Flashbacks and A New Mission
It didn't take long before the 4 of them reached the tall stoned brick castle. Just looking at the building sent shivers down the spines of the older three. Without saying anything the three teens slowly glanced over at each other seeming to be having their own silent conversation.
They didn't have to say it out loud; they knew something big was about to go down as soon as they stepped foot in that tall messy building. It was rare that all 4 of them would ever be called in at the same time.
Not to mention the fact that Maleficent seemed very adamant about the fact that they were going to Auradon. Their Isle ruler absolutely despised Auradon and all of its citizens. The only thing she ever talked about was escaping from their prison and making them all suffer at her expense.
The way she would laugh with her sinister evil laugh and watch as they all bowed down to her begging for mercy that was never going to come. Evie shuddered at the thought. She didn't exactly like Auradon either for what they had done.
Shoving a bunch of villains onto an Island and providing them with nothing, not even real food was honestly evil in itself. Sending them all away and throwing away the key not even caring to check up on them. There was no way that Auradon didn't know what they were doing. They were very much aware and not doing a single thing to stop it.
A trash filled, germ infested, waste land filled to the brim with villains lurking around every corner ready to pounce on the next innocent, doe eyed, unsuspecting child. It was always the children that suffered, rarely the adults.
Oh how many sleepless nights Evie would have her eyes locked on the small purple haired child sleeping next to her refusing to take her eyes off of her. The only few times she wouldn't would be when she was too weak or sick herself and just couldn't keep herself up. Mal usually slept in Evie's bed with her though which did help too.
The small girl claimed it was because she wanted to be there to protect her but Evie knew the real reason Mal wanted to stay in her bed. Mal didn't want to sleep alone because she was scared even if she would never admit that out loud.
Evie didn't blame her though she would be lying if she said she didn't also get scared being alone and she was a teenager. Evie also just felt better knowing Mal was right by her side.
The way she would just lay there almost every night listening for the sounds of Mal's tiny chest rising and falling making sure it didn't suddenly stop within the night. Evie could still remember that dreadful night that it did. That night would forever haunt her.
"Evie! Evie! Evie!" Mal cried out weakly from the bed. Desperate to get the older girl's attention. She needed Evie right now. Her small body felt like it was on fire and everything around her felt like it was spinning. She didn't like it. She wanted Evie. She needed Evie.
Before Mal could cry out again Evie was already by her side kneeling down to be at her level. Her face full of concern. "Mal I'm here. What's wrong?" Evie asked her in her gentle voice trying her best to figure out what was causing Mal to cry out like she had been.
Instead of answering her though Mal just reached up with her small arms. The tears immediately made their way down her pale face. Mal not even trying to conceal them.
Evie could feel her heart immediately drop at the sight. Something was wrong, something was very wrong right now. Mal never acted this way. She was sobbing and not holding back either. Mal always tried her best to hold back her tears.
Despite just being a little girl Mal had it drilled in her small head that crying was vulnerability and she was to never show vulnerability or weakness.
"Evie," Mal sobbed out again, her small arms still reaching up towards the blue haired girl. "Okay here we go. I got you it's okay," Evie whispered gently to Mal as she carefully picked her up bringing her close to her before sitting back on the bed with Mal's small form now curled up on her.
"She's burning up again," Evie whispered urgently to the two boys, not wanting to startle Mal. The back of her hand now pressed gently to the small girl's pale and sweaty forehead. Mal barely stirred, too weak to really move or protest.
"Should we try giving her some of that medicine stuff I stole?" Jay asked Evie carefully making his way over to the bed where Evie was sitting with Mal still cuddled up against her. Her tiny arms wrapped around Evie's left arm as if she was hugging onto her stuffed dragon. Another sign that something was very wrong.
Mal, even though she was only a little girl, didn't like affection very much. Her mother had been pushing it in her small head that affection was weak and if she ever saw her being weak like that she would be sorry. Any time Evie would try to hug Mal or hold her close she would whine and push Evie away the best she could with all her tiny might.
That is unless Mal was sick, injured, or asleep but even when Mal was sick or injured she would still let out a small protest normally. Today was different though it was Mal that had cried and begged for Evie to hold her.
She didn't even try to make any excuses either. She had just started crying out of nowhere begging for Evie over and over again until Evie held her like she is now. This had immediately set off alarm bells in Evie's head and she knew right away something wasn't right.
"I don't know, I guess we can try," Evie told Jay, trying her best to mask the fear she was feeling right now. Her heart felt like it was about to beat out her chest. "Here I got it. Try this," Carlos responded to Evie carefully bringing over the bottle of expired medicine.
It was all they really had. There was no doctor on the Isle to help them and all the medicine they had was left overs from Auradon which was normally expired.
Evie slowly nodded trying to control her own breathing as she carefully filled up the dropper with the correct dosage. To Evie's surprise Mal didn't even put up a fight like she normally would every time one of them would try to give her some of the expired medicine.
Mal always hated taking medication and usually trying to get the small girl to take any form of medicine always resulted in stained clothing and a few bites and bruises. Usually Jay would have to hold her while Evie forced the dropper in her mouth. It wasn't the best solution but it was better than nothing.
