Episode 86
Since Ain was awake now, I gave T her bed back. As much as I still wanted to be next to him, I didn't want to make T sleep on the floor anymore. She wouldn't let me do that even if I asked. She'd say it was worth it, because we were her brothers. Still, T deserved to sleep in an actual bed again.
It was almost lunchtime when I got up today. I went to Ain and T's room cuz I wanted to see he was doing, and I knew the others would probably want him to eat soon. That'd be a good time for me to eat, too, since I just woke up and all.
I wasn't going to get to their room, though.
I saw Ain trying to walk by leaning on one of the walls. His legs were shaking, and his face was all sweaty. He was breathing hard, too. It wouldn't take that long for other people to figure out that something really bad just happened.
His daddy found him before I did, though. Uncle put one of Ain's arms around his neck. "Honestly, son... Sometimes, you and your mom are too stubborn for your own good."
I followed them into the kitchen. Uncle helped Ain into a chair while Marshall and Recah watched.
"Seriously..." Marshall went to the stove. "I don't get why you wouldn't just use the phone since you have it and all."
Ain smiled. It almost looked like he wasn't just struggling to walk. "I might not have openly said so, but I had one two years ago, too."
"He does have you there, son." Uncle put his hand over his face.
I sat beside my big bro. "Still... You probably shouldn't try to walk if your legs feel like jelly."
Marshall and Recah nodded.
"Anyway." Recah went up to the fridge. "Does anyone have preferences for what to eat? I have no ideas."
I shook my head.
"Me neither," Ain said.
Marshall shrugged. "Want something I can't have, so I'll eat whatever."
Recah sighed and gave Ain soup, so she could make sandwiches for us and Marshall. I had a feeling Uncle was gonna wait to eat until he got back to his house.
Ain seemed to be happy to be eating even though his hands were still shaking a little bit. He must have been hungry.
Anyway, after Ain and Marshall finished eating, Uncle and Marshall helped Ain get back to his room. I was going to follow them when I saw Recah sitting at her black thing.
She was scrunching her face. It looked like she wanted to tear up the paper.
I looked at her. "What's wrong?"
"Oh, it's really not a big deal." She took a breath. "I'm just annoyed because my paper is full of typos."
I tilted my head. "What's a 'typos'?"
"Basically, I spelled a bunch of things wrong."
"Can't you fix that, though?"
She pulled the paper out of the strange black things. "Of course, I can. I'd just rather that I didn't make any typos in the first place."
Huh... I didn't get that, but I didn't really write, so... Plus, I didn't know what those were until now.
"How do you fix the typos?" I asked.
"Well, I could get a new paper and type the words again the right way, but I don't really like to do that, because it's a waste of perfectly good paper." She picked up a little round blue thing. "This is called correction tape and I use it to fix my mistakes."
I tilted my head. "Can you show me how it works?"
"Of course." She smiled at me. "One of the first things I have to fix is that I wrote 'cot' instead of 'cat'."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Is cot even a word?"
Recah furrowed her eyebrows. "I'm pretty sure it is. I think it's a sort of bed."
Huh... I didn't know that was a thing. I'd have to ask Ain about it or see if my phone could tell me about them. Boy did I love that my phone could talk to me.
"Anyway, I roll some of the correction tape over the 'O' and I can type over it no problem."
My eyes got big. "That's so cool!"
Recah laughed. "I thought so, too, when I saw it used for the first time."
"Is that the only reason you didn't look too happy?"
"You're very perceptive." She took a breath. "I don't know what I'm going to write next after I finish fixing my typos."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Well, is there anything you want to write right now?"
"My bank of ideas is totally spent."
"When T gets like that, I think she takes a bath."
Recah put her hand over her mouth. "Oh, does she? I might have to try that."
"And I think if that doesn't work, she goes and picks Leon's brain. She usually has her problem fixed after that."
"I should probably try that." Recah furrowed her eyebrows. "I think my aunt used to do that."
I looked at her. "I could try to help you do that later if you're still stuck andyou tell me what it's about."
"You're a sweetie, honey." Recah winked. "I could read you some of what I wrote soon if you want. It's similar to some of the other stories I know you've listened to."
I threw my arms around her. "You're the best, Recah! That sounds like so much fun!"
She laughed and rubbed my back. "I knew when I started writing it that I wanted you to be the first one to hear it."
That felt nice. I liked when people did that.
I grinned from ear to ear when I went to be with Ain. I was excited for that day to come. There was nothing like hearing a story I never heard before. I was pretty sure Ain felt the same way when he read his own books.
