State of Fear Pt. 2
Seattle.
Bart and Jessica sat at a table in the somewhat fancy restaurant Jessica had recommended. Both had menus in hand and smiles in their faces. Nervous smiles. Though, both were having a good time.
Bart: Seems nice here.
Jessica: Yeah. The menu looks good.
Bart: You look nice, too.
Jessica: Thanks, you think so? I'm beginning to think green is my color.
Bart: How's all that going, by the way?
Jessica: The ring? Okay, I guess. I'm still getting used to it.
Bart: You seem pretty handy with it on the battlefield.
Jessica: Well, my focus is better than Kyle's but he's a lot more creative than I am. Though, really I don't know what I am.
Bart: Hungry?
Jessica laughed.
Jessica: Very.
Just at that moment, the waiter walked by with his pad and pen out and ready.
Waiter: Ready to order, Sir and Madam?
Bart: Ladies first.
Jessica: Oh, okay. Well, can I have the salad to start and than the sea bass, please?
Waiter: Certainly. And for the gentleman?
Bart lifted his menu and his eyes quickly scanned the entire thing.
Bart: Can I get the salad, too please, but with extra chicken, and the bread basket with gnocchi to start? Aaand I'll follow with the pollo linguine, spaghetti carbonara, and the rigatoni alla ragu for the main. With more bread, too. Please?
The waiter and Jessica looked at Bart as he handed the menu back to the waiter.
Bart: I'm on a calorie controlled diet.
The waiter just took his menu and walked away with their orders written down. Bart smiled and turned back to Jessica.
Jessica: Can you really eat all of that?
Bart: More, actually, but I don't want to look too much like a pig. I, uh, don't date much. Actually, this might be the first one I've been on that wasn't a double date with my friend, Garfield.
Jessica: I'm the same way. I've been on date before, but I can't seem to remember them too well.
Bart smiled before he felt something in his head. Like a sharp pain but he wasn't angry. He was, anxious. Everything seemed to be moving at -2x the speed than normal.
Bart: Could we, like, move things along a bit faster? The service here is so damn slow.
Jessica looked at Bart a bit confused.
Jessica: We just ordered. You know you don't have to be fast all the time.
Bart rubbed his hand as he tried to keep his smile up.
Bart: I know but, it feels like I've been in here for days. All the time I'm in here, moving so slow, I could be out there saving people.
Jessica suddenly looked embarrassing. A sharp pain hit her head and she began to feel extremely anxious. Bart was right. He could be saving hundreds of lives, but here he was. With her. People could be dying but here he was. Why did he accept this date for her? She wasn't worth it.
Jessica: Oh. I'm sorry. I knew I shouldn't have asked you out. I should go.
Bart suddenly placed his hand on hers as he kept his smile up.
Bart: Hey, Jess, you okay?.
Jessica began to freak out just by his touch. She couldn't stop herself. The fear was too much.
Jessica: Get off me! Don't touch me!
Suddenly, Jessica's ring began to glow and a green blast completely destroyed the table which sent her to the floor while Bart raced to his feet to avoid the blast. The waiter walked over to Jessica and lifted his hands.
Waiter: Ma'am, you are cauing a scene. Please cal....
Jessica didn't even hear him. The ring activated again and the waiter was suddenly thrown across the room and into another table by another Green blast. Jessica began to freak out as she looked at what she did with tears in her eyes.
Jessica: I didn't mean to...I thought he was going to touch me....
Bart: You ask me, he deserved that. He was looking at you funny. They all are. I mean, you are making a fuss. Can't you just calm down?
Jessica slowly stood up as she looked at Bart. There was hurt in her eyes but Bart didn't seem to notice. To him, this was just some joke. He was trying to get himself to laugh.
Jessica: Why...why would you, say that?
Jessica couldn't take anymore. She ran off and ended up entering the kitchen to escape.
Bart: Hey, where are you going?! Don't let all this slowness ruin our date!
Bart sighed before he looked around the room with a hateful glare.
