Burning Tears-Chapter 14

Theme Song: "Working For The Weekend" by Loverboy

Later That Night...

"Two Sins, two full days left." thought Nathan, scanning his watch.

It was 11:57 PM, everyone was sound asleep except Nathan; sleepless with the growing pressure of the world's fate and the anticipation of the next Sin to follow within the minutes left of the night. It was either Wrath or Lust to happen next, and neither of them meant any good compared to the other five.

Now 11:58 PM, Nathan shuffled lightly on the swivel chair, spinning himself back and forth with 180° rotations. Another whole minute passed; 11:59 PM. Nathan finally sprung up and grabbed the room's keycard. He slipped it into his pocket and exited the room, shutting the auto-lock door behind him.

Whichever Sin was next, it was still most likely going to be one that provoked people to move around. He kept surveillance on the hallway for anyone who passed by and was displaying the next Sin. Then, a blonde white woman across from Nathan opened her door to exit the room. She saw Nathan and stepped closer to him with a smug expression on her face.

"Hi there." nodded Nathan, keeping his expression neutral.

"Why so serious? Did you clog your toilet or something? That's what assholes like you deserve." she mocked, a heavy Russian accent evident.

Nathan cracked his neck, trying to remain calm. He checked his watch- still 11:59, still Pride.

"Is the plummer late? Aw, too bad, I'd let you take you use my toilet, but you know, your shit would stink my bathroom."

"And yours doesn't?" Nathan finally broke.

"That's not very lady-like to speak of. What kind of manners did your ugly mother teach you?"

Nathan lost his cool and gripped the woman by her throat, his watch counting down the last four- three- two- one- second. He tried not to hurt the woman for insulting him, remembering his personal oath- but he still held her throat, as she should now be passing into the next Sin. A mischievous smile then curved at her rosy lips:

"Anyway, I was just thinking- agh!"

She then dropped to the thin carpeted floor after Nathan compressed the triggering spot to make her dormant. He noticed her door was still propped open, so he quickly picked her up from the floor and dropped her inside before the entrance. He kicked away her yellow flip-flop and the door shut to lock itself. Nathan slid the keycard through his door's card lock and entered the room. Just then, a blinding light flashed in the room, spawning Geo in a glowing neon green suit.

"Where the shit do you get these suits from? And why always suits?" Nathan loudly whispered, moving closer to admire the suit's luminescence.

"I love suits! They're classy and express superiority- in which those are two things that perfectly describe me!" he responded.

In the silence of the room, something was noisily moving. Nathan and Geo looked over to an awakening Adrianna.

"Hey Natha- oof!" started Adrianna, falling back into a sleeping position after Geo threw his hand out.

"What did you just do?" Nathan asked out loud.

"I had to knock her out." replied Geo.

"You knocked her out? What does that mean?" returned Nathan.

"What do you mean?" Geo asked.

"I asked you first!"

"I just put her unconscious, that's all."

"'That's all?' 'Unconscious' how?"

"Fucking, unconscious! What is wrong with that?"

"Nothing, just making sure you're not hurting her. That is my wife you just knocked out right there- without permission of course."

"She's just sleeping-"

"For how long?"

"Nathan, what the fuck? Until I wake her up!"

"What if you can't? Why do you get to pick when?"

"I will wake her up! I did it to you, remember?"

"But that was me, not her- totally different physiologies."

"Listen, I just came for your kid-"

"Oh. So now you want my kid too?"

"NATHAN!"

"GEO."

"WHAT?!"

"I don't know, you addressed me first."

"Jeez, Nathan! It's near what could be the end of the world and you want to be a pain in the ass now?"

"Yes, because this is what you get for just appearing in my room when I clearly expressed my dislike for it."

"This isn't your room!"

"My PERSONAL QUARTERS then!"

"What, do you want me to knock first?"

"Yes actually, then I'll stop deliberately annoying you, like I am right now."

"Oh, fuck you, fine! Back to the point then-"

"Yes, take Vince. The Sin of Lust isn't for him to learn about yet."

"Just what I was thinking. Pleasure doing business with you...asshole."

