Facts and Tidbits: Sorrow and Song
A little chapter on little things about the last book in the Ceristen Saga. Including a lot to do with Mordred & Sons.
||| Mordred, as I mentioned in the Facts and Tidbits chapter, has a clear high tenor voice in singing. Now, Douglas is in approximately the same register as his father, and their voices sound very similar, but Douglas' has a huskier quality. If you watch the video at top, the voice that sings the 2nd verse is exactly like Douglas'. The tenor that you can pick out on the latter half of the 2nd refrain is Mordred's. And yes, these voices were a complete providential find. I was ecstatic when I heard them. XD Derek is lower than both of them, a medium baritone, but his voice has a very clear, hard ring to it. I haven't found anyone that fits him yet...
If you want a better listen to Mordred's voice, he's in this one too, at the 1:24 mark.

||| Inspector Dickson and Captain Murray were originally brothers. They were supposed to have been orphaned and separated at a young age after the death of their parents. While it was a fun twist, I scrapped it for several reasons. One, it was easier and more logical for Inspector Dickson to be fully native to Delgrass. Two, the reveal was supposed to come at the end of The War: it added nothing to the plot of either The War or SaS, and was another headache to weave in and keep track of. Three, it was in fact counter-productive to Inspector Dickson's eventual departure of Ceristen.
||| Mordred is pretty handsome; now, that being said, I don't care to use handsome as a stock descriptor for him. His is a face of easy mobility, graceful lines, and specific, striking features, all of which are more integral to painting a picture of him than his outright comeliness. On the other hand, Derek is the kind of guy who people will always refer to as "handsome". He is superbly good-looking. In an evening suit he would cut the perfect picture of a young, debonair American millionaire.
(Mordred, contrariwise, would just manage to look a little awkward. Black isn't really his color... We had this whole hilarious modern AU argument between him and Lethira about Mordred wanting to wear blue instead of black to a reception)
Meanwhile, Douglas isn't really handsome, ugly, or plain. He's got more irregular features compared to his father and Derek, but his face definitely isn't unpleasant to look at. With eyes more deep-set under the brow, a nose wider and a trifle less streamlined, and his father's wide, readily smiling mouth, often bared in a crooked, engaging grin, his face has a striking quality that makes it instantly arresting and memorable. Plus, he just gives off "nice" vibes. He exudes buoyancy constantly. He's the one they remember as an all-around nice guy. And while modern-Mordred is finicky about clothing, Douglas' easy air makes him look good in literally anything.