Bart: Anyone looking down their noses at us tonight might want to remember we've saved your little lives more times than any of you deserve. You're welcome!
Meanwhile, Jessica raced through the kitchen before she found a large metal door. She opened it and entered the cold room before she closed the door and leaned on it. Here. She was safe here. She should just go home. Home is safe. She can't leave here. She can't go outside. That was too much.
Jessica: Safe here. I'm okay. I'm okay.
Bart: Jessica, you in here?
Suddenly, Bart's head phased through the door which made Jessica back up.
Bart: Come on. Let's blow this joint.....
Bart was suddenly hit with a green blast that sent him through the wall of the restaurant and into the streets. He slowly lifted himself up as he wiped a bit of blood from his mouth.
Bart: Hnnnn.

Gotham.
You stared at the monitor in the dark room. Your cape and cowl had since been abandoned somewhere as the stinging pain continued. You see, everyone is afraid of something. How many could you and Bruce save in this war if it wasn't for fear?
Dick had left the family to find his old team and take back the Justice Leauge. Kate was doing god knows what somewhere. Terry and Debra were still stuck in this time. You have made so many people you called friends and family worry about you.
Batman or Y/N, you failed. You're as guilty as the people you fight everyday. So many call you a hero, but you couldn't quite see it. In the end, you were just some scared kid.
Suddenly, there was a sound. A loud one. Before you could turn around the whole way, you were hit across the face by what felt like a crowbar that slammed you into the conputer.
Conner: I've done everything you asked me to! Everything!
He held your throat as he kept you pinned against the computer. His eyes were glowing red as he held up his fist.
Conner: You asked me to go to the Earth's core. You asked me and I did it. Even after almost dying, even after you claimed to be my friend, you still don't trust me. How many more times?!
Y/N: Gak.
You struggled to breath as Conner lifted you up. The stinging pain only grew. You deserved this. You earned this. This hatred. This anger. What came next, you would accept.
Conner: If I die, who will take care of Lois and Jon? If I die, who will save the world? My daughter will never be born and it would be all on you. You've done something no bad guy has ever done. You've pissed me off!
Y/N: Then...do....something...
Conner clenched his fist even harder and let out a cry before he swung. His fist collided with your face which sent you flying across the room and into a display of weapons. You could feel a few of them stab into you while Conner walked towards you.
Conner: Maybe I will.

Detroit.
Artemis flipped over the boy who had tried to tackle her before landing in the field goal.
Artemis: Touchdown! And the crowd goes wild! It's going wild, right?
Even though she was wearing all the football equipment, Artemis still moved a gracefully as she could. That meant no one could even hope to touch her. Artemis threw her hands in the air with a cocky smile as the players all hussled to her.
Artemis: Right! Where was your defense, guys? I got past you like you weren't even there.
Cody: Cheating, dude. We can't flip and shit in all this stuff like you can.
Max: Yeah. Not all of us are trained ninjas.
Josh: I suppose we should be happy that you don't bring Flash to these games. Or Batman.
While Artemis and the others messed around, Kyle sat in the bleachers. He was now out of his lantern uniform and wore his casual clothing. Next to him was a notepad with an unfinished drawing of an unknown figure. While there were parents of the players in the stands, Kyle sat off to the side on his own.
Why did he let Artemis drag him here? He doesn't belong here like she does. He should have gone home. Just be left alone.
Artemis: So we all going to grab a burger and...
She suddenly felt a sharp pain in her head as she looked at the crowd. They were all cheering, but she couldn't even hear them. She froze as she realized they were all looking at her. Everyone was looking at her. She looked back at the team and sure enough, their eyes were on her. They were laughing they were all laughing. No. They were scared. Terrified at the sight of a killer.
Artemis: No...don't...don't look at me...
Cody: Artemis? What are you...
Artemis lifted her arms to shield herself from everyone's view.
Artemis: Don't look at me!
Kyle didn't even seem to notice his friend's distress. He was lost in his own mind. He didn't belong here. He doesn't think he belonged anywhere. Not with his family, not at his school, and not in the Leauge. No one wanted him around.
