chapter 5

Libby's POV

I find myself in the same forest—the one I'm always in. But tonight, there's something darker, something oppressive hanging in the air, like a presence that had been lying in wait. My skin prickles with unease. Where am I? I barely whisper the words before the silence is broken by soft footsteps behind me. I whip around, sword drawn, heart racing.

"Who's there? Show yourself!" I call out, trying to keep my voice steady.

A figure emerges from the shadows, moving with a chilling grace. "Oh, don't tell me you don't recognize me." Her voice is smooth, taunting, with a tone that sends a shiver down my spine. She steps into the moonlight, and her features become clear—a woman with dark brown hair that cascades down her shoulders and eyes like molten gold, gleaming with a strange intensity. Her lips pull back, revealing fangs, and she's dressed in a blue leather jacket, confident and dangerous.

"No... no, this isn't possible," I stammer, feeling my grip on the sword loosen. "You... you can't be here. I saw you die."

She tilts her head, a smirk playing at her lips. "Oh, poor little Libby," she purrs. "Still clinging to that memory, are we?" She chuckles softly, the sound dripping with amusement. "It's adorable, really. Did you think I'd be gone forever?"

I take a shaky step back, struggling to hold my ground. "Stay back. I don't know what you are, but you're not real. You can't be."

Her golden eyes narrow, the glint of amusement fading as something darker, more intense, flickers across her face. "What's the matter? Afraid of a ghost?" She leans closer, her voice barely a whisper. "You should be."

I grit my teeth, trying to summon the courage to stand my ground. "If you're here to scare me, you'll have to do better than that."

She laughs, her gaze never leaving mine. "Oh, I don't need to scare you, Libby. Fear is already written all over your face." Her voice drops, laced with something sinister. "And trust me... you should be scared. Because I'm here now, closer than I've ever been."

My throat tightens as I struggle to speak. "What... what do you want from me?"

She shrugs, her smirk widening. "Maybe I want nothing. Or maybe I want everything. But let's not spoil the fun by giving you all the answers now." She pauses, her gaze shifting, as if she can see right through me. "Oh, I've waited a long time for this, Libby. And patience, as they say, is a virtue."

I feel my legs give out as I stumble backward, collapsing onto the damp ground. She takes a step closer, her smile stretching wider, eyes gleaming with dark amusement.

"Don't be afraid," she says softly, almost mockingly. "I'm not going to hurt you... yet."

With a gasp, I jolt awake, sitting up in bed, desperately clutching my chest. My skin is damp with sweat, my heart hammering wildly. I press a hand to my forehead, trying to calm myself. "It was just a dream, Libby," I whisper, voice trembling. "Just a dream." I take a deep, steadying breath, lying back down with a shaky sigh. But her face lingers in my mind, vivid and unnervingly real.

My writing schedule is so bad right now
