Chapter 8

The blue magic that Shade had been imprisoned in dissolved into nothing in a matter of seconds, leaving no trace of the boy. Kara had collapsed on the roof, sobbing, but looked up in horror when Shade had screamed. It was a yell that could only come from someone who was being mutilated. He was being killed, and the monster that was controlling Danny was making it happen. "Shade. He's...dead," Kara realized. "You killed him." "Well, of course I did, foolish child," the thing that was Danny told her in a boastful way. "He was going to kill me anyway. Either me or him. Oh, my kind will be so pleased with me when they find out about what I've done today. I'll be rewarded after I bring my master what he asked for...you." Danny gave her an evil grin, his malevolent yellow eyes glinting. "You're half fairy, huh? It sure doesn't look like it." "You're insane. You just killed my-my guardian, terrorized my two best friends, and now are accusing me of being a fairy? I'm not a mythical creature, and I'm not anyone important." "But you are. You're more important than you realize." Danny came closer to her, and Kara backed away in fear as he did so. He was already starting to shift back into his monster self, his teeth sharpening, his horns sprouting out of the sides of his head. He had shot up a few inches as well, taller than her now. His hands were becoming claws as he brought his hand up to stroke the side of her face. She shied away from him, but he still managed to touch her cheek for a second. "Your skin is so smooth," he hissed. "So strange." "Says the monster boy who can get stabbed and live," Kara said meanly. Danny made a little growling noise. "You don't know who you're talking to." "I don't care who I'm talking to," she snapped. Danny scowled, and his hands instantly shot forward around her throat.

Kara gasped for air, her eyes bulging out of her head as the beast's grip tightened. "You mean nothing to me," Danny roared. "Only my leader sees any value in you. I could kill you right now." "But you won't," Kara wheezed. "I'm valuable to your master, so you have to keep me alive. Right?" Danny released her neck, shoving her to the ground instead. "Right," he snarled. "But once you have been brought to my master, you are easy prey to what thrives there if you do not obey us." He looked thoughtful, then grinned. "It's about time you met him." Danny reached for Kara's arm, but she moved away frantically. "No! I'll never come with you! I'd rather die!" she cried. "You'll wish you were dead after my master is done with you," Danny replied confidently. "And you will come with me. There is no escape for you." Danny fully became his monster self again, lights flickering around him. He roared and then went after her with a frighteningly fast lunge. Kara rushed to find Shade's sword. He hadn't been holding it while the beast had hurt him, so it had to still be here. Something glittered from the sun, and Kara smiled and ran to get the weapon. She crouched down and reached to grab it, but then paused. Shade had told her that she would die if she touched the sword, but...what choice did she have? Danny would be there any moment now. Her heart pounding, Kara placed her hands on its hilt, expecting to be burnt to a crisp. She closed her eyes and braced herself. When nothing happened, she breathed a sigh of relief, but had some difficulty yanking the sword out of the roof. The sword came free just as the monster that had once been Danny was nearly upon her. Kara, almost blinded by the sword's brilliance, swung it upwards so that she could hold it more easily, and moved quickly away from Danny. The weapon felt firm and strong in her hands. I'm holding the sword, Kara thought. Maybe I am half fairy. "You are," Danny told her, making her realize that she had spoken her thoughts out loud. "That is why my master plans on your capture!" He soared up, his bulky demonic wings lifting him up only a little before he came swooping down right in front of Kara, his arms outstretched and ready to grab her. Kara moved aside, then jabbed the sword forward to protect herself. That was all she had done it for, protection-but it had done much more than protect her. Danny let out a harsh, ragged gasp. The fairy sword had gone right through Danny's chest, close to his old wound. From the looks of it, the blade had sunken deep into his scaly front. Kara let go of the sword and backed away. What had she done? Danny made a strained choking sound and tore the sword out of his chest, his face revealing his agony. The sword fell from his hands, falling to the roof with a clattering sound. "W-What? What did you-" He let out a groan and shuddered, rocking back and forth where he stood, becoming human, although his horns and yellow eyes remained. Kara went beside him. "Oh God, oh God, oh God, no...I, I wasn't trying to-"

"Stupid girl!" Danny spat. It slowly became a normal teenage boy's voice as he faced her and continued to yell hoarsely. "You grieve for a long dead boy! He died the moment I took control of him!" "No! You're a liar!" Kara screamed back. "If he really was...g-gone, then I would have known."