The fact that Mal put up no fight right now was another huge blaring red flag. "How long before we know if it works?" Jay asked the two other teens. His voice clearly strained but he was trying to hide it. Jay couldn't let them know he was worried. Jay was always the one to keep his cool the most out of the group. If Jay was worried things were extremely bad.
"I'm not..." Evie began but didn't get to finish when Mal's ghostly pale face seemed to grow paler and before any of them could process what was happening Mal started crying out again.
Her oversized clothes that usually swallowed her now covered in her throw up. "I'm sowy," Mal sobbed. Her small body now shaking even more as she just kept repeating those words over and over again not wanting to get punished for her weakness.
The small girl could still remember the beating from her mother she had gotten the last time she was sick like that. The red scared marks still burning through her skin as a reminder.
Evie felt her heart break at the sight. Mal's small vulnerable form still shaking and trembling against her. Evie closed her eyes wrapping her arms protectively around Mal pulling Mal closer to her; she didn't even care that she was probably going to ruin her outfit. Mal was more important right now. "You're gonna be okay M. I promise," she tells her, not even knowing if she believes it herself.
Mal didn't deserve this life. She should be in a safe warm bed with a mother that actually loved and cared for her. She should have good medicine that can actually heal her, not the last bit of some expired bottle. She shouldn't have to break down in hysterics like this because she got sick.
It wasn't fair. "I'm sowy! I'm sowy!" Mal continues to cry out. Evie feels her chest tighten the more Mal's squeaky weak little voice continues to wail out those words.
It takes all she has to hold herself back. Evie wants to scream and she wants to fight. Oh she would give anything to make the people that did this suffer, but she can't. The people that did this were off enjoying their lives and their freedom and so all she can do is hold Mal close to her and hope Mal makes it out of this.
"Hey shh it's okay Mal. It's okay," Evie whispered while gently running her fingers through Mal's purple hair that was now damp with sweat, trying her best to sound calm despite how much she was beginning to really freak out.
Mal's breathing seemed to be getting more and more labored than usual and her heartbeat was racing. Evie could feel it against her own chest.
Her own heart almost stopped though when she heard the words that were uttered from Carlos' mouth. "Um guys, is throw up supposed to be that red?"
*Back in the present*
"Evie!" The words startle her, bringing her back from her flashback. Her eyes quickly scanned around trying to remember where exactly she was. Her mind still reeling.
"Right yeah sorry I'm here."
"You ready?" The boys both ask her. Their eyes still glued to the castle waiting for Evie to say she was ready to go in and face their parents. Mal had already run inside eager to see her mother again. They would have gone in after her but they could tell that Evie was out of it.
The blue haired girl's eyes had been glossed over and she was just staring off. They had tried to call her name multiple times, but she had stayed how she was completely unresponsive. They knew they couldn't leave Evie like that and there was no way she could go in and face their parents that way either.
Evie slowly nodded. She didn't really know if she would ever be ready to face them, but she knew that they had to. The longer she kept them waiting the worse things would be for them. Not to mention Mal had already gone in and they couldn't just leave Mal alone with Maleficent and their parents for that long.
With Evie's nod of approval the three of them slowly made their way into the castle preparing themselves for what was to come. "Took you long enough!" Maleficent spat as soon as the three of them made their way inside.
"Mommy said she has a special mission for us!" Mal squeals out excitedly, her small feet running over to the three of them. She couldn't wait to hear what the special mission was. Maybe if she could complete this mission she wouldn't have to get sent away and she could stay with her mommy.
The three teens quickly glanced at each other again. Those were never good words. Anytime Maleficent had a "mission" to complete it usually meant something dangerous and impossible. Not to mention Mal had just called Maleficent mommy again. Evie closed her eyes expecting to hear the slapping sound, but to her surprise it didn't come.
Whatever this mission was, it was clearly something big enough that Maleficent would allow a "mommy" to slip by. The three of them quickly made their way over to where Mal was standing on her little wooden box she always used to make herself appear taller. They could feel the weight of their own parents' presence.
"What's the mission mommy?" Mal's squeaky voice asks eagerly. Evie closes her eyes and scrunches up once more expecting the sound of the slap again, but to her shock just like the first time it doesn't come. This was big whatever it was. Maleficent had just allowed two "mommys" to slip by.
"Well my little mini me..." Maleficent began causing Mal's little face to light up at the mention of this. Her mommy had just called her mini me. She couldn't believe it. Evie watched the interaction holding back the urge to roll her eyes. Maleficent knew exactly what she was doing right now and Evie didn't like it one bit.
Author's Note: I hope you enjoyed this chapter and please feel free to let me know what you thought. I always enjoy hearing people's feedback and it helps keep me motivated as well. Also please let me know if you would like me to make the flashback part into its own one shot and expand on it more. I have been playing with the idea of it but wasn't sure if it would be something people would be interested in. I also have a one shot book based on this same universe if anyone has any one shots or ideas they would like to see please feel free to let me know as well. 💜💙
