Chapter 24
Inferno woke with a slight ache in her back, she'd fallen asleep laying on her axe handle. She sat up, smoothing her red hair out of her face. Tetra was still asleep, her head resting against a rock. Tsunami and Hurricane were sitting by the fire, Hurricane was wrapping cloth gently around Tsunami's wrists. Inferno could hear them talking quietly, and saw Tsunami gently stroke Hurricane's cheek with her left hand. Ugh. Inferno had never felt particularly close to anyone, except maybe her best friend Stone. She was jealous of the friendship that Tetra and Tsunami had, though she was grateful that Tetra had taken it upon herself to become Inferno's friend as well.
"We should be moving soon. I want to put as much distance between us and Anemone as possible before nightfall," Inferno said, as she began rubbing sand along her axe blade to clean it.
"Tsunami needs rest, we'll be fine for at least anther day here," Hurricane insisted.
But Tsunami cut him off, "No. I'm fine, and Inferno's right. We need to get as far away from Anemone as we can." The look on her face left no room for anyone to protest.
Tsunami sorted all their possessions into the four bags, and passed them out. Shouldering her longbow, she swam out of the cave. Inferno sped up, swimming right next to Tsunami. "What's our plan? Your swimming like you've got a purpose."
Tsunami kept swimming, but she turned her head to look at Inferno. "I need to get as far from Anemone as possible."
"Why are you so afraid of her? We've given her what she wants."
"No. We didn't. Tetra gave her the location of the temple, but I've still got the pearl."
"You've got the pearl?!?"
Tsunami gave Inferno a sly smile and then picked up her pace. Orca mer are incredibly fast swimmers, and Inferno couldn't keep up with her. But her mind was spinning, how was it possible for Tsunami to still have the pearl?