Nathan chuckled and Geo placed a hand on Vincent and Adrianna, and they blinked out of the room. Nathan suddenly sensed a demonic presence outside. He rushed to the window and saw a horde of flying demons heading the opposite way. His battle gear summoned and he went for the door, but someone had just knocked. He looked through the peephole and saw a man and a woman.

"No. Fuck no. The window it is."

He sped for the window while the couple banged on the door, and leapt out to chase after the demons. A minute into following them, he heard loud music from afar. Focusing his vision more, he saw a nightclub- and the pack of demons were descending towards that building.

"Party invitation accepted." Nathan smirked.

He accelerated through the air until he reached the entrance of the nightclub. The theme of this party was presumably a "1980s" theme. The attendants were wearing bright colors, either really baggy or really tight outfits (more so of the latter), outdated hairstyles of different shapes, and just about every collar was pulled upwards. To add, Loverboy's 1982 hit, "Working For The Weekend" had just started blaring from the speakers inside, with its four-drum-note intro followed by its exciting burst of a keyboard and guitar instrumental. Nathan spotted the demons inside dancing with the humans.

"They can't see them? They're probably disguised." mumbled Nathan.

"Hey! Wanna dance? Your outfit looks rad!"

Nathan turned around to one of the party-goers and frowned, "Sorry, I'm taking over this party now." he replied, unholstering a pistol and shooting three bullets at the ceiling.

Everyone panicked and began emptying out of the club while the music still played. Nathan noticed through the scurrying people that three demons stood right across from him, staring down the infamous hunter. More continued to gather as people were running, until Nathan quickly counted twenty-seven identical devils circling him, the building finally empty.

"Enough standing around, let's do this." Nathan challenged.

The chorus of the song kicked up and Nathan began with a combat roll forward to evade the demons coming from his sides, rolled to a stand, and tackled the middle of the three demons in front of him. Nathan fearlessly stared into its fiery eyes, taunting it with his empowerment. Nathan took too much pleasure however in planning how to deal with this demon, and the remaining two demons yanked him off their comrade and threw him high above the dancefloor. Nathan's wings shot out to break his fall, but another demon swooped in to catch him, then drove him right into a brick wall.

The lower half of Nathan's body hung out while the rest of him was fixed inside the wall. A darker colored demon- nearly brown- flew to the high wall and pulled Nathan out and let him drop on a glass table below. The song in the background continued:

"You want a piece of my heart?/You better start from the start!..."

Nathan started to stand and saw the darker demon diving to him.

"You wanna be in the show?/C'mon baby, let's go!"

Nathan caught the demon by its shoulders and rammed its body into the wall when the guitar solo began, then he reshaped his pistols into a rocket launcher.

"Die, bitch!" he spat, then shot a rocket at the demon- confident that it was defeated.

With the explosion at such a short range, Nathan's body blasted back out, allowing him to flip over the DJ set. In mid-air, he morphed his mercury weapons into twin submachine guns, dived back to the dancefloor, straightened up again, and spun around in a fury of a relentless gunfire. In the storm of bullets, Nathan managed to kill four of them. The second verse of the song proceeded as the demons flew around to avoid being shot:

"Everyone's lookin'-/To see if it was you.../Everyone wants you-/To come through!"

Nathan front-flipped forward, predicting a surprise demon was behind him- as he indeed caught one with his spiked boot to its chin, then followed the momentum of the flip to fling the demon at another one. Another one tried to spawn in front of Nate from the dancefloor, but the latter stopped it by punting its entire head off its neck, letting it disintegrate back to Hell. The chorus escalated again as the demons swarmed Nathan all at once:

"Everybody's Working For The Weekend!..."

Nathan caught one by its singular horn and forced it onto its back. One jumped on his back, so he reached for his Blazer and pulled it to himself while lighting it up, to slice the demon while in the motion- and with the same Blazer, Nathan drove it into the forehead of the demon he was pinning down.

Nate rose back up to another demon running his way and responded by slashing his weapon upwards to cut the creature's face in half. With his free hand, he lifted back his fist into the face of another one behind him, elbowed it, elbowed it again, and elbowed it harder again to make it step back while Nathan morphed a revolver and popped off its head with one shot. Its blood of lava splattered onto Nathan's face and the floor, burning through the sheet vinyl. Nathan however, painlessly wiped the lava off and continued with the next two devils in front of him.

