, slipping forward and smacking her head onto the fridge. Nathan uttered a curse and kneeled down to check on her. She was breathing, but was unconscious. He let out a heavy sigh and once again lifted her up off the floor. He took her back the bedroom and placed her on the bed. He then touched her forehead with two fingers and she glowed green momentarily.
"Sorry, I'm only healing your headache. I think it's best that I heal you to the point where you want to sleep, and not eat." he claimed.
Nathan grabbed his and her room keys in their nightstand drawers and left the room, locking Adrianna in the room. He returned downstairs, looking at the mess of food, drinks, and vomit in the house. Plopping down on the clean single-person sofa, he realized that there was yet another unfamiliar TV on the wall.
"...I don't even wanna know where this one came from." he huffed, rubbing his forehead.
He found the remote and turned on the news. The lady on-screen giving the weather was holding a hoagie as she was telling the weather.
"You can't be fucking serious."
"Now, you can all read the screen yourself, so I'm going to take my lunch break and give someone else the time!" the lady concluded, leaving the screen with just the forecast displayed.
"How professional..." muttered Nathan.
The background then switched and a man came in with a bottle of wine, "Breaking News! The 'Jesus' figure of our minds claims to make his debut tomorrow! Meet on Main Street in front of the church at noon tomorrow! This is just a reminder in case you forgot his Holy Message!"
"No! I need to call Jo-...Dammit, I can't. I'll have to see how he feels tomorrow, and if not, I'm going alone...I need to eat something now though,..." he looked over at the kitchen havoc, "-but what can I eat?...I'm not going to Taco Bell again, I can only imagine what's going on today...Fuck."
