Helena's Childhood

Hel: Dad?!

Y/N: Hm?

Hel: Where do you guys keep the food?

You lifted your head from the newspaper and looked over to Cassandra who was just as clueless.

Y/N: Uh, we just kinda, eat out. I can see if I can make a sandwich or....

Hel: Do you guys only eat sandwiches?

Y/N:.....

Cassandra:......

Hel: Oh my god.

Y/N: We're always busy.

Hel: You don't eat?

Cassandra: When we need to.

Hel sighed and sat at the table with you and Cassandra.

Hel: In my time, you guys have your crap together.

Y/N: And in my time, you don't exist. What's your point?

Hel laid her head on the table and looked at you. Eventually you sighed and set your paper down.

Y/N: What?

Hel: Nothing. I'm just not use to seeing you so young. I mean, you don't have any grey hairs.

Y/N: Good to know.

Hel: And your voice is more raspy.

Cassandra raised a brow and smiled.

Cassandra: Can you tell us more?

Hel perked up with a bright smile.

Hel: Of course! What do you want to hear?

You set the paper down and shrugged.

Y/N: How about you just start at the beginning? Like, your childhood and all that.

Hel nodded.

Hel: Alright.
------------
I was born in the year 2046. Of course I don't remember much since I was a baby, but I do know my first memory. Honestly, I'm glad it's the first thing I remember.

It was you and mom. She was making breakfast when you came in and kissed her. You both looked so happy. You guys always look happy with each other. You're always so caring with her and even as a kid I knew that mom had you wrapped around her finger.

Alfred would take care of me when you guys were out doing something like Justice Leauge business and stuff like that. Either way, it wasn't a secret that you were my favorite parent. I love mom! But I was always with you.

Alfred always likes telling me a story from when I was 5. I was wearing my dragon costume that Aunt Cassie got me. You just got back from patrol and you were relaxing in your chair when I came marching in with the jar of cookies. I held one up to you but you just smiled.

Y/N: Sorry, Hel, but I'm not hungry.

Hel: Papa....papa...eat.

Y/N: Um...I feel hungry all the sudden.

You sat me on your lap and I fed you cookies until you really couldn't eat anymore. Mom found us passed out in the chair covered in crumbs.

You used to always play with me with your costume to. You would be all "I'm Batman" and I would be like "No, you're Papa". Then there was that time where you left me with Aunt Stephanie and Barbara.

Uncle Tim, Jason, and Dick just watched from the other room as they made me dress all girly in dresses and bows. I hated it. I wanted to dress like mom.

Stephanie: I always wanted a little sister so I could dress her!

Barbara: These outfits are adorable. Aw, you look so cute!

Jason: That's just inhuman.

Tim: So humiliating.

Dick: We should go out and help her.

The three just pulled out their phones and started taking pictures of me! They were treating me like a doll! Then you came home and found me in a blue dress. You picked me up and looked at me.

Y/N: Who did this to you?

I just pointed at the room and you entered. Needless to say, they never did it again. Of course, I can't not mention the time you found me in your room with the cowl on. You and Mom looked at each other before you kneeled down.

Y/N: Hel?

Hel: No! I'm Batman!

Cassandra: Who gave you this?

Hel: I found it! I'm Batman!

You smiled and picked me up.

Y/N: Alright, I've got you Batbaby.

You then sat down and placed me on your lap. I still remember what you said that day.

Y/N: I hope you don't have to wear this costume when you grow up. Well, I guess you wouldn't get it right now. Do you want to be Batman, or do you want to be papa?

Hel: Papa!

Y/N: Instead of being Batman or Papa, you should be someone else. Think about your aunts and uncles. They're all different people. One day, you'll find your own path. I can't wait to see where it takes it you.

And I always remembered that. Eventually, after begging you for months, we started my training as Robin. When I was 14, we went on our first patrol. I still remember that night. I had to wake you up from your nap. You had some meeting or whatever.

Hel: You up? Wake up. Come on, let's go, patrol time. The streets are waiting!

You just sat up from bed and pointed at the door.

Y/N: Cave.

I was so happy, I don't think my feet touched the ground. After you got up and suited up, me and you headed to the Batmobile. Mom was at the computer investigating her own thing. You just walked over to her and gave her a kiss.

Cassandra: Happy hunting. Remember the key words, Hel!

