Chapter 16
Caleb was exhausted. Each tree had begun to look the same in the winding forest in Lymeria. Kara's father was fairly certain that he was lost, but he couldn't give up, not when his daughter's life could be on the line. He had lost Foster a while ago. He had searched for the boy, calling his name and squinting to see past tree branches in his away. Eventually, he'd been forced to call off the search, as the sun was setting and deadly creatures tended to emerge at night if one made enough noise. Caleb thought of the terrible monsters he had seen back when Emily had led him through these woods. He hadn't been afraid then, since any evil thing that dared to come close would've been burnt to a crisp by her. However, things were different now.
Now Emily was gone, and he was without her magic, and alone.
He had never been more afraid, but he didn't dare show it.
Caleb stumbled forward. A tree root had tripped him. He gritted his teeth and forced himself onward. To his relief, a house had appeared in the distance. He ran, relieved behind words to finally find civilization. Suddenly a chill swept over him. A low voice-like thunder but much, much worse-echoed through his mind.
"Hello, Caleb."
Caleb stiffened. That voice...he somehow recognized it, but couldn't think of a name or a face to go with it. "Who...who are you?" he gasped. "Show yourself!" The shadows that had started to engulf the trunks of the surrounding trees were swept up into a human-like shape. Horns curled up from the dark figure's head, and bright yellow eyes opened, piercing the darkness. A toothy grin appeared, and then the shadows fell away. The creature was hunched over, clothed in a black cloak with a hood. It wore black pants and dress shoes, and spikes ran across its back. Caleb stepped back.
This was a demise beast, and a famous one, at that.
"You," he said.
Anger made his hands become fists at his sides. "You're Hurricane."
"So you remember me."
The monster straightened up and smirked. Its yellow eyes glittered coldly.
"I thought you'd forgotten."
"How could I forget? That war...the lives lost, the humans and fairies you murdered...and Emily..." Caleb was shaking at the thought. "You killed her when she was in no condition to fight. It was unfair." Hurricane chuckled.
He moved to stand beside him and laughed some more. It was hoarse laughter, and his eyes flickered with flashes of blue.
"She was your leader, and we simply took advantage of her temporary condition.
Besides, her child lived, did she not?
We let her survive for that long."
Caleb sighed. "Yes. Look, a monster like you wouldn't just come to me for no reason.
What do you want?"
Hurricane grinned and slyly strummed his spindly fingers against his arm. "Nothing major...just the location of your daughter."
Caleb's eyes widened, then narrowed. "No. Kara isn't yours, and she never will be."
The beast king shook his head. "No...not her. That foolish girl will meet with her end soon enough. It's your other child I'm after, the one who is actually useful."
Caleb's breath hitched in his throat, as if his heart had skipped a beat.
He couldn't...this monster couldn't possibly know about her.
"I do, Caleb." Hurricane seemed to purr. "Because of the agreement I've made, I've received all the information I needed from very informative sources."
His smile fell away, and his eyes glinted dangerously, his sharp teeth bared.
"Don't play games with me, Flightless.
Where is Adene?"
Caleb was bewildered, shaken to his core.
"I-I don't know. I haven't seen her in ages."
He found his composure again and spoke. "Hurricane, she's hardly my daughter. She may biologically be mine, but she never wanted anything to do with me.
Adene's more fairy than human, and the powers you think she has are limited.
Don't punish her because of my arrival here. Leave her be."
"Oh, you see I could do that, but...that's no fun." He grabbed Caleb's shirt collar and threw him to the ground. Caleb groaned as pain shot through his jaw. He had fallen onto a tree root, and it had grazed the side of his face.
"You're a foolish old man if you think that Adene's powers over fire haven't progressed past her infant years. That was the last time you saw her, and look at her now!"
Hurricane snapped his fingers, and the bluish shape of a fairy girl appeared out of the palm of his hand. The recreation of her grew more detailed, and gained color. Adene was a young woman, hardly a teen anymore.
She was shooting tendrils of red and blue fire from her hands, and her wild red hair flew about around her. She was circling a massive black dragon that roared and flapped its giant wings. The monster opened its mouth, and a stream of blue fire erupted forth. Adene didn't move, and the fire enveloped her in a mass of smoldering flame.
Caleb cringed, but he didn't look away.
He couldn't.
After a long while, his eldest daughter stepped out of the flames, unharmed and well.
Her eyes glittered like the flickering embers had just moments before.
"What...how did she..."
Caleb felt a rush of pride throughout his being. Emily had been as powerful as her, maybe even more so. It was good for Adene to be developing these powers, but...he couldn't really relate to her anymore.
She was his daughter, yet seemed so far estranged from him that calling her his daughter felt like a false statement.
"Do you see now, Caleb?" Hurricane hissed. "This girl...her powers would be put to good use in my hands. I could train her, teach her to harness her fire and have the very world at her beck and call. She would be the most powerful fairy in existence."
Caleb began to back away out of fear. "No!
You can't do that! I-I won't let you!"
"Yes, you will. We both know you're not strong enough to protect her. The only member of your family that was ever a real threat was Emily." He chuckled. "You can't be a threat when your throat is torn open, though."
Caleb clenched his fists. Shaking out of rage, he moved to hit him. However, Hurricane caught his fist with one hand.
The demise beast leader raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, so you're going to fight back, are you?"
His scaly face displayed his malevolent nature. "Fine, then I'll see to it that you don't remain alive for long."
Caleb's eyes widened. He opened his mouth to speak, but then backed away in horror as Hurricane's yellow eyes glowed harshly.
He found that he couldn't look away from them, and at once, he was hypnotized by the evil creature's gaze.
Hurricane cackled, then snapped his fingers. Caleb's blue eyes reflected the flickering light in his, then closed. He fell forward.
Hurricane lifted him up in the air with magic, then walked away, his shadowy clothes trailing behind him. He had plans, and they were quickly becoming reality.
Yes, he would destroy Kara by taking what was dear to her heart and then demolishing it all completely, until she had no choice left but to succumb to him and his forces.
She would have no one left to protect her, and her powers would be his for the taking.
Not only did he have Kara in his clutches, but he had the fairy queen, too. Iona was weakened, her powers slowly being drained for his own use. Without a queen, the fairy world would fall apart. He was named for a storm, and a storm was coming.
It would wipe out all the life in Lymeria and the Flightless world, and he would rise from the ashes with an unstoppable army and corpses at his feet. Yes, there would be a storm of his own creation, a hurricane of massive proportions, but he would be in the eye of it.
