Kara opened her locker the next day. It was close to the end of September, and it was becoming chilly, even inside of her school. She took folders and binders out that she needed for the day and closed her locker again. Lily did the same. Her clothes were still summer based, her top pink and lavender. The only thing that was different about her was that she had one of her legs in a cast due to the condition of the damaged limb. She smiled, looking at herself in a mirror. "Kara, are you ready for the retake test today? Kara?" Kara didn't answer, barely looking in her friend's direction. "I guess," she mumbled. Lily was immediately concerned. "Kara, are you okay? I thought you'd be happy, since everything's normal now."
"Not everything," she pointed out. "Shade is-" "Oh, give up Shade already," Lily snapped. "Yes, I know he saved our lives from a horrible monster and all, but you have to get over him. It's been a while now, and since he hasn't shown up, you are just going to have to deal with it." Kara sighed, but nodded. "I already know that I have to get over him. It's just...hard. He saved my life, and he might be dead because he protected me." Lily glared at her. "He didn't do the greatest job of protecting all of us. Foster and me got hurt because of that...thing. I guess he considered you more important for some reason." "He was trying to protect all of us!" Kara nervously protested. A few days back, she would've told Lily what she knew or well, thought she did, but she realized that she couldn't do that now. She couldn't just tell Lily that she was supposedly half fairy and had undiscovered magic powers. "Maybe he just thought of my safety first, since he didn't know you guys at the time!" Lily folded her arms over her chest crossly, rolling her eyes as she gathered up her things. "I bet. I'll see you later, Kara. Before I go, here's a little tip. Don't bring up Shade around Foster. You two are still dating, last I checked. Remember that." She sauntered away, her high heeled shoes tapping on the floor. Kara felt a little pang of sorrow. No matter how mad Lily got at her, she would still always look out for her. Foster appeared in the hallway right then. "Hi, Kara." "Oh. Hi, Foster." Kara blushed. He was always so cute, with his handsome baby blue eyes, his dark brown hair, and his little dimples on his cheeks. She didn't know what she'd do without him. Lily was right. She would have to keep quiet about her Shade worries if she wanted to keep dating Foster. She'd have to forget about him completely. No one could like two people at once. Three, if I'm counting Danny. What am I going to do? "Are you okay?" Foster interrupted. "You look deep in thought. Is something bothering you?" "Yeah," Kara admitted. "You know me too well." They both laughed. "What is it, then?" Foster asked. "What's bugging you?"
"It's a lot of things, really," Kara told him. "I don't know if I should tell you. I doubt anyone could understand." She turned away, but Foster came in front of her, his eyes examining her face with concern beneath his new thick rimmed black glasses. "I can. Really, just tell me. I'll try my best to help you." Kara sighed, then took in a deep breath. What should she tell him? Maybe the weirdest thing first. "When I was fighting off the mutant monster thing that was Danny, he told me that I was part of this messed up prophecy. His master wanted my power. To explain it better, I suppose my abilities that I don't know about yet. This got me thinking- I never really knew my mom too well, since I was really little when she passed away. Maybe there's something left of hers in my house that could explain all of this. Do you think so?" Foster seemed to understand. "Wow," he murmured. "That's a lot to take in. If you had said this to me last summer, I would've laughed and asked if you'd suntanned too much." "And now?" "Now...now, I think I believe you." He straightened his glasses. "Let's go back to what you said about your mom...maybe you're on the right track, but finding something that was hers in your house that could help us understand this gibberish would require some investigation. Maybe I could come over to your house after school to help you find something?" Kara nodded. "Okay. My attic's bound to have something in it that belongs to her. We can search there." Foster grabbed his binder for class. "Alright! See you then!" he called as he walked away. "See you!" Kara replied.