Danny shook his head. His stag horns were shrinking and disappearing, and he staggered, his eyes starting to look glassy. "Stupid Hybrid," he muttered. "Stupid g-girl..." He stumbled and collapsed weakly on the roof at last with a somehow satisfying little thump. He examined the wide hole in his chest from Shade's sword. "Ah...ow..."

Kara didn't dare follow his gaze. At the next words he said, she froze with horror. "You've done what your little fairy protector couldn't do. You've gotten my heart."

Foster arrived just in time to see Kara running from Danny. He had to step in and save her! Before he could, she saved herself, grabbing a gleaming sword. Where did that come from? He thought. And where's Shade?

These thoughts soon weren't important, because Kara did something insane soon after. She took the sword in her hands and stabbed Danny right through his now scaly chest. Blood splattered onto her jacket, and Foster's blue eyes went wide. His girlfriend had just killed a monster! Like a boss battle in a video game. The occurrence had been violent, but at the same time, really cool. He continued to watch, noticing how the thing didn't die right away. What sort of monster, or anything living, didn't die after being stabbed or impaled? Whatever he was, apparently.

Kara was confused and sickened. "What do you mean?" "I mean you impaled my heart, nitwit. All the way...through..." As Danny dragged himself up, his face turned as pale as a sheet as he examined his wound. "Oh, good Lord..." "Then how are you still able to live?" Kara was visibly shaking. Although he had been a monster, this creature was dying now-dying-because of her. Danny chuckled at her fear. "Demise beasts have a high pain tolerance. I am alive now, but I won't be for much longer." Kara decided to question him, since she was still left without certain information. "What were your plans?" "To capture you...because you are important..." "Important? Important how?" Danny's host was wracked with bloody coughing. When he could speak again, his voice had grown quieter and much weaker. "You are the one that...will save all from destruction..." "Destruction?" Kara was becoming desperate. Danny-or whoever this actually was-was fading fast, and she still didn't have any answers. "I...I don't understand what you mean." "The mage foretold of a prophecy about the end...my master needs your power for..the prophecy..."

Kara tried desperately to understand the dying monster's words, but they made little sense to her, and he was no help since he was almost gone. A prophecy? About her? Danny's eyes were becoming lifeless. She was running out of time to talk, so she gave up on that and instead took pity on him. "I'm sorry that you have to die this way," she murmured. "If there could be any other way-" Danny interrupted her with a raspy laugh. "There is no other way. Nothing else can kill a demise beast. They always die like this. In any other world, I would always die...like this..." He coughed, then spoke again. "Perhaps it is time...for the fay to take charge. Perhaps...it is not so wrong after all..." He sucked in a breath of air quickly, but it didn't help him much. "This is it. Why couldn't...that fairy boy...kill me? Vengeance sure...helped you...but I may as well tell you something. Others will come after you, Hybrid girl...perhaps the fairies could...save you from your fate." Danny winced, then shivered frailly. "I, Jasper...release Danny now. He was...useless anyway. I am...no...more..." Danny convulsed on the roof, falling forward. His eyes fluttered closed, but Kara glimpsed them. They were still a bright yellow, but now they were glassy from death. The color of them was fading, turning back to their regular brown color. When they closed, Kara saw Danny's torn open chest. His heart was visible inside of his chest, skin and muscle torn away to reveal it. Kara wanted to look away, but for some reason, she couldn't. There was a hole punctured through the organ, a jagged hole that had been put there by the sword. The heart was not a human one. It was far too swollen and misshapen, with more valves than usual and a greenish tint to it. Kara turned away and started to cry. She couldn't help herself. Even though this had been a horrible monster wearing Danny's face, he had died in front of her, and had taken the real Danny with him. Kara sobbed bitterly, crying over the battered, limp corpse of her former crush. She grabbed his arms and laid them across his chest in an x formation, then leaned forward to look at him. Would I have to bury him? She cried again, moving her hands away from Danny to rub at her eyes. There was a slight spark as she did so, a little flash of energy. Kara blinked, and looked where the flash had been. What was that? She decided that she had just imagined it and continued to look mournfully at the dead boy.