He lunged forward for a headbutt, cracking the left demon's horn, then Nathan whipped around to throw a backfist at the one on the right, followed through with the spin with the Blazer in his left hand, and sliced through both of their necks, bodies dropping.

Something landed on Nathan's shoulders, then scraped at his face with one claw piercing an eyeball. Nathan ragefully cursed out as dark blood poured from his right eye. He let himself fall backwards to bodyslam the demon, then rolled away to let his eye heal. To his mistake, he forgot his healing was slowed, and a demon with a black dagger stabbed his left knee when he tried to stand. Nathan dropped to a kneel, morphed a shotgun and shot the creature above him, flipped and caught it to hold the barrel's end, and cracked the demon in front of him with the weapon.

Nate heard the familiar cry of the monsters behind him again, but this time it wrapped itself around Nathan to keep him on the ground. Four more flew in to hold Nathan up by his limbs and started stretching him out as far as possible while he resisted. Nate was able to try and overcome three of them, but it was his injured knee that weakened him while the pinkish demon attempted to tear his shin off the knee.

That was when a green twin sofa with a wooden frame soared through the air. The demons held Nathan tighter as he tried to wriggle, but with one overpowering tug from each direction, Nathan brought all five demons close together and the sofa bashed into all of them. After a still moment, three bodies crawled out from the dismantled furniture; it was two impaired demons and Nathan.

Loverboy guitarist, Paul Dean let out a prolonged strum of his guitar for the outro of the song, with Matt Frenette's final drum strikes, then the song ceased with a simultaneous note of both of those instruments. As if on cue with the end of "Working For The Weekend", something started quaking the club ground, as it stomped its way to the DJ table while the next song started and destroyed it before Twisted Sister's Dee Snider could begin to sing the 1984 success, "We're Not Gonna Take It."

Nathan could barely manage to crawl any further to space himself from whatever was in the room. Instead, he decided to try and flip himself over. When he reached his side, he tilted his head to peek ahead of him, and was met with an oversized, barbed-wired club that whacked away Nathan and the other two demons. The demons died out while Nathan spiraled across the building to smack against the opposite wall of concrete, and fall onto a set of steel chairs.

"What...in the...fuck?" he coughed out blood on the floor.

His face was battered and his body was beaten, bruises and cuts all over his skin, gradually healing. He shoved away a chair and saw just five demons left overall, but there was a colossal one-eyed beast standing above them.

"A...cy-cyclops? Shit got...real." he hawked.

For a moment he shut his eyes, but upon reopening them, he now noticed there were four demons. He thought he miscounted, but upon blinking again, one of them had just vanished- as one of their heads were flung across the room and landed with a roll right next to Nathan. Nathan felt his knee cap finally snap back into place, and he slowly went to stand when heard the sound of something being torn. When Nathan looked up, another demon was down. Nathan tried to feel out the room for any new soul or energy that wasn't there before, but he couldn't concentrate with his current headache from the sofa attack. He almost stumbled over with dizziness, but the unexpected roar of the cyclops startled him, as it was now holding its eye in agony, and the last demon was noticeably gone too.

Nathan suddenly felt a spark of an immense power and from the center of the dancefloor, Hades arose.

He teleported over to Nathan in a black cloud, "Worry not, I am over the issues I had with Olympus. I understand if you do not trust me right now, but I am here to help you stay alive, Nathaniel."

Nathan's eyebrows furrowed, "Really? Is that so? So, you just took out those demons?"

"Demons? I do not see any demons, I came for the cyclops."

"What? You didn't just kill those demons? There were five of them!"

"Sorry, but you are greatly mistaken. How hard did the cyclops hit you?"

"Then who-"

"Solve that on your own, I came for that beast over there. Until next time, young half-blood."

Hades pointed his two-pronged pitchfork at the howling cyclops and it suddenly ignited with fire, to then disappear within it as soon as Hades did. At the corner of his eye, Nathan saw someone leave the building. He tried to sense their aura, but the person was quick to leave the area and leave their anonymity behind.

*Six...