Artemis' breath grew ragged. She needed to escape. She needed to hide. No one could see her. No one!
Kyle looked at his feet as the crowd began to panic. Maybe he should just dissapear. Vanish. Then no one would even know he existed in the first place.

Gotham.
Conner threw you into another display which earned another cry of pain. You pushed yourself up and dodge his attack before you threw a batarang at him. He caught it without much effort and was suddenly in front of you again. He grabbed you by your neck and lifted you up off the ground.
Y/N: Do it. What are you waiting for, Conner? DO IT!
Conner glared at you as he clenched his fist.
Conner: DAMN YOU!
He swung and you closed your eyes. Instead, the sound of broken glass filled your ears as he punched the monitor. He slowly let go of you and dropped to his knees.
Conner: Damn you.
You rubbed your neck as you slowly sat down as well. You and Conner sat there for a moment in silence. It was a good thing Cassandra and Hel went to visit Alfred tonight. You wouldn't want them to get involved in this.
Suddenly, another figure entered the room. Cassie looked around at the destruction before her eyes landed on the two of you. She walked over and sighed.
Y/N: Not exactly the world's finest team, are we?

Seattle.
Jessica laid on the restaurant floor, a green shield around her to protect her from all of the dangers in the world.
The world was too big. Too big for her. Run from it. Hide from it. Hide away.
Yeah. She needed to hide away.
Protect herself.
Protect herself.
She was afraid this would happen if she went into the world.
Yes, she was. But she overcame it. Became a Green Lantern.
Was she? What use is a Green Lantern whose fear prevents her from reaching her full potential?
She wasn't even a good Lantern. She should fly away.
Stay here. Stay afraid. It was the feeling she knew best. It's who she really was.
It's safe here. She's safe here. It keeps the world small. Away from others, boxed away. Alone.
For him, the world is too slow. He hides behind his laughter because he knows he'll be forced to watch the world crumble slowly. But that's not all. He hides a secret from all of you. One from his time.
Bart raced around and fixed the broken wall before he ran through the restaurant. Everything moves slowly. Not him. Everything he does is fast. Eat, sleep, work, thinking. All of it. Now this was all running away from him.
It was supposed to be a date for him and Jessica. Probably for all of these folks to. He went too fast and blew it. For all everyone. He scared her. He really believed he was an idiot.
He began to take people's wallets from the pockets and quickly read everything he could before sliding it back in. He could find out everything about these people before they even blink. Take their wallets out, find their addresses, go to their homes, look through their lives. All between the passes of their heartbeats.
He had his grandfather's speed. That meant he could change the world. Really change it. But that also meant he could never live in it. Every breath people take was a lifetime for him. Alone. So he tried to slow down. Join the others. Ignore his true potential and say it was for the right reason.
Not anymore.
Not anymore.
But then there's her. Jessica Cruz. Bart thinks he likes her. A lot. They had worked together a lot. She was kind, caring, and amazing in every sense of the word. However, he knows that he couldn't keep a relationship.
He is a fend.
He is a fend. That was what he was always led to believe. Even though Barry knew his true past and assured him that he was innocent, Bart never allowed himself to move on last that lingering feeling of self hatred. He needed to do everything he could while he could. Before they showed up.
He was all alone in the future. Now he is all alone in the past.
In a world where he was one of the fastest beings alive. In a world where he didn't belong. Now he could hear these voices...no. He could feel these voices. He raced around Jessica's bubble before he lowered himself down. He phased through the green light and whispered into her ear.
Bart: Can you hear it to, Jess?
Jessica's eyes shot open and she screamed before she blasted him away again. This time, Bart caught himself.
Jessica: Stay back! I'm going to be...sick!
Jessica hunched over and began to gag. Something was happening to her. Something was trying to get out of her. Suddenly, a black mess began to fall from her mouth. Fear itself began to leave her body and take form. Bart's eyes grew wide as he watched in horror.
