chapter four | an awkward dinner

Bruno's Pizza was a small joint in downtown Woodsboro, and it appeared to be a very popular place to go for the locals given how there were not many available tables or booths left. Fallon's worries faded away the moment she let the smell of pizza and pasta inside her nostrils. She spotted Liam and Maggie at a table near the wall, to which the three headed that way when Liam waved them over. The three took their seats across from the couple, settling in as the waitress came by and took their drink orders.

"You made it," Liam exclaimed.

"Yeah, and I brought some travelers with me," Spencer replied, motioning at the two girls on his right.

"The more, the merrier," Maggie commented, grinning.

Everyone took a moment to look over the menu, with the waitress returning to get everyone's food orders. Once she was gone again, the five began to chat on a new topic of conversation.

"So how did your visit with Dewey go today?" Maggie spoke up, eyebrows raised with curiosity.

Awkward glances were exchanged at the question, and they all waited for someone to tell her about it.

Then Liam shook his head and let out a nervous chuckle. "Not in the way we hoped."

Maggie's face fell in disappointment. "Damn. I really thought some visitors would be good for him." She paused and looked over at Fallon. "I'm sorry you didn't get your interview."

Fallon scoffed in response. "Yeah, well, that was my mom's doing." She was still bitter about what her mom did, and she only grew more irritated the more she thought about the interview her mother robbed her of.

Jamie gave Fallon a sympathetic look. "It's just one setback."

"It's a major setback."

"But you'll figure it out," Jamie assured her. "You always do."

Fallon merely nodded her head, unsure of how exactly she'd be able to find something else that would replace a big interview like this.

Spencer took a gulp of his water as he glanced over at Fallon, clearing his throat before speaking. "If you don't mind me asking, why does your mom not want you to write this article?"

The brunette felt her heart race as all eyes went to her, having to think of how to answer the one question she had been asked many times already since coming to town. But before she could open her mouth to say anything, the front door of the restaurant flew open, and the group turned to see Cheyenne from the library standing inside, eyes wide and mouth agape as she looked right at Fallon, making her way to the table.

"You're Sidney Prescott's daughter," was all she said.

With reluctance, Fallon sheepishly nodded her head and gave her an awkward smile, though she kept repeating the word fuck over and over in her head.

"Way to announce it so that everyone can hear you," Liam spoke up with a hint of sarcasm. "You wanna tone it down some?" He motioned her to sit down at the last empty chair on his side of the table and looked around to make sure no one else was paying any attention to them.

Cheyenne quickly sat down, her face beaming with excitement at the realization. "I thought you looked kind of familiar, but I knew you weren't from around here. It wasn't until after you left that it hit me. I mean, you look so much like her." She glanced over at the three locals at the table. "You guys know who she is, right?"

"Yeah, we do," Maggie spoke up. "We've known since last night."

"And you didn't bother to call and tell me?"

"Well, the last thing she needs is some horror-obsessed fan to hound her with questions about the traumatic events her mom went through," Liam pointed out.

"Hey, I respect boundaries, thank you very much."

"Oh, really?"

It took a moment for Cheyenne to understand what Liam was saying, then she looked back over at Fallon with an apologetic expression. "Shit. I didn't realize that I was...I'm just a really big fan of all things horror. I was actually named after a final girl: Alice Hardy from Friday the 13th. It's actually my middle name, but--"

"Cheyenne." Maggie shot her a look that signaled her to stop talking.

"Annnd I'm still doing it." She paused and let out a nervous chuckle. "Sorry."

"It's fine," Fallon quickly said, wanting the conversation to be over.

As if the universe heard her silent plea, the waitress came back around with everyone's food, the smell of Italian cuisine almost making their mouths water. The group didn't say much while eating, especially Fallon, who was too preoccupied with the pasta bowl in front of her. But she knew Cheyenne was making more glances from across the table while working on the slice of bread that came from Liam's entrée, just itching to talk more about her mom and the history of the murders.

"Oh, fuck," Liam said all of a sudden, breaking the silence.

"What is it, babe?" Maggie asked.

"Wes and his friends are here."

The door at the entrance opened up again, where a group of teenagers walked in. There was a pair of light-skinned fraternal twins at the front, with the boy linking arms with a pink-haired girl next to him. Behind the three were two more teens: a boy with light blond hair and a girl with fair skin and long black hair, which was when Liam let out a sigh of annoyance.

"Of all the places in Woodsboro, they picked here," he stated.

"You don't like them?" Jamie inquired.

"I like my little brother's friends just fine," he clarified. "Except one, and she's with them."

The girl with black hair wasted no time making her way over to the table, her grin wide as she stared down the Hicks boy. "Hi, Liam."

"Hi, Amber," he replied.

"Missed you at your house for movie night last week."

"I had to work late."

"Since when do you work late?"

"Why do you care?"

Amber shrugged her shoulders. "Just curious. It would've been nice to see you."

