Chapter 4/Chapter 5

Kara sat in her second period. Social studies. Ugh. As much as she loved history and her teacher, Mr. Harrison, he sometimes went on and on when he lectured them about certain things. Today was no exception. He babbled on and on about some war where everyone died and blah, blah, blah-and Kara had to crush her fingers ever so slightly between the pale plastic top of her desk and the matching underside where some glue holding them together had worn away to wake up a bit. In a twisted way, pain helped keep her focused in class. She stifled a cry and pulled her now red and somewhat puffy fingers out from underneath the two sections of desk. Okay, she'd overdone it this time. Mr. Harrison paused in his jabbering for a bit. "Class, I'd like you all to meet Shade. He's a foreign exchange student from Europe who has recently moved here and is eager to learn. I know that all of you will treat him with respect." Everyone murmured things like "hi" and "weird name" as he went to find a seat. The closest empty desk was beside Kara. He sat down with grace that she had never seen in any gawky freshmen before. He looked to be about fifteen, but his eyes revealed that he had the wisdom of much older men. His stark black hair cascaded over his forehead and across one of his eyes. His shirt, pants, all of his clothes-were black like his hair. He placed his things at his seat and passed an emerald green sticky note to her. Kara was still a bit out of it from it being so early in the morning, but his alluring looks had truly woken her up better than her physical pain had. Kara read the note, and was shocked by what was written on it.

lιĸe yoυr тeacнer ѕaιd, мy naмe ιѕ ѕнade, вυт тнaт coυld cнange. тнe poιnт ιѕ, ι'м yoυr gυardιan нere, and yoυ're dιғғerenт ғroм oтнer тeenagerѕ, вυт a good dιғғerenт. yoυ'll υnderѕтand ѕoon enoυgн.

Kara blinked in confusion. Looking at it again, she read it over once more and couldn't believe it. What did he mean, that he was her guardian? And how was she different from other teenagers? Was he crazy? Kara turned to Shade to ask him what on Earth he meant by this, that if it was a practical joke or something, she'd make him sorry he'd messed with her- but he was gone. His desk was empty, his meager belongings absent as well. Kara looked on in shock, then glanced back at the note. The little paper seemed to shimmer as she looked at it again, and letters formed as she watched, neat silver letters that were slightly different than the ones from before. The note now said,

mєєt mє αt lunch, αnd í'll єхplαín єvєrчthíng.

Chapter 5

Lily ran down the hallway. Due to some prolonged fixing of her eye makeup, she was late for her third period class. Her designer sandals slapping against the floor as she ran, she turned a corner and continued to race through the school. Suddenly, someone grabbed her sleeve, and she was yanked out of the hall and fell to the floor. Lily screamed, and the stranger covered her mouth. "Shh, it's just me," the person whispered. "Don't say it's just me if I don't know who you are," Lily snapped, pushing the person's hand away. "It's Danny." Oh. Kara's old crush. Lily stood up and turned around to face him. "Oh. What do you want, Danny?" "Just to talk to you," he promised. There was a puff of smoke, and it billowed into Lily's face, causing her to cough and wheeze. Looking around, she realized that Danny was no longer there. "Danny?" she said. She was a little afraid now. "Danny, I'll totally go out with you if that's what you want-" There was a slight noise, the sound of nails scratching against the floor. Danny appeared in front of her, but there was something different about the softmore now, something sinister. "Where is she?" he hissed. "Where is the half fairy Flightless girl?" "Okay, I don't know what you're talking about, Danny," Lily said. "Is there something wrong with you? Are you sick or something? Because nothing that came out of your mouth just now made sense." A revolting smile crossed Danny's face. "You are the girl's best friend. Surely you know where she is." "Who? Kara? What do you want with her?" Lily was terrified. "Nothing. At least, nothing that concerns you, a Flightless." Danny narrowed his eyes, which were now a bright yellow instead of his regular dark brown ones. "A F-Flightless?" Lily stammered. "What's that?" "A human. A creature with a sad, frail existence. Now tell me where Kara is." Lily crossed her arms. "No, I won't." Danny's yellow eyes widened, then narrowed as he laughed. "No? Well, that just won't do." The hallway suddenly turned as dark as twilight, the electricity flickering out. Lily watched in horror as Danny's body was seized with convulsions. Black mist surrounded him as he screamed and clawed at his face. There were flashes of light, and Lily flinched. She couldn't see much from where she stood. What was happening to him? What was going on here? When the mist cleared and the light faded, Danny appeared again, illuminated by the lighting in the hallway when it turned back on. He was greatly changed. His fingers and toes were now sharp claws. He had curved curling horns jutting out of the sides of his skull. His skin was now a dark gray and scaly. His teeth were frightening fangs, and he bared them at her as he stepped closer. Jagged demonic wings jutted out of his back, and he unfurled them. He had grown three feet taller than his normal five foot height, and he now towered over Lily. His shirt had torn away, but his tattered jeans still remained. His laughter sounded like nails scraping on a chalkboard. When he spoke again, his voice was raspy, but still relatively the same. "Are you sure that you won't tell me now?" Lily couldn't breathe or speak. She could only stare, wide eyed and open mouthed, at Danny's now monstrous form. Danny grinned evilly. "Fine. Then I suppose I'll have to torture you for it." Danny extended one taloned hand, grabbing Lily by her shirt. Lily shrieked as she was lifted up into the air. Danny ripped the ceiling open and flew off, Lily in his clutches.

Meet me at lunch, and I'll explain everything. The words echoed through Kara's head as she headed to her next class. Third period. She had to talk to Lily about this. Yeah, she'd say she was crazy for even believing it (which she had slightly) but maybe she could offer some sort of advice. That had always been what Lily was good at: advice. Her health teacher glared at her as she entered the room. "Ms. Tilling?" "Yes, Mr. Darwin?" The older man scowled. "You're late. About ten minutes late, to be precise. Sit down in your desk and copy the class notes from someone here who has them." Kara shot an angry look at him, saying not so nice things about her teacher in her head, plopping down in her seat. She looked around the classroom, searching for Lily. When her eyes found her friend's desk, it was empty. Had Lily skipped class today? No, she wouldn't do that without telling me in advance, Kara thought. But if that wasn't the case, then where was she? Kara found herself wishing that Foster was in this class, but he wasn't. He was in her fourth period though, but she couldn't go to find him now. She copied the notes from a random kid in class who was talking to the girl across from her, and she asked to be excused to use the restroom. The assistant teacher that noticed her raised hand nodded, and Kara leapt from her seat, running out the door. When she reached the hallway, her mind was suddenly filled with strange distorted images and sound. Kara crumpled to the floor, holding her head and crying out in pain. When the agony from the intensity of the pictures and the noises faded, Kara realized what they were of. Was that...Lily? It was Lily! The only weird thing was that her friend's black hair was scraggly and her blue eyes were wide with fear. Fear? What could she possibly be afraid of? Suddenly roaring resounded through her head, the screeching laughter of a monster. Kara, shocked, stood up and ran to Lily's locker. She would've come from there to third period normally. Kara went where she thought that Lily would go, eventually losing her way. Then she noticed a gaping hole in the ceiling. The hole let in damp, musty air from outside, and some bits of dust and plaster floated around her like wayward snowflakes. Kara thought about this. Lily couldn't have made this hole, but whatever had taken her could have. She was still unsure of how she knew all of this. She had seen a towering human-like creature in her mind, holding Lily in its grasp. But how had she seen this if she hadn't been there? Kara shook her confused thoughts away. For whatever reason, she knew what had happened to Lily, and she was going to rescue her, but she'd need some help.
