Chapter 20

Rowan paced inside of her home. She had been restless and short tempered lately due to the long term company of Kara. She shouldn't be here! No matter what Sylvan or Reena's family thought she was, she was only a Flightless. A weak, stupid Flightless that needed to go back where she belonged. Rowan felt the knives on her belt for comfort, their sheathed points grazing her hand slightly. Every fairy was taught how to fight early on in their lives. If she wanted to, she could kill the girl in her sleep, make it look like an accident. No, she wouldn't do that. Kara was so helpless. It would be like killing a newborn baby. Perhaps she could be useful with the proper training. Rowan unsheathed a knife and tossed it at a target on her bedroom wall, hitting its center.

Mrs. Fern was there in the kitchen, passing out waffles with little squares of butter and lots of syrup on them on plates on the table. Kara was shocked. "You have waffles here?" "Yes. The fairy realm trades with the human world all the time, but in secret, of course." Reena yawned. "She's right. Hey, Kara, I have to show you more of our world today. You should meet my teacher." "Your teacher?" "Yeah, my flying instructor." Kara was excited, but was worried as well. "Are you sure that they would want me around?" she asked. "I mean, I'm human, or at least half human, and they'd know that just by looking at me." Reena smiled. "Okay, don't get ahead of yourself. Sylvan's usually wrong about this sort of thing, so don't let it go to your head. Besides, my teacher is nice. She'll accept you. I'm sure of it." April picked at her waffle with her wooden fork, then looked up at her big sister with a pleading expression. "Can I come with you, Reena? Oh, please, please, please! It's so boring to just sit around here at our house." Reena smirked, ruffling her sister's hair. "Not this time, sis. Who would help Mom clean the house?" She snapped her fingers, and her flannel pajamas changed into her regular black clothes, her knives strapped to her thin waist. Kara left to get changed, but Mrs. Fern stopped her. "Hold on, Kara. I washed your clothes yesterday, and they're still hanging up outside to dry. You can take these for now." She held out a pale pink and white blouse and dark jeans to Kara, and she took them. White sneakers also came with the clothes. She quickly changed into them, but grabbed her rose lined jacket. It was comforting to wear, and it was the only thing she had now that reminded her of home. Reena headed outside, and Kara followed closely behind her.