"I bet," Spencer mumbled.

"Is there something you need, Amber?" Maggie interjected.

"I just wanted to say hi. No need to get all jealous, Margaret."

"Yeah, well, if you can't tell, we're in the middle of eating dinner with friends our age."

Amber did her best to hold the smirk across her lips, as if she was trying not to get irritated by Maggie intervening. "I should get back to it with my friends, then. Enjoy the rest of your dinner." She gave Liam one last glance. "See you around, Liam." With that, she spun on her heel and headed back over to her group of friends.

"Wes needs to pick better friends," Liam said once she was out of earshot, looking over at the blond boy, who gave Liam an ashamed look and mouthed sorry to him before walking to a table on the other side of the restaurant. "Preferably ones that aren't psychos."

So they continued with their meals, jumping back into their discussion from before. However, Fallon kept to herself while she went back to focusing on the pasta in front of her, though it didn't stop Jamie or Spencer giving her concerning glances, which Fallon noticed out of the corner of her eye.

Half an hour later, everyone's stomachs were full from dinner and decided to call it a night. They all headed up front to pay for their meals, but as Fallon and Jamie went to grab their wallets, they were stopped by Spencer.

"It's on me," he told them.

"You don't have to--" Fallon started to say.

"Thanks, Spencer," Jamie cut her off, eyeing her best friend as a way for her to accept the offer and leave it at that.

So Fallon merely gave him a small smile at the gesture and watched him hand the cashier money. While exiting the restaurant, everyone bid each other good night, with Liam and Maggie heading to his truck, Cheynne going in the opposite direction back toward the library, and Spencer, Fallon, and Jamie back to his jeep.

No one said anything during the drive back to the Becker house, which gave Spencer the sign to turn on the radio, his fingers tapping on the steering wheel to whatever song was playing. But Fallon tuned out the music and kept her eyes on downtown, which eventually turned into neighborhoods, then rows of trees as they rode down the long road.

"Thanks for everything today, Spencer," Jamie said, opening the door and shooting the boy a grateful smile.

"No problem," he replied, waving at her.

Once Jamie hopped out of the jeep and shut the door behind her, Fallon did the same thing, but didn't get far down the driveway as she heard the window roll down, causing her to turn around to face Spencer again.

"Sorry about Cheyenne," he told her. "She can be a bit eccentric sometimes."

"It's fine," Fallon said with assurance, folding her arms. "I'm sure you now have a lot of questions about it, too."

Spencer shrugged his shoulders. "I'll admit, I was a little curious about why you were writing this article and why you wanted to interview Dewey, but it all makes sense now that I know Sidney Prescott is your mom." He paused for a moment, face softening the longer he looked at her. "I think she should be proud of you for writing the article and letting her legacy live on."

Fallon dipped her head down for a moment, feeling her eyes watering and blinking furiously before any tears could fall. I wish, she thought.

"But I'll be honest, I didn't realize I was chauffeuring a celebrity around town," he added in a playful tone, changing the mood between them altogether.

Fallon scoffed, a slight grin coming across her face. "I think 'nepo baby' is actually the term you're thinking of, which isn't any better."

"Hey, there are some pretty successful nepo babies out there," he pointed out. "Some of them are attractive, too."

She raised her eyebrows in surprise. "Are you saying that I'm attractive?"

"I didn't say that."

"But you implied it."

"And what if I did?"

Fallon opened her mouth to respond to his question, but all that came out was a laugh instead. "You're something else, you know that?"

"I could say the same about you," he remarked.

She bit her lip and started walking away from the window. "Thank you for driving us around today. And for dinner."

He smiled back at her. "You're welcome. Have a good rest of your night, Fallon."

"You, too, Spencer." She started heading up to the house, her back now facing him.

"Wait!" Fallon turned back around at the boy, who had his arms up. "No tip?"

She rolled her eyes in a bubbly manner, waving at him while opening the front door. The girl watched as he rolled up the window and drove down the driveway and back onto the main road, speeding off into the night. She was about to head inside when the sound of the leaves rustling caught her attention, startling her. Observing her surroundings, she carefully looked around the yard, only there was nothing, and the same nervous feeling from before rose inside her stomach. It was the second time this happened tonight. Maybe it wasn't anything at all and Fallon was just being paranoid for no reason. Except this was the second time it happened tonight, so it had to mean something. Was the universe trying to tell her that coming here was a mistake or that writing this article was a bad idea all along? Or was it an omen for something bigger to come?

"Fallon?"

The brunette jumped at the sound of her name, spinning around to see Jamie standing behind her. "Hey," she breathed out.

"Everything okay? You've been out here for a while."

She nodded her head. "Yeah, I was just talking to Spencer."

Jamie raised her eyebrows and let a grin form on her lips. "Oh, you were, huh?"

"Don't even start."

Jamie didn't say anything else, holding her smile as Fallon stepped inside the house and closed the door, making sure all of the locks were in place.