Hel: Property damage!

I hopped in the passenger seat while you started up the car.

Hel: You know, one day I'm gonna be doing this on my own.

Y/N: Not today. Haven't you heard? We're the Dynamic Duo.

I, kinda wished I wasn't so eager to go on my first solo patrol. It was something so easy. I've done it hundreds of times! A simple pimp pulp. Uh, that's what I call breaking up prostitution rings. Anyway, it was so simple.

But I messed up.

They stuck me with something. I couldn't think straight and none of my anti toxins worked. I was, so scared. They got me and....if you didn't show up....I don't even want to think about what would have happened.

I've never seen you fight like you did that night. There was no mercy what so ever. The way you beat them.....I never saw so much anger. In the end, you held me and cried. You cried. I've never seen you even have tears in your eyes.

Y/N: It's ok. It's ok. I'm here now. It's ok.

I'm still not sure who you were trying to convince. You didn't let me go on patrol for a while after that. Finally, I had enough.

Hel: I messed up! I'm sorry!

Y/N: The answer is no. I shouldn't have let you go on your own. You're not ready.

Hel: Not ready for the big stuff. I agree. But I can still stop some robbers or something! Like, maybe I can go and....

Y/N: The only way you're going on patrol is if you're with me or your mother. End of discussion.

Hel: You can't be serious!

Y/N: I am. This discussion is over.

Hel: But....

Y/N: I said it's over!

That was the first time to ever yelled at me. I ended up not going in patrol with you that night. I, ran away. I ended up at Aunt Helena's house and she was the one who gave me the Huntress uniform. I went out and fought crime. I wanted to be strong like you and mom.

When you found out, I thought you would be mad. Instead, you hugged me. You and Mom both told me how proud you were that I had found my path.

Cassandra: If you ever need help, call me or your father.

Hel: Obviously.

Y/N: If you can't get to us for whatever reason, whistle. Someone will hear you.

I never understood what you meant by that until I did it. I actually laughed out loud when Lois showed up looking worried. She said that Conner said that you and him would do that if there was an emergency. We've been doing it ever since.

Though, I guess I should tell you something else. In the future, I didn't tell you guys until I was 16. Actually, it was earlier this year. Or, my year. Um....it was on my 16th birthday. Since I was now 16, you had decided it was time for me to finally drive the batmobile.

Hel: Whoooooo!

Y/N: Now drift.

And I did. We did donuts in that empty parking lot for hours. You and Mom cheered me on like my own personal cheerleaders. As the night calmed down, the three of us sat on the roof of the manor where I made a choice to tell you something. I was scared. Terrified. I also knew I couldn't hide it forever. So, I just said it.

Hel: I'm gay.
----------
You and Cassandra looked at each other as Hel looked down at her hands in her lap. That was, out of the blue.

Y/N: You're, gay?

Hel just nodded.

Y/N: O-Ok. I mean, cool.

Hel smiled.

Hel: That's exactly what you said.
---------
Hel: You're not, like, dissapointed or something?

Y/N: Why would we be? It's not like you can choose to be straight or gay. You like chicks. So do I.

Mom smacked your arm but you just laughed. Just like that, all the tension and fear was gone.

Hel: So you guys accept me?

Cassandra: We always will. You are our baby. Always.

Y/N: Absolutely. I'm actually glad I wouldn't have to break any poor boy's arm now. That now falls onto my lovely wife.

Mom smacked your arm again but she agreed. You hugged me. You held me as I cried tears of joy. You never tried to have me hide that. You told me to embrace it. Like I said, you and mom were my personal cheerleaders.
---------
Hel: So, yeah. That about covers it.

You and Cassandra sat in silence for a moment. As weird as it sounds, you felt like you wanted to cry. You never thought about having kids but it sure seems like you raised a damn good one.

Y/N: That's...wow. I don't even know what to say.

Cassandra: Were you happy?

Hel: Absolutely! You guys are the greatest parents I could've asked for. Though, there were times I wished you were a bit less strict. You hardly let me go to parties and you practically made me cover every part of my body. But, I never once hated you guys and you were always supportive. You guys were awesome. Or, are awesome.

You smiled and looked at Cassandra.

Y/N: You hesr that? We're awesome.

Cassandra: Damn right we are.

You both highly fired which made Hel laugh.

Hel: I love you guys. I'm so glad you never change.
